  • It’s a good source of iron and is probably one of the richest vegetable sources, but not as incredible as we once thought.
It is still slightly better than broccoli or Brussels sprouts, but there are even better plant based sources!
There was actually a decimal place error when recoding the iron content of spinach in the 1930’s which meant that it looked like spinach contained 26mg of iron/ 100g instead of 2.6.
Some of the best plant based sources of iron include cacao powder, tofu, cashew nuts, sesame seeds, cooked beans, lentils, pumpkin seeds and 100g. The good news is that spinach contains vitamin C which facilitates absorption of the iron.
Good animal sources include liver, venison, red meat, sardines, and egg yolks. However, the amounts are not dissimilar to plant sources in many cases. But….
The haem-iron found in animal foods (Fe2+) is easier for the body to absorb than non-harm iron (Fe3+). It doesn’t mean that we cannot get enough from plants, but we may need proportionally more for the same absorption. There are also plant compound that can also reduce our absorption of iron in food.
I see so many women in clinic with iron deficiency, and it can be a problem to meet daily demands, especially in our fertile years, where when we are menstruating or during the perimenopause and periods can become heavier.
I have a completely free fact sheet on my link in bio or website all about iron. It tells you everything you need to know about deficiency, where it’s found and what it does in the body. Feel free to download it as it’s really informative.
