It's normal he's still upset and depressed. That's part of the grief, grief is a cycle and an essential process for personal growth. I'm pretty sure your son will eventually overcome it. It's just a matter of time.

I'm so sorry to hear that! Just to encourage both of you, my husband became a quadriplegic in his middle 20's, due to a car accident. He is now 48 years old. He learned how to drive a special equipped van, and went to college and has several degrees. One of them is a Master's in Counseling. We married 9 years ago, and although it's been a rough road for the both of us, we have a lot of happy times, and a lot of laughs. Its a mindset, once you accept it, you can change your thought process and choose how you will navigate through life. Some of his family told him that he should just go into a nursing home, he will never get a girlfriend, never have a job and never own his own home. He now counsels individuals with disabilities, and is very successful. He of course equates all of his successes to finding Christ in 2005. He now has a great job with the state, is married, drives, and we just bought a beautiful home! Its never going to be easy, but your attitude and frame of mind makes all the difference. Its not about what you CAN'T do but about what you CAN do after an injury that could have killed you, but didn't. Your son is a SURVIVOR!! I will say a prayer for him and that he would be successful in all he sets his mind to, and that because of that, he will reap a ton of blessings. Stay strong Mama!.

I don't have a SCI, but I am a peds ICU nurse, and I have looked after a couple young gentlemen who became quad from accidental injuries. Once the acuity of their care came down and the severity of their injuries became more apparent, this has always been one of the first questions they asked me. I was only able to give them answers of "to the best of my knowledge" and "according to research" as sex and erections aren't commonly talked about or taking place in the ICU setting. This video is so helpful for me and will provide me with a tangible experience to share with them, if I should have any patients who may face these same difficulties in the future. Thank you for sharing!

I’m A 60yo quadriplegic ( incomplete C3-5). Injured a year ago. You are very mature Zack. Great coverage on this uncomfortable topic. To add to this topic I have to say an orgasm forces my body into violent spasms, almost seizures. Vibrators like the wand are very helpful. Still worth it, just something to be aware of. Thanks for being so open on the subject!

My husband has been a quadriplegic for 23 years and we have been married for 9. His injury looks exactly like yours, the way your hands, arms and legs move/don't move. Whenever we meet new people, they later tell us that that is exactly what they are thinking, but never wanted to ask. My husband has 100% feeling in that region. He's one of the lucky ones.
***please pin this comment. I am also pasting to this comment something that I commented on down below. I hope that what I have to say also encourages others in their walk through their new injury.

it shouldn't be awkward. its a natural normal human function. something most everyone has and as adults understand we have sexual organs just like lungs, heart, liver, kidneys etc. we can all have issues with our organs, including sexual organs. thank you so much for the educational video and informing many. of course, like u said, everyone is different, everyone has different levels of injuries. but this is a wonderful conversation to have to normalize the subject. its absolutely NOTHING to be embarrassed about! and you did this in a very professional manner and covered the subject very well!

You're definitely a better person than I in this area. I generally tell people that unless you are having it with me, how I have sex is nobodies beeswax.
I was born paralyzed pretty much from waist down due to Spina Bifida. I have some feeling in my knees and random spots, but it changes from day to day. In regards to autonomic dysreflexia, it is without a doubt the worst feeling in the world for me. I suffer from chronic migraines, and I would take 1 any day over the pain of AD. I have been hospitalized numerous times with cellulitis in my lower legs, and the first symptom is always headache with dizziness/nausea. A doctor in the ER told me that it happens anytime we (spinal cord injury sufferers) have an injury below our level of sensation. Others tell me if they are late cathing they experience it. I'm glad you are so open with your life and have such a positive attitude.

I’m a quadriplegic too. And sexual stim gives me the worst autonomic Dysreflexia. Going to the bathroom is impossible For me without assistance from suppositories or an enema. I pretty much suffer with the autonomic dysreflexia all day and since I can’t feel what’s wrong I have to use a process of elimination. Until I get it right. The fact that you can be sexually stimulated and feel pleasure is a blessing from the gods

Hi Zack. I want to thank you for being so willing and brave to come out and make this video. Of course people that do not have the issues you do are wondering about this. And I think for the people that do have the issues like you do it was very informative and very helpful. So either way I think this video was a great video you explain things in a very mature fashion and show the different equipment that might help. so I just want to say keep it up. most people never bridge this topic because they're too afraid. And like you said it's the number one thing most people are actually thinking about. Good luck to you and stay well.

I’ve been following you for awhile and taken a huge interest in you ... you just touched my heart an I’ve pray for your healing.. but I have to be honest, when I first started watching you I was like , omg this poor kid and his family... will he ever have a life again ? “I don’t feel that way anymore” you blow my mind with all you do and continue to do.. your an inspiration to others .. also make ppl like myself to get off the petty wagon and do what we’re afraid to do!!!!! I’m so happy for your relationship with your girlfriend.. you will be a great husband & dad one day hon.. so keep on keeping on !! Lol

Hey Zach thank you so much for all these videos. As a C4 quad similar to your age that has only been injured for a year, your experience with the injury has really been beneficial in my progression. I would love to hear about your approach towards dating as I've definitely found it to be a little different since the accident and somewhat confusing. Also, if you're willing to take me under your wing and act as a mentor, I would love to chat or Skype with you one-on-one whenever. Thanks again for everything

Great informative video! Helps remind the non disabled that we are just as human as they are, these natural things don’t magically disappear once you are disabled. Conversations about sex shouldn’t be taboo!
