    Oh my gosh! Let's set aside your progress on the repaint for a moment - which is incredible and watching it alone is mesmerizing. I'm realizing now Marabeth that part of the appeal in your videos specifically is that they are a glimpse, albeit a deep one, into who you are as a person and artist. By sharing your mental and emotional journey you're providing us with the space to experience that part of ourself - the imposter, the judge and jury, etc. Thank you isn't enough - boundless gratitude might be closer. Be well! ♥

      This makes my heart sing ❤️. I’m just thrilled that it translates that way because finding that place where it can all be present-like you said, the imposter, the judge, jury, the accountant 😆-is really the way that I have saved my art career. I spent years trying to banish parts of myself that really were never a threat once I learned to just let them chatter there in the background while I decided what I wanted to do next. I’m just thrilled that it’s helpful to someone else. Thanks for your kind words and for leaving this comment. xoxo

    you are such a gift to us out here - it's the encouragement, the cognitive behavioral tips, the courage you show in being so real - when so many of us (me!) do not have the courage to share our work - even if people around me buy my work and say - "put it out there" - I am so shy I just can't do it. I have my local buyers and that's it. I wish I had your gracious courage - but enjoy your pep talks often - thank you so much MBQ:)

      I would love to see your work, Angie! And how did you get your local buyers? Friends or do you show locally? And honestly, I think many of us are shy and scared to show our work-it feels so awkward and vulnerable. I’ve had many circumstances where I just jump and do it because it’s the only way I know to get past it. It was partly that reason that I started this RUclips channel-I didn’t want to shrink back from sharing my work, whether it was good or bad. I guess I wanted to normalize the fact that we all have good, bad and mediocre work and it’s good to share it all. It also has helped me to be getting older and feel that I just don’t have the time to waste if I want to do something. 😆. Xoxo

      I love it-“this slippery slope we call art”-what a perfect way to describe it, Janice! I found it so baffling for years because I thought it was just the tactile act of doing it, but once I realized that the art actually comes from all of those things going on in the internal space, I realized there was a lot of work to do. 😉. And I do think we all struggle with the same issues. Thanks for watching and for leaving this lovely comment. I so appreciate it.

    Hi Marabeth! I recently discovered you on RUclips because of my own interest in acrylic paints and collage and I’d like to thank you for sharing your beautiful art and the thought process. I find your voice very soothing and your videos - therapeutic. You are very attentive to words and have a rare ability to explain difficult concepts, realizations and feelings in a simple way. I admire your deep philosophical reflections as you go through your creative process that I find very refreshing, exciting, inspiring, and - I already mentioned that - therapeutic. You are so brave by admitting the fears and struggles you’re going through during your creative process and your sincerity has helped me a lot to be brave with my creations as a self-teaching beginner artist😊 Thank you for your beautiful art and mind.

    Thank you for sharing this video. I love the way you work and the paintings you produce. I'm a real novice at painting and have found myself prone to thinking ahead, pushing towards finishing rather than focusing on what is happening at the moment. I've started to learn to focus on slowing down my breathing, like in meditation/mindfulness practice. When I remember to do this it helps me to avoid rushing.

    After a lifetime of meeting deadlines and all that goes along with that, its been a challenge to slow down when approaching any task whether its fun or necessary. I find myself getting anxious part way thru an art project- i want to see it completed, often I get bored if it takes too long so then I hurry and ultimately overwork it with poor outcome. I think I need more self talk (and maybe a glass of wine😂) to get me past those stages.

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  Год назад +1

      Yes, noticing my self-talk and improving that has been a game changer! And I know exactly what you mean-it’s hard to stick with the evolution of a painting. It’s in the unattractive stage for so long that I think a part of my brain panics (sounds dramatic and also feels dramatic! 😆) and that’s when I either get bored or rush through. I have to practice just calming down and sticking with it. It’s such a mental practice that really affects the results. Thanks so much for watching and leaving this lovely comment!

    I love this topic and your thoughtful exploration of this particular voice. For 30 years, I worked in an industry that was based on meeting deadlines… And the consequences of missing one were heavy. Hundreds, often thousands of people depended on me, my manager, and our team of dozens to create corporate training to be delivered to a world-wide audience. In my whole career, I made every deadline… Now that I am “retired“ I am learning to drop the anxiety, tension, and expectation of efficiency, and retrain my body to relax, be inspired, receptive and accept-as you said-how long a piece might take. I liked your thought about not treating myself as an employee, because it’s been 2 years I’ve been free of the combine, as I call it, and though I aspire to sell my art I only want to create joyfully not fearfully. The other thing I wanted to share that your story reminded me of is when I was young and learning to play piano. One of my teachers suggested that I practice a new piece in two different ways: 1) slowly and accurately, so no matter how slowly I needed to go I made sure I was hitting the right notes. 2) Swiftly from beginning to end and don’t worry if I’m hitting all the right notes. Such an interesting combination! I learned a lot that way. Thank you for stimulating so many ideas and bringing up a challenging topic worth exploring.

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  Год назад

      Such great ideas here-I love them! Firstly, I find it fascinating how our experiences (yours in this case working for years under constant urgency and deadlines) can wire our brain and dictate our nervous system response. I am amazed at how art can be such an amazing way to rewire back to our position of openness, acceptance, receptivity, and creative impulse. It doesn’t happen fast (in my experience) but it DOES happen! Art is such a faithful teacher.
      And the second point is such a great one-learning to go slowly and take your time so you can operate at you full potential, but then there is also a place for moving really quickly and not caring about accuracy. I do this quite frequently at the beginning of paintings-If I move quickly, I don’t have time to think and evaluate, which is wonderful because that is something that should only be happening at the end of that creative process (for me, at least). Thanks for the thought provoking convo. I love it.

      @@marabethquinart Thank you! The topic of time and how to interact with it is a big one for me and many friends, especially as we age and transition from one type of life to another. The key change is moving from using time to perform for others compared to pleasing ourselves. So even though right now I’m completing a project for a competition I’m enjoying myself. On the third hand haha the house is a disastrous mess, including invaded by ants. That bite. 😆 Getting everything done is another efficiency-level goal I’m slowly drifting away from but I’d dearly love a clean organized home. Do you struggle with prioritizing when it comes to art over other things or vice versa?

    • @marabethquinart
      @marabethquinart  Год назад

      Oh gosh, I struggle big time with that. I have trouble with prioritizing anyway (ADHD) and so everything can tend to feel as if it should be top priority, leaving me sort of paralyzed. I really have to actively think through and learn to let things go. And there will always be something that doesn’t get done like I wish it would, so there’s a lot of peace-making I have to practice as well. But I love how you described moving from a time of life where you are performing less for others and focusing more on yourself. That’s definitely where I’m at and its no small task, nor any easy one!

    Our society is so focused on cost efficiency, even when it comes to human lives, pharmacy companies can skip developing an important medicine for that reason, we all wired to have that calculator in our brain. Hi Janis! I don’t know if my words will be comforting but I hope they help. I just don’t worry about them folding, wrinkling or creating texture. In fact, I like it because it seems to assist in conveying the feeling I’m going for. But if you do want them to be as wrinkle free as possible, I would gently work over them with your finger after you adhere them to the surface and keep coming back to do it again every few minutes as it is in the drying process. As it begins to dry, the paper can shift or change size a bit and smoothing it out again and again is probably your best chance at getting it to fully adhere. Thanks so much for watching!

      Yes, Maybe so! And for me, I also think art forces me into those places that I’m not quite comfortable with-like sticking with something for awhile when I don’t like it. I think the rushing can be sort of an avoidance tactic, because it tends to calm down when I just decide to enjoy the process instead of focus on the outcome. Anyway, just a theory. 😉 Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
