After watching this video, I took a ‘pause’ from the painting/collage process, gathered up photos of my recent art pieces, and started my own Project Review Notebook. I gave myself the gift of time for some thoughtful reflection and evaluation of each completed piece (using many of your suggested contemplative questions). It was an eye-opening experience. The process helped me shift my automatically self-critical or dismissive view of my art toward a (far more helpful) response of, “How will I use what I learned creating this piece to make me a better artist for the next piece?” Thank you for sharing this excellent artistic-development tool.
I absolutely LOVE this. You are describing exactly the shift I made in my practice and I can’t tell you how it began to shift everything. You are wise 😉
Hi I think you have a great knowledge of science of painting that can help us to learn how to paint and how to develop our art .Thank you for sharing .❤❤
Thank you for this wonderful video, such a wise and thorough approach for expanding learning and increasing the complexity of all the nodes and connections between them. And also just a rich way of approaching art and life. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge.
Thank you for your generosity in sharing what you’ve learned. I agree with so many of the other comments. This may be one of the most important videos & pieces of advice I’ve ever come across! I believe it will help cement things I learn and get me “unstuck.”
this was so helpful as i am wanting to explore and develop my own process. You explained the process in a simple and clear way that was so refreshing with out all the art terms but looking more into our emotional and responsive reaction to our own work. Thank you.
I’m thrilled it was helpful-I never went to art school, so my vocabulary is never predominantly art terms. I connect with it so emotionally that those are the words that come most easily. I’m glad it connects. 😊
Excellent. I enjoyed the Intuitive Landscape Collage class. You shared tips that have become second nature to you, like leaving a bit of unpainted edge on the tissue papers, so they can be lifted.
This is one of the most important videos I have watched this year regarding how to think about your art and how to push yourself to the next level. I just happen to be struggling with that very problem right now and had no idea what to do next. Most art instructors are not teaching these topics. I’ve signed up for your series and am interested in your classes and workshop because I like the way you teach. I am also intrigued by your content. “Do You Rush the Creative Process” video just came up in my feed. Why yes, I do and will be watching that next. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I agree that internal process is talked about far too little considering what a huge player it is in the entire creative process and output. I’m so happy you’ve found it helpful-that makes me very happy. I talk about it from firsthand experience, and I think most of us have very similar obstacles and problems to find our way through. Thanks for watching and for your kind words 🥰

Hello Marabeth- I just wanted to let you know, that I love your artwork and even more so all your matured thoughts and reflections in the proces. That's a huge inspiration to me - art therapy, I call it ;-). So thank you so much for sharing.
Hi Elisabeth, I’m so happy it resonates with you. I love sharing process, both internal and external, so I’m happy that it is sometimes helpful to someone else. Thanks so much for watching and commenting-I really appreciate it!
It wasn’t for so many years because I literally didn’t realize it was about growing and learning LOL. I thought if I had talent, I would just be great at everything, and of course, that made it all not very fun. But it’s sure is fun now 🤩
Thank you for this! I had reached a 'stuck point' where I didn't know what to do next. I now know that what i need to do is 'play' , experiment with materials, colours, tools etc and then examine what i've done. It's also help me 'gel' how I want to use a sketchbook journal. Do you make your own or buy them? Thank you again 👍👍
Hi Anne, I’m so happy to hear it was helpful! And I love that you are discovering the doorway into play and experimentation; contemplation and reflection are magical tools! Thanks for watching and commenting 😊
I need to learn collage fast! I want to make a special project for an artist friend in Spain. I have some beautiful pics of him I’m going to transfer on the Gelli plate (first time using…no pressure🙄) and wand to incorporate sheet music and other stuff. Wish me luck!! ❤️
Haha, you jump in the deep end first! I have tried to do a transfer on the gelli plate but haven’t been successful so far. Have fun with your project! It sounds fabulous.
@@marabethquinart well I’ve made sure the images were printed on a laser jet printer, because that’s supposed to make a difference. I’ll let you know how it goes 😉
This is very interesting that you took a mostly intuitive art and for yourself made it cerebral. This is a type of discipline that works for some people and completely stymies others. I believe in an internal thinking practice in my work, but not quite like yours. Today I will not be making a book of process, but I will keep it in mind if I ever find myself in need of that kind of "process reflection". If this works for you and others, carry on to your best lives. ✌🏾🖌
The only thing that works is what works, right? We all process so differently. What’s interesting is that making those notes about what happened in the painting and reflecting on that doesn’t feel super cerebral to me, even though technically it may be. It feels like just looking more closely at something or from a different angle. We each have our way, which is really so wonderful. 🥰
Thank you for sharing your reflection process. So inspiring as usual. Myself, I don’t know how to reflect on anything I do. I totally agree with you on the fact that things can happen once and never come back because we didn’t learn the process. Like just got the chance to do once and stopped at that point. I’m thinking how can I adapt reflection time to be part of my creative process. How to start?
I know exactly how you feel, but just know that reflection is a learned skill like drawing or working with a certain medium. Learning to sit and contemplate how a painting feels, and then looking for reasons it might feel good or ‘off’ are how you practice. And if you don’t have a sense either way, then just thumb through a book of paintings and notice how some of them draw you in and others not so much. Little exercises like this will allow your ability to reflect to grow-it’s already there, you just need to create some access to it. Hope this helps!

I have been making notes on the back of my small paper pieces,so your video encourages me to take this to a new level…LOVE
So glad to hear it-it’s amazing how much it helps to assimilate the information.

I have three sketch books going and I love what you just shared! I will now devote one of these sketch books to work through the processes……brilliant!
You sound like me-so many sketchbooks and I just love to thumb through them and get ideas. Glad you liked this one!
You're right, artistic growth is intoxicating.

A very informative video. I really like this exercise and I may start a special notebook dedicated only to analyse my paintings❤ thank you
That's a great idea, and it’s so fun to go back through periodically and just remember things that were once a big discovery. Enjoy!

Yes, the laser jet printing is something I’ve never done and I know that’s what is necessary. Now to just find time to get to the printer store… 😆
