One of the best days of my punting life. I hadn't been punting for long and I had spent all week chewing my brain out trying to find the winner for this race. Then, on Derby Day ( it was a Saturday derby ), at around 10:30 am, Derek Thompson interviewed Walter Swinburn on BBC radio about the race and his mount, Lammtarra. The Choirboy gave the usual cliched answers, but I could sense the quiet confidence in his voice. I had my answer. I jumped in the car, drove rapidly to the Tote betting shop in the town centre in Catford, and took the 16/1 still available for the once-raced chestnut. Oh what a happy afternoon! He went on to win the King George and the Arc, and I was with him all the way. I had my biggest ever bet at the time on him in the Arc, and he didn't disappoint. Lammtarra will always hold a special place in my heart.

Great story. We all have stories like this, that is the magic of horse racing. There's nothing else like it.

To this day I still base my bets on trainer, owner and jockey comments. They know!!!

At the 3 furlong post Lamtarra looked like an 'also ran' - 7th at best.
At the 2 furlong post he looked as though he was struggling to hold on to 6th.
At the 1 furlong post he had picked up and looked as though he had left it way too late.
Then as others have said on here 'Whoooosh' he flew past the leaders who weren't slowing up by the way - it was purely Lamtarras speed in the last half furlong that took it.
Magnificent ride by WRS who never gave up on him when he looked easily done for (and going nowhere) 3 furlongs from home.
One of the best Derby finishes of all time surely?

My once in a while look back at the best of racing in UK esp. has elicited a sense of awe at this winning performance which was astutely described by Graham Goode as " from the Gods " in his call ; the colt was no doubt one of best classic winners - bear in mind that he had only one run previously ,and that in his two year old season- but also the manner of the ride given by Walter Swinburne who was in no doubt as to colts ability to produce such a run. Sheer brilliance.

There were many great moments in Walter's riding career, but I think this was the jewel in the crown, a fantastic ride on a great horse who won everything he ran in.

I'm on my seasonal revision of the great races, horses & jockeys from the time Shergar stole my imagination in 81; I have always had a soft spot as it were for Walter Swinburne but the ride he gave this champion to me far surpasses the precocious talent of Frankie when the latter rode the colt in the King George & Arc

The third placed horse, Presenting, finished like like a train. And Lammtarra still flashed past him like he was wading through treacle, which makes you appreciate just how fast he came home.

I had the pleasure of being at Epsom on this day,Lammtarra is still the best horse i've ever seen,a blistering finishing burst which to the naked eye i described as a green bolt flash. Presenting finished powefully & has now become the pre eminant NH sire

Swinburne was told to keep up with the leaders. The horse had only ran once before. He ignored orders and eased him into the race turning the corner. He said it was his proudest ride in the Derby.

Michael John Faulkner The commentator mentioned about Dr. Devious who won it in 1992, not 1993. Lammtarra went on I believe to win the Arc De Triomphe, something that Sea The Stars and Workforce have done in the last ten years.

Got to see Lammtara at Dalham Hall in 2013 after he had been bought back by Sheikh Mohammed from the Japanese. They were about to euthanize him as he had not been successful as a stallion. But Sheikh Mohammed was not allowed to use him as a stallion. Sadly Lammtara passed away the following year.
