I personally believe that Kang and Kodos have no continuity, sometimes siblings, sometimes a couple, sometimes evil monsters out to destroy earth, and sometimes just misunderstood, it doesn’t really matter since they never have had a main starring role in a canon episode.
barney might be a good choice next, because the writers around season 12 ish had that stint where they made him a recovering alcoholic, but newer seasons seemed to have ditched that whole premise
If I remember correctly, one of the DVD commentaries talked about how Kang and Kodos were originally planned to be regularly recurring characters who only interact with Bart and Lisa, but were eventually shifted to be the “Halloween” characters. When one of the newer writers at the time read the original intentions in the show bible, they suggested an episode using them, and the rest of the staff were shocked by the suggestion.

For all we know Kang and Kodos sexual dimorphism works like clownfish. They were born men and then became female over time. Great video, TheRealJims. Kang and Kodas are really interesting characters considering that, for the most part, they are not canon at all, having only mostly appeared in the TOH episodes. (I wonder if they hadn't have appeared in the very first one, if their annual appearance would have become such a tradition). I agree that they couldn't have kept them as the "actually they just want to be nice" characters of their first appearance, and in my head too always had that their initial meeting with the Simpsons tainted their view of mankind for all future appearances (Howeer they did have a few sinister moments in their first appearance despite their "nice" reveal at the outcome, that never actually made this character tweak too severe. I also really like that they have never overused the characters feeling obliged to do a whole story concerning them in each and every TOH special, which would have become trivial and tiresome and seen the idea ran out of steam years ago. One minor thing you could have commented on is how their colour has changed shades a few times over the years (but then yeah, so have all of the characters!); Likewise their actual size has been significantly different at times (yeah, so has Homer's gut!) I initially really liked K&K thought felt they became a bit one joke slightly mis-used characters later on (see also, "Ralph" et al) and their original fun factor lost it's shine a bit. Some people seem to regard 'Citizen Kang' as a classic but I have to say it never grabbed me; maybe due in part to the fact I'm a Brit so wasn't as up to speed with the subject matter it was spoofing enough to really "get" it.
