    • @Valerie-nm1gr
      @Valerie-nm1gr Год назад +27

      It's not so much that Uter is an "old fashioned" stereotype, it's more about the different regions of Germany. The stereotype of Germans as focused, humourless, hyper-efficient, future-forward technocrats is basically the stereotype of the NORTHERN Germans, who live nearer to the famously austere Scandinavian sphere of influence, as well as France, easily the most "snobby" of European nations. Northern Germany is the homeland of Kraftwerk, and all of those car companies. Uter, on the other hand, is from Southern Germany. The southern part of the country is more rural or agrarian, and hence more "laid-back" and more about traditional culture and folk practices. The Alpenhorn is a distinctive feature of traditional Southern German music--it's right there in the name, they come from the Alps, which are the main geographic feature there. Southern Germany is close to Italy and there's some similarity to an Italian stereotype, the people are considered rustic, they're easy to get along with and contented with the mundane pleasures of life such as food, as opposed to chasing productivity, progress, or material success. Having an American kid who wears cowboy boots and a bolo tie isn't wrong, as long as they're portrayed as being from the Western part of the country, where people still enjoy wearing such things. It's a parallel stereotype that we might contrast with the Californian surfer or the spoiled "Boston Brahmin" from New England. Same idea with Uter.

    Üter definitely reminds me of Augustus Gloop. Both are German gluttons. They've done references to Willy Wonka before but just now because of this video I'm surprised we didn't get a Treehouse of Horror segment based on Willy Wonka. Üter as Augustus obviously, Bart as Charlie Bucket, Abe as Grandpa Joe, Sherri or Terri as Veruca Salt, Janey as Violet Beauregarde, Nelson as Mike Teavee (that role is tough to decide on who to give it to) and Mr Burns as Willy Wonka (mainly I gave it to him for being rich and it could be a reference to "Burn's Heir" which is one of my favorite season 5 episodes and top 15 episode for me). It'd be great if done right. As for Üter himself I don't really have a big opinion on him since he's really only prominent in season 6 (literally "Treehouse of Horror V" and "The PTA Disbands" are some of my favorite episodes).

      Gina, the juvenile delinquent from the episode "The Wandering Juvie," reminds me a lot of a young female version of Moe. Both of them are quite harsh and vicious, display antisocial behavior, and have a criminal record. However, they are the way they are because they have no family, and they both definitely have a good side. I have a headcanon that after Gina gets out of juvie, she'll get adopted by Moe and both of their lives will become a lot better.

    So I keep recommending Groundskeeper Willie and Moe, and here's why. It's basically for the same reason but let's start with Moe since it's clearer with him. I want to know if his character was clearly defined and then changed, or if he was always all over the place. There's a period of the show where he has a gruff exterior but is clearly a sweet person inside. Like when he reads Little Women at the hospital. But then there are other episodes where he worships the nightmares your dogs have. Is this one showrunner taking the character in a new direction, or was Moe always just an easy character to use in virtually any scene? Groundskeeper Willie for the same reason. He's been around since season 2 and I love him so much I named my Stardew Valley character after him. He's gruff, no respect for authority, but consistently helpful and a good person at heart. Or is he? In some episodes, he's suggested to be the Aberdeen Strangler. What's up with that? Did he just become so popular, even taking away from characters like Otto as RealJims has said, that he had multiple personalities grafted on, or was he always just a grab bag of adult-in-school personalities?

    I never really thought about it but now that you mention it, Homer and Uter have a lot in common, they could have many adventures together.
    Think about Homer and Uter going on a quest to find the long forgotten perfect piece of chocolate, created by german scientist Ferdinand Leuthäuser-Schacht in 1977.
    Or them trying to lower the legal drinking age to 6, and when they succeed, Homer offers Uter a Duff, but Uter just scoffs it off becaus "Life is too short to drink American beer".
    Or them trying to ban PE in schools. I think there are countless possibilities.

    @12:41 Speaking as someone not from the States, we kind of have those stereotypes in media. In the worst-case scenario, Europeans tend to portray Americans as a stereotype of being loud, obnoxious, fat tourists who like to gab on about how good their country is while Europe (And by extension the world) are strange (That one gag in In Bruges springs to mind). Then there are others where they sound like Texans, carry a load of guns, and have slightly tanned skin.
    On a side note, I don't know where you're getting the "chewing gum" stereotype example from, since that's not usually something we associate with yanks.

    • @TheRealJims
      @TheRealJims  Год назад +4

      For that part, I was thinking of the Augustus Gloop stereotype from Willy Wonka, so I decided to juxtapose the American characters (cowboy hat, chewing gum) for imagining an American equivalent. I feel like the cowboy outfit is kind of a folklore'ish cartoony American outfit that isn't realistic/common for modern American wear. And the bubble gum is like the chocolate in the sense of, "well, what country doesn't chew gum?" Was trying to think of something other than the typical modern American stereotype that would be kind of a wacky non sequitur.
      (As you can see, I went back and forth a lot with writing that comparison in the script, lol)
