“Hey, maybe I should do a video on Mona for Mother's Day to transition into the Season 7 stuff. That would be fun.” **watches all her episodes in a row** “I'm sad now.” :(
I completely forgot Mona's first appearance was in Season 7. It wasn't my favourite episode, so who knows whether it'll make the top 10? Season 7 episodes tended to be either exceptional (A Fish Called Selma), okay (Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming imo) or lackluster (The Day The Violence Died imo), though, so once the exceptional pile is chosen, anything could come up since whether an episode is okay or lackluster depends on your choice.
I'm deeply saddened that Homer never got to really experience a childhood with his mother nor have her in his life unless she's on the run. It really makes me sad that this part of Homer's life was forever changed and he had nothing to do with it.
What? No she doesn't. She always appears with shoulder length brown hair and an expression that suggests she's a junkie. Sometimes the hair is a bit darker but she's always clearly the same character.
I was watching the later seasons the past few days / weeks and they seem to be consistent in regards to her, but defintely before like season 20 ish I'd agree with you.
That episode pissed me off so much. They actually did something genuinely touching and sad... and then they have this totally dumb third act where her ashes stop Mr Burns doing something evil, it's just so idiotic it ruins the whole mood of the episode.
I thought it was a good idea to have her die right after having a fight with Homer. It's heartbreaking, but very poignant and even realistic. Thatb exact scenario happens a lot to people, and it's soul crushing to know your last words to a loved one were said in anger, and you'll never get the chance to make amends with that person.
@@mankytoes I disagree. As this channel often mentions, although it's great to have serious emotional moments, Simpson's is still overall a light hearted comedy show. And it's not like it's completely out of character and random for Mona to turn her death into a scheme to thwart evil. In fact it is very consistent with her hippie activist characterisation.
@@cometmoon4485 I agree it should have light hearted aspects, but it doesn't need to be mind numbingly stupid. They could have developed that kind of storyline in an at least vaguely believable scenario, and not made the episode so jarring. Like gave a really random specific spot she wanted to buried, and it turned out that stopped Mr Burns building his latest destructive enterprise.
For Simpsons Histories I'd love to see one one done for Moe Syzlack, as I would love to see the perspective of going from a mean bartender who doesn't care, to when he was the bartender who listens, to when he eventually became a pseudo uncle to Maggie.

In that camp I was only served a sea food consisting of scallops, shrimp, and 4 kinds of rice. It drove me mad trying to find it here in the states but they just cant get the spices right.
I always like how you put the newer episodes in a more positive, respectable light. I'm one of those "The Simpsons hasn't had a good episode in 20 years" kind of people, but seeing that same sentiment over and over gets tiring. You give really good perspectives to see these episodes by.
The “you’re a disappointment” line could easily be Homer misinterpreting things as thinking it’s directed at him when really it was most probably directed at his father Abe.
Not gonna lye that Homer's orgin of having a rocky family relationship fits perfectly. Alot of people tend to act the way they act because of there own experiences. So Homer being a jerk but also kind hearted at times perfectly shows the kind of people Homer's parents where. A strong no nonsense war vet dad and soft spoken and loving mom. And honestly those modern episodes exploring Homer's past are really bitter sweet especially the Chilly Dog episode.
It's funny how a show meant to be a caricature of the sugary sweet family sitcom could hit so close to home. A LOT of us older millennials and gen Xers had parents like this, and yeah, we're pretty messed up cuz of it.
Great how the later seasons actually touched upon Homer's childhood trauma outside of jokes, and actually used it as an explanation for some of his bad habits. That kind of stuff gives a character depth.
This is one character I feel like they never botched. The first piece of media I ever cried at was the end of "Mother Simpson". The only thing I'd don't like, even as a kid, is when and how they killed her off. You can tell the writers want to continue exploring her character but can now only do it through flashback, dreams or heaven/as a ghost. One of the show brightest stars that kept shining after it died.

As much as I appreciate Mona, I do find her a bit selfish. She cheated on Abe with those two hippies( not honoring her vows) and wanted Homer to use her ashes in another fight the power crusade. Although this and other actions were to better the world for her son and others( even protecting Homer from her being a wanted criminal) Homer never got to fully embrace his mother all his life... say the occasional appearance. This I found tragic and wondered " Mona....if you didn't think your son was dead....when were u EVER going to see your son?"
@@redjirachi1 yeah and the writers rewrote Mona slept with a lifeguard and Homer thought he was his father( bad episode too). It wasn't a necessary thing as it shows a viciousness to her. Abes no prize himself, but he knew when to stop and even tried to remarry for Homers sake.
@Fuckth eChineseGovt I am so glad someone understands where I'm coming from on here! And thank you for stating so much factual information about how she has really let down Homer as a person and a son
@Fuckth eChineseGovt Agreed absolutely. She's a narcissistic sociopath who puts on an innocent friendly face while secretly using and abusing anyone who cares about her. If this was done intentionally it's a pretty genius move by the writers. From her initial selfish motivation for 'activism' (hell even before that cheating on her husband repeatedly) until her death she was a garbage human being. Her sinister nature is never states outright, but merely hinted at for the viewer to put the pieces together, similar to how the victim of a narcissistic sociopath figures that out in real life.
I still remember watching the episode where Mona dies as a kid when it first aired. It was so sad I had to turn the episode off. Mona's death has to be one of the saddest the Simpsons ever did.
Abe is never given enough credit. Dude took care of his kid by himself, giving up everything so he could be happy and in the end he gets treated like trash. Poor man cant catch a break
Yeah, I was just replying to someone else that they should consider doing more sympathetic Grampa episodes like "To Cur With Love." Abe was pretty awful to Homer on several occasions, so there's a reason the show beats up on him. But he did put in the work of raising Homer alone, and did a lot for him. The whole situation is a huge bummer for everyone involved.
Think a lot of the grief that Abe gets probably is deserved. He did some truly horrible things to Homer that really left Homer damaged. Yeah, he did take on the challenge... And Homer is mostly functional... Just take him as a cautionary tale than anything else.
@@LadyLexyStarwatcher Abe was based off a man who returned from war, stuck in his old ways, unable to adapt to what was modern even back then. Also it wasn't Abe's fault Homer stuck a crayon in his nose that caused him to tank his iq or the Simpsons Gene, idk
While Abe did some wery, wery bad choises as a parent, as stated above he also sacrificed alot for Homer. But most of the time Homer isn't emotionally mature or intelligent enough to understand this, to see both good and bad in Abe. His father did what he could in umfavorable situation. 15:20, but that's really how it is sometimes. Sometimes it just doesn't work out. Sometimes you can't coincide with the people you care about, you can only be close to them for a fleeting close-approach, then you are lost forever. Its sad, but it definitely happens to people. And as a whole, Homer is pretty lucky he's had someone who has cared about him like Marge has. She is undoubtedly a good influence on him, and cares about him extremely, and is there for him to love back, which is just as important for a person.
I like the complexity of Mona's character. She's equally portrayed as a genuinely loving human being, and as a selfish, care free person. The genius of it is that it sounds contradictory on paper, but it's ultimately a truly realistic depiction for a fictional character.
@@WobblesandBean I've sprayed Sheep Wool Oil (Lanolin) on the bottom of my car, to prevent rust. (It's sold as "Fluid Film," and it's a great rust *preventer.)* Smelling it for an hour or more drove my brain crazy even outside the garage, and not in a good way. Clearly, I'm not a Scotsman.
My father died a year ago. Watching this video not only reminded me of Mona's story (and taught me that it carried on far beyond the time I dropped the show) but the parts about Homer and Todd missing their parents also brought back memories of Dad and how much I miss him. I cried a few times watching this, I'm afraid. I'm very happy they finally ended Homer and Mona's story on such a lovely if sad note. I'll have to find these new episodes and see them for myself!
Mona’s Absence also made his relationship with Marge all that more interesting. She does in many ways fill that role of Homer’s mother, and in Mother Simpson, I kinda wish that end scene had Marge wall up to Homer and comfort him
The line "I thought I dreamed that kiss" freaking gets me everytime 😭 Also can we talk about how little Homer's favorite stuffed animal is the Pillsbury Doughboy? That's perfect.
As a man who's been in this situation before, Homer's story with Mona and Abe hits really close to home. From finding ways to cope with it, having to deal with them fighting constantly, and all the other effects divorce has on a parent, it's really hard on the kids the most. And I pray every day that I don't ever end up putting my kid through what I went through.
Mona Simpson is for me my main suspect for having shot Mr Burns - from all the Simpsons family members, she is the one with best motive for it (and the fact that she appears to Homer for the 1st time in decades only a few episodes after Mr Burns was shot is very suspicious), so it astounds me that you have not made a "Who Really Shot Mr Burns" video about such theory.
Given she's not present in the episode in even the slightest way means there's no way in which to watch them with that theory recontexualizing anything. Like, imagine what a video about that would even involve. "Mona did it. She had a motive...that's it." There's no evidence or subtext in the scenes in which to use. And that's not even getting into the whole DNA evidence and Maggie issue.
It may be a comedy show, but that seen of Homer sitting on the hood of his car watching the sun go down and remaining under a starry sky has always made me emotional.
I didn't realize they went so in-depth into Homer's childhood in the later seasons. I weirdly identify with him like I'm sure other people do. Definitely a Melancholy subject
In retrospect Mona Simpson didn't let death stop her from being with her son, emotional mother & son moments will always make the person who lost their mom cry.
Maybe we can one day get a history of, the most developed and clearly greatest Simpsons character, Luigi. His arc is outstanding and probably the greatest thing to come out of the show
I am so chuffed you've done this. I adore Mona and Mother Simpson remains my favorite Simpsons ending, I'm incredibly saddened by her send off and felt it was a disservice to the character.
maybe she was killed off just in case Glenn Close A) became overly busy with acting B) passed away unexpectedly C)the Simpsons came to an end/was cancelled or D) didn't want to reprise the role anymore.
You adore a woman who cheated on her husband and abandoned her son just to go bang a bunch of dirty hippies? And before you say she needed to run because the law was after her, she could have taken Homer with her and run away to Canada or just not become an activist in the first place. Mona is one of the most selfish people in the show and I'm glad shes gone.
Mona is a fantastic character and she deserved a way better send off than she had. You could see how much she cared about homer and how difficult leaving was for her. She should’ve only appeared in mother Simpsons. Nothing beats that ending.
I love how Marge fills Homer’s void, she is really the best mother and wife and needs more recognition from the Simpsons fans. It’s a real shame that Mona couldn’t have been a more permanent character, she is so wholesome and it would be nice to have seen her and Marge work together to raise the kids and stopping Homer’s schemes.
Great Simpsons Histories. Mother Simpsons is definitely one of the best episodes in the series, and I think of it as The Simpsons equivalent of Jurassic Bark. Great job as always Jim, and I think Groundskeeper Willie would be cool since he's always been a really amusing character.
Regarding the development of his childhood’s portrayal, it seems to mirror a psychological shift in Homer too. It wouldn’t surprise me if he had repressed most of his shitty childhood, and meeting his previously-“dead” mother shook something in his unconscious that led to him remembering more and more of it, further influencing his personality and causing him to behave in erratic ways. I guess what I’m trying to say is that even if unintentional on the writers’ part, Homer’s actions and seemingly odd guilts and weird memories are all plausible.
You made me laugh with the BoJack reference at the end. The flashbacks to Abe Simpson have some similarities with the flashbacks to Butterscotch Horseman, but Grandpa in the present is less of a dark portrait.
You know, seeing how much of a negative influence Abe was in Homer’s life, being uncaring and aloof, constantly arguing with his wife in-front of young homer, getting drunk, taking the pie recipe box, throwing it away and lying to homer about it, I can kinda see why Homer and the rest of the Simpson family keep trying to dump him at the old folks home...
At least Abe didn't abandon him just to go sleep with a bunch of dirty hippies. I consider Mona entirely responsible for homers crappy upbringing. She could have taken Homer with her but instead left him with a neglectful father who is now a bitter, broken man on top of that thanks to his wife leaving him.
@@CaptainTripps420 Life on the run with a single mother, even one as caring as Mona, might have actually messed Homer up even more and made him an even _less_ productive member of society.
So, abe goes to war, comes back, gets homer, goes to work so his family can survive, meanwhile mona leaves homer alone to go protest meaning abe comes home from work and is expected to take care of him, then mona leaves because her own need matter more to her. Yet abe is the bad one huh.
@@newdarkneoss3985Y'all, they are both horrible parents. But in opposite ways, Abe was an a provider to homer but offered no emotional support , Mona offered emotional love support but was not a good parent. they are two opposite extremes, it's clear in homer have both of them traumatizing him has shaped him. But i think why people are more willing to forgive Mona vs ave is as simple as the cloth monkey experiment. doesn't matter the wealth you provide, what you try to do. If you are unable to be loving or gentle to a child, a child is going to rather have a useless soft parental figure
I felt that Mona was a way for homer to regain his humanity during the later seasons because whenever his mom was a main part of the story I get a feeling of the homer from the first seasons, that homer was a sort of dimwitted, but his heart was in the right place and that homer contrasts with modern homer being a jackass, so nice to see glimpses of humble homer throughout the later seasons.
It is one of the stories of the SImpsons that really affects anyone and everyone. It always felt like Homer Simpson's life is (in many ways) the life of a lot of people with single fathers but in his case, it's obvious that it's a pain he carries. He usually acts normal with his mother but it's obvious that too many years have gone by. It is sad.
I think Homer addiction to food is a combination of both. Whenever his mother would spend time with him they would make recipes and eat together(as homer is eating sugar when hugging his mom, he associate that as love). When she left him to join her hippie protest, he eats food to pretend that she’s there with him. As Dr. Phil would say while being digested by Homer “Love does not equal food”
This video made me cry so much it's so heartwarming and heartbreaking to see Moana homers mom walk into the bedroom while he's snuggling with his Pillsbury Doughboy plush toy and just leave him but it's still heartwarming to me
This was hard to watch There are no good answers to these things. Sometimes I feel like Grampa never gets any credit for being the one who stayed. That is what I liked about the paternity coot. To be honest I lean on the side of Mona was a bad mother and would get a little annoyed when the show would walk back Homer being angry at her. Not to sound like I let Grampa off the hook. Because he was a bad father, but he got called on it. Also he never seemed to find love About the season one line, it could be something Homer internalized about his mother. I guess the moral is people are flawed but have their good points.
Or something Abe told Homer, given Homer's memories of his mother were incomplete, and it adds to the running gag that Abe was an abusive father to Homer growing up.
Abe as a father is kind of a complicated subject, because most of the time we see he was a neglectful jerk and a terrible dad, but we also see a lot of good moments (and he did raise Homer alone) It's kind of a dark grey area, like Homer as Bart's father actually.
I feel like I should comment because the number of comments is 1,099 and that is uncomfortable. Great video though, I don't really know much about Mona Simpson, so this is very enlightening
Can we talk about how Mona died sitting in the same chair where Homer appeared to die in the Fugu episode? Almost the same shot even, with him checking on her like Marge checked on him.
I find it funny how Simpsons season 19 and king of the hill season 12 both air at the same time (late 2007 to early 2008) and they both had episodes where the one of the main character's parent's died
Just wow, this video showed me that if anything has been done well in the series so far, it's the story development of Mona, Abe and Homer. Maybe the only turn on the series that I really like, how they turned Homer from a carefree kid not really knowing what happened, to a emotional traumatized kid dealing with it now adult. Also, really strong video.
I wouldn't call Wiggum a "lighter" topic, especially given how corrupt and incompetent police are. It's like he's not even a caricature anymore, but a relatively realistic portrayal.
Burns or smithers would be great next! I really liked this one, you did a fantastic job of discussing the nuances of Homer and Grampas' characters in regards to Mona's influence
I agree. This whole story does make you really appreciate marge more. We all know she fell for him because he’s sweet and when push comes to shove he does the right thing. I'm deeply saddened that Homer never got to really experience a childhood with his mother nor have her in his life unless she's on the run. It really makes me sad that this part of Homer's life was forever changed and he had nothing to do with it.
In my opinion, only Ape Simpson should know how much of a demon in the sack Mona( aka Muggy May) was.
It seems as if her arc has concluded. I like when you do episodes on concludes arcs.
Can we put a pin on talking about Nelson's mom. She has an interesting history since she's changed appearance every time she's been on screen.
I can only remember one of those times. This is really interesting.
That's a really funny gag if intentional
What? No she doesn't. She always appears with shoulder length brown hair and an expression that suggests she's a junkie. Sometimes the hair is a bit darker but she's always clearly the same character.
She'd be interesting for a Histories vid

@@mankytoes
I disagree.
Goes to show that even in death she cares more about sticking it to the man then being a good mother.
For Simpsons Histories I'd love to see one one done for Moe Syzlack, as I would love to see the perspective of going from a mean bartender who doesn't care, to when he was the bartender who listens, to when he eventually became a pseudo uncle to Maggie.

The “you’re a disappointment” line could easily be Homer misinterpreting things as thinking it’s directed at him when really it was most probably directed at his father Abe.
"I'll finally know what J stands for. From this moment forth, I shall be known as Homer..JAY Simpson"

Probably from her father, or swearing not being common back then, or both

Ugh that episode was so good! It’s one of the only Simpsons episodes that made me cry.
Pamela Hayden ended up saying her “D’oh!” because Glenn Close couldn’t prefect it.
Yeah, people shit on the new episodes but theres some good stuff there.

When this video first came out, I couldn't watch it. My own mother had just been admitted to the hospital. She passed 2 weeks later. Since then, I seen this video recommended to me quite a few times. This actually makes sense sence homer acts like a child because he didn’t have a good childhood so as an adult we expressed his childhood finally because he really didn’t hear his parents argue so he expresses his feeling after years of waiting and not listening.
"I thought I dreamt that kiss." Homer's line made me want to burst into tears.
Mother Simpson is such an emotional episode for me.
"Simpsons is not Bojack Horseman or anything. Even if Homer did get The View From Halfway Down."

Well said
Abe cheated on her first with a prostitute; that's where Herb comes from. So it might've been revenge adultery.
When you're 14 minutes into the video and finally realize ''Oooooooooooh, because it's Mother's day!''
@@TheRealJims
Hope you do one for Abe on father's day
Think a lot of the grief that Abe gets probably is deserved.
And I do agree that Abe needs more positive highlight epsiodes. Even if people around him do not take him seriously or pay attention to his stories, I think we, the viewers love to see glimpses of his past.

Gotta say, this channel is really becoming one of my favourites on youtube. Keep it up.

I'm very happy they finally ended Homer and Mona's story on such a lovely if sad note. I'll have to find these new episodes and see them for myself!
Mona’s Absence also made his relationship with Marge all that more interesting. She does in many ways fill that role of Homer’s mother, and in Mother Simpson, I kinda wish that end scene had Marge wall up to Homer and comfort him
I'm sure she did when he went home but I think he just needed some time to himself to reflect
You've been cranking out the videos, these past few weeks. Thanks for the entertainment!
The line "I thought I dreamed that kiss" freaking gets me everytime 😭
Also can we talk about how little Homer's favorite stuffed animal is the Pillsbury Doughboy? That's perfect.
As a man who's been in this situation before, Homer's story with Mona and Abe hits really close to home. From finding ways to cope with it, having to deal with them fighting constantly, and all the other effects divorce has on a parent, it's really hard on the kids the most. And I pray every day that I don't ever end up putting my kid through what I went through.
This video got me emotional. The loss of a somebody close can really affect anyone, so it's a good thing that the show explored it.
The fact that she knew what *DAY* her ashes were going to be scattered at 3p.m. unfortunately points to premeditated action on her part...
And like her entire life.it has less to do about homer and All about her
Mona Simpson is for me my main suspect for having shot Mr Burns - from all the Simpsons family members, she is the one with best motive for it (and the fact that she appears to Homer for the 1st time in decades only a few episodes after Mr Burns was shot is very suspicious), so it astounds me that you have not made a "Who Really Shot Mr Burns" video about such theory.
Bringing in something from a past episode isn't a very good mystery.

This entire episode just feels so sad. And the argument the night she passes has always haunted me. I couldn’t imagine how that would affect me

Somehow you managed to make me cry when you brought up homers dream sequence… all my loved ones that are gone only exist in my memories too.
God it just got worse towards the end… thanks for unlocking a bunch of hidden trauma I didn’t know I had in my subconscious mind.
The new seasons may not be great but their flashback episodes are always been good imo
You should do a Simpsons Histories on The Bumblebee Man.
OMG YES
Favorite Mona moment is her "D'oh!" after telling Homer he'll always be apart of her. It's the best emotional-laugh joke in the whole show.
To be a fly on the wall when Glenn Close said DOH
Brilliant dissection of the stories, genuinely enjoyable watch despite the melancholy
I just wanted to say I love this video and thank you for adding animal gc music it fit perfectly

There are no good answers to these things.
Also he never seemed to find love
About the season one line, it could be something Homer internalized about his mother.
I guess the moral is people are flawed but have their good points.
Or something Abe told Homer, given Homer's memories of his mother were incomplete, and it adds to the running gag that Abe was an abusive father to Homer growing up.
Abe as a father is kind of a complicated subject, because most of the time we see he was a neglectful jerk and a terrible dad, but we also see a lot of good moments (and he did raise Homer alone)
It's kind of a dark grey area, like Homer as Bart's father actually.
Maybe Abe would have been a better father if his cheating wife didn't abandon him and force him to raise Homer by himself.

Just wow, this video showed me that if anything has been done well in the series so far, it's the story development of Mona, Abe and Homer. I really liked this one, you did a fantastic job of discussing the nuances of Homer and Grampas' characters in regards to Mona's influence
I agree. This whole story does make you really appreciate marge more. We all know she fell for him because he’s sweet and when push comes to shove he does the right thing. He’s a stubborn ass like his father but a loving man who does what’s right with a kind heart like his mother, but marge is what stabilizes him from going off the deep end.
