Function: Whenever a creature with flying attacks you, Raking Canopy deals 4 damage to it.
TCG Plater price: $0.15
A static 4 damage effect to flyers attacking you can shut down a shockingly large number of creatures in the urly to mid game and can help with larger creatures later on.
An example would be Alela, Artful Provocateur, a 2/3 flying Esper commander seen in this video. Raking Canopy can both one shot her if she attacks, but also kills all the 1/1 Faerie tokens she creates.

Two years ago I supported the Academic Kickstarter and pledged for a student exclusive 133+ Academic and a size morph divider. I never received these items.
I messaged the account on Kickstarter and was told that if there were any left over after the orders were fulfilled that I could get mine. I assumed that there weren't any leftover since I never got a message back.
So here I am, looking at the site that had leftovers and lo and behold they still have the academic. I just want the thing thought I paid for almost 24 months ago, please I've been a fan of this channel ever since you reviewed Dragon Shield sleeves and showed off your Merfolk deck in them.

Public enemy reads "2U, aura, goad the player to your left and across the table from you. Draw a card if the player to your right doesn't lose the game before their upkeep". Very good in muldrotha.
I'm a little confused. The card doesn't read that at all. What do you mean?
@kincaid1031it doesn't literally read that but that's how it plays in practice. put it on a creature owned by the player to your right during your second main phase, and the next two players have to throw all their creatures at the player to your right during their next turns. if the creature you enchanted is killed, you draw a card, but there's a good chance it results in the owner of the enchanted creature just losing before your next turn.

Note how these cards are from Universes Beyond and the set commander decks. Of course these cards fly under the radar when the market is saturated with new releases to the point that we barely have time to upgrade our deck with the obvious bombs, let alone the weird niche stuff.
Even more under the radar- Sardian Avenger was from the set booster exclusive commander cards, not a precon.

My favorite budget card is Foil. It's a counterspell you can cast for free by discarding an Island and another card. I run it in my mono-blue Kami of the Crescent Moon deck, where I have so much card advantage that it's Force of Will but for 25 cents.
How much for a foil Foil? If there even is one.

Calming Verse is one the only 3-sided enchantment wipes in the game, Mercadia's Downfall is like a stronger Price of Progress if you've got enough 1/1s, and you can never forget about Congregate, 3W for ~40 lifegain at instant speed!
Thanks for posting this. Made me realize that I have all of these except for Downfall. The only other one I could find is Cleansing Meditation, which relies on Threshold (and would also get rid of your roles and other tokens.) The tap-out spells got much better after they did away with mana burn.
Over the past weekend at MagicCon Chicago I built a deck only using cards I bought at the show or opened from packs I got at the show. One of the cards I found while filling out the deck while searching through a bulk box was the card "Intrepid Hero". I was building a voltron control deck with Dragonlord Ojutai as the commander so thought that card would probably fit just fine even though it didn't contribute to the overall theme. In the few games I played it, it removed a few big creatures, served as a strong rattlesnake card, and was a lightning rod for removal, allowing other things to go by.

This dude is a powerhouse in any blink decks, especially those that grant double triggers on etb! With Yarok and Dreamstone Curio it gets nasty quickly!
Edit: oh yeah, it *doesn't* say target, so if there's a permanent you normally can't target, well here ya go!

19:50 You missed Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph as a great home for Sardian Avenger - turns each ping into 3 but gives you access to blue where Ojer is mono red. That's the deck where mine found his home.
I've a complete Ghyrson Goblins deck. Turns out 1/1 Goblin tokens are sources that deal 1 damage. 🔫🔫🔫
@SmashmanVideos yup, my ghyrson deck is heavy on goblins, also runs things like song of totentanz for other token creation. Also goblin chainwhirler is amazing at doing 1 damage.
So happy to see Leyline Binding at home make it onto this list.

For me, personally, the first card that came to mind when seeing Loamcrafter Faun was Splendid Reclamation.
Aid from the Cowl is honestly a great card I never see anyone use. It works very well with any token you sacrifice.
I ran it in my Vaevictus deck that was 98% permanent. Felt great to just go "Since I sacced that token earlier I get to put X onto the battlefield."
Banish Into Fable is one of my favorites in my Council of Four deck, and its less than 20 cents.
4WB Instant - When you cast this spell from your hand, copy it if you control an artifact, then copy it if you control an enchantment. You may choose new targets for the copies.
Return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand. You create a 2/2 white Knight creature token with vigilance.
Not uncommon to get both extra copies, bouncing 3 targets and getting 3 vigilant 2/2 knights.
I think Hesitation and Standstill are really funny cards to drop at the end of your turn. Lots of people have never seen them before, and just freeze up and don't know what to do once they're on the table.
... Okay Standstill is like 5 bucks, but whatever! Proxying is cool and sexy.

Broken Bond is a green ramp card that costs 2 mana that let's you destroy target artifact/enchantment while also letting place a land onto the battlefield. For any Commander that uses Green, I feel like it's the perfect removal for decks heavy on punishing enchantments or ramps, and it's only a .30 cent card. At 2 mana, it's also easily played early on curve or saved for later with a defensive counterspell if someone tries to block it.
Earlier this week I was thinking about adding Sontaran General into my Commander Mustard deck. Gonna try him out this weekend

Slagstone Refinery's a must-have for any artifact deck. Any removal your opponent deploys against your artifacts nets you a mana rock for your next turn. I got board wiped once with Slagstone Refinery in play and wound up winning next turn because of the 8 new Powerstones I had to work with.

Frontier Warmonger is a personal favorite of mine. For a 7 cent card, it's really incredible to be able to just give absolutely everything you control menace for a 4 mana 4/4. Plus, it's a human warrior, which has potential synergy in human decks (like my personal favorite commander, Jirina Kudro) and with any deck that can pop off of the warrior subtype like Prof mentioned here.
Sardian avenger does great work in krenko as a low to the ground goblin that keeps the treasure theme in check

layline imersion is a personal favorite of mine. It's a 4 mana aura that enchants a legendary creature give's it ward 2 and let's it tap for 5 mana. There are so many commanders that don't want to attack, have vigilance or just don't end up attacking for one reason or another, that this card can be slaped on to get so much mana, and the commanders are usally one you want to stick around so they actully aprritiate the ward 2. the fact it gives you one more mana than you spent one always feels great to and it's on curve for any 3 cost commanders that meet the above conditions. All in all the card just feels great to play.
As an aura it suffers from being 2-for-1ed and a significant amount of commanders in green want to swing. That said I've had it do great work in Kiora, Sovereign of the Deep. As she already has Ward 3 it makes her virtually hexproof and easy to cast without getting sniped in response. She also has vigilance and really cares about big mana spells, I'm fairly certain they designed the two in mind given they were both in Aftermath.
Auto included in my Gwenna, Eyes of Gaea who untaps whenever you cast a creature spell with power >4. Instantly terrifying if it resolves
I love that card in my Raggadragga deck. Since it then essentially reads: Ward 2, tap: get 5 mana, enchanted creature gets +2/+2, and pseudo-vigilance.

I've had a Sardian Avenger sitting around for so long but I just haven't found a spot for it yet. Definitely gonna consider Loamcrafter Faun for my Gitrog deck though and I love Tallyman of Nurgle when I bust out my Warhammer 40K Chaos Marines deck!
I’ve always been a huge fan of Riftstone portal. It’s just over a dollar nowadays, but it’s always been an auto include in any of my Selesnya decks.
Since Im not buying sealed cardboard anymore, treated myself to a shiny rock to support my favourite mtg creator instead! Keep up the good work

Sardian Avenger is one of the cards I hated to cut from my Vazi because of purely thematic concerns. It, and Fangren Marauder, both do outrageous work with her, but didn't fit the Capenna Mob Boss vibe so they got the bounce. I still miss the little goblin though

Jaws of Stone in Ojer Axonii. With just 6 mountains you can distribute 24 damage to anything on the field
Repulsive Mutation in Aragorn, the Uniter. Even just casting for X=0 with Aragorn out lets you pump him to 9/9 and they have to pay 9 or get their spell countered, plus you get to scry 2
I never heard of Titania's song until recently. Old card that hasn't been reprinted in over 20 years. It's sitting at 98 cents, so it just barely slides in, but it's very good if you're in a low artifact deck. 4 mana enchantment and it turns all artifacts into creatures equal to their mana cost. Since token artifacts have no cmc, they'll just all be removed and shut out. It's a quite effective artifact hoser in my Greensleeves deck.
I really like Sardian Avenger. Definitely gonna try to fit him in a deck.

Another card that I feel like has flown under the radar for token themed decks is Gruesome Fate. Definitely a good fit for some of the token commanders that have come out lately with black in their identity like Marneus Calgar or Ceasar, but also can fit well as an alternate way to win for more traditional commanders like Prossh, and unlike similar cards like Purphoros or Impact Tremors, this pays off once you've already assembled a board presence rather than needing to be in play prior to generating all your tokens making the win more likely to seem to come out of nowhere.
So what you are saying Professor is that these 6 cards will be in an upcoming Secret Lair release - based on their respected value!?!

I have a Sardian Avenger. I tried playing it my Winota stax deck to punish those greedy Treasure decks, but I have never had it pay off. the other 5 are solid includes into some of my decks although, I'm not a fan of Azorious colours, but I might build a Bant commander in the future... maybe Phelddagrif 🙂 But the other 4 are very solid for sure.
All of the six cards are cool but also very niche, I have a treasure for you, which can fit in any white deck, cause its straight up the best boardwipe in commander: Tragic Arrogance, for only five Mana you take your opponents best permanents, hexproof and indestrutible are irrelevant, and leave them with only little tokens or manarocks, and its a great politics tool to forge alliences and get favors from your opoonents, while you keep your commander and best stuff, and the card is available for 50ct, every time i casted it, it blew me away how strong it is
I would say “changling outcast”is under appreciated. Especially in tribal decks.

I think that Elenda has become a monster of a commander in recent years due to recent cards that is going really under-appreciated, and she lets you build a fantastic wide board within about 4 turns if you play her right.
Anduril, Narsil Reforged can let you build a really fantastic wide board rather quickly.
Ojer Taq is a perfect suplament and finale to her playstyle and token generation.
Ozilith is just... 'Amazing with her' and the support.
Meathook massacre is a really solid pick.
Shadowspear/Rogue's passage lets you take advantage of a big Elenda to finish games.
Moonshaker Cavalry lets you take advantage of the wide board.
White Sun's Twilight lets you commit to both a board wipe and a post board with Elenda.
I think that there's a ton of potential with her which isn't being used since she was an underwhelming commander at launch until the rules change tbqh.
I also think there's a good series which could be done by looking back at old commanders and trying to update them with more modern cards.

Crypt Incursion is great
If you plan to mill your opponents at all and have room for black in your CI, it's almost essential
Exiling all creatures from someone's yard and gaining 3 life for each at instant speed is surprisingly powerful and relevant, especially if you're getting mobbed for playing mill
Touch The Spirit Realm is somehow under a dollar, which can serve as a piece of removal OR a way to duck your most valuable dude out from a board wipe. Offense AND defense in one card, one of my very favourites, no doubt.
Nevermore may be considered poor sportsmanship, if you use it on someone's commander, but some commanders need a little bit of slowing down, and can punish people who completely forsook spot removal in favour of playing solitaire. Not to mention, if an opponent's got half of a two card combo out already (Looking at Ob Nixilis, Kingpin players, in particular) a nevermore can ease table tensions about a sudden blowout while allowing said opponent to still play.
I have that encyclopedia on my shelf too!

Soldevi Adnate, from Alliances. 1B for a 1/2 Human Cleric that taps and sacs a black or artifact creature to add B equal to that card's mana value.
Vesper Ghoul, from Dissension: 2B for a 1/1 Zombie Druid that taps and pays 1 life to generate one mana of any color.
You should do this again but none budget old cards. There’s a lot of old cards that I play or seen play that everyone says “I didn’t know that even existed.” It would be an interesting episode to watch.
kardur, doomscourge always gets brought up when talking about other goad cards but I never felt like stuffing a kardur deck full of redundant goad effects was the way to go with hm. if you can get kardur to enter the battlefield every turn cycle you don't really need anything else that goads. sacrifice/reanimate effects, blink/flicker effects like conjurer's closet or cards that can create a token copy of him like delina, wild mage or orthion, hero of lavabrink that will also activate any death triggers are the way to go i think. and you can fill out the rest of the deck with treason effects to get even more damage out of your opponent's creatures and potentially sacrifice anything you find problematic for you before giving it back.

Plea for power- it's a 4 cost sorcery that has will of the council. best case scenario you take an extra turn, worst case you draw 3. and for 4 mana (3 colorless and 1 blue) Id argue either way your getting a good deal...

It's a little more than $1 (assumedly because it's never been reprinted since Fallen Empires), but I'm astounded that Rainbow Vale isn't more popular in Commander. Tapping for one of any color is huge, and if you play the politics right, you're not ramping an enemy, you're ramping an ally. OR, you enchant it with stuff like Psychic Venom or Chronic Flooding to make them pay a little more for using it. Or give it Wellspring to make sure you get it back on your turn. Wanna put a clock on your hot potato land? Give it Orcish Mine (THAT'S RIGHT I'M RECOMMENDING A HOMELANDS CARD COME AT ME). The fun is endless!

Holey Moley, was not expecting the music at 12:05, which Dead Meat also uses, lol. I'm guess it's a DRM free tune or something, but have never heard it outside of Dead Meat so thought it was maybe a tune made for them, still, unexpected to hear in an MtG video for me, lol.

Judge! Kykar unfortunately doesn't let you double up the mana with sacrificing + convoke. The window for activating mana abilities comes before the window for payment in the process of casting a spell. If you sac it for mana, it won't be there when it's time to pay with convoke, and if you use it to convoke, it's too late to sacrifice it for mana.
