This was my childhood playground during 1950s-60s when it was closed and overgrown pathways just added to the awe and fascination. Climbing the locked gates was rewarded by hours of exploration during school holidays. It was my ‘Secret Garden’ - inspired by reading the Frances Hodgson Burnett book in junior school. What an adventure and totally captivating. The wildlife, flowers and atmosphere were such a joy. Thanks for sharing this lovely memory ❤️👍🏾
it seems the youth of Stokey used to do this, me and my m8's where in the 80's. You had Abney and Clissold Park, used to stay till it was dark, when all the gates where closed, and had to find a good wall to climb
Yes, Abney is one I hadn't heard of but , as it's the nearest to E4 where my daughter's live I shall be heading there soon . So far I've had a few walks in Chingford Mount looking for the grave of my half cousin & got a huge surprise when I found where his headstone had been erected in 1968...gone now ! However, there were several plots, together, absolutely covered in flowers, letters (fan letters as it turned out) ...they were the graves of the Kray twins , their family and, heartbreakingly , Frances , Reggie's wife...just shows you how much history must be held in all London cemeteries 😮
compared to the 80's, a lot of work has been done and it's not neglect, it's been allowed to grow wild and it's give it so much character, plenty of small paths criss cross it , where you can find solitude with just birds, squirrels and the trees.
Hi all. I appreciate at first sight Abney can seem 'uncared for'. However it is NOT being 'restored to its former glory'. It is already a glorious, well loved and managed nature reserve (continuing its original purpose as a park and green space). The greenery including (especially) the ivy and other undergrowth covering graves is an incredibly valuable habitat for all kinds of wildlife from bugs to birds. There is NO BATTLE with nature - the site is nature's legally protected home. The restoration work is to the listed former office/workshop buildings at the High St entrance and the funeral chapel (not consecrated, purely a space for funeral ceremonies) at the centre, and also involves the creation of a cafe, office/visitors centre and classroom near the high st entrance. However, the rest of the site will be maintained as a rich green space and legally protected nature reserve. Thanks for appreciating the unique beauty of this space for all life human and non-human!
In town's like the one I live where so many habitats are either lost or in the process of being destroyed our cemetery is a rare area of biodiversity ( as well as a haven of peace for the living as well as the dead ) . ✌️
I love Victorian cemeteries like Highgate, so beautiful and Gothic. I have never seen this one before, thanks for the excellent tour and history of the place!
Today Sinead was my company on the treadmill at the gym I love these cemetery walks because of their calm atmosphere. It's like a portal to another dimension in the middle of the city. Thank you, Sinead 💚
This cemetery is the perfect mix of faded grandeur with an air of mystery and magic, lots of winding pathways leading to secret places overgrown with beautiful vines and wildflowers. So much nicer than pristine headstone poking out of a perfectly manicured patch of grass. Thank you for a wonderful tour of this beautiful place🌸 🌳 🪦

Another stunning cemetery tour. I wished I could have gone on the walk with you. I love the history you provide and the calmness of the cemeteries you go to. Bless you. Keep up the awesome work.
Been waiting for the return of the magnificent 7 Love this series of cemetery tours by the wonderful Sinead.. Great knowledge and well delivered in that soft Irish accent x
Hi Sinead, as someone who suffers rather with anxiety, watching your tours I find very soothing and takes my mind off of myself. Please keep them coming. Thank you so much :)
Lovely! Just so lovely! Not only the tour of this beautiful old cemetery, but to hear that wonderful lilting voice of my favorite tour guide, Sinead. Lady, I believe I could listen to you read an encyclopedia and it would be entertaining just to hear that soft, soothing, Irish lilt. I am a chronic insomniac and you just don’t know how many nights the sound of your beautiful voice has been a lullaby to ease me off into sleep. It works as nothing else does. I always look for you especially when new videos have been posted. I love the others as well, but you just have that something a little extra. Prayers that life is treating you well! Keep up the great work. Free Tours by Foot-London has a real treasure in you. ❤️
I live in the area and go for a walk in Abney Park pretty much every day - I’m very excited by this tour and will definitely take notes ahead of my next walk! Thank you 🙏
@@silverstars7882 Most of the old pubs are still here, the Old Shillelagh, the Red Lion, the Rose and Crown, Church St is mainly restaurants, pubs, little cafes, a violin shop, bike shop and it still has the unique feel, the only 'brand' shop is Nandos, which replaced the old Vortex Jazz club, a lot of small independent business's, craft, toy, clothes, green grocers shops, even a posh butcher and health food supermarket. It's become quite posh and houses are very expensive. the biggest shock is the 106 bus is reliable, and there are more bus routes not just the classic 73.

Great stuff Sinead, factual and very interesting. It's a shame so many of the headstones are overgrown with ivy and plants but I understand it would be an impossible task for a gardener to cut all that back continually! Loved your Jack The Ripper tour too -though I regret having looked at that colourised final photo -now burnt into my memory! Ah well, it's not like you didn't warn us -I can't "unsee" it now! You have the voice and accent I could listen to for days! Thank you! 😊
Great tour Sinead, thank you. So peaceful and quiet. Love that nature is taking over some of the graves. Good that much of it is being cleared too, to enable people to walk their dogs, or simply take time out, from the hustle and bustle of City life.
Thank you so much for these wonderful videos, I'll probably never ever get to see this place, but I do love graveyards and hearing your wonderful stories as you walk around them.
Thank you Sinead for the tour of Abney Park, such a beautiful and peaceful place also thanks for explaining some of the Victorian symbolism on the grave stones
Hi Sinead! Great tour as always. I’m really happy to hear that they’re going to restore this cemetery. It looks like it’s really falling into neglect. Looks like a very peaceful place to hang out. The neighbors are quiet. Sorry I couldn’t help myself lol. Really enjoyed it thanks again. From me in California💜🍀🤟🏻😎🇺🇸
Beautiful tour. In recent years, as I have worked on family genealogy, I've gotten intrigued with cemeteries. During the quarantine, a friend and I would take short trips out into the countryside near where we live with a cup of coffee. We did it just to get out of the house but ended up stopping at cemeteries. Oddly, in several I found graves of people I had known but never knew where they were buried. In one, we found a grave of a person who'd died in the late 1800's. It had one of those Victorian fences around it and the poor plot was over grown with thorny cat brier. We went home and got tools and cleaned it up. We drive by every now and then to make sure it is still clear. The cemetery itself is mowed by someone but no one had given this grave any care.
Another wonderful tour, l was able to spend a few weeks in the UK this summer and although I wasn’t able to see any London cemeteries I was able to see Eleanor Rigbys grave in Liverpool. She died on my birthday, just decades earlier !
I so appreciate the extent of research & physical searching you go to Sinead. I only just found you this month but watch for your new videos whilst going through all your older ones....don't want to miss any of your amazing content ❤
Thank you Sinead, another of the magnificent 7 London cemetery's. ❤️ What an oasis if peace in a very busy London borough. I look forward to seeing the next one on the list. 😘❤️🇬🇧
I think the restoration is very timely. I read that they were going to make it very special. Wonderful tour as always Sinead. What I find interesting is that some of the monuments you were showing (such as the cut pillar) and some of the urns with the draped lace edged cloths, the crosses and flower designs - these exact designs are also found decorating the graves in Australia (same time period). I didn't notice it as much in the last cemetery tours, but Abney Cemetery seems to have many. It would be lovely to revisit this cemetery when the restoration is complete. Thankyou Sinead - I always enjoy your cemetery tours. 💖💖
I was born and raised in Stoke-Newington, as a child I use to go for walks around the cemetery. I also went with the Salvation Army once to see the tomb of the Booth family. Thank you for this great video.
So many headstones, so many people, so many stories that could be told. Sinead, you have a way of making a walk through a cemetery very interesting and so enjoyable. The amount of undergrowth is amazing when you walk off the foot path, to walk among the headstones. The respect you show in cemeteries and churches is impressive, that respect will come back to you. Thanks for the history of the Salvation Army. I look forward to more from Ireland..... Thank you.
I just love it when nature takes over! It's certainly taken over in my little garden, I will leave it now until February to see what surprises nature has left for me! Another interesting video, thank you - I will enjoy reading about Joanna Vassa and the Booth's....
Now quite expensive to visit at around £16 and over £40 for a family. English Heritage ☺Went there in 1992 and it was open, peaceful and atmospheric, just a little shop there. We went down to Merlin's Cave and the beach, and up to the ruins. There were steep slopes, sheer drops and uneven surfaces but it was all free and very memorable.
Thanks! Thanks! I do enjoy your tours. I’m retired. I would like to send more money. My pension isn’t that great. Best wishes Sinead! I still hope that you will tour NYC at Christmas someday.
So peaceful and beautiful, I feel so sad for all the paupers graves so sad. I love the Victorian era so interesting. Another fantastic tour Sinead thank you.
So Glad to hear of the restoration, of Abney Park Cometary. My Great Grandfather, Grandmother & Other family are buried here. One Day I'd love to visit, perhaps once completed.
Thanks so much for this. My grandparents are buried there and I am going to visit them with my mum and family in the summer (four generations) . What a beautiful place. Your commentary style is perfect, so gentle and easy to listen to... Well done and best wishes

I used to play in Abney Park Cemetery as a child 60 years ago it was wonderful and I remember Queenie a lovely old lady who used to sell flowers from a wheelbarrow outside the main gates in stoke-Newington High St. Fantastic Cemetery with amazing graves lovely memories ❤😊

I'm glad to see that Abney Park Cemetery is being rest ored to its former glory. I've been there several times an I always loved this magnificent place.
I love that cemetery. If I ever get to London I want to spend some time there. It's so peaceful and spiritual, as you say. So very pleasant. I probably wouldn't feel that way at night but during the day it's lovely. Thanks for the tour! Hello from Maryland.

Hi Sinead, have you ever considered an 'Irish Troubles London Tour'? Here in Belfast there are loads of these tours but nothing on how the Troubles impacted London. I'm talking about Balcombe St, Hyde Park, Cheyne Walk, etc etc. Yes it would be sensitive but watching you on other tours I think you'd handle the subject perfectly!
@@fasthracing Nah, "sensitive"? no, ignorant, yes. You're assigning far too much credit to the public's general awareness these days. I can write a novel about today's perceptive failures. It really wouldn't make any difference at all. Most, especially younger, will have zero exposure, knowledge or a reasoned opinion on the subject. Unless it's trendy or is on a reality TV show.
Beautiful day and touring as those past years that has gone by this magnificent cemetery as this Day toward the memories of other lives gone by we just seen this by you gratefully appreciate

Stunning! I have to watch the cemetary videos at least three times in case I miss something
Loved it....thanks Sinead. How peaceful was it in there? No sounds just birds. As usual so much to learn. Thankyou x
New to your channel from the s/w States. After being captivated by several of your presentations I must say well done indeed. Love the asides of tid bits of information .
Carry on. 🍻
I'm glad to see that Abney Park Cemetery is being rest
ored to its former glory. I've been there several times an I always loved this magnificent place.
Sinead back in the cemetery where she belongs! 🤣 Sorry I had to say it. A wonderful video from my favorite RUclips tour guide.
I love that cemetery. If I ever get to London I want to spend some time there. It's so peaceful and spiritual, as you say. So very pleasant. I probably wouldn't feel that way at night but during the day it's lovely. Thanks for the tour! Hello from Maryland.
Thanks for watching, Barbara!

Doubt it would go down so well to be honest. People are still a bit sensitive about the subject.
That would be really interesting! I definitely want to watch that
@@fasthracing Nah, "sensitive"? no, ignorant, yes.
@@cdub5033 Yes very true
Hopefully She will see this and Do That Tour✌🏻🕊
Beautiful day and touring as those past years that has gone by this magnificent cemetery as this Day toward the memories of other lives gone by we just seen this by you gratefully appreciate
