I know it's late for the comment but I do love this bike. What a shame it has left us. I own a 68 xlch. Ive owned it for 20 years. It also has the zenith carb. Its a rider. I wanted to say the zenith is an upgrade because because it has an adjustable main jet which you can do on the fly. Comes in really handy if you are in altitude. I just really enjoy riding this bike. Ive rode it across country one time and it was the most real experience ever.

The late 60's era Sportsters were some of the best looking of bikes. You've really lived a good life if you've rode it cross country. Wahoo!

If you can master the internal throttle set up you will never go back. Super clean looking and super smooth.

The carb looks like a Bendix Zenith, but it may be the original Tillotson, I can't tell from the video.
In some ways the Bendix would be an upgrade but the Tillotson had it's supporters. The main issue with the Tillotson was the diaphragm in place of a float & bowl. If the diaphragm got hard it would stick open. When I had the stock one on my 71 I carried a bike spoke to poke the diaphragm through the vent hole on the bottom of the carb. The other problem with the Tillotson was that, because it's the same as a chainsaw carb, the bike would have run upside down. Once, while off-roading, I dropped the bike on the carb (with no air cleaner) and filled the cylinders with dirt as the bike never really wanted to stop.
The other difference (alluded to by another commenter) is that the carb was a "push" carb. The throttle was a worm grip and a SS wire. There was no spring return (which idiots & the government hated) so, cruse control was standard for that carb (probably a motorcycle first, along with anti-lock brakes which were sometimes not appreciated). Because it was a "push" wire, unless you were pretty clever, you had to get a reverse worm grip to swap carbs or ditch the internal wire. If anyone did ditch the internal throttle, they should have kept it in a box. The Sportster handlebars with that throttle bring quite a premium; and even more would be the handlebars on this bike because it undoubtedly has the left grip internal advance for the mag.
You make want to run right out there with my checkbook....don't tell the wife. She's still mad about the 71 Honda SL350 I just bought.

I ran into this bike at Baxter Cycle on a visit to look at a Royal Enfield. Later, I actually met the previous owner who told me that he had purchased the bike 20 years earlier from the widow of the person that had restored it. Also said that in those twenty years he had never ran or rode that beautiful bike once. Really a shame. The bike was sold and shipped to a buyer in France. My hopes are that they get it running and put some miles on it. These Iron head Sportsters are really things of beauty, even more so when they are running and rode. Don't really know much about the carb on this one but do appreciate all the info you posted. I've got a 76 Sportster that I actually put a Mikuni on. That mod was going to be temporary but I like it so much I'm keeping it. The original carb is in a box. Thanks again for your comments. Wahoo!

I suppose I've seen a few dozen over the years. Have only rode on a few iron heads, including my 76 sportster, and a few Evo sportsters too. Beautiful bikes...lots of work. They are all great bikes but to my eye the earliest ones are the best looking.

XL = Sportster , CH = Competition Hot ( slang I suspect ) bigger cams , higher compression , smaller countershaft sprocket and left grip should retard the mag so it doesn't send you over the bars - Intended to compete -W- Triumph & BSA's big Scrambler's in the market place - 1959 the Finest Vintage ..... same as me ............. Thanx Keith big fan of your Video's
