Heard this live in 2007 at Sibiu. I was waiting for the next band and this song came up. I was literally not prepared and it hit me like a bus. It was a trance, an extasy, something hard to describe but overly powerful almost to panic. Never a song hit me so hard and so deep. Her voice went to cosmic heights. I was not prepared..
I love this performance so much. Anneke's voice has healing properties for our hurting world. I wish she knew how much her performances mean to me and how much it matters. And this band...just magical cohesion. They captured lightning in a bottle with this performance .
Whoever is responsible for ads appearing in the middle of this should be ashamed of themselves. The song is not that long. Put one at the beginning or end, fine, but to have one right in the middle to break up the big build-up of this masterpiece is a crime against humanity.
I m 42, heard a billion of song in my life, mostly rock & different kind of metal, one of my fav was Saturnine (studio) and I heard this life version of Travel life one year ago. I think that I seriously heard it 250/300 Times since (roughly once per day) and I m already quite sure that this will be my Fav song for the rest of my life. I can t even described my feeling as it s a mix of pain, power, joice and sadness at the same time.
Years and years go by and I am listening to a lot of various music every day, among others The Gathering live at Paradiso, Amsterdam (2006) and the TG25 concert. I always highlight this gem. Always touched by the musicianship of the band and Anneke's voice that touches my soul.
Man, this is so amazing. It's not just a performance, it's a trip. A trip through beautiful musical landscapes. The music itself is very powerful, but Anneke's voice is beyond belief.
It's hard for me to explain what this song does to me. A nostalgic woman who I don't know where she comes from, I always end up with my eyes full of tears, she couldn't understand why
When I listened to this piece more than 20 years ago, I passed it almost imperceptibly. Today, after so many years, when I accidentally came back to it, I can't stop listening to it. It crushes, even tears from the inside of emotions. It's an amazing feeling.
Years and years go by and this one is still my favourite piece of music ever written. It's like floating in space with your feet on the ground. I always cry, but tears of joy and gratitude for the music. :')
That is absolutely right. With this song you are in another dimension. I have seen the band with Anneke many years ago playing it on highest level. I am blown away
I have never heard this song once where tears didn't form in my eyes. It's absolutely hypnotic. I've seen concerts by Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica etc but my one regret is that I never got to see The Gathering live.
Y en pleno concierto te dan ganas de llorar , en 2007 los pude ver y fue algo que aún me da nostalgia, nostalgia de que fue mágico y el mejor concierto de toda mi vida.
In 2023 'Strange Machines' ended up in the all time top 2000 most popular songs of The Netherlands. In 2024 dutchies could honour this exceptional band and singer by voting another one of their exquisite tracks into that top 2000. I suggest y'all vote for 'Travel', from the then 25 yo brilliant album HtMaP. :)
Another wonderful discovery for me. Anneke is beautiful and amazing. Thanks to the Areon project where she stood tall singing next to Floor Jansen in "Vally of The Queens".
I checked out some of her early live performances, and now I can see how she may have influenced Simone and Floor. Anneke moved like a flame on stage as she sang and watching her was a real thrill!
So stunning ! I cannot believe that The Gathering is virtually unknown in America . I found one of their songs on some college indie radio station. and I have been hooked ever since..
I’m American and just heard them for the first time a couple days ago. The live version of On Most Surfaces started playing on mix playlist. From the intro I thought it was it BRUTUS at first. Instantly fell in love and looked up more of their music. So sad I seem to have missed out on the hay day of this amazing band 😢
There are only 2 sounds in the world that can put tears in my eyes when I witness them live: Anneke's voice and David Gilmour's lead guitar. I'm so gutted that this concert went under my radar... I only found out shortly after.
Best song ever. I love it! When i was younger this music wasn't available. Maybe after Anneke breaking i knew all the albums. Nowadays this song is my piece of heaven in a resting day.
I don't think any performance has ever given me chills the way this one does from 4:30 onwards: up and down my back, down to my ankles, from the back of my head around to the front. Every single time. Phenomenal.
@@barsknos Mine too, while I am a fan of all vocalists of The Gathering throughout their career, this song is saturated by awesomeness before a choir comes in. It becomes too much, but you have no idea how shitty I feel for nitpicking this song. Perfection is a mirage, as they say- it's pointless to chase.
There are two songs that I can't help but get excited when listening to them, one is Cantiga de la memoria rota by Inti Illimani and the other is Travel, especially this version, it is a song that without a doubt will be the one with which I would like to be said goodbye to this world on the day of my funeral
I saw her here in Doornrosje the first time live with the Gathering, it must have been 1996 and I instantly fell in love with her and bought all of her Albums. And I have to say, I still love her. For me the best female singer in this universe!
This was absolutely incredible. I think Anneke put so much power and emotion into this song. Her singing was stunning. The music was awesome, and, with the singing, it all built up into an immensely powerful finish. Watching it makes me emotional, that is how strong the performance is.
A perfect storm. A massive, generous, powerful musical supernova. The guys enjoyed at max while invited us, the human kind, to this delightful cosmic performance that will remain during light years. Hope it touches some other astral beings just to testify the human kind path.. Thank you Gaths.
Commerce? If most people liked metal, it would be the most played genre on radios. I would say it's the lack of education in music. People listen to total garbage simply because they don't know anything else. If they listen to that garbage long enough, they begin like it. Human brain likes familiarity. If you already know some music, you tend to like it. Most people don't even care what they are listening to, they just want some background noise while doing something.
We're so lucky for this reunion. Better for me to have seen it on a screen instead of in real life because I would've probably died in a corner somewhere.
My compliments for the editing of fan video's to a live music video with such great quality that it could pass for a professionaly shot and edited video :)
The character (or Anneke) in this song listening to Mozart and swooning over the melodies is me listening to The Gathering and has been thus for almost 20 years.
The end of this when all of the singers from the band come out to cap off anneke's amazing performance. I don't usually get choked up but this one got me. This should have been the end of the show.
I love the Gathering! Have for years. I don't know anyone else who even knows who they are. I've seen many versions of travel and I can see it's obvious that it has meaning for Anneke.

Melodic stanzas
Are symphonizing their way
Through your weary head
To feed your distrust
And fill it's mouth with the desire
To soulfully be one with your creation
Not a subject to control
You call upon a higer power
For help and inspiration
The crowd waits
And turns their faces
Towards you expectantly
You give them what they need
But their useless criticism
Makes you die
A bit more inside
Not a subject to control
You call upon a higer power
For help and inspiration
Oh, I swoon
While loudspeakers play soft music
Leaning
Over your fourtieth masterpiece
You must have loved
The colour of these violins
I wish I knew you
Your fit of insanity makes me sad
I wish you knew
Your music was to stay forever
And I hope...
I have no clue
If you know how much it matters
And i hope...
Thank you good man
Thank you Arcturus 9. I've listened to that song so often I can hear Anneke in my head. So many goddesses, so little time.
About Mozart, I've just learned.
The last 4 minutes of this particular performance will forever be one of my favorites in the history of music.
Agree, although the total buildup is what makes the song so great! (and the last 4 minutes;)
Exactly..me too.
Mine too. Forever.

One of the best moments of my life
I wish she knew HER music was to stay forever
Anneke is in a class by herself. Absolutely stunning.
Nothing compares to Anneke...
I concur ❤
❤❤❤
Agree would have even be better without the others. Great energy in this song
@Jofelmenneke For August 2025, they're doing it again with Anneke only this time...
I'm going on Sunday 31 😎

This song has everything, emotion, composition, atmosphere, a great performance. One of the best songs ever released!
I totally agree, it still hits me everytime
And the best singer!
This song will stay forever

The bass playing on this song rises to the occasion. Its a perfect performance by everyone.

That is a brilliant piece of music.
anneke will always be the best female singer in metal
floor will not object but her fans will, and so may objective observers...

Unreal.
How To Measure A Planet was truly ahead of it’s time. Brilliant album!
That Album was my introduction to this band years ago. My friend Michael gave me a loan of it and i was instantly hooked.
One of the best songs ever written. The buildup is incredible.
Absolutely!!

I couldn't agree less. Epic!
wow... those last 2 minutes were something special. i don't know why but i almost cried
f that, the last 4 minutes are just indescribable. and i did cry lol
Took them a minute to get back in the groove during the song but halfway through it was like they never stopped playing together.
Annie has such a wonderful blend of power and softness.
That guitar single note build up at the end combined with Anneke's vocals is chilling to the bone. Perfect example of 'less = more'.
YEah, pure magic. Such committed guys in a perfect, unique lapse of time.

I was there. Magical evening!
Such a voice, such elegance when she moves, such everything! An angel to me...
a voice of an angel

I listened this song over and over when my brother died way to young. His music......
My condolences to you man. He'll live on in memory! Cherish the time you had with him.
❤️
Thanks you all!

John Carlson They’re virtually unknown in The Netherlands too. Best performance of the best song of the best band.

How is it that we have such a pantheon of Dutch goddesses? Anneke, Floor, Simone Simons, Diane van Giersberģen. What gifts to humanity.
There are only 2 sounds in the world that can put tears in my eyes when I witness them live: Anneke's voice and David Gilmour's lead guitar.
I'm so gutted that this concert went under my radar... I only found out shortly after.
Woah, any kind of mix between the Gathering and Pink Floyd sounds awesome to me!!!
so spot on! Same
1:50 sounds like the beginning of The Great Gig In The Sky ;)
What a combi that would be..👍
This song makes me cry my eyes out
Same..
Don’t be ashamed, even RUclips reactors and diehards cry online.

you're not the only one. I've been under Anneke's spell ever since the 90s.
Thanks… now google knows where to start the ad
Nobody would ever have any idea how much this song means to me. 💜
bilmiyoruz alev hanım ama bir şeyler ifade etmesi açısından ne güzel bir şarkı..
This is one of my favourite performances of anything ever.
I am literally travelled elsewhere listening to that piece of art
5:55 Onwards is Anneke on overdrive...pure chills...
You feel blessed as an audience when she's going all out, because she can't do that all the time. Makes you feel chosen.
Brilliant. Beautiful. Stunning performance. This is my favorite song. Their music was to stay forever.
This is my all time favourite song too.im not afraid to say it makes me cry

7:02 ... that part sends shivers down my spine. this whole song is a masterpiece without compare. The Gathering is perfect.

My shivers start at 5:55 and end a bit before 7:02 :P

She's better live than studio. This is a more mature Annie doing a wonderful rendition of this song, putting everything into it.
Top 5 Gathering Song for me!
In no order - On Most Surfaces, Great Ocean Road, Liberty Bell, Travel, and Saturnine
How could you leave out "Strange Machines?"
Anneke, your music has such great importance, in my world and in the world of many, thank you!

The added guitar lead build up to the end is amazing.
From 5:54 I cry a river every time.
You can drown in this song! Nostalgia... Favorite band!
Вершина творчества группы , просто нет слов...
Afgelopen jaar was extreem zwaar, dit heeft me mede geholpen erdoor te komen 🙏
I never get tired of this woman.
And after 20 years this song makes me cry
Amazing song. She is the only one can sing it and gives us all the emotions in the entire song. I love her.

Zo mooi te zien dat er nog steeds reacties komen, werkelijk een meesterwerk🙏
Het is en blijft een “Master Piece” en imo de beste Nederlandse song ever.
AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!
jesus what a song, and performance by Anneke.
Brilliant. No words to say...
i was lucky to be there for TG25. In my memories forever! LOVE TG
Annie just kills it, lovely lady with a sublime voice, all she wants is a normal life and to be happy with her hubby and kid, leave them alone :)
This "I whsh you knew" section... My god
The Gathering... what can i say that hasnt say before... just the best song.
I keep coming back to it. Brilliant.
one of the most beautiful songs ever. I saw them do this live about 6 times and the feelings I felt are undescribable. Fabulous

Dead right Daniel! I bought Mandylion in 94 and still love them now 25 years later especially Goddess Anneke!
I want to live in the second part of this song forever.
Nice.

Realmente esta canción me hace viajar, una interpretación increíble de Anneke, una banda increíble The Gathering!!
what a song !!!!! epic
holy shit, this is amazing...what a song and what emotion
And every time I think: “ Did I really miss my last chance to see Anneke perform with the Gathering?”
Was just thinking the same thing.
Listening to this when being high is an experience I tell you.
Speechless!!!!
Her voice is perfect. All of them are amazing musicians
