Whoever is responsible for ads appearing in the middle of this should be ashamed of themselves. The song is not that long. Put one at the beginning or end, fine, but to have one right in the middle to break up the big build-up of this masterpiece is a crime against humanity.
Man, this is so amazing. It's not just a performance, it's a trip. A trip through beautiful musical landscapes. The music itself is very powerful, but Anneke's voice is beyond belief.
Commerce? If most people liked metal, it would be the most played genre on radios. I would say it's the lack of education in music. People listen to total garbage simply because they don't know anything else. If they listen to that garbage long enough, they begin like it. Human brain likes familiarity. If you already know some music, you tend to like it. Most people don't even care what they are listening to, they just want some background noise while doing something.
I m 42, heard a billion of song in my life, mostly rock & different kind of metal, one of my fav was Saturnine (studio) and I heard this life version of Travel life one year ago. I think that I seriously heard it 250/300 Times since (roughly once per day) and I m already quite sure that this will be my Fav song for the rest of my life. I can t even described my feeling as it s a mix of pain, power, joice and sadness at the same time.
I love this performance so much. Anneke's voice has healing properties for our hurting world. I wish she knew how much her performances mean to me and how much it matters. And this band...just magical cohesion. They captured lightning in a bottle with this performance .
Heard this live in 2007 at Sibiu. I was waiting for the next band and this song came up. I was literally not prepared and it hit me like a bus. It was a trance, an extasy, something hard to describe but overly powerful almost to panic. Never a song hit me so hard and so deep. Her voice went to cosmic heights. I was not prepared..
It's hard for me to explain what this song does to me. A nostalgic woman who I don't know where she comes from, I always end up with my eyes full of tears, she couldn't understand why
When I listened to this piece more than 20 years ago, I passed it almost imperceptibly. Today, after so many years, when I accidentally came back to it, I can't stop listening to it. It crushes, even tears from the inside of emotions. It's an amazing feeling.
Years and years go by and I am listening to a lot of various music every day, among others The Gathering live at Paradiso, Amsterdam (2006) and the TG25 concert. I always highlight this gem. Always touched by the musicianship of the band and Anneke's voice that touches my soul.
In 2023 'Strange Machines' ended up in the all time top 2000 most popular songs of The Netherlands. In 2024 dutchies could honour this exceptional band and singer by voting another one of their exquisite tracks into that top 2000. I suggest y'all vote for 'Travel', from the then 25 yo brilliant album HtMaP. :)
Kijk, we hebben Anneke en Sharon en Floor en Irene en Simone en Marjolein en Monique en Ilse en we sturen Joost Klein naar het songfestival. Nou, dan luister ik nog maar een keer hier naar.
I have never heard this song once where tears didn't form in my eyes. It's absolutely hypnotic. I've seen concerts by Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica etc but my one regret is that I never got to see The Gathering live.
Y en pleno concierto te dan ganas de llorar , en 2007 los pude ver y fue algo que aún me da nostalgia, nostalgia de que fue mágico y el mejor concierto de toda mi vida.
There are only 2 sounds in the world that can put tears in my eyes when I witness them live: Anneke's voice and David Gilmour's lead guitar. I'm so gutted that this concert went under my radar... I only found out shortly after.
I don't think any performance has ever given me chills the way this one does from 4:30 onwards: up and down my back, down to my ankles, from the back of my head around to the front. Every single time. Phenomenal.
So stunning ! I cannot believe that The Gathering is virtually unknown in America . I found one of their songs on some college indie radio station. and I have been hooked ever since..
I’m American and just heard them for the first time a couple days ago. The live version of On Most Surfaces started playing on mix playlist. From the intro I thought it was it BRUTUS at first. Instantly fell in love and looked up more of their music. So sad I seem to have missed out on the hay day of this amazing band 😢
Years and years go by and this one is still my favourite piece of music ever written. It's like floating in space with your feet on the ground. I always cry, but tears of joy and gratitude for the music. :')
That is absolutely right. With this song you are in another dimension. I have seen the band with Anneke many years ago playing it on highest level. I am blown away
Another wonderful discovery for me. Anneke is beautiful and amazing. Thanks to the Areon project where she stood tall singing next to Floor Jansen in "Vally of The Queens".
I checked out some of her early live performances, and now I can see how she may have influenced Simone and Floor. Anneke moved like a flame on stage as she sang and watching her was a real thrill!
We're so lucky for this reunion. Better for me to have seen it on a screen instead of in real life because I would've probably died in a corner somewhere.
@@barsknos Mine too, while I am a fan of all vocalists of The Gathering throughout their career, this song is saturated by awesomeness before a choir comes in. There are two songs that I can't help but get excited when listening to them, one is Cantiga de la memoria rota by Inti Illimani and the other is Travel, especially this version, it is a song that without a doubt will be the one with which I would like to be said goodbye to this world on the day of my funeral
This was absolutely incredible. I think Anneke put so much power and emotion into this song. Her singing was stunning. The music was awesome, and, with the singing, it all built up into an immensely powerful finish. Watching it makes me emotional, that is how strong the performance is.

Melodic stanzas
Are symphonizing their way
Through your weary head
To feed your distrust
And fill it's mouth with the desire
To soulfully be one with your creation
Not a subject to control
You call upon a higer power
For help and inspiration
The crowd waits
And turns their faces
Towards you expectantly
You give them what they need
But their useless criticism
Makes you die
A bit more inside
Not a subject to control
You call upon a higer power
For help and inspiration
Oh, I swoon
While loudspeakers play soft music
Leaning
Over your fourtieth masterpiece
You must have loved
The colour of these violins
I wish I knew you
Your fit of insanity makes me sad
I wish you knew
Your music was to stay forever
And I hope...
I have no clue
If you know how much it matters
And i hope...
Thank you good man
Thank you Arcturus 9. I've listened to that song so often I can hear Anneke in my head. So many goddesses, so little time.
About Mozart, I've just learned.
Nothing compares to Anneke...

The last 4 minutes of this particular performance will forever be one of my favorites in the history of music.
Agree, although the total buildup is what makes the song so great! (and the last 4 minutes;)
Exactly..me too.

One of the best moments of my life

How To Measure A Planet was truly ahead of it’s time. Brilliant album!
That Album was my introduction to this band years ago. My friend Michael gave me a loan of it and i was instantly hooked.

Annie has such a wonderful blend of power and softness.
How is it that we have such a pantheon of Dutch goddesses? Anneke, Floor, Simone Simons, Diane van Giersberģen. What gifts to humanity.

In no order - On Most Surfaces, Great Ocean Road, Liberty Bell, Travel, and Saturnine
