    Chorus:
    I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
    Our love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone when the letter said
    A soldier's coming home

I was one of those 'Travelling soldiers' they sing about. I'll turn 70 in a couple of months and I've never been able to shake the memories of my time in Vietnam. These ladies are pure class and even though this song reduces me to tears, they give me a warm feeling in my heart. They sing like they feel my pain. God bless you and keep you safe.

I am a Vietnam Vet (Marine) and I love this song. I seen my share of killing but there is usually one that you can never get out of your mind. On April 23rd 1969, while on patrol, we were ambushed and a boy from Raleigh NC by the name of Willard Till was killed. You will find his name on the Vietnam virtual wall on the internet. His death was so unnecessary. It took me 20 years to find the nerve to locate his parents. I am from Michigan and a drove to NC to meet his parents in 1989. Tears flowed like a river. They had prayed for 20 years that God would send some one who was there when their son was killed, so they could know that he "came home" . They couldn't be at peace because the casket was closed, do to the condition of his body. It haunted them not knowing if he really died and that was his body in the casket. That night as we sat at the table, I told them, Willard never suffered. I heled put his body on the helicopter. We all went to see his grave the next day. I look his mother in the eyes and told her ' Francis, Willard is home" . Willard was 19 years old. Just a boy. This boy was 18.

It’s a pity they got so much flak in the early 2000s. You can tell from their songs they do support the troops, even if they don’t always support the decisions of the leadership of the troops. Hell, lots of us spoke out about it at the same time. There was a lot of doubt that what we were doing in Iraq was 100% right. (Which was later proven correct.)

I worked with a Vietnam Vet in a place called Whitehorse Yukon Canada. He was our chopper pilot on the Air Search and Rescue Crew. We called him Chief. This guy was amazing!! He put us anywhere we needed to be He said he flew with the 101st Air Cav in the states during Nam. He later transferred to a Medi-Vav division. I trusted him with my life on many occassions. He died on a mountain top saving others. Will never forget this man as I was one of the ones he saved.

Wow I have loved this song forever but this version was amazing. My father was drafted a week after I was born in May of 69. Ended up in fort Riley Kansas in the MP’s and thankfully never went overseas. My brother was born on the base in nov 70. My father recently passed away at the age of 72 from a Glioblastoma and I also just found out that he was at fort Gordon where they were testing agent orange and although my dad made it home back then he may still be a victim of that war. Thank you Dixie chicks for such a heart felt song

At LEAST that is the issue in my eyes. That said... I feel that they got exactly what they deserved (one opened her mouth but the others backed her). Loss of income and fame. Some of us grew up over there, some of us died over there. I was just 17 when I shipped out. Had a choice of prison or US Army. Still a young kid. Not knowing what war was all about. In my first 4 hours at base camp in An Khe I learned what war was, I learned that boys die and I learned just how much I missed my mother. I don't think that ANY of us FNG's that night didn't cry for mom. Before all was said and done, of the 11 of us who went through boot together and shipped out together, only 3 of us made it out alive. When I came home I was kicked, spit on, wore fresh eggs and called just about any name in the book. Ended up making a career out of the Army as a 68W Combat Medic. Have 30 years under my belt. I'm pretty damn proud of who I became and my rank. Made CSM. I've been to the wall now 3 times. It is humbling to say the least. Each time the tears flow. Each time I look at the names of the ones I knew that are now gone, but more importantly, I look at my brothers name, David Wayne Hildreth, from Warren NH. Funny thing about it all, David and I served together, and my Father and David's father served together in WW2 in Germany in the Ardennes Forest. David was my mentor, my rock, my brother......I also lost another brother at Khe Sahn, David Tewksbury. We grew up together, chased women together, drank together.....miss you guys.....
