when this song was released, i immediately became obsessed. now that the album is out, i always forget how good vortex is just because of how amazing the other tracks sound. if you liked the chaos of vortex, you'll like mediator. just like vortex, there's almost no room to breathe. it's a bit of a harder listen though - it took me a few listens before all the grooves started to come together in my head.

feel the same way....The first listens is like driving a car in the fog, and now and then the road turn so sharp that you drive of the road, you quick get back..and a min later the road turn sharp again....after a few listen you know the"Road" and you just groove along without getting thrown off
I love this song so much. You can see it live at the end of Hellfest A Home lockdown virtual festival uploaded by Arte Concert. There is a bit with a vocal backing track harmony "so traumatic" though and watching the fast transitions between growls and belting are soooo amazing. Lots of fun tracks on this album.
This is probably taking my song of the year, & I can't see anything else beating their "Wallflowers" album (from whence this comes) for my album of the year.
You're spot-on in zoning in on Vlad the drummer. He is a classically trained pianist to trade, & only swapped from (self-taught) guitar to (self-taught) drums in his previous band as he felt that would be easier than trying to convey his ideas for more interesting drumming to a new drummer!! o_O #AnnoyinglyTalented LOL Anyhoo, he composed upwards of 80% of the music for this new album, & I reckon his classical sensibilities show themselves in the form of distinct lack of standard verse-chorus-verse-bridge/breakdown-chorus formulae. Much more organic flow using 2 or 3 core "motifs" thru each song, which are then manipulated with varying dynamics, counterpoint, etc to create "movements" much more like what tends to be seen in classical composition.... & I'm *SO* here for it! #SuperRefreshing
p.s. check out some of his drum playthrough vids.... he does all of this live, & tight AF. Also worth your time imho would be Eugene's bass playthrough for this song. The slides giving a deep sense of flow, the casually fingernail-raked chordals giving an angry girth to the mix, the tasteful addition of some slap&pop where very few others would think to place it to keep the ear entertained.... it makes me want to pick up a 5-string for the first time ever in 30yrs of bass dabbling! #MasterClass ;)
"Teacher Teacher" and "Home Back" are favorites and the official videos are better than just "live" performances.
That’s a rarity with this band but true and would add Ape and I speak astronomy OMV’s as well

I'm pretty sure Vlad uses two snare drums, the hits at the beginning are on the 10" one, which does sound really tight indeed. Real musicianship at work, you can almost tell he was a classical pianist ;)

Honestly, I think Vlad's ability to replicate the complexity of the music he and the rest of the band composes jas to do with his background as a classically trained pianist.
I'm glad you mentioned the high positioning of the bass guitar. I couldn't stand and play mine that high. I need mine low, like Steve Harris or Peter Steele low. Hooray for having long arms!

I'd suggest to see them live, as they are perfect there as well. Both the atomic clock played drums parts and recorded vocal harmonies are there. All that Jinjer stuff is the most incredible music thing I saw in my life. And I am a metal fan from the times before it all begin))) Not to say they are from Ukraine!

They were proggy before Vlad joined them on drums. Check out I Speak Astronomy - the main riff at the beginning is 6/8, 7/8, 6/8.
Mediator is a great tune from them too..
I recommend their live performances. They do not improvise. Vlad, the drummer who joined in 2016, is trained on classical piano, self-taught on guitar, which is his main songwriting tool and is self-taught on drums. Since 2018 or so, he also became one of the main songwriters. The main reason they never improvise is that they always have a click in their ear pieces with backing tracks running in real time during their performances. Hence, it is more like Classical music with strictly-adhered to written parts for each member. Tatiana, Roman, the guitarist, and Eugene, the bassist, are all self taught. Amazing.

Great review Steve, I really enjoyed it. This is one of my favorite songs off the new album. That's one of the things that always amaze me with their songs is you are never sure quite where it's going but it's always a great journey. I'm still hoping you'll do Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev.

The higher bass lets you have a more natural/comfortable hand position at the extreme ends of the neck
Unfortunately, they found themselves one man short in the middle of the US tour: Vlad tested positive for Covid-19 and had to be quarantined. The rest of the band all tested negative but they were put under constant vigilance. Fortunately for them, he had recorded drum tracks that they used for practice and now they're playing live with those drum tracks. Because the show must go on.
I'm sincerely praying that Tatiana doesn't get infected too because it could potentially end her career. : (
She gets really low in "Home Back", as well as "Pit of Conciousness- Live in Kiev", and "Who is gonna be the one- live"

It should be noted, the drummer, Vlad, is not a drummer. He's a classically trained pianist. Memorizing his drums is probably like memorizing Bach.

I think you'd appreciate Wallflower, especially if you like bluesy metal. Mediator might be a bit much just yet... it even took _me_ with dozens of listens to their entire discography, a good ten listens plus some lyrics studying, to go from feeling kinda "...eh..." about Mediator, to really liking it now. Though if you like punk and ska influences in your super-heavy metal, you might dig it.

Don't filet me, but I've watched the Vortex video many times and only now noticed that the "boss" monster at the end is made up of all the junk sucked into the vortex. I guess I was too focused on the music and her deep growls.

Their new album is solid, though I feel like the three singles (including this one) are the standouts. The other songs kind of blended together for me.

WHY have you not listened to Teacher, Teacher! yet?! Listen to the studio version, though. The live versions are good, but not on par with the properly produced product.

Vlad wasn't even a drummer until his old band couldn't find what they wanted. He did a Thanos "Fine...I'll do it myself" and then he melted everyone's faces off. He also plays classical piano, guitar, and I've seen him play an upright bass once on Instagram.
I've watched a lot of live Jinjer and he is always on point. I've noticed that he does occasionally make changes to drum parts, but he usually sticks with the change. He's not just improvising. I'm not a drummer, but after you listen to this song 100 times you can pretty much catch the gist of it so I'm sure he plays it note for note live. At least it sounds like it to me.
The dude is a musical monster and wrote most of the music for the latest album.
