    Weather not as predicted....where have I head that before, the forecasts drive me mad, so unreliable. Fair enough, the day looked great and the scenery stunning and I loved the skies as you got towards the top of Camaderry and what a superb shot when you hit the summit! What a great place to pitch your new tent and just as well you did not have Mrs Metalman in that tent with you, where spiders are concerned - she is a screamer!! Looked a rough night for you but seeing those wild deer and having a nice breakfast off the tops must have raised the spirits no end. Good test for the new tent and must have given you confidence for the future and loved the bloopers, I hate a perfect video because in real life, it never happens, cheers Alan

      Hi Alan - yep, a good test for the new tent! Took me a while to recover from no sleep - ear plugs packed in one of my dry bags should that happen again! It’s a beautiful place for sure Alan and great that I had such nice weather for most of the first day 😉 You can assure Mrs Metalman that the spider only made it as far as the porch 😂 Weather predictions seem as much of a dark art to me as pensions….hope all is well with you!!

      Hi Sam - so much beauty around this area, it never occurred to me to make a video of it before, I think my approach up to then was making videos of places I’d never been before. It was unfortunate I couldn’t fly the drone more from the area I’d camped (due to the wind) as I’ve always liked those views of mountains after mountains! Babbling in the tent was a new one for me too, not something I’d like to do again in fairness 😉 Very nice to hear you enjoyed it, thanks!!

Ahh the Akto , I had one in green sold it last March then missed it last winter so bought another this time in sand 😂😂 love them or hate them I always felt safe on a wild night and that’s what I missed. Windy nights are not good for sleep lol . I loved the stunning landscape on your return following the river along. Tfs atb Dave ⛺️👍

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 года назад

      Cheers Dave!! What a new experience for me - no more flexing poles as the wind rages. I bought the Access 2 for last winter, I’m still going to keep it as I love it’s space and the less mesh inner for the winter - but the flexing poles are a nightmare in strong windy conditions 😉 I went with the sand Akto too 😂 Ah I’ve experienced some of the Akto’s quirks at this stage but that pole not budging is incredible!! It has given me a whole new perspective on the joy of being in a tent while nature rages and the power of your shelter holding strong. Lying in the middle of that tension and feeling safe..wow! Me and the Akto are still getting to know each other but we’re doing ok for now!! Great that you have another one again for those crazy nights when nature kicks off! 🎉 Yeah it’s a beautiful spot Dave - less than an hour from Dublin and it was about time I brought the camera out to play there! This was a very good effort. Congratulations. You had a plan for collapsing the akto but a peg came loose - so things flapping in all directions with lots of noise. Your attitude seamed strong and mentally prepared to me. I feel your last brief words had it 'i had no sleep last night but I certainly feel a live'. However I myself no longer enjoy the bang of the gust strike all night and bracing the wall for fear of a tent pole collapsing... thx for posting v nicely told.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 года назад +1

      Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed it! Yes, like you I’ve spent too many nights holding a tent pole as it flexed on top of me. I’ve had the Akto out on 2 windy occasions now and it’s such a different experience for the pole not to move. The sense of security and safety that comes from that is hard to describe - the power of nature raging and the power of a shelter holding strong against it and then lying in the middle of that tension. I’m not going to be chasing storms - but I just love being in a tent and being in a strong tent has provided me with a new appreciation and depth to my love of camping 😊 It’s not indestructible, it has its limitations but it can handle so much more than my other tents could. Hopefully I’ll remember my earplugs the next time though 😉 Thanks again!

      @@MiriamKennedy I feel many of the Uk and Ireland hill walking community will relate to these comments. I believe at least for myself now there is a fundamental difference between the two scenarios. Respectfully.

      @@MiriamKennedy understood. My vagueness on this point was about how to admit that I have done a little chasing and once created at the very least difficulty for others because five Scotland mountain rescuers had to be pulled out of bed to pull me out of my tent and safely down. The vagueness was how to admit the long standing regret I have for that misjudgement without appearing that I think it is acceptable or a point of braggadocio. I was ready for the conditions but I missjudged - I was not ready for the duration - trusting the clearing forecast. An important lesson learnt. My piece spoken.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 года назад +1

      @@justmyopiniontoday7548 thanks for your honesty and for the reminder how things can be! We certainly face ourselves out there but I suppose we face ourselves in the comfort of our own homes too - not sure if any is easier. You learned your lesson and hopefully aren’t too hard on yourself. I could be faced with a similar situation at any stage so your experience is a reminder that I need to hear. I had a tent pole snap on me during the Summer in what were forecasted as benign conditions but I was pitched in a totally wrong orientation for the winds that arrived. Thankfully it wasn’t November on a rainy, cold night and I was able to wait it out in a collapsed tent until the morning light came. That experience prompted me to get a stronger tent though. I still have my other 3 tents (trying to get the pole on the broken one fixed or replaced - trying my luck on a warranty). They all have a purpose but I know their limitations at this stage 🤦‍♀️ None of them can handle strong winds - 2 X MSR’s and a Sea to Summit tent. I still love them all though 🫣

    Recently got a 2nd Akto along with a 10mm pole and a 2nd 9mm. double poling it with two 9mm poles makes it rock solid. Double pole'ing an akto is not a problem as only 2 poles, but anything more like my anjan 2,needng 4 poles is too much hassle. The other solo tent option, the Soulo which everyone and their granny has , looks vulnerable to side winds having a near vertical side and asmaller porch which would make me concerned when cooking.
    The previous akto was in some serious weather including a storm with 90mph forecast winds, eventually getting destroyed when somebody I leant it to put it in a washing machine, it came out smelling of flowers with all it's waterproofing gone.
    After having a 3 season tent wiped out in an 80mph forecast storm, went for hillebergs, buying 7 of them, from the Akto to Tarra.

    Hey Miriam, so lovely to see another one of your wonderful films. So long overdue, in my humble opinion.
    Strangely it didn't pop up on my thread, so it had probably been up a week or so before I became aware of it. What a lovely treat, especially because I wasnt expecting it..a bit like finding a tenner!
    Really enjoyed the little out takes at the end. So sorry, and please forgive me, but I laughed out so loud when you dropped the bottle top, and then ended up with it, in the water yourself.
    But fair play to you, for having some fun and not taking yourself too seriously. Was funny though!
    Sorry you didnt get to sleep on the night, but hey, these things happen; and probably will again. Half the fun of camping eh?
    Loved the, haven't slept..but feel alive! Doesn't that just sum up the whole camping "thing" up? Unless you've never experienced that for yourself; there's just no way to verbally explain it.
    Like your new tent. It's really nice, though not quite as spacious..or should I say, palatial..haha..as the hubba hubba.
    You mentioned several times how strong the tent is, and how secure you felt in it. I almost called out..Miriam, Nooooo!
    Until you were up, walking the next day, I could breath a sigh of relief, and un-crossed my fingers; as I thought you'd tempted fate! Phew, but it all turned out ok.
    Do you have any more tips planned for the near future; for us all to look forward to?
    So very glad you shared this adventure with us Miriam, thankyou!
    Take good care of yourself
    Tim 😊

      Ah cheers Tim! What a lovely message to receive and read 🤗 Glad you had a good giggle at my little trip 😂😂 All part of the adventure 🤭 My other tents - palatial as they are would have struggled a lot that night, it’s such a new experience for me to feel so confident in a tent with the weather doing a hoolie outside. I’m used to poles flexing a lot in strong winds and having to use my hands to push the pole back up but not in this tent…obviously it has its limitations, but it does very well for the kind of conditions I might likely come across 🤞 You’re right though - I could have been eating my words!! Great that you had that ‘finding a tenner’ feeling 😂😂 Yeah RUclips seems to act up like that sometimes, don’t know what causes it. The words ‘Hilleberg Akto’ in the title definitely increased the views on this one - if it had said just something about Glendalough and Camaderry, a new audience wouldn’t have clicked it….funny to see how that works! As far as future plans - the battle continues!! I had planned to video a hiking trip in Donegal but I want decent weather to show it off - I could be waiting a long time to get 2 decent days weather up there! There is another hike I’ve thought of now videoing in Wicklow which is a route I’m very familiar with but now have thought why not do a video of it. I’ve also thought of a few cycles too that I could video. But…I still go through the same ‘shite’ as I usually do in not feeling totally ok with it. Then one day like it was for this video - I literally can feel compelled to make a video, there is no resistance and I won’t even be bothered by weather either! I’ll be as surprised as you when that happens 🤷‍♀️😂 Cheers again for your message!!

      Hi Sam! Congrats on your new purchase 🤗 Hopefully you won’t be disappointed - I’m very impressed with mine. Yes the inner is flappy in high winds but the flatter the pitch is - definitely helps the flappy-ness. I didn’t have ear plugs with me that night but I won’t forget them again!! The pole is so strong - I bought a 10mm pole to use instead of the 9mm pole provided but I’m sure the 9mm pole is going to be really sturdy too! I hope you enjoy yours 🤞 Delighted you enjoyed the video and the lovely Glendalough 😎 Cheers for your support!!

      @@sam.midford I have a Hubba Hubba and Access 2 Sam - they both have served me very well and I will still use them as I appreciate the great space they offer! Thankfully both tents have survived to date and I have the Hubba Hubba about 7 years with lots of 3 season summit camps and then I just got the Access 2 last winter. The poles flex a lot in high winds, the poles mightn’t break but I was constantly grabbing the pole and pushing it back up when winds were strong. With the Akto I’ve none of that - it feels so much stronger. I still love my MSR tents though and will continue to use them but when there is a chance of high winds in colder weather, the Akto will be with me 😉 I need to cross the water too and spend some time over there!!

    I loved this film, things don’t always go to plan, as you said, and so many people just want to show the perfect trip or adventure, it’s not realistic.
    I was so happy the new tent worked out for you, nothing like setting up on top of a wind swept mountain to give it a good test, holy.
    Just back from a week on the road, I didn’t film anything and just tried to stay in the moment and soak it all in. -2c at night but my little heater kept my tent toasty warm, a real game changer for late fall and early spring adventures. I too struggled with unbelievable wind last week, adding hours to my rides everyday. Had a chance to meet up with my youngest for a night too, so it was amazing, although leaving him proved to be tougher than I thought and I struggled that day missing him :)

I don’t edit out any swearing and anyone who knows me would tell you I swear quite a bit I’d say 🫣 The camera definitely creates another filter - I can be a bit more relaxed with it at times but a camera performance is hard to escape. I consider myself quite an introvert, so performing with a camera does not feel natural to me when out on my own like this. That being said - I didn’t have too much cause to be swearing possibly 😊 Cheers for your message John and glad you enjoyed it!!

    What a suspenseful video Miriam, couldn’t stop wondering if you were gonna make it through the night! • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 года назад +1

      That was funny to read Gary!! I had no idea anyone might have a reaction like that 😊 The Akto did very well - definitely not bombproof but it can handle quite a bit for it’s weight..I’m getting better at pitching it with every trip but having a flat surface is more important for this tent than my others. The inner is very flappy in high winds especially when you’re not perfectly pitched so I’ll need to get some comfy ear plugs incase I find myself in windy conditions again! Food outdoors still always appeals 🤗 Cheers for watching and your message Gary - hope all is well with you 👍

      The drone definitely is a game changer for my little videos 👍 Thanks for the compliment on my delivery too - I think I’ll always feel a bit stupid doing it but I have a bit of fun too! Aw Miriam I loved this film! yeh a wild night omg no sleep. But you got loads of gorgeous shots and captured the whole experience so well - the shots of you high up on the fells with setting sun behind you were fantastic, and I loved the shot of the flowers on the bank and you striding over the stream. Watched together with my husband and we thought those lovely craggy sunlit woodlands and then big fells were super beautiful in good and bad weather, and actually quite like bits of Sweden, where he's from. And the curry dinner sounded brilliant, and when you said you were having pudding too, I thought oh good - choc swiss roll and then dig biscs after, great 😋. What you said at the end, no sleep but I feel alive, was so great. Yay, so glad that you did film it! and you put it together so beautifully x best wishes from here in London! 👋🥰

I obviously couldn't film any more than I did but I was chuffed there was enough decent content to show the place off. I'd love a Hilleberg Akto, they have been around for many years and a good strong fabric too. You'll be safe from the bad weather in one of those but you might have got a better nights sleep if you had pitched a little lower down where it was more sheltered:)
