I feel like this has been happening a lot lately. I actively go out of my way to find new/upcoming titles but there’s always a few titles that pop up on my radar out of nowhere right before they’re released or after the fact.
I had the strangest experience today.. I was thinking about Sea of Stars for some reason, but then in doing so it started me thinking of Kickstarter JRPG's. I then randomly remembered that the spiritual successor to Suikoden, Eiyuden Chronicles, was a thing. I hadn't thought about it in so long I figured I would search it on RUclips to see if there was anything new about the game so then I find out this prequel game (which I also had forgotten about lol) literally released today! And here I am now.
"Fetch quests are a difficult grind." .... WHAT?! 90% of them are already done when you get them if you explored even a tiny bit. Aside from the ones that spawn quest only mobs, I rarely ever had to go "grind" anything. Even those quests only took a minute or two to complete.
I feel you - the flash style animations where they have 2d skeletons and fix them to "morphing" sprites might be way easier to make, allow for sharper visuals and even enable some moves hard to do with pure pixel animation, it just always looks like a mobile game to me (unless you are VanillaWare or Artisan Studios, where they have pixel animations ontop of the "flash" style animations and cleverly cover up the "mobile" feel that way). Take CJ for example (i love her character design) - in order to have her peepoRun they swap the chest sprite for left vs. right depending on the arm position, they should've done more of that for all characters to get somewhere near a VanillaWare level. But the game looks fun, i'm a sucker for fetch quests, just anything that lets me enjoy exploration and good mechanics.
hey guyz, the game looks quite good. I think I will purchase this one. 12 pounds is a good price. thanks for the review guyz, this is what I was waiting for before my final decision.
When I heard ofnthe Suikoden successor a few months ago... I was instantly interested. Watching this in action and hearing the SwitchUp verdict... I'm downloading it now lol
This one is nothing like Suikoden. Its a short (12 hour) hack n' slash game with minimal RPG elements. Gameplay-wise it has nothing to do with Hundred Heroes despite supposedly being a prologue for that game.
It’s out?! I been looking forward to this and the next game. Gonna go buy on Xbox or PlayStation. I love Suikoden. Excited for the main game more and think they’ll figure it out by then and use feedback from this edit: oh well since its on gamepass ill play there but buy on switch to support it
Yeah this is literally almost perfect for the last 4 hours - they took too long to give youu everything you needed and tried filling it with those side quests. I still enjoyed this though for that price - not too shabby at all! Mark
I'll pick this up most likely because I'm super excited for that sequel coming out. It looks beautiful but I do completely agree, that weird skeletal movement just feels cheap to me.
@@Hamox I personally would always rather the dockable switch but if you wont use that - crack on! I also think a Switch Lite OLED will drop before long
I love fetch quests that actually matter! ANOTHER WONDERFUL GAME! ahem sorry. Anyway this game is also gorgeous, I know everyone always says that. But it is though, also theres a grumpy kangaroo and did you see he actually jumps? They designed his movement realistically! Realistically for an anthropomorphic fantasy character, I mean. I want this grumpy kangaroo adventure, I mean game SO MUCH.
Great review as usual.Anything remotely related to Suikoden I'm all for as they were some of my favourite games back in the day. I will wait for a slight price drop as my backlog at the moment is crazy!
I've been waiting for this one, ever since xbox had that showcase almost 2 years ago I've been hyped for this game and the sequel. And honestly I'm fine with some repetition to give me some time with it. I'm jumping between my extremely modded Skyrim, Trek to Yomi, and now this. Can we all agree that it's a crime that Trek to Yomi isnt on the switch? It really seems like it would be the perfect platform, I would love to have that game on the go
Trying to decide if it's worth my time to play this one on Game Pass. Enjoyed the review, and the answer is...maybe? It's short enough that I might, and if the quests tend to be things that happen while you play anyway, then I'd consider it. I don't know that I'm interested in the follow-up game next year, so I wouldn't be playing for the long-term story aspects.
I really hope the RPG sequel to this comes to the switch. The Suikoden series (let's pretend 4 didn't happen) is one of the best series to grace the genre. 1 and 2 are a standout specifically.
@@damonke79 Characters suck, story is lame, battle system changed for the worse, sailing is tedious, encounter rate is ridiculous, many elements that make a game a "Suikoden" were removed, etc...etc...
This games gameplay gave me some strong Sword Art Online Memory Defrag vibes, and, as toxic as that games fanbase was, I love that game play style. Thanks for this review. I ended up picking this up for $3 on sale :)
hey guys. I saw the link for the NYXI controller and a few comments about it. I didn't see a link for a proper review. if you've done one. I just wanna make sure they feel like a quality control. lots of 3rd party stuff may look cool, but feel like a toy once you get it. any feedback from anyone that has then will be appreciated.
Fetch quests inevitably always remind me of that one Penny Arcade strip making fun of them, where you are requested to collect X "bear asses". I don't know why that has stuck in my brain for years, but it has.
Could be a good, what I call, mixed screen game where you can watch a vid and play the game at the same time… best spin I can put for too many fetch quests which are a tiresome aspect of my fav genre, RPGs. Irl is just a big series of fetch quests, hence it can be tiring in games hahah.
Honestly looks really good. I couldn’t believe it’s only £12 I would have bet £20 and I wouldn’t have paid that. £12 is tempting. I will finish something and then purchase it :)
I see now why they weren't keen to show off gameplay before release.. id love to like this, just not my cuppa tea. Thanks for another quality review, catch ya next time!
I wasn't gonna get this at first. I backed the hundred heroes kickstarter and I really look forward to that game. This however, felt more like a money laundering scheme to convert the backer money into revenue. I might be wrong but it just felt that way. However, I had enough gold points on my account to cover this so I just bought it anyway. Suikoden being my favourite franchise of all time it was inevitable I suppose.
Off subject here could anyone recommend a good 512gb micro sd card aside from the licensed one I have a 256gb but because of switch ups sales videos I have no room.

for action RPGS there are probably 4 types of quests : Fetch, Kill target, save target, discover location. you can't fault one for having fetch quests, voice acting? Overrated, too long. Reading is faster
I'm really concerned about this game. Another Review mentioned how slow it was for the first 5 hours or so. Then around the 8 hour mark it just clicked. That was because of the side "fetch" quest. Is it true that the weapon upgrades are tied to the side quests?
I keep repeating the intro. To clarify, is EC: Hundred Chronicles is a direct sequel to Suikoden? So it's after Suikoden 3 then? Or a spiritual successor kind of thing?
I was really psyched about Eiyuden Chronicles when the Kickstarter went up, but I was let down when there was wishy-washiness on if it'd come to Switch. I'm not sure if that's changed since then or not. We've certainly gotten a lot of "impossible ports" in the last year or so. I do enjoy a good story and don't mind fetch quests if they're sensible and contribute to the narrative. I'm not crazy about how low budget the character animation and movement looks though. Reminds me of Flash games and some mobile games I see ads on RUclips for, honestly. I'll probably wishlist this game, hold tight for a good discount, and cross my fingers that 100 Heroes does see a Switch release eventually.
Honestly I'm still on the fence with the game. Maybe I'll pick it up but there's just do much right now out and coming out. I guess I'm also not a big fan of the 2d action rpg of the game.
Played this game yesterday and agree with you about the quests but don’t agree about the combat, gets boring quick and isn’t that hard. After 8 hours of playing haven’t even got close of getting beat once by any monsters or bosses. Maybe this game is gear more for kid’s then adults.
Its just not for me. If I do decide to try it, then it will be via Game Pass since its free. I doubt I will find the time with all the other games I have to play that are just so much better than this one in my opinion.
The fact that they probably used some of the Kickstarter money meant for Hundred Heroes to make this pointless hack n' slash pisses me off. It wasn't part of the fundraising campaign, nobody asked for it and it took development resources away from the main game. There is also the glaringly obvious fact that releasing a 12 hour hack n' slash is an extremely poor way to market a 60 hour turn based rpg.
Ah. Typical game journalist style opening: "The name of a series that has many fans and is easily researched on a single video talking about the subject from any fan of the series, and the mere concept that a prequel comes before a sequel..... how confusing! Gee! How do you people keep your heads from spinning when faced with such CONFUSING and BAFFLING ideas?!" I swear to god, there should be a test that game journalists have to pass before they get this job. Like "what is the complete alphabet" and "how many fingers am I holding up?". At least those would make for a pretty hard entry bar, it seems.
Eiyuden Chronicles Hundred Heroes should be on Nintendo Switch too. Some AAA games run smooth on switch and hundred heroes 2D rpg game can't? Wow just wow
