Game developers are tired of developing a Switch version of the game in a decent way!
I have a very large collection of physical Switch games and I will skip this one for sure, cause I will not be paying for a bad broken port/version of this game! 😤
I’m also so frustrated with a lot physical releases on Nintendo Switch (but also other platforms), that are released in a broken, buggy mess and even with just a part of the game on the gamecard (or disc). What the fuck is up with that?!😕
Just stop with releasing these money grabbing lazy ass ports and put some more time and effort into it! Delay it for year if that is necessary, but this is getting way out of hand for way too long!

This is what I was worried about, even in the kickstarter they were on the fence for a switch version, they were targetting next gen nintendo.. hope patches can fix the bugs and performance
thankfully I have other systems to play it on, but honestly while i like the visuals I can never understand how games that looks like this cause the switch so much troubles.
"targeting next gen". For a 2D-HD game. We are all screwed if devs can't work 2D games with current gen. This is a gourmetized PS1 game ffs.

I'll wait for the patch to buy the Switch version. This is a game that just looks like it belongs on the Switch. The bugs can be ironed out. I'm a big fan of the Suikoden series. We have to support the devs if we want them to keep making games like these.

When Tales of Symphonia came out for the Switch, I waited an entire year to play it. It was well worth the wait. Pretty much all issues were fixed with patches (except for 1 crash in over 100 hours), and I'm happy to say it was a 10/10 experience for me.
I'll do the same with Eiyuden. This definitely looks like something I'll definitely enjoy, I'll just wait until they patch up most of the problems.

@@walterestorion9846 Yes, Symphonia had two or three major patches that fixed most of the problems. I won’t say all problems as the game did crash for me. But save often and you should be fine.

What I love about this channel is even if a game is subpar at launch it can certainly become decent when a patch fixes problems and you guys do a great job of letting people know when that is. An interesting thought for a video series is having games that have improved via patch showing adjusted review scores. Would love to see what this game would get with the crashes and frame rate issues taken care of.
Thx for the heads up. I've yet to play one of the other Eiyudens in my back log, so I'm not in a rush to get this one. Looking forward to seeing a performance patch drop before I revisit! 😊

I don’t like paying full price when a game is pushed to release and it’s not in a fluide state to be played without major issues. A wake up call to devs I say like back in the day, test you sh*t first properly😂
Thanks. I saw this and felt it could be in the same vibe of Octopath traveler or Unicorn Overlord and thought about just buying it on the Switch. Now after seeing the review I will wait for a patched up fix before adding another to my backlog.
RPG is life. This kind of reminds me of the game Riviera:The Promised Land. It's just an overworld version of it.

I know you do switch reviews but I was thinking of getting this on Xbox s/x. If it is exactly the same on Xbox except the performance is at where it should be ie. good frame rates, no graphics issues or drops.. basically any problems a more powerful platform may be able to improve on, what would you give for an over all value grade? Just wondering because if it’s a really good game hindered by technical issues or is the game not that fun to begin with? Thanks great vid!

Thanks as always for a prompt review! I've been looking forward to this one. As a fan of the first two Suikoden games, I love everything about this from a visuals, gameplay and audio standpoint. The dodgy performance bothers me much less than the crashing does. I can forgive a frame rate hiccup here and there in a game with turn-based combat, it would be more of a problem in something more action oriented. The crashes though, nope, no good in a game like an RPG where you make a big time investment. I have the physical preordered which isn't coming until mid-May, so hopefully the developers can resolve some of the shenanigans by then.
Appreciate creators being real about this. Obviously tons of us were hyped, but just like Dragon’s Dogma 2: we can’t be blinded by our love for the original, and deserve to expect a more stable release that doesn’t feel so dated.

One to add to the wishlist and wait for some performance boosts before biting the bullet then. The auto combat sounds very interesting, I like the idea of planning the priority moves & targets without having to do it in every battle. And thank you for identifying the timer on the random battles, I am in the same camp, they're irritating but I can deal with them if I know what triggers them.
I want to address my former comment: I have now bought the game, as with some credit I had left and my gold points, plus the fact it's now on a 20% sale, means I only had to pay an additional £22. I trust the devs to improve the performance, but for the price I've paid it's not so much of a worrying prospect.

I kickstarted this and from the reviews I've been watching, I think I'll stick with it on Steam Deck (the Switch physical is delayed and I hope long enough to get patches). I was really hoping for this to be a good Switch title.
From a dev stand point it makes sense for enemy models to look more detailed because they only have a few stock animations.
But the sprite based characters have a variety of movements and animations to go through and sprite based animation can be way more time consuming and costly than 3D models. Hence you save some work and time with a more streamline simplified design.
Is it possible to change the onscreen character? To walk around as other character?

The sound of Nanami's nunchuck sound effect is drilled in my brain from trying to find all the damned squirrels in Suikoden II
As a newcomer to this series, I was pretty hyped. Hearing about all the issues lessens my excitement.

Sadly, this is the tipping point between my love of owning a physical switch release (that apparently is delayed)... And having quality performance expectations. Especially from a game that is designed to be a throwback to an era the switch should be more than capable of handling. It's the reason why I bought Star Ocean second story R on my PlayStation 5. And I really wanted to have the switch version. But when you start to notice the lag between battles in a game that is very repetitious in that regard... That little bump in performance makes the difference IMO. And that's a shame since games like super Mario RPG on the switch run crazy good
Agreed. The switch is capable of more than this. Look at sea of stars! 60 fps and snappy loading. Even octopath 2 and bravely default 2 though not perfect and 30 fps run far smoother and faster than this on switch.

@@rokmare agreed. I was presently surprised with its performance. Not ps5 level with 60fps and whatnot but a consistent 30 it felt and pretty fast load times too.
It's kinda weird that some here was not able to get the import save from Rising to Hundred Heroes. Mine was able to read it after I selected a New Game and successfully imported my saves from Rising. I think you need to complete the story mode in Rising for the HH to read it.
Did you test this on the other consoles? Do the frame issues carry over?
The loading when you enter the battle still exist in ps5, but more quick. Say like this, in ps5 you need 3 second but in switch 6 second
so just play on pc or wait 3 months for it to be as good as the pc version?
I'm wondering if I should switch mine out for ps5 but also wanna stick it out in a way.. I mean it may be as simple as a patch or whatever.. Besides I already have the prequel on this platform and have great memories of playing Suikoden on a portable..

Dang. When I played the backer demo on PC, my initial reaction was "This looks like it'll run fine on Switch." Kinda surprised by the performance issues. Here's hoping they can get that smoothed out for the Switch players.
This reminded me of Chrono Trigger on the PlayStation where the menus had loading times.
This is one to keep an eye out for an upcoming All Patched Up video. Fingers crossed the devs decide to fix the Switch version.

I played hard from the beginning. Did load the rising demo save file. Might be that's why i could.
Careful wiht the PC version too, the encounter rate is linked to the refresh rate of the monitor, anything over60hz will give you no encounters whatsoever. Theres also weird localisation translation. Game is good but a lot of bugs were signaled to the dev during the beta and they fixed nothing and responded to nothing. My guess is they ran
Excuse my ignorance about this, but if the game is patched later, will this also fix bugs for the physical version, or are you "stuck" with a buggy version of the game if you buy the physical copy? I try to buy physical games when the gig size is large, as it is in this case (24GB... whew!) Should I ignore the physical version completely in this case?
I hope they will be able to fix the performance issues. Seems interesting but the load times would drive me crazy

I think the patch will be released today (April 23) (?) on the actual launch day so I hope the glaring issues could be fixed. Because it is a bummer for the Switch-only players who have purchased this game or backed this up.
That being said, aside from the performance issue, I am loving the game so far ❤. A true nod to what old school Suikoden was.

Crashes remind me of Overlord escape from Nazerick. That also crashed often and it still does to this day. There were patches but it never fixed those crashes. Imagine playing a metroidvania and your game crash at any second and your save points can be as long as 20-40 minutes apart (unless you know what to do already for speedrunning).
Hell imagine speed running and your run just stops because the game crashed.
Yeah my copy arrives today but I'll hold out for now. I'm hoping I'd see this in your All Patched Up series soon. I don't mind fps drops, but crashes after after a long stretch? Hell no!

I bought a new OLED switch game for this. I honestly hope the bugs and performance improve eventually.
Other thing that I'd rant about would be the travesty of localization once more. They never realize the minor changes can affect a character's identity greatly.

Did you just say Motoi Sakaruba was one of the composers for the soundtrack for this game? He is a legend in the retrogaming community especially when he was with WolfTeam who made games for the Japanese home computer Sharp X68000 and the Mega Drive as he composed most of the soundtracks for the majority of their games such as Sol Deace and Feace for the Mega Drive and Mega CD as well as El Viento and Earnest Evans.

(Your issue with crashes reminded me of my experience on Legend of Heroes III way back when. Actually had the option to save before/after changing maps so it was less frustrating, but nevertheless was not fun losing progress whenever I forgot to save then crashed).
Strangely, they tied the frame rate to the enemy spawn rate. This is one of the causes for the frame timing issues. I'm not sure how they can fix that at this point, but it's unfortunate.

I really hope they patch this up, I would love to see an all patched up episode with it featured. I passed on the kickstarter but had high expectations for this game, I have been looking forward to it all year. I guess for now it is a matter of waiting to see if they fix it and back to playing Second Story R.
Thank you guys for the great review and warning. There is no excuse for these companies to release games in this state. If i have to wait for months or years for a game to be fixed then that is a company that doesn’t deserve support at any point.

Im kinda glad i opted for the ps5 version. It baffles me how developers have such a hard time optimizing some of these games for Switch. They aren't even that graphically demanding. Bloodstained is another game that comes to mind.
I foresee this being in an all patched up episode down the line. It’s almost a good thing that the physical for this is delayed for switch, once this has a few patches I will grab it for sure.

So disappointed but also relieved there wasn't an option to buy the game before release on switch. Because I would've definitely done that. Now I'm kind of wondering if I should get a Steam deck or Rog Ally, to play the PC version... Obviously, I wouldn't just get it for this one game but from what I saw online, I think chances are it would run better on there.

Doesn't look too bad as long as crashing isn't an issue (TOO MUCH, Funny enough the Crashing of games back on the PS1 and PS2 era made me PARANOID enough to save every chance I get even in the BETTER age and playing games that RARELY crashed! So as long as it's not "Crash-a-mania" I can deal) but my rule about refusing to pay "100% game" price to a "broken game" comes into play here! Meaning I'm waiting for a sale (just finishing a game I was TRYING to complete my LONG DELAYED 100% Fire Emblem Three Houses after I started it FOOLISHLY when Unicorn Overlord came out so had to backburner it despite buying it on release! So I can FINALLY get to that game at last and a few others, so I CAN wait for a decent sale, that Crash you mentioned REALLY means I'll be waiting for a update AND a VERY decent sale (nothing short of $20-$30 will make me EVEN consider getting this digital, or if the Physical SOMEHOW end up at that price range! I will not consider anything HIGHER then that Range, as if I have to get UPDATES to make the game work properly, then that means if I ever uninstall in the case of Physical, then if I ever reinstall and can't get those updates, then I'm stuck with a FANCY PAPERWEIGHT! So no dice! Hell I got Pillars of Eternity on my Switch Oled and waited for an UBER sale before getting it because of KNOWING WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PORT! Trusted source for Switch game reviews (because you get idiots who can't let their bias to Nintendo go that their "Reviews" feel like advertisement to "why are you playing the switch, play PC/PS5/Steam Deck and throw away the switch it's useless, Yes I know it's hypocritical to hear and I should be reviewing how the game PERFORMS ON THE SWITCH WITH NO REFERENCE TO OTHER PLATIFORMS, but you have to understand, I'm a SECRET AGENT and I only feel better when others stop playing the Switch and Nintendo dies so I can play Mario on my PC/PS5/Steam Deck legally!" Yeah I don't like those types, If I wanted a compare, I'd look at a COMPARE VIDEO, and I can take a small REFERENCE but it stops THERE, going any further is basically turning the review into a "comparing video" which was not what the viewers came to see! It's not "this runs better on THIS" it's "how does it RUN ON THIS!" and nothing more!
