Yup. As a proud member of the "Called for Suikoden 6 for a decade and a half" club, I've been a little disappointed, and frankly surprised, at how the response has been to this game. It pales in comparison to the praise things like Chained Echoes and Sea of Stars got, despite doing many of the same things but much better. I'm sickened over Murayama's death but am happy he was able to give us one more gem and am pumped the series is continuing! Let's go for at least 5 entries

@@Lock2002ful I've heard of Terra Memorial but never played it. My understanding was that it was more like a Minecraft or something, about building. I may have to check it out as I'm always actively looking for new JRPGs. I do think Chained Echoes did a couple things that were either new or at least pretty rare like the way characters were built instead of the traditional leveling and the reward board. But yeah it still was pretty much right in line with a traditional JRPG. Sea of Stars did nothing new, was just a total throwback and did absolutely nothing new. Don't get me wrong I vastly enjoyed both and they did a LOT right, most right even, but you can't praise them and criticize Eiyuden. I honestly think it's the random encounters that swayed people's opinions

Thanks for the review as always! I really like the fact that the normal battles are fast and you can just put it on auto while the boss battles are fun and challenging enough (at least on hard). Don't get me wrong, I love a complicated combat system with many layers just like anybody else. But most of the time they tend to overstay their welcome, especially in normal battles as you will be doing tons of them. Being able to do mindless grinding preparing for a boss while doing something else like catching up with your favorite shows or a podcast is something I really miss and this game provides just that. A very cozy and comforting game.
While the game has certains problems, I think it has lots of potential to explore with its sequel (especially now that the devs have confirmed they are working on it).

Excelent review as always. I'm currently playing it and really loving the game.
One thing that I think they nailed is the VA across the board. Considering the sheer number of characters, they did a great job conveying each character personality through the voice acting.

    • @aoihitori
      @aoihitori 6 месяцев назад +7

I played it on JP cuz in first few hours playing it on EN the translations are really off and completely changed the tone and interactions of the characters. There is a part that they should be throwing jokes but in EN they sounded like they hated each other. And this is not just one scene, but throught out the entire playthrough. I haven't finished it yet cuz I played it again in JP.
I dunnu why people pretend that changing the context is fine to a story driven game. What if we they did the same thing with Western Games?
I'm currently making list of mistranslations even though this is not my job but it hurts so much that whoever translated this might be hated their job so they butchered it or probably they hated JRPG so much.

To go along with your issues with combat:
    1) Nearly all Hero Combos are worse than just attacking individually with each character
    2) Magic is pretty much always weaker than physical (even just basic attacks) until very late game, and MP is so limited, items become more useful
    3) I didn't even realize enemies had weaknesses until hours into the game, as there's no clear indicator when you hit a weakness or if they have a weakness at all. It's not like SMT or something where you see character/enemy affinities & "Crit" or "Weak" notifications pop up
    4) You choose character attacks out of order from when you actually move in battle. You get to use to it, but it feels very different from other JRPGs where you select actions based on speed/turn order
But I also agree with everything you mentioned about combat, like not being able to react in combat

I followed a guide to get to at least 100 heroes. A few of the recruiting requirements were so obtuse or annoying I didn't bother. It is helpful to know in advance what heroes will be required for certain missions so you can beef them up in advance. I am a big fan of Suikoden, so this game is right up my alley.

  • @foozlesprite

Fair and balanced review! I will add that I think connection to the characters comes with investing your time into them just like it does with making friends in real life. If you bring a character with you (even if they're a support/backup) they'll interject personalized comments at points in story/conversation/exploration where it would make sense for that character. This is a little harder to do for characters you recruit near the end of the game, though. You can also reveal everyone's backstory a bit more at the divination booth if you want to know more about them. I think they did about as well as they could for such a large cast, but I do agree a bit more from some of the characters would have been nice. Perhaps we'll get more from some of the neglected ones in the DLCs once they come out.

Thanks for this one! I'm having a great time about 10 hours in. Definitely good to go in with the right expectations. They really really want you to know this is a lot of members of the Suikoden team making a game that is very much like Suikoden.
I totally agree with your point about them trying and failing to modernize. Even just UI stuff is often harder than it needs to be. Doesn't have a huge impact on the game, but things like rendering times in the menu preventing you from scrolling through the tabs as quickly as you want are definitely present.
But then I go out in the world and enjoy the plot and pick up a bunch of weird junk to take back to town, and I'm happy.

    • @BradPrichard
      @BradPrichard 6 месяцев назад +1

Oh, just one other small thing. I think your point about the modern language in the localization is valid, but at the same time, the Japanese version has all kinds of very modern foreign loan words as well.
I tend to think that's just kinda how they want it. Doesn't necessarily make it a good decision, but I think I would blame the original script just as much as the localization.

I am already playing the game for a while (lv2 town) but i can see some of the points that was mentioned in this video. namely resources in the beginning are scarce but as you progress it gets better. the trading system is a good way to get money but theres also the items that you can appraise which often being dropped by enemies.
i love that this game hits my nostalgia for Suikoden and other JRPGs of old but makes it very playable with the art style and systems. Theres definitely lots of Quality of Life improvement that can be done but It wasnt really bothering me as much. ( i got the good old notepad beside me again... oh those were the days) i just wish for a "faster animation" setting, Garr's and Nowa's skill takes forever with trash battles.
overall, i am loving the game

It is a game with 100+ characters so many will become "character of hat". I hope for some more games set after this with the characters like those shop character.
I love the choose first then the action happen. it make the combat more fun and add something you can work with or not care about.

Welcome to the Suikoden formula. Come for the story, stay for the character development of almost every character in the game and lore.
The series could have been something if Konami allowed it to florish with the tons of lore it had. Mysteries from past civilizations and recurring (yes, recurring) characters. If Eiyuden continues it will likely follow this formula and hopefully add more to it.

I have very similar feelings to what you say here after completing the game as well. While it nails the *vibes* that made me love Suikoden as a young man, in some cases it was *too* faithful to the way Suikoden 1 & 2 was *mechanically*. While Suikoden 3 & 5 remain my favorites, I hope they refine the formula and keep pumping out more of the Suikoden style games I've always loved. As a last note, it was somewhat strange for me to learn "well, just how would Naruke and M. Sakuraba do a Suikoden soundtrack?" Overall I felt that the soundtrack was hit and miss sometimes, but that may be nostalgia talking.

Not sure if you noticed since I don't recall you mentioning it, but in regards to the battle system - While you do select all of your actions at once before a turn starts, you can see the order in which all of the actions will occur, including the enemies, at the top of the screen. So if you need to heal someone you can use a character that will act before enemy will if you want to guarantee it goes off. In fact I would say a lot of the combat if you playing on full hard difficulty involves using the right attack order to take out enemies before they can attack.

Autobattle works pretty well for non-boss fights especially if you take the time to go in and customize the logic it uses for each character in the "Battle Plan" menu. I do recommend setting it to fight without using MP as a partywide strategy though, or you'll find yourself without MP for bosses. Just stock up on healing items for them to use to heal you instead of using healing magic, for regular fights on auto.

i'll probably eventually look to pick this one up and play it, simply because of the aestetic. i absolutely love the look. pulled off in spades in a remake of my favourite jprg of all time, Star Ocean The Second Story R. that game is incredible and i doubt anything will top it for me, but this game looks fun

after 40 hours of eggfoot breeding and races I might actually have to start playing this game. sounds like it might be fun as well :D
I like the "Attendants" so you can bring plot important characters with you. Without ruining your preferred squad. I always run the same 6 characters. Only switching them out if a stronger new companion shows up. I'm surprised how deep the characters backstories are despite not using most of them.

125 hours in and still trying to get everything to 100 percent (well, or at least get every achievement/trophy).
It is definitely not a perfect game, but I love it and as a backer I am very happy.
I will get an EC tattoo on monday.

I grew up on suikoden and it’s probably my favorite rpg franchise. I don’t game as much these days, but eiyuden is ok. I agree with practically everything you said. Characters could use more development and it needs more modernization. Like, I forgot how tedious games like this can be. For me, I’d love the modernized older ff games with a 2x speed option

I started the game on gamepass. I'm glad I didn't buy it. It's not a bad game, but there is a moment when you have to stop being an hommage and you try to get some personality. And it seems from that review that the game will have little of it. I'm still going to have some fun. For a moment!
    Anyway, great review, as always.

This is how you do it. Finished the game and then review it. People like RGT85 will play an hour as soon as the game releases and then hurry up and make a video about it trying to be the first person uploading one. How the f*** can you review a game that you played a couple hours of?

Nice. I poo-poo’d jrpgs for years. I played Legend of Heroes Trails form Sky and it changed my mind. I don’t love that whole series… but that game got me to try other jrpgs. I seem to favor the look and gameplay of older jrpgs. Playing Dragon Quest 1 now on switch… it’s awesome. A couple things you described about combat might have me hold on this one… hmmm. Do like the visuals. Thanks

The good thing about the dragon quest series is they keep it relatively old school even with the modern games. Dragon quest 11 s can even be played either 3d or old school 2d lol.

I love the art style and how fun it looks just overall. Managing that many characters sounds like a nightmare though, but I understand that its kinda in the name lol. Something I'll take a look at a later date. Too many games on deck to drop $50 on a game I realistically can't get to before the end of the year.

I genuinely enjoyed the game, despite the localization issues.
I will say that most of the physical skill runes were quite lackluster and the magical runes were predictable in their uses. As you’ve mentioned, it was very “this is the right answer” associated with them.
    Hated the beigoma mini-game, though…
Fun Fact: Ni No Kuni II is another game with Suikoden-like mechanics (base building & recruiting for your base). It was not as well-received as the first game, but overall gameplay was generally well-received compared to the first game.

Oh good review, I want to warn that while I love it, this game is still buggy on Switch and prone to soft locking on load screens at the castle (of which there are many). Sadly I've had to shelf this otherwise fantastic game in hopes that they will soon have a fix for this issue. I've just lost too much progress too many times even after being aware of this bug and saving at every opportunity. It's a shame because I was really getting into it and worrying about the game freezing really fights against that immersion. Fingers crossed for a fix!

One of my gripes is hero combos being abysmal to the exception of a few i found. I dunno why normal attacking is nearly better in 100% of the cases.
Hope they fix this in the sequel coz no point using combos if they suck.
2 slot characters need to be buffed too. No point losing 2 chars to one.
Think an extra support slot would be nice too. Most of the time you'll use Cassandra and never use the others. Also the support skills should say they are chance based to trigger. It's not 100%.

Good review. The game looks fun, even if not without some issues. You make the comparison to classic Final Fantasy games but also acknowledge that the game is more specifically modelled after Suikoden. Much of what you note about the game is stuff that you already know if you have played some of the old Suikoden titles. Did you play any Suikoden titles? The game seems geared to recreate the classic Suikoden experience and whether the game works ultimately or not will likely be whether it succeeds in appealing to Suikoden series fans or brings new fans into the series.

There is game breaking bug that wont let me continue the story. Late in game after i talk to seign on top of the castle . Then u have to talk to euma. It says on current goal you cant get to sleep. Try taking a walk. But in game its day light and nothing progresses the story. At all. I have no backup saves.

While not perfect, far, far from some half-assed, nostalgia-bait RPG. Yeah, the stuff you pointed out can annoy or bug some people, but overall these are minor when compared to the finished game. Plus, we still got that DLC & sequels to look forward to.
