      @Projared I had one bit that I don't think you mentioned in your list- you love the gameplay, the graphics, the music, the exploration- but the big one for me that I don't think I heard you mention (and it might be because you hadn't finished it yet) but the story never got a point. Is the story good and engrossing from what you've played? Are the characters good or at the minimum well written as a starting point within the setting? Suikoden 2 gripped me with its overall narrative and characters- does this do the same?

    @Tyrranis 8 месяцев назад +20

    There's a couple of things that I like that aren't mentioned.
    One is the "Allow to flee" option. If you're in a random encounter fight that you are over-leveled for, the "Run" option is swapped to "Allow to flee". Unlike "Run", which has a chance to fail, "Allow to flee" allows you to escape the battle 100% of the time. It's a handy option to have (which Suikoden also had, though it was "Let Go" instead of "Run"), as even if you don't use it just seeing "Allow to flee" is a good indicator that you're over-leveled. It can also appear if most of the party members are over-leveled, but one or two are under-leveled, making the already shortened level catch-up grind even safer as you get to pick-and-choose what battles you take on.
    The other is that there's a seer character that can give you hints as to where recruitable characters are, for a (small) fee. This is something that Suikoden needed and is a welcome addition. The hints are vague enough so that they don't usually tell you exactly where to go, but if you're familiar with the game you'll know from the hints.
    That being said, damn that fishing. One of the recruitable characters requires a specific fish and I can't for the life of me find that single. Goddamn. Fish. ANYWHERE!. The worst part is that recruiting that specific character is necessary for one branch of the castle upgrade tree.
    I don't regret backing this game. It's fun as hell, and a welcome Suikoden successor. Can't wait for my backer Digital OST to get released.
    Oh, and in terms of ProJareds' unique item? Perhaps it could be a Trade Post good or Appraisable antique.

    • @7thlittleleopard7
      @7thlittleleopard7 8 месяцев назад +4

      The fish you're looking for is in a hidden fishing spot next to the ocean cavern in that area. Follow the coast to the side of that cavern and you'll find the spot. Good luck!

    • @jaimerivera2382
      @jaimerivera2382 8 месяцев назад +1

      So, have you found any missable characters or items yet? Which, I know, would be hard to know *beforehand* since you've already got the character and all...but still. That was always a big oof for me in Suikoden.

    • @Tyrranis
      @Tyrranis 8 месяцев назад

      @@jaimerivera2382 Looking at recruiting guides there's only one that's permanently missable, and they require you to get all of the other recruitable characters before a certain point near the end of the game.
      The advice I found is to go all-in on recruiting people after the incident with the destroyed boats (You'll know it when you get to it). After that point, you might not have access to the people you need to recruit others. The seer I mentioned will have a full list of 'hints' for optional people you can recruit at that point, so if she doesn't have any hints for you, you're good to go.

    • @samcarter565

    Alright, I'm sold. I will be checking out how intrusive the story is before purchasing, but so far so good. I've had a lot of bad luck with RPGs in recent years where the game takes the controller away from the player due to the sheer amount of pointless cutscenes and dialog, which makes me want to scream at the game to let me play. Pokémon has gotten REALLY bad about it, but I feel like this is a major trend in RPGs that THINK their story and cutscenes are really good, but the reality is the writing is generic at best, and the cutscenes nothing to write home about. All I want is good gameplay and for the game to focus on being a game, not a visual novel made by subpar writers and animators.

      Can you please explain what was put in that was so "egregious" with references to the Japanese original script to compare? No one is explaining anything they're just like "SBI this" and "woke that."

    • @KainYusanagi
      @KainYusanagi 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@KrimsonKattYT Eh, I'm not big on the "SBI" or "woke" claims specifically (as in those are primarily claims against people and their intent, where my issues are against said people's work, regardless of intent), but there's a bunch of "added characterization" that wasn't there in the original, that is done in part to "round off the corners", that is to take offense to the original form and thus rewrite it according to their sensibilities, and also done in part to "give it more character", that is, adding "characterization" that did not exist in the original because they found it to bland and wanted to 'spice it up". Basically, if you're familiar with the complaints regarding semi-recent Fire Emblem localizations and how it butchered the characterization and overall tone, then you already get the general gist of it. Similarly, criticism for Working Designs-style localization in general, especially as it became known just how little respect for the originals they held.
      One such easy-to-reference example is when a character uses [力任せ] in the original Japanese, which translates as the concept of brute force, or more literally, "using all one's strength"; That gets localized as, "*sigh* Another muscle-brained chud." when a more accurate translation would have been just saying, "Muscle-brain." Could even include the "*sigh*" without changing the tone.
      Another would be when an enemy says, "Here's our secret weapon! It'll squash you flatter than a/your granny's backside!" (not a direct quote, but close enough) when in the original it was just, "Here's our secret weapon! Prepare yourselves!".
      There's the case with the golem where in Japanese it's just, "We did it!" "But what is this huge thing?" while in the localization goes as, "Got him!" "Are you sure it's a he?" which is probably what some are using as fuel re: "woke" and "DEI" complaints, while I just see it as the "added 'characterization' " localization problem.
      You can find quite a few other examples by looking up Twitter user Zakogdo, who has been cataloguing a lot of these sort of issues of localization for awhile.

    About point 8 : I wouldn't say the music is *bad* but comparing it to Suiko 1 and 2 was kinda unavoidable and it really doesn't soar as high I'm afraid. I played 15 hours and for now there are really no memorable tracks. Way less inspired, with no real melody that makes you go "haaa..." and not a soundtrack I'd listen to out of the game, contrary to Suiko 1 & 2's. I went to half a dozen towns and they all had the same rather bland bgm, whereas in S1 or 2 almost every city has its own banger. I hope to be proved wrong later on and it was just the beginning that was relatively weak. I have a few gripes but the game itself is great though, I can't stop playing. I've been wanting such a game for soooo long! FINALLY a JRPG that gets it. I also really love that the hero isn't mute for once, it was a big issue I had with most Suikodens. I just started this a few days ago. Its a lo of fun but there a few things I hope change in any sequels. One: Letting us rotate the camara in towns and dungeons would IMO make navigation less annoying, Two IMO the one on one duel system is much worse then that in any Suikoden game because instead of a rock paper scissors type game its now limited to using scissors and rock while specials charge. Third the Army battle system is fun but IMO midrange compared to the Suikoden series war battles. I like it more then the war battles in Suikoden I and II but not as much as those in III, IV, or V. Fourth: Make MP restoration items available in shops (At least I haven't seen them in stores, Five more autobattle options. All I want is a way to tell my characters to save their MP for healing but I'm not seeing it if its there. And six remove the button mashing element of the cooking minigame. They turned my favorite Suikoden minigame into a slog because someone decided they just had to indulge their love of button mashing

    The only problem is that it feels like this game was a bit vandalized in the localization process. So unless you can tank some "muscle bound chud" "wubadubdubs" and other similar shenanigans of weird localization, you'll need to wait for a fan translation mod or something like it.

    • @KrimsonKattYT
      @KrimsonKattYT 8 месяцев назад +4

      That's not even bad localization. The JP script could have said things very similar. Like for "muscle bound chud" it could have said "muscle bound (insert Japanese slang that means stupid here)". In that case it would be an accurate localization. They're not going to insert Japanese slang words into an English script. For the "wubadubdub" line they may have been translating some character saying a similar nonsense word in Japanese and localized it with a similar English nonsense word. This isn't "woke", this is just a normal localization process.
