Suikoden was the first RPG I ever fully committed to. When I was younger, what I loved most about RPGs was the art. Those cool splash pages in GamePro, PSM, and Electronic Gaming Monthly. At the time, I didn't really play RPGs but loved the stories and the art. Suikoden was the first game I purchased and actually played start to finish. It opened the floodgates and my love of RPGs grew. It's thanks to Suikoden that I was able to enjoy games like Wild Arms, Lunar, FF6, Xenogears, and so many more. Suikoden will always hold a very special place in my heart.

Personally, I like the inventory limits. It adds a sense of forward thinking or tact. It's not for everyone but RPGs become super easy if you can just amass endless items. There's a balance in there somewhere. I miss the fluidity of Suikoden battles though. Where multiple actions go off simoltaniously (ie: attacking two different enemies at the same time) but definately is fast enough...mostly for 6 unit parties.
Late comment here lol. I also hated the "your character died so no exp for him woom woom" but... When the samurai guy survived the "rune robot and knight on the shoulder" fight alone, he leveled up 9 levels above the rest lol. And because of scale levelling, it make the rest of the cast catch up very quickly so it was a win win
Dude I played the first Suikoden when it came out on PS1. You could only use the d-pad, it was infuriating. N,S,E,W. That's it. I did collect every star (felt like a platinum trophy back then). This is a 100% buy for me. Even if I don't get the memberberry good-feels, I want to support this kind of art and these kind of developers.
At least now you're incentivised to use healing items. I'm such a hoarder, showing a lot of constraint when using consumables even when my life depends on it. So this feature might be a good thing in my case. ^^
Hey matty great review man I hope you’re getting enough rest your eyes are looking a little dark and baggy I could be wrong but I’m hoping you’re taking great care of yourself
Writing mid August. Bugs are gone. It’s very good for what it is, a fully realized JRPG. What disappointing is it doesn’t carry forward any of the good ideas that were in rise. No supplemental crafting where you can show up with ingredients and have a thing crafted at massive discount. As a consequence the world is mostly empty, just like most JRPGs. No grass to slash, rocks to smash, boxes to break, etc. It’s also not a Tales-like brawler. I was expecting that after playing Rising which had slick controls and played well. For me that was fine. But even the pics in the Xbox store kind of make it easy to believe that’s what it is. More than a few refunds have come of this. What I’d like to see, if an expansion is actually a possibility is just lots and lots of side quests for all your recruits - not fetch quests, but ones that would also flesh out the characters. Make forever mode a 99 level dungeon like Lufia II. Why more games don’t do this confuses me. Mass purchase and equip is a watchable quality of life function that could be patched. Finally, this team could stand to play lost Vikings. They’ve got a lot of great dungeon design ideas. With 100+ heroes I was expecting more dungeons that would require multiple teams working in tandem to complete them. That’s all the so so stuff. It’s a great game. Content straight through to level 99. Last note - If you’re unhappy with gaming in politics…it’s there. Infrequently, but then they’ll hit you with a a couple lines about dwarves and pronouns…and it will annoy you. A lot. Same with the need to make all evil people white males. Plenty of diversity with the heroes, not with who they’re fighting - and they’re not even scary racist, more like calling Garoo a freak half breed out of context, etc, racist. So the hacks that shoehorned it to this one misses the main opportunity to tell a story here - plight of refugees and migrants during a continental war. That doesn’t surprise me though. Why drive home meaningful points about human suffering when you can just make random people gay - like putting your town hunter in a sequined green jump suit unzipped to where his pubes should start (no kidding)
Still on chapter 9 doing side content in ff7 rebirth and picking up stellar blade tomorrow. The backlog is real. I love suikoden 2 and still have the physical copy for the ps1, so this has me very excited just will have to get it later
not getting xp by dying can set you up with niche leveling system. in suikoden 2 you abuse these to reach lvl 99 by only killing lvl 40-50 enemy and killing 5 of your party
This is probably the best review/ impressions I watched of this game. Thank you. I'm so happy that this game exists. It is as close to the legendary Suikoden as possible
there is a bug in the game where the encounter rate is tied to your refresh rate. the higher you refresh rate the rarer the encounters. this is a problem when playing on higher frequencies than 60hz... so make sure to cap your FPS to 60 using your GPU software or set the monitor refresh rate to 60 if playing on console
I talk about that in the video, but I like with how big the environments are that the random encounters don’t stop you every two steps. Seriously, some of these dungeons are huge!
I totally agree not letting ko’d team members get xp is an atrocious idea. It’s so time wastey to the point of feeling disrespectful to the player. I was so disappointed the Metaphor Refantazio demo does the same thing. Can’t believe Jrpgs are still doing that
@@gothard5 Rising is fine for what it is, but it was incredibly repetitive. The whole game was fetch quests. I minded this less in the opening hours because it was really satisfying seeing the town get built up, but that became frequent. As for the action combat, it was so basic. Once I got the third character it was basically just using their ranged attacks to hit confirm and spam link attacks.
Seeing a first timer play a suikoden title. You guys, it has base building and a war rts like strategy mode. Me... yes, you really need to play suikoen 2
The look of combat kinda reminds me of Beyond the Beyond. Also That kickstarter story kinda reminds me of The Legend of Vox Machina. CR: We would really love it if we could raise $750 thousand. Fans: Here is $11 million.
i feel that Inventory management problem so well. this is also why i always emtied my inventory when doing dungeon exploring in Suikoden. its kinda hasle to discard your Item everytime you get new chest or item. also i wanna ask, is the enemies still drop equipment or Rune? Because you see, In Suikoden some enemies can drop a high lvl equipment that you can only get few times via chest. and its on end game too, and rune that drop from enemies you cant really buy from shop usually.
@retrorebound8887 I figured... Looked too good to be Switch lol. I was hoping to see more Switch footage as I've heard some bad things about how it runs... Unfortunately it's too late for me to "Switch" my choice as a Kickstarter backer. Might try to sell my Switch version and Digital game code to put towards the PS5 version. Might have no choice, since I can't change my backer choice.
@gothard5 Hope so... Maybe after 6 months worth of optimization. It isn't going to be fine any time soon tho, that's for certain. It needs a LOT of work. It never should have been released in this state honestly. They should have delayed the Digital version too, just as they did the Physical version.
Yeah there are some QOL missing like not seeing what the runes give you before slotting them.. but as an old JRPG it's a minor thing to me. Game to me so far is an 8.5/10
So growing up I replayed suikoden 2 multiple times. Trying other party members, switching strats etc.. the problem was though that you couldn’t skip the cutscenes. And after the 2nd play through you just wanna get to the gameplay man. Can you skip cutscenes here?
I just platinum’d CS3 last night and Idk whether to jump straight into CS4 or pick this up…liking the review, but I’ve also seen people being disappointed. Seems to have very mixed reviews. I am leaning towards getting it on release date based on this review and a few others, so thanks for that haha
just doesnt have alot quailty of life modern gaming stuff. like the ps1 era you get no help. lol just gotta figure stuff out, and heard game feels unbalanced goin from easy to super hard.
@@jeffwolfplays0513 Sounds like a true old school RPG to me which is a good thing haha. I ended up buying it, but I’ll play it once I’m done with FFXVI DLC. Thanks for the reply. 🤝
really, some reviewers i watch pronouce it corectly because Eiyuden take the Eiyu part is japanese words for Hero. and commonly you heard if you play old trope JRPG. except you a young generation just newly know JRPG maybe there will be such a case.
@@Kindi001 @Kindi001 I grew up playing JRPGs in the '90s, but very few of those had any kind of voice acting. Moved away from the genre a bit as I got older, which might be why I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about.
@@Twinsfan1992 It might be. I don't speak Japanese. I just know in English "ei" is generally pronounced A, and that's how George Takei pronounces his name. I just think it's weird that I watched two reviews and both sounded like they were saying "Eden" while someone poked 'em in the stomach.
I'm a backpacker, 2 hours into the game. I had likes and dislikes. Likes: Huge throwback to Suikoden Nice 2.5D graphics So far, the story seems to be engaging. Nice VAs (both Jap and Eng) Dislikes: Very few adjust options (Camera, Map, etc) Terrible camera angles some area Bad quality of life (I expect a better QoL these days) Hard mode is still pretty damn easy (Auto Play all the way) Random Encounters (I honest don't like random encounters) Very Very little innovations when it comes to combat. From the above, you can see that I have more dislikes than likes, which is true but I'll play it anyway despite all the dislikes in the hope that the story will triumph everything else.
Can anyone help me here? Octo 2 or this one? Wich one is harder and has a best combat? Also Do i need to use all those characters? I know they are diferent enough but...they both are long term investements so...
Eiyuden story and town design varieties are better than Unicorn Overlord. But Unicorn Overlord is better in things like less loading time and no crashes. Eiyuden crash 8 times for my entire playthrough especially the castle area with 120 people is super leggy. But Unicorn overlord don't have 120 character walking around so not gotta compare this area. Biggest issue with this game is still optimisation and control like the racing mini game....joy stick won't even work properly...and some area can be soft lock if u don't do it properly..and what the purpose of hero skill when it does less dmg than normal attack LOL
@@retrorebound8887 Suikoden 2 is definitely the best in the series I think you would love it personally but you definitely gotta be in the mindspace to play it because it's LOOOOOOONG as hell but man it's really good.
I've heard that Konami may release the Suikoden 1 and 2 remasters in the Summer of 2024. Obviously, I would take that with a grain of salt but I sincerely hope it's true.
having no previous experience or nostalgia with Suikoden as a series ( I did play the first game a bit, but not enough to really fall in love with it), I was mildly excited for this. I'm happy people who were into Suikoden are getting a game like this but man... hearing about that inventory limit.... makes me less interested to play this. It is a pet peeve of mine. I can take it in older games, but not so much in newer ones. I loathe inventory space limits more than any other mechanic in any game (exceptions being when that limit makes sense or is justified). I'll wait for this to go on sale for really cheap. I'm in no rush to play this anyway.
I'm enjoying the game so far. The character I do not like in this game it was only in the first hour was Lian For some reason, I just cannot stand her 😂
I hope they either adjust the random battle difficulty or give us a Hard Mode, cus yeah having to do nothing but mash Attack for ALL random fights is kind of stupid & not cool. I would much rather have battles where I have to actually try a bit to win.
There is a hard mode it's just not clearly shown for some odd reason. The game in the beginning asks you if you like to start the game on normal, if you decline it you can switch it to hard mode and a few other settings (kinda similar to Draconian mode in DQXI)
Galdorf and the pronouns…and the pedo castle Hunter have DEI officer written all over them. There’s a lot more than that, but those had me laughing as just ridiculously stupid
I played Rising, honestly you didn't miss much. Treasure Hunter goes to village, teams up with the mayor's daughter and a Kangaroo man to find girl's missing dad you do some dungeon crawling and fight big bad.

The loading for switch makes it a must wait until they patch the load times
fuck yea was hoping this would be good, been waiting for a game like this on game pass
Finally another game like Suikoden, now if only the industry would make another Vandal Hearts style RPG
48 hours in and loving the game a lot.
At least now you're incentivised to use healing items. I'm such a hoarder, showing a lot of constraint when using consumables even when my life depends on it. So this feature might be a good thing in my case. ^^
Amazing review :) did you get a nintendo switch code? I’ve heard the performance is bad and wanted to know if that’s true
I mean it's the switch. It's a turned based jrpg though so It wouldn't really effect gameplay that much.
I played on PC. Switch was there for presentation/set design, but I’ve read that the Switch version is bad. PC is totally fine tho.
@@TheeCambion it seems like it has really long load screens between random encounters. Frame rate I wouldn’t mind
@@retrorebound8887 thanks!
@@NintenGeeksMariaThe janky fix for low rate encounter seems to be capping your frame rate to 60 fps in nvidia settings or something similar
Hey matty great review man I hope you’re getting enough rest your eyes are looking a little dark and baggy I could be wrong but I’m hoping you’re taking great care of yourself
Fallout 4 update and Eiyuden Chronicles in the same week? A man only has so much free time 😭
Writing mid August.
Why drive home meaningful points about human suffering when you can just make random people gay - like putting your town hunter in a sequined green jump suit unzipped to where his pubes should start (no kidding)
the auto attack is wild! just casually used my 500 all heal medicine on a random encounter. fkcn hell hahahaha!
Still on chapter 9 doing side content in ff7 rebirth and picking up stellar blade tomorrow. The backlog is real. I love suikoden 2 and still have the physical copy for the ps1, so this has me very excited just will have to get it later
Really anxious. Just one day and 16h left so I can download on Steam and play for months.
not getting xp by dying can set you up with niche leveling system. in suikoden 2 you abuse these to reach lvl 99 by only killing lvl 40-50 enemy and killing 5 of your party
This is probably the best review/ impressions I watched of this game. Thank you. I'm so happy that this game exists. It is as close to the legendary Suikoden as possible
How’s the random encounter rate heard it’s not that high at all going through the world map without barely getting into battles has me worried a bit?
there is a bug in the game where the encounter rate is tied to your refresh rate. the higher you refresh rate the rarer the encounters. this is a problem when playing on higher frequencies than 60hz... so make sure to cap your FPS to 60 using your GPU software or set the monitor refresh rate to 60 if playing on console
@@luccan ok thank you very much
I talk about that in the video, but I like with how big the environments are that the random encounters don’t stop you every two steps. Seriously, some of these dungeons are huge!
The encounter rate being tied to your refresh rate isn't a bug. It was done that way purposely.
don't wait for the remake play the og suikoden 2. also, great video!
I totally agree not letting ko’d team members get xp is an atrocious idea. It’s so time wastey to the point of feeling disrespectful to the player. I was so disappointed the Metaphor Refantazio demo does the same thing. Can’t believe Jrpgs are still doing that
how is eiyuden chronicles rising? i never tried it
I can't for the tier lists to drop
Worth it totally worth the wait played or beat it got the true ending in 1 playthrough
do you need to play the chronicle rising before this?
No, but Rising is a fun little game in its own right!
No, but there's a few things that carry over on your save if you did play Rising. Nothing major, just a little bit of continuity.
Good to hear it’s worth it! My copy came in a few days ago but I wanted to do a quick playthrough of Rising first.
Rising is fantastic, might even like it more than this a little bit. Prefer the full action gameplay.
Rising is infinitely better than HH.
@@gothard5 just started the new one so I can’t say for sure but I am definitely leaning that way so far.
@@gothard5gotta be trolling there’s barely any story to rising. Just a prelude
Also
That kickstarter story kinda reminds me of The Legend of Vox Machina.
Sprint feature? You missed the running boots in the cave with the mine carts
Great Review! Can you please tell us what system the footage shown here is from? Thanks!
PC!
@@skins4thewin Switch version will be just fine
@gothard5 Hope so... Maybe after 6 months worth of optimization. It isn't going to be fine any time soon tho, that's for certain. It needs a LOT of work. It never should have been released in this state honestly. They should have delayed the Digital version too, just as they did the Physical version.
@@gothard5 it's a little premature to be saying that.
Im loving this game so much!!
Yeah there are some QOL missing like not seeing what the runes give you before slotting them.. but as an old JRPG it's a minor thing to me. Game to me so far is an 8.5/10
You almost made turn based sound like a bad thing, unless i miss heard, but i personally prefer it over button mashing combat.
I prefer it too!
So growing up I replayed suikoden 2 multiple times. Trying other party members, switching strats etc.. the problem was though that you couldn’t skip the cutscenes. And after the 2nd play through you just wanna get to the gameplay man. Can you skip cutscenes here?
Yes you can
I hear Battle Network, I give you my like and subscribe.
@@oscarmontano5236 yeah ima get the wait till may till the physical copy comes out. That should be enough time to implement some patches. lol
"Ei" as in George Takei, neighbor, and weigh. I keep hearing people pronounce it with an "ee" like "Eden" or something, and it's wild to me.
really, some reviewers i watch pronouce it corectly because Eiyuden take the Eiyu part is japanese words for Hero. and commonly you heard if you play old trope JRPG. except you a young generation just newly know JRPG maybe there will be such a case.
@@Kindi001 @Kindi001 I grew up playing JRPGs in the '90s, but very few of those had any kind of voice acting. Moved away from the genre a bit as I got older, which might be why I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about.
I thought it was phonetically "eye-you-den"
@@Twinsfan1992 It might be. I don't speak Japanese. I just know in English "ei" is generally pronounced A, and that's how George Takei pronounces his name. I just think it's weird that I watched two reviews and both sounded like they were saying "Eden" while someone poked 'em in the stomach.
@@WikrinThe late Murayama put out a video shortly after the KS campaign launched explaining the pronunciation. It's "A-yoo-den"
I'm a backpacker, 2 hours into the game. I had likes and dislikes.
Likes:
Huge throwback to Suikoden
Nice 2.5D graphics
So far, the story seems to be engaging.
Nice VAs (both Jap and Eng)
Dislikes:
Very few adjust options (Camera, Map, etc)
Terrible camera angles some area
Bad quality of life (I expect a better QoL these days)
Hard mode is still pretty damn easy (Auto Play all the way)
Random Encounters (I honest don't like random encounters)
Very Very little innovations when it comes to combat.
From the above, you can see that I have more dislikes than likes, which is true but I'll play it anyway despite all the dislikes in the hope that the story will triumph everything else.
Do you plan on reviewing Unicorn Overlord?
This game will be released on May 21st
Can anyone help me here? Octo 2 or this one? Wich one is harder and has a best combat? Also Do i need to use all those characters?
I know they are diferent enough but...they both are long term investements so...
Play Suikoden 3! Don’t listen to anyone who says not to. Just play it without comparing it to any others.
You should just play Suikoden 2. It’s gorgeous pixel art, even today. It doesn’t need a remaster to enjoy.
Yeah, I’m getting impatient so I just might lol
I think you would love suikoden 2 and it definitely holds up to todays standards.
@@retrorebound8887 Suikoden 2 is definitely the best in the series I think you would love it personally but you definitely gotta be in the mindspace to play it because it's LOOOOOOONG as hell but man it's really good.
YOU NEED TO GO PLAY THE SUIKODEN GAMES, they are goated!!!!!
Where can they be played? The HD remaster of 1+2 are coming but are currently TBD.
@@Blasted2Oblivion I have them all on PS1-PS2
Suikoden 2 best game I ever played
Caint wait for this to release im more of a old school rpg player sea of stars was great now its time to put some hours into hundred heroes
Please let us know when you get a fury or berserk rune.....or double attack. Some runes might have a low drop rate ;(😢
Double attack yes, rune havent found them, but my guess is they are there under a different name
@@tahamata56 😊 thanks
I'm enjoying the game so far. The character I do not like in this game it was only in the first hour was Lian For some reason, I just cannot stand her 😂
I recieved the game early and been playing for two weeks now :)
About a week for me. Loving it.
I don't know why but you really had me going with your description of the foul-mouthed, shit-talking healer girl 😂😂🤣
"there's nothing quite like it" yes there is, it's called Suikoden.
heard its a fucking mess on switch sigh anyone know for sure?
I hope they either adjust the random battle difficulty or give us a Hard Mode, cus yeah having to do nothing but mash Attack for ALL random fights is kind of stupid & not cool. I would much rather have battles where I have to actually try a bit to win.
There is a hard mode it's just not clearly shown for some odd reason. The game in the beginning asks you if you like to start the game on normal, if you decline it you can switch it to hard mode and a few other settings (kinda similar to Draconian mode in DQXI)
@@ChampionSushima That is good to know! Thanks for the info!
Some of the localization is reddit tier cringe. Japanese need to stop trying to "appeal" to the west
Galdorf and the pronouns…and the pedo castle Hunter have DEI officer written all over them. There’s a lot more than that, but those had me laughing as just ridiculously stupid
Looking forward to this….Suikoden series is my 2nd favorite JRPG behind Final Fantasy…Suikoden 2 is a all-time title for me 💯🔥
Just bought the game, hoping that it has a "recap" or something for Rising because I wasn't interested in the gameplay of that one.
It does not, but you dont miss much, besides some character info and worldbuilding. Rising made me really like some characters more.
I played Rising, honestly you didn't miss much. Treasure Hunter goes to village, teams up with the mayor's daughter and a Kangaroo man to find girl's missing dad you do some dungeon crawling and fight big bad.
