Patrick, your words are AWESOME for they display personal growth. Striving for perfection is a MISGUIDED pursuit as is seeking happiness. You are wise here when you speak of a desire to be content more than happy. Your thoughts are similar to those of Benjamin Franklin in "Plan for Attaining Moral Perfection". "... the mere speculative conviction that it was our interest to be completely virtuous was not sufficient to prevent our slipping..."
The "slight linear progression" is what got me. I feel like we all get these moments where we come up and we are feeling ourselves for awhile and then we slip up, we make a mistake and we get stuck beating ourselves up over it. But just remembering to focus on the small things you can do everyday to improve yourself is best. The big wins are cool and all... they feel great in the moment. But the small wins, the consistency, is what ultimately matters more overtime.
