- FINALLY!! Yes, folks my garage just got a new old addition in the form of the amazing BMW E39!! Widely regarded as one of the best 5-Series BMWs from Bavaria, this unit is a CBU but homologated model (supposedly) that churns out 170bhp from its sublime 6-cyl engine, mated to a 5-speed auto with sequential shift.
This one has been cared for mechanically, because it didn't even need my typical "blood transfusion" SOP, it had been serviced just recently. I drove it back from Ipoh and it just blew me away. for a 20yr old car, it's the fastest thing I've bought in a very long time 😀
I'm totally smitten by this car, and no, I'm gonna try not to change the wheels, I love these original 16s, but tyres are proving hard to get. The car will be getting an interior spruce up though, in the near future, in the meantime I'm just gonna enjoy this car, cos I've been wanting one for AGES!!
As promised in the video, I'd reveal the price, well here goes. This car was advertised for just RM8,000/- but I closed the deal at RM7.8k. It's a LOT of car for the price of the new Yamaha Y15 kapchai.... I'm thrilled! :)

What more could a 00's teenager dream of. Thanks to BMW for making my teenage days amazing. I used to cut out pictures of this car from newspaper ads, paste it on my wall and fantasize. Such was the craze! I'm in my 30s now and I've yet to live out my fantasies. Couldn't get the car and the girl. Still enjoyed endless summer nights on a busy highway in my 06' Camry though. Hahaha

Congratulations Chris! It's a solid tank the E39. My dad had one, the same model. A 1997 523i, still in relatively mint condition just like yours. For me, the best part about the car is the engine, how it revs so smoothly yet you get that nice inline-6 growl. Its a real good motor this one. And the mechanical steering is to die for! The drive on this car is amazing despite its age. Congratulations again! You got the best deal of 2020 hands down haha! Enjoy!

This is a very very good car my friend.. you got your self a treasure.. I needed up buying 2 after my first experience with a 525 1997 used it for 5yrs....its so addictive so then I bought a 2nd one 528i... 1998...they are great cars.... Today I'm doing a cooling system overhaul on my first e39... Married to it for 6yrs now.... Thumps up for bmw e39

Here in Colombia I have a very similar one but with manual transmission. It is in excellent condition and still turns eyes and causes pleasant comments.
The engine has sufficient power and its consumption in city and highway is magnificent for its size and age. I am talking about 12 liters / 100 km in the traffic jams of Bogota and 8.3 liters on the road.
I have had several cars of recent models but none convey the sensation of my old but still wonderful e39 523i of 1998.

happen to be a owner of a white e39 523i years back when i was a student. Only had the car for a few months (got it from a dealer for around 3.5k aud ), it wasnt in that good condition (im sure it wasnt as good as yours lol) but it wasnt too bad too .Short period of time but still, some memories with it. Im sure it would be a gem if its kept properly throughout the years! Glad that you found this one!

Believe it or not, the car was fully serviced just a couple of weeks ago, I've not had to do my usual "blood transfusion", and I'm not even going to have to paint it 😀😀😀

The only reason BMW under stated its hp was for company tax purposes in EU. At the time.

This car for that price is a steal! It's so original! How many previous owners so far? More than 1 I guess because the number plate looks interchanged. And I thought the manual gear shifter was supposed to be + downwards and - upwards 🤔

Ah, an E39. When i was a young kid, I call this a gangster car. One of the shady towkays in my area had one of these. In Black. Every time I saw that car, it makes the hair behind my neck stand! That is how strong the aura of this car is. Also one of the cars in my want-to-own-it-someday list.

You mentioned when you put it in auto its like tornado for the AC, just a heads up, at 4:04 if you see the 2 louver looking thing under 2 temperature switches, there is actually a fan in it that sucks the air from the cabin to tell the climate control what to do, over time they just collected dust and you need to clean them out.

By the way Chris, when you're looking to buy used cars, do you have a website that you prefer/frequently go to? Mudah, Carlist, etc. Or do you ask around friends that you're looking for a specific model and have them introduce you the sellers? Again, congrats on the buy!

Thank you Zainal!! Touch wood the wiring seems to still be okay, but yes, I've had to rewire cars in the past and believe me, it's a big job, costly too, even for Japanese cars. Sadly there aren't many guys left who can properly rewire a car, it's a dying trade really. Hope I won't need that for the E39!🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾🙏🏽😀

Is it a 2.3l like you mentioned at the end of video? I thought it's 2.5l with 170bhp, whereas the 525i is also 2.5l but with 192bhp. And if not mistaken the pre facelift headlight has orange signal lens.
This 16 inch and the 15inch rims on the prefacelift 520i looks really nice.
Yes, it's a 523i, as per the title too. I love these original 16in alloy wheels, but finding tyres is proving to be a challenge, it's a weird size, haha!! This car has the M52 6cyl engine with 170hp, more than good enough!!😊

This gen had a 520i, 523i & 528i, the 525i came in the next gen, replacing the 528i.

Hi Chris, just wondering does your '99 523i comes with the newer M52tu engine? I am from Hong Kong and I purchased a '97 523i with exact the same titanium silver/grey interior colour configuration as yours last year. But the previous owner of mine changed the alloys to the M5 18" spec and I am still trying to find the original set. You are so lucky to find this clean example man.
Thanks bud, yeah it's the originality of this unit that sparked my initial interest, then I went and test drove it, and well, game over, I had to have it. It's using the original M52 engine, zero mods to it. Hope u manage to get a set of the ori alloys, but just a heads up, tyres aren't that easy to find (here), they're a weird size, 225/55 R16. I found out Michelin Primacy & Conti MC6 come in those sizes, as well as Achilles from Indonesia and Goodride from Thailand too😉

Hard to say cos I've never owned one, but by and large cars are as reliable as u treat them 😀

Thanks!! Actually, truth be told, the upkeep and maintenance has been negligible. Really, no joke. It's one go the least demanding and needs the least amount of attention of ALL my Weevils. Just an amazingly brilliant car this is 😀👍🏾🙏🏽

U can opt for Michelin primacy4 instead of Michelin pilot sport 3 for more quiet and comfortable ride which suits this car.. I found this size in Michelin website and I believe you can get it at any tyreplus or Michelin outlet.. enjoy your ride!

I own a 03' 520i(Like Kon's) and a 99' 728i. I must say the 520i with the GM transmission is so smooth, but the e38 has more torque and that baby just goes. Would like to know your opinion on the e38, which car would u prefer to own the e38 or the e39??
I love both tbh, but the annual road tax on the E38 puts me off, haha!!😉

Hi Chaiyya, nope actually just some trim interior parts, 2 tyres, full service plus lubes flush, and 2 lower arm bushes. This car was very well cared for. The new owner is a lucky guy 👍🏾😊

Chris, in ur opinion how's the seat compared to volvo? I ve sat in a few volvo (& bmw too) before. In my opinion Volvo's seats is the most comfortable i ve ever sat.

Hi Chris, you sure that's a 1999 model? It's got the M52 single vanos engine. 1999 model came with an M52tu which is double vanos. Check the car specs at BMW vin decoder to confirm. Plus your headlamps are the lci model. Good deal nonetheless.
Yup, the previous owner upgraded the lights, but this car is indeed a single Vanos M52. It's a CBU import by the way, from UK 😀😀😀

Oh definitely, it's a very good car, I was actually scoping out a manual variant before getting this E39. There are some nice ones for sale on Mudah & FB marketplace, go for it 😊👍🏾
i think the best looking 5 series is the e39. but i prefer the rear end of the e34 haha. the e34 is smaller so would be a bit easier to move around in

I drove the E240 mercedes W210 (facelifted) for almost 8 years before finally selling it off last year. All those 8 years, I always wondered why didn't I go for the E39 instead. It's believed to be probably the best engineered 5 series ever. Enjoy the Bavarian beauty Chris!
