  • The BMW E39 5 Series is often reputed as an expensive and unreliable car to maintain. Is it true? Doesn't seem so in my month's plus of ownership.
    Have learned a few things along the way and more to learn in the coming months and years. Here's what I figured you need to know before putting your money down on one.
    I've found the following channels extremely useful in learning more about maintaining my E39:

    One has to accept the fact that if we want to buy German performance cars, it will come with a maintenance cost. Imagine getting a BMW E39 for about 30K as in my case I got a 525, maintenance is part of owning a car. Comparatively if we buy an 8 year old Toyota Camry or Honda Accord, it will not be much cheaper and I can assure you that the spare parts are not cheap as well. If we look at just getting a good car in shape for use in the foreseeable 4 - 5 years for a price less than a MYVI then it is actually a good deal. The biggest issue with BMWs is the cooling system and you would need to change the 2 manifold water pipes which is hidden from view and the 4 air hoses at the oil separator location. The total cost of these hoses is about RM 1000+ and with labour would cost another RM 600 or so. These hoses need to be changed as it will leak water and sir which will give rise to cooling issues as well as power related issue. These are typical of M54 engines and after a good preventive maintenance, you will be able to get about 75 - 80% of the efficiency at about 14% of the original price. Budget about RM 2000 - 2500 per year for maintenance which is reasonable for a 16 year old car. I have a E46 and E39 and so far if has performed well and relatively trouble free except for wear and tear replacement. Don't bother to overhaul the engine when it is rough, best to change into a used Japanese engine (plenty around) which has clocked about 80K from the chop chop shop and they are pretty good. Gear box oil should be changed preferably about 35K km and use the gearbox oil from BMW from Bavarian Auto and your gear box will be alright. The lifetime warranty of the gearbox from BMW only covers 100k miles only and if you do not change the gearbox oil as recommended by Bavarian Auto then you are looking at about RM 2000 - 2500 for a used Japanese gearbox and labor about RM 900 to change it. Sounds scary but these are maintenance cost when we buy an old BMW and refurbish it to use with the related performance of a BMW.

    So if the fluid hasn’t been replaced, and gets replaced, how often should it be replaced in the future? It’s interesting that the ATF replacement is still very controversial for the modern BMWs as well. I am still 50/50 on it, especially now that I am closing in on the 60k mark.
    I think the general story of the BMWs being expensive to run etc is definitely blown out of proportion. A lot of the cases where expensive repairs were needed was because of the fact that prior owners did not properly conduct the periodic maintenance or skimped around and tried to cut corners. Yes it is less forgiving than a Toyota but if you followed the required maintenance from the book, they are actually very much reliable cars and surprisingly more economical in some aspects, like fuel consumption than an equivalent size and engined Japanese or Korean alternative.

    • @KonWaiLuen
      @KonWaiLuen  5 лет назад

      If your car is based in Malaysia, I say change it. But in Canada, it might be something you can skim on. As long as the ATF is not subject to severe heat or stop/go traffic, the oil does not degrade so severely.
      In any case, there's a reason why they still put a drain plug in the transmission casing.

  • @kenchong021
    @kenchong021 5 лет назад

    Another thing is that the DISA valve needs to be checked as the original comes with a plastic flap and pin and if the pin snap, the DISA valve flap will fall into the engine. You can buy a China made replacement for about RM 300 or order a repair kit for about RM 350 which comes with an aluminium flap and a stainless steel pin. The Vanos seal need to be changed every 80K km and most of the units are worn out. Likewise you can order the seals to replace them. After these replacements, the low end torque of the E39 and E49 will improve tremendously and you will feel what it is to drive a BMW

    • @KonWaiLuen
      @KonWaiLuen  5 лет назад

      Interesting that you raised the topic of the DISA valve and cooling system today. Just got both fixed recently and finishing up the video edit. I was seriously considering the X8R DISA valve repair kit you mentioned, but upon opening it, found that the valve totally couldnt sustain suction. The flap was soft like jelly and must be replaced. Opted for a brand new ori unit. Painful on the wallet, but far greater peace of mind now.

    • @KonWaiLuen
      @KonWaiLuen  2 года назад +1

      If you look hard enough some UK spec E39s do come with ISOFIX. They were optional in Europe at the time, and it really depends if the first owner specced it into the car. I personally encountered one such car during my hunting phase but its condition was unsatisfactory. As for mine, local spec, no ISOFIX, so use belt installation

    • @KonWaiLuen
      @KonWaiLuen  5 лет назад +1

      RM23k for a 530i is a damn good price. E39 530i, if it was original 530i from factory, is quite rare in Malaysia due to its high cc. There are a lot of 530i in the market converted from 520i and may not have engine endorsed, thus complicating ownership transfer.
      There are quite a lot of experts capable of doing the conversion well, however, so your mechanic should still watch out for the same common problems of this car.... cooling system, DISA valve, ATF, oil leaks, etc.
