- Recently had my E39's suspension refurbished (more on that in separate video). Time for a Genting Run.
In this video, the M54 2.2's lack of torque really shows when climbing up slopes, but the car's legendary handling is plain to see at the corners.

I have the 2.0l with just 190nm torque. I mean as long as the scenery is flat like in north germany its all ok but when i drive in the middle of germany things change. The old 20i gets overtaken by many smaller cars but i don't take that too serious. I love my 20i for its smooth six cylinder which still sounds awesome no matter if has only 1991 ccm. Kon enjoy your E39! E39 friends know why they love their cars no matter where they are from. Greetings from north Germany ✌✌
Hello there! The 2.2 is slightly better but not by much. Haha. Good top speed, but needs the full breadth of revs for rapid acceleration
@@KonWaiLuen yepp the 2.2l is a bit stronger and faster that´s right, the E39 should at least have these 170 HP, if i lived in the mountains the 2l would not be the best choice. but the flat country is perfect for the little engine, however i prefer the old single vanos m52 engine (my favorite is the 2,5l because these are more reliable and cheaper to repair. BMW did a lot wrong on the M54, they wanted to make things better but failed in my opinion. the oil consumption, the DISA failure, the f*** crank case ventilation, if you ever fix one of these you´ll remember my words :-)
Thanks for the tips. I'm keeping my eyes and ears open on the issues you mentioned above.
Is the car in it's original state or it has been modified by previous owners?
Love the way you drive! And the sound! That's the way. . .
Driving your baby up the famous winding road on a cool day wearing your favourite jersey and watch having it recorded and posted on RUclips, that's life.
Glad to see you're having a great time with your car... smiling all the way lol.
😊😊😊😊
Waaaaahaaaa I knew you will try the genting haha lol. Thanks for the drive can't wait to go up next week. Huat arhhhh.
Save drive!
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Me too!
Ahhh the satisfaction of communicating with your lovely car! I really feel handling of a car is crucial to get the most fun at winding roads! Except you have a big gunji haha
Car's chassis gives me confidence.
Lovely run! Nice to see you overtaking A4, Megane RS, Corrado and E30 there so we have some nice diversity there! Lovely clean run, and i love how you wring the rev counter to the max! (Only NAs get to enjoy that, forced induction engines rarely get to that region before we're going too fast.
One joy of picking the lowest powered version is that I get to enjoy the full rev spectrum safely more often. Haha.
Great English, good video. Thank you.
Wow wow wow The E39 are really test to its limit ......really the best 5 series of all time :)
It is!
Hey Kon, just a few questions, how much does it cost to fully overhaul your suspensions? And do they consist of M Sport parts?
Loves the e39 interior... so timeless..
Hahaha. .need to fix a couple of broken switches la though.
It’s normal bro... old car.. same happens to my e53 x5 3.0... Almost done refurnished the x5... considering keeping it for about 2 more years... e39 is always in my heart but my other half sure makes noise if I buy another e39...😅
Ko , how is the fuel consumption ? With full tank of gas, how many km can u go?
Nice la. Giving the 5 Series a run for it's money.
Gotta get back some ROI. Haha
Hi..how much it cost you to change suspension system?
COYG!
Out of curiosity, was yours with the GM transmission or the ZF version? It’s interesting that your E39 doesn’t hold gears and revs too high like in the newer ones that tend to hold the RPMs a bit. Great sound though!
ZF 5HP19, I believe. GM gearboxes were fitted only to the older ones.
Bro, where do you send your E39 for repairs and service. And u mentioned in one of your video that u joined a WhatsApp group chat for E39.
I just bought one and have no clue
Mostly send mine to Syed in PJ, but nowadays also delegate some work to my landlords Prestige Car Care. Come drop by EvoClub Car Wash for a chat if you need any advice
Kon, do you have a review of the Mercedes E300 Bluetec Hybrid?
lousy car.. lots issues
“ I can listen this inline six all fuckin day” lol enjoy your ride my friend
Hi fauzi here. I also did a Genting run with my 2002 E39 520i recently. I found my brakes were not that good especially on those downhill sections...yeah understand of the car's weight, but you can really feel brakes are struggling and also that is when I can really feel how heavy my car is. Any opinions on the e39 520i braking performance? Anyways maybe sometime i can join for another Genting run perhaps. Cheers!
Yeah. Have been warned by another of this. Didnt face any issue whilst going down, but was consciously avoiding braking where possible. If braking is a concern, you can consider upgrading to 530i or 540i brakes.
Been following your e39 story for some time now. Was thinking of getting an e39 for myself and with your videos, I find myself more reasons to own one. I'm looking at a 525i, with a m54 engine, good choice? Or should I go for m52 instead? (love the facelifted lights and m sport interior trim though)
The common consensus is that the M52, being the less complex engine, is more reliable. The M54, on the other hand, gives you higher outputs for the displacement. There are more things that can fail in the M54, but most of these can be nipped by preventive maintenance.
I see. Do you mind to list some of the preventive maintainance exercise needed for an e39 5 series?
The cooling system is known to be a weak point. Check the hoses, thermostat, and water pump.
If you go for an engine with Double VANOS, be it M52 or M54, the DISA valve is a trouble spot too.
Also ensure that the previous owner have previously changed the ATF at regular intervals.
wm6091 i got one msport ori 0173210456
Thanks so much for your response Kon!
Mr. Kon i have 1 nightmare question for you.... Do you have a problem with your transmission because mine father 2004 e46 325i shifting down really hard
My transmission so far ok. Your E46 is auto or SMG?
@@KonWaiLuen standard 5AT, but then, i just figured out the problem. The problem was gear position switch.
I wonder. Does this feel as underpower as e.g. Proton Preve IAFM?
A little when climbing steep slopes.
Yo, Kon is a gooner!
Awww yeahhh
Kon did you overtake Chris Wee at 6:34? :)
He was slowing down after pushing hard earlier. Haha
Kon Wai Luen haha
How come your E39 has a OKU sticker?
For his father(wheelbound)
Yeah. I would be pissed off seeing an oku drive like that :)
Hahahahahhahaha
@@jumbeaux1 hahahaha
I am in dilemma now choosing my car insurance. What brand that you used for Persona?
Liberty
Waja on AIG, Persona on Takaful, E39 on Berjaya Sompo
@@KonWaiLuen Any tips to choose? Let do a brief video how to pick. Waiting for next video.
After the hill run, gearbox still ok?
If anything, it's been smoother.
Do you think the E39 is a good first car?
If you can afford the maintenance, which is not scary as most people tell you, but neither is it cheap, yes.
Kon,first one is always the special one
Do another one with the traction control pressed down 20seconds please.
Hmmmmm
@@KonWaiLuen so far nobody did this "Easter egg mod test" on video yet.
Whats the best time to do genting run?
night time. 3am
I'd recommend 7am onwards for safety reasons
Sepang track run next!!
Engine and brakes wont last 2 laps man. Haha.
Heavy
Very
Stock absorber?.. go get the blisten and change the anti roll... the car will hug the bend even more... nice review on the run btw. The sound of the in line six is so sweet!!
Stock absorbers, but recently refurbished.
How much cost for refurbished?
@@KonWaiLuen hi how long did the refurbished shock absorber last??
About 2 years, then I swapped in full M Sport suspension
Terbaik kon.#coyg
Terima kasih! Semoga menang lawan Fulham. Haha.
We got iwobinho..camon 😆
i know that feel with that kind of underpower engine in a such a big carr. mine is preve manual 1.6l with 107hp only lol
The biggest tragedy of the Preve is that it never had an engine-transmission combo that ever did its chassis justice.
Bmw Inline-6 sound so crispy
Sense of occasion whenever I drive it
The marks on the windscreen left behind by suction cups 😆
Haha. Yeah!
Wow!! You really pushed your e39.. no sympathy for the old girl there 😁 excellent video kon.
BMWs need to be driven hard every once in a while... and be given loads of TLC at the workshop. 😅
partly helped by MC6??
@@KonWaiLuen ini alasan utk bawa laju ni. 😂😂
OKU??? hows the MC6?
MC6 is good. Loses out to PS3 on wet grip, but otherwise a great all-round tyre.
@@KonWaiLuen PS3 is old.. PS4?
Have not tried PS4. Both my other cars still on PS3
@@KonWaiLuen MC6 are cheaper than PS4, so i was wondering if its worth it
Get a nice front strut bar and feel even better!
Not necessary for now. Happy with the car's dynamics as it is.
Kon you’re an Arsenal fan?
Only one reason why I wear the shirt. :)
Its finally here 🤩🤩🤩
Yeah. Didnt wanna bring it up before it was ready.
@@KonWaiLuen looks like it handled like a dream 👌🏾
Nice dashboard
Previous owner kept the car well.
👍🏽
aiyo boss...should have 5 people in the car mah...Kon .stop waffling lah. ..you are struggling constantly in 5k rpm range with just 1 person. did you get it towed at the end?
Fuhhh... waffling. What a word.
@@KonWaiLuen ok.ok..bro...good video...good video...but for the car ..any 525/528/535i....would have saved the day...as an ex-owner. of e39 520i, I promised never buy with bmw with a 20i at the end again. never.. Took the same route and did the same like your video. The temp went high, no choice but to stop mid way to enjoy the awana view before avoid a total meltdown. hope u see where i am coming fr.
The engine temperature reading was stable throughout my run, but the E39's cooling system is known to be a weak point. Yours was perhaps closer to failure than mine was.
6:15 I went Oh shit!
U make me wanna steal my dad's e39 525 for a drive so bad, too bad the interior is starting to fall apart. The engine sounds so good but err yeap the lack of power is a real thing, trying to save up to get my dad a German built supercharger kit and a good exhaust system.
BTW it Ain't cheap, total mod n setup 4 supercharger can go up to 30k 😬
I am gonna avoid the forced induction route, but will consider a 3.0 transplant if future budget permits
I get what u mean but there are many people using the same kit out there so I thought I'd give it a shot, but I haven't exactly set my mind yet because it is very costly and it is very risky to mess with an old bmw.
Tekan kao kao 😎😎😎
Have to. Only have 210Nm to climb the slope. Haha
Bro, thanks so much for your very informative videos on E39's , recently bought my dad a 2003 E39 525i, you mentioned WhatsApp E39 group, is it possible to add me or PM the group number bro, thanks so much.
BMW certainly live up to their tagline - The Ultimate Driving Machine!
Yes!
Should have engaged Steptronic/manual going up instead of automatic.
I used Sport mode. Was good enough for me la.
@@KonWaiLuen next drive up.... feel the difference..... 🤙
Great car, I have a e39 530d. Would love to fly along this slope :D
Whereabouts are you from?
@@KonWaiLuen I like that you reply to everyone :) I'm from Europe, Estonia, so Malaysia is almost impossible to get to by car, unless you have e39 diesels in there :D
Disable sticker ??????
For my wheelchair-bound father
@@KonWaiLuen u mean he is driving?
Nope. But I let my mother drive this car occasionally, and she drives my father around.
@@KonWaiLuen but that doesnt justify the sticker?
@@petemorbius3936 it's for parking.
I know that you can't expect a lot from 150hp and 1600kg but man this engine is struggling, i think you might have a problem *edit* i see it's a facelift so it's got to be 170hp
There is sufficient power from this engine. On flat surfaces, it pulls strongly enough. What it needs, is torque, particularly from low revs, to ease the climbs.
This engine is still being nursed to full health, however. Changed the water pump, a coolant hose, and the exhaust O2 sensors after this run.
@@KonWaiLuen Allright man, beatiful car btw, i've got the same only it's 3 litre diesel and it pulls good but your sounds better
Ohh.. your 3.0 diesel will make light work of the slopes!
I thought kon's vid is supposed to befamily friendly
Applying for R rating.
Nice
Should have gotten the e39 530i or at least the e39 525i
Chester Cheng totally agree, coming from owning a e46 328i and currently driving e63 630i, man that is extremely underpowered to be honest considering the fact that you full throttle at those windy roads.
roadtax very expensive with those models
I was looking for a 525, but came across this unit in this good as new condition. Too attractive to pass.
Kon Wai Luen , ya I understand that part.. happen to me before
even your camera cannot withstand the amout of G's hahahaha
Hahaha....magnet wasnt strong enough, I think 😂
The benefit of owning a 520i: you can rev higher without worrying about getting too fast 😆😆
Hahahahahaha... in my case, full throttle still no worries 😅
Minit 6:15 ? Hahahaha
OkU Sticker ... Hurm 🤔
For my father.
I feared the worst when the camera fell. The car was really shaking.
It was the camera..hahah
OKU sticker🙄🙄🙄
For my father.
