TODAY WE REVIEW & DRIVE THE VERY COOL BMW E39 528i WAGON WITH THE “M” PKG, IT’S NOT YOUR DAD’S STATION WAGON
As a sedan, the E39 5 Series was tough to beat. It had a near-perfect combination of handling, performance, and comfort.
While the 2000 E39 BMW 528i is old by the compared with the newer models, it still holds up well. All though it wasn’t as fast as its competition. However, it made up for it in other ways, especially as a very cool wagon.
As a wagon, its competition grew, as several premium performance wagons were on sale. However, despite its more practical body style, the E39 5 Series Touring was every bit as fun to drive as the sedan, just with more utility. Which is why, as enthusiasts, we love wagons.
Back in the early 2000’s some icy-cool sports wagons were introduced, from all sorts of different automakers, like Mercedes with their E-Class, Audi and their A6 models, and Volvo with its V70R, but this was not a novelty as Mercedes offered the 300D wagon back in the 80’s
From the 2001ti to the 635CSI I have always liked BMW’s and the E39 wagon is no exception.
The base E39 528i is powered by a gas 2.8 liter inline six generating 193hp @ 5,500 rpm, this is also the same engine that is in both the sedan and the wagon models.
The wagon shares the quality leather interior with its sedan complete with sport seats, wood grain interior accents, and good ergonomics.
The rear compartment continues the leather seating along with ample legroom, storage pouches, and a comfortable feel.
The rear seats have the ability to fold independently which add to the extra storage, and utilitarian appeal of a true wagon
The rear cargo area has a pullback privacy curtain to protect your belongings, resting on a nicely carpeted storage bed.
On the hood, the electric glass sunroof is tinted, and boasts a very stylish and usable roof rack.
This vehicle has the M package, with 17” BBS two-piece wheels, cool side skirts, and stylish body panels
All in all, the E 39 wagon is a very stylish, mildly aggressive cool car with a nice stance, a real enthusiast’s wagon.
