Brain: Can't imagine this cheap rubber part will be that expensive from BMW... BMW: Hold my beer.
Genuinely, one of the best cars they've done
Sooo much better with the stock wheels!! You have satisfied my inner OCD!
"You can reuse your old, worn out, rubber but I decided for a new one, because it's the right thing to do. Sometimes you want new, proper, rubber in here. I'm gonna slide this bad boy on, and then we can jump underneath, hook everything up and see how this thing feels like" - PT, 2021
One of the best builds anyone has made, kudos to you guys for making this happen, lots of effort and patience. Though, the end result is always worth it!
finally! the actual e39 m5 wheels on the actual e39 m5 wagon
Of course you know that BMW only ever made one E39 M5 Touring. So any other "M5 Tourings" are repro so you can do pretty much what you like when buidling one.
Thank you for putting the Style 65 wheels back on! The spacers and tires setup is the cherry on top!
Yes... lemon clips or spring hose clips are much better than jubilee/worm clips. They don’t fail and they exert an even sealing pressure all around, also the can expand and contract when hot and cold with out damaging the hose or stretching and then leaking... much better for slip on fuel, coolant and oil hoses... also for the manufacturer they are cheaper than jubilee hose clips.
Qualified automotive engineer 👍
This comment! Oetiker/cobra clamps are the way to go. Try to avoid worm clamps whenever possible. Uneven sealing pressure => leaks => overtightening => damage. If you use them and they inevitably leak you can try using two of them and orienting the screws/worms opposite each other.
I’ve watched this entire project and being a BMW tech that owns and E39 is such a pleasure to watch! Thanks guys!
Shared sorrow is half sorrow you mean?
While the throwing stars are absolutely awesome, I think the original wheels look much better on the wagon. The grill was also the right move!
All M5's, facelift or not have all chrome grills. Love the wagon, looks absolutely spot on with the 65's on there.
The original grilles look the best on that car, good choice going back to them 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Just a beautiful build. All the headaches are worth it when the finished project is a masterpiece. Good job guys. Looking forward to the next project.
Full love! You guys just make tha best cars videos around ♥️
I always liked the OEM wheels until I seen your throwing stars. Some of the best looking wheels ever
E34 Augment wheels can go on... the E34 M5 you've got back there!!! :)
Love that you finished building it, tested it, ripped it, and now you are still fine tuning it and taking us along! I adore this car!
I've bled slightly older BMW ABS systems using a pressure bleeder, and it worked fine. But now I just use a one-man bleeder bottle and pump the pedal. It's simpler and it works just as well. Your Dinan short-shifter rattle might only show itself in the e39 M5, due the engine's flat-plane crank, which causes funky vibrations.
The S62 uses a typical cross-plane crank.
@@adad2757
Yep, the S62 was a cross-plane engine, while the S65 was flat-plane. My mistake.
I think I still preferred the throwing stars, but man there isn't a wrong choice here. I know this hasn't been an easy build, but your dedication to getting all the details correct is impressive. You can tell from across the parking lot: this car is loved.
Loved the build. Cool model, a lot of wrenching and less talking. A car to die for!
To be honest, we had a X5 e53 once (fire started under hood), we removed everything from underneath with brakes, suspension and everything and we had a very hard time bleeding it. We ended up using the DIS with the actuators procedure to get rid of the air.
The crimping clamps apply force completely unlike a screw clamp. We have had to replace The reservoirs on 39s and e46s with lines that just never stop leaking and showed back up after a few months. The filter in the bottom gets plugged. Definitely recommend power steering flushes on this vantage of BMWs
PT you and DP hit it out of the park on the Sports Sedan Challenge. Proof positive that your pause and reconciliation of new concepts was a great choice. Can’t wait to see what’s under wraps for Speed Academy’s next build
having a fun practical daily sometimes makes all the difference. I've been daily driving my Odyssey for almost a year..... and I'm losing my mind. lolololol
Have you seen Bisi's 1000hp odyssey?
Yeah, it does - often the best drives come at unusual times, and as a petrolhead I always want to be in something sporty to take advantage! I have an S211E55 AMG. Seven seater with some V8 supercharged character.
Of course it's the period correctness but there is another factor that makes you feel that these wheels are fitting this car like a glove. It is your brain that makes you feel like this and that happens because this car is "stored" in your mind exactly as you saw it when it was firstly presented 22 years ago. It was this colour, those wheels and generally this look that made you say wow when you saw it. For the same reason we like so much an E30 M3 with the factory BBS wheels, every time we see it. There may be tons of gorgeous wheels to fit those vehicles but you'll always feel great when seeing them in their factory outfit...That doesn't happen always and with all the cars. It just happens with the cars that were awesome looking from the factory...great work as always guys.
I had the same shifter with the same problem. I was going to do the Z3 short shifter but ended up getting the Garagistic Supreme short shifter on my e28. It's way better and the adjustment is awesome!!! No rattle at all even with my single single mass flywheel conversion
Those throwing stars look so much better but I'm jealous of the build overall. Good job guys
M539 Restorations approves Style 65 on this car.
Keep it classy, keep it OEM.
The M5 wagon looks amazing and sounds. Wow, wow, wow. Original wheels and kidney grills also look the best.
Thanks for installing the absolute (IMO) finest tire on the most beautiful wheels ever made. I’v been using Conti’s (exact size as you used) on my M5 for 3 years. Love ‘em.
Grill, lights, wheels perfect. Great job!
These videos of y'all fixing the small nagging issues are great. It shows your dedication to your projects. Keep them coming.
Well done for all the choices you made(wheels, grills, etc....) but I think their is something more that you should do.All M3, M5 etc have black fabric on the roof panel and the side panels and believe me it is much much better than the beige....It certainly worth the change....Many greetings from Greece!!!!
Great video series! Love these and can't get enough!
I honestly can't decide between the two sets of wheels. They both give the car a completely different look 👍
man i love this m5 build, its really heavily influenced how i think of building cars, and how im building my car. Great job guys, you knocked it out of the park with this one
Also, when I had my E39 M5, I had to get the cluster refurb'd, the abs module reman'd, the rear view mirror replaced, fuel door actuator, and the body control module. I fixed it all and sold the car. Wish I kept it.
A friend of mine has an BMW E36 and he fixed all the BMW leaks a few years back, he dropped in a 1JZ!
Pretty awesome update! This m5 build is probably one of the best om this channel!
This is truly the ultimate car IMHO... if I had to pick one for the rest of my life it would be an E39 M5 Wagon, fantastic work as well, loving your channel!
Best wheel design and paint finish ever! Glad you finally saw the light ;)
Either set of wheels look very good on it, so just keep switching em as you feel like it 👍
Every time you make a E39 video, I groan and struggle through the video thinking to myself "no BMW, Yes Lexus!!!". This thing is a constant pain ...
For those clamps you asked about, they are just another form of clamp. They provide a better clamp force on the whole surface area of the hose, so technically, a little better. They are used more for the reason that you won't necessarily replace thise type of clamps, rather buy a new part...... I think, LoLz. We use those in plumbing on PEX piping.
Pressure bleed and do the old school pumping normally works using the pressure bleeder to help flow and keep the master cylinder reservoir full, but activating the ABS may be required as air can be trapped in the valves and valve body of the ABS module.
Almost done with my turbo e39 530it manual swap. Thanks for the series.
The episode that I waited for!
Love the Style 65!
Nice with chrome kidneys!
(Yes, M5 E39 owner)
That new grill looks way better. Congrats! It's done and done right!
I got a 1999 540i touring recently and I absolutely love the car. I want to do a full m5 conversion on mine eventually
If the rattle in the shifter is still there after more miles are clocked up its probably the shifter knob. Sometime when it is removed something breaks inside that rattles. Had that with my E46 M3. As for the halo light personally I love the oem yellow lights and to be honest I don't see the point in updating the lights to look more modern when the car itself isn't modern. I think the high kelvin output lights on older cars doesn't look right. 3000 looks good to me but I'm old and like the old school. Love the wheels. Both sets!
As a wagon owner and lover, this car really came together beautifully. Hope you get years of enjoyment from it, Pete!
Swap those hose clamps with tension clamps. Keeps a constant tension even with different temps opposed to those metal hose clamps. Reduce your chances of leaks or retightening.
This is so much fun to watch peoples having trouble
That's a proper looking ride 😍😍😍
You can also use ISTA D to diagnose the module and perform a brake bleed.
The rattle from the shifter could be residual vibration from from the driveshaft. My last shiftter sat low enough that when I accelerate the flex disc slightly makes contact. I got fed up with all the BS and went with Autosolutions. Simply the best. The oem you install will feel notchy/rubbery and eventually fall apart.
You quite literally made my dream car, same color and everything. enjoy it!!!
Awesome work and dedication. Love that you went with new / old grilles!
I use those claps for ac hoses and they are used for plumbing
Thanks for the great video. I have a 99 manual 528i sport wagon. Excellent explanation of the work. Keep up your great attitude and your wagon is dialed in. Best regards!
I absolutely love the throwing stars - including / especially the OEM silver. If you think about it, BMW did do different wheels on different body styles, notably the E36 M3 sedan and coupe (in Europe anyway, I don't know about over there).
Beautiful build! It may be the less popular opinion but I prefer the halogen angel eyes vs led. I like that there's a color difference between the rings and main beam.
Had my Umnitza leds for over 6yrs and still going strong
I love the old intro but maybe the new could grow on us! Love the BMW build and those wheels looks great awesome car channel like always!
I love this car. Def like the Type 65 wheels best, they look great in the shadow chrome treatment.
Use a vacuum bleeder on the calipers. Draws way more fluid. They are cheap and hook up to an air compressor. Best way I've found for bleeding brakes.
After all you've been through, I can say confidently that I am a Toyota/ Lexus guy! Great M5 wagon swap though
Just leaving a comment to say great job guys and to also help with the algorithm!
Pretty cool M5 wagon! Turned out nice, seems like it's all sorted now. Just need to put the coloured zip ties on the new grille and it will be perfect!
What an amazing build. Really like the finish in the stock wheels, but in the end, the 5 spokes look way better. They shouldnt, but they do. Also really glad that you choosed the chrome grill. The black one makes it look weird. What an amazing built!
You have done a great job on this wagon. One small suggestion, hit that steering wheel with some all purpose cleaner and a microfiber. Shiny leather is dirty leather. Keep up the great content!
those midnight epiphanies when you're trying to catch some sleep always save the day
You really have started loving this car, still changing the kidneys😜😜 no error light is a good feeling! Great job on the remaining points!!!! Done
I mean.. when is a car really ‘done’😜😜😜😜
Missing that rear M5 badge for full OEM perfection, nonetheless such a joy to see your work guys, the car looks amazing. Love it.
Your attention to detail is a blessing and a curse
Certainly is a labor of love!
Reverse pressure bleeders do work for that, top pressure bleeders don’t always unless you trigger via DIS.
It’s gorgeous, those wheels🔥🔥🔥🔥🔐😍
One of best builds of the M5 so far. So glad I've found and subscribed to this channel. And with stock wheels it looks simply amazing. Cheers 😊
Nice upgrades. Love the wheels, love the shifter, and great job solving the ABS lights coming on!! Love that car.
Both wheels look awesome
Flying stars, for sure, Pete.
holy smoke that opening wheel looks good
Man I loved the other wheels and black grille but still love this car either way!!
I think the problem with worm clamps is that you can over tighten them and crush the hose
Another Bonus episode of my favourite build... what's not to like. B-)) THANX guys
Funny. My F30 335 does something similar when pressure bleeding the front brakes. Using the Schwaben bleeder which is essentially the same, I usually have to crack the valve for 30 seconds or so, close it, recheck pressure in the pump, then crack it again and she starts flowing. Sometimes just a few bubbles and sometimes a ton make their way through with multiple opening/closing of the valve. This is my second BMW too and both cars did this. After a couple cycles it flows clear and bubble free though. Two valves per corner for the Brembos. I do it every year and every time it’s always the same process to get it flowing and flushed 🤷🏻♂️.
Also, when using these pressure bleeders: if you suck the fluid out of the reservoir and forget to top it off with fresh fluid BEFORE you hook up the bleeder pump, you’ll end up pumping a shit ton of air through the system before it starts flowing. Ask me how I know lol.
Look into getting a cup holder called the ultimate cup holder. Fits along side the trans tunnel and ca hold any size beverage. Love mine and use it often.
Hey,
I installed a power steering cooler using standard screw clamps and replaced the reservoir and lines with the same clamps in my e46 drift car and no leaks.
Great call on the wheels.
The chrome grill looks good
This is exactly how the car should be. Wheels, grille, shifter. All improvements
In germany we're using Gelenkbolzenschellen for the power steering hoses.
You need an E34 wagon for those throwing stars. Love the wheel, but they just don’t look right on the E39. Love this wagon. Total dream car for a wagon geek, like me.
Grills look great, and I like the wheels too! This car is sooooo good
Hell yes to the M5 wheels!
Regarding the throwing stars. I do believe they look better and as you say "less flat" in person.
But one thing that would really make them perfect in my eyes is a polished lip!
Not the easiest job now though as they're painted I guess..
Give that motive bleeder another try now that you’ve solved the leak with the clutch. I use the same unit with my e46 M3 and get good flow. I’ll occasionally do the ABS trigger if I’m swapping fluid type or feel like the pedals getting too mushy for my like.
@3:55 IMO Oetiker clamps are worth every penny on any pressurized line that you won't be removing again for a long while (and that you can get the pliers on). Only downsides to them are that they're very size-specific, are one-time use, and can be a nightmare to pry off. Second option for me is fuel-injection clamps, and then spring clamps if appropriate. I'd never use worm-drive clamps on any small line or really anywhere on a car outside of the intake tract that will never see boost. If I ever saw a pro shop use worm-drive clamps on any pressurized line, I'd legit question their competency or at least their attention to detail.
Nailed it with the star wheels , I seen you cruising it and they did look great aswell!
Yeyyyy. The best wheels are back. Just fit the best!!!
Honestly, lookin' perfect, now just enjoy it!
