Sunday, January the 30th, 2022 - 7:40 in the morning,
This video felt like a confusing creative puzzle where almost all of the pieces were the same color, but the photo on the box was full of different colors. You know what I mean?
First off, it felt somewhat ironic to bring a college dropout to a conference about the future of education. I was tempted to title the video something along those lines, but I didn't really see how it would fit into the narrative. Moreover, this was my first time at a conference. I don't know if you've ever been to a conference or what I was expecting it to be like, but I felt like we had been given a secret pass into some simulation.
One night I went out to a dinner that the event had arranged and everyone was standing around talking/networking. I was feeling tired from the long day, so I decided to find my seat and see who else I was going to be sitting around. I figured I could look up their name tags and get a headstart by doing some research on them and that perhaps that would be a good way to spend my 10 minutes before the dinner commenced. Well, I looked up the name tag on my left side and one of the first articles that popped up had the headline of "__ raised $130 Million from Bill Gates + Mark Zuckerburg for Education Startup." She was one of the many incredible people I met who were working on really ambitious projects. However, everyone I met seemed a bit pessimistic about the future; they didn't believe that governments would do anything or that they could trust anyone in power to make real change. That struck me a bit, but on the other hand, what they were optimistic about was the youth and our ability to radically shift the future.
That's stuck with me. Again, I'm not here to make any conclusions, but I do feel like it's important to discuss this. School should be fun, something we look forward to, and a place that can help us all become better versions of ourselves. I don't want to be too idealistic, but I feel like that shouldn't be too much to ask? But again, It's just such a complex issue. There are a million factors and things to take into consideration, but I'd love to hear some of your ideas in the comments. What would you do to change the education system in your country? What do you like/dislike, etc?
One of my largest takeaways from this whole experience is that there has to be a better way to approach college/higher education. It's a conversation that I've had with my friends before, but this has only further sparked my curiosity for the "college experiment" that I want to test out. That's all I'll say for now, but I look forward to sharing that adventure with you-
    See you soon,

Here is my take as a 27 y.o man: No matter which path you take, you will learn no matter what. Hard way or easy way.
The key is to THINK no matter who and where you are.
The finish line is your last breath. Then you'll see the results after that last breath.
It turns out just like the cliche saying:
Each of us is unique, don't compare too much our life to others, take our own path.

So, I will add a comment. I went to the University of Pennsylvania (Ivy League school). At that time, there was a course book, which listed allt he courses offered in a given year. I remember looking through the book just after I was admitted and finding so many courses I wanted to take. These were courses on topics THAT INTERESTED ME. Not courses I would somehow NEED in order to get a job. College for me was learning about things of interest. Where else would I find a seminar on the Russo-Japanese War or a course on Military and Politics in the Third World? If one goes to college JUST to do the requisites to get a job, that is sad. JOBS COME to those who are INTERESTING and INTERESTED. If I got good grades in university (which I did) it was because I was really eager to take the class.

Feeling the exact same way, so I'm trying to live by that philosophy! There's no logical reason why I'm studying cuneiform script/Middle East ancient history in a Northern European university. There's almost no job market. But the interest is there. The studies feel so meaningful, so much that I don't worry about a future job. That, as you said, will come by itself, in due time. For now it's enjoying and appreciating the privilege of choice. Felt good reading your comment! I often feel like I'm alone with this mindset.

I totally agree with what you are saying. Many people regard university as a place that gives you certifications to qualify for a job, but for some that's not the case. However, I think an important point to consider nowadays is the cost of going to university. Is it worth it to be paying tens of thousands of dollars each semester just to be able to take classes that 'interest you' when the internet is full of all the different kinds of content you could possibly want? I don't really know.... Of course in countries with low or no tuition there is a very different approach to what university is. I currently only pay around 100 euros to study in Germany and that is including transportation costs. I have many friends and acquaintances that do multiple majors and pursue topics that they are passionate about without having to worry about tuition. If you want to work, you can - there are many job training programs that don't require a university degree or you can just put your studies on hold for a few semesters while getting experience and earning money. So i think it really depends on where you are from and what your goals are.

    • @nexttsar

@@seongminpark7513 I agree with you. WHen I went to university we had no internet. Some schooling is way overpriced. You make many valid points. Clearly university in Europe is a better deal than overpriced ones in the United States.

@@nexttsar wow, firstly i look up to you! i always wanted to get into an ivy but i am questioning the requirement of uni now. i will ask u for an advice, u said that you take courses that interested you, but the problem is I have interest plus a talent in more than 10 things and this makes it really difficult for me to focus on one thing or just trying to understand what path I want to take in college and life. like I said I question the requirement of university but it is also very difficult to come to a place or to land on a job without a uni. what is your view on “coming to a place without uni” or “how one should fulfill their experience?”

The research of a famous Turkish historian says that the most productive and productive age of people is between 15 and 25 years. A lot of us are this age now and we spend all our time putting ourselves in school. We study lessons that we are not interested in by the system, and at the end of the day we only have an ordinary life. Hey Max,
Have you ever researched about the education system in Finland? I have been studying it quite a bit, and many people, including myself, consider it remarkable. Finnish students have consistently scored well on the PISA survey. However, students in Finland don't feel the need to "earn good grades." Instead, they desire to perform well and to find their life-long passion. Pasi Sahlberg is a wonderful advocate for Finnish education. He goes to many places around the world to share Finland's story. He is definitely worth listening to.
Just thought you may like this, if you are interested in the search for better world-wide education. Have a fantastic gap year!

"Education" has come to be synonymous with "job training", but the two are not the same. Job training produces employees, but education produces educated people, that is, people who have learned how to learn about and think about things in the world and beyond it. The question is, which of these are the colleges and universities of today actually producing?

The storytelling in this video is truly amazing and it kept me engaged for the entirety of the video. It also made me really reflect on my own educational journey and how much it has impacted my life. Currrently, I am a senior in high school and I'm just about to enter "the college world" and I can admit that Im not sure of what lies ahead. Personally, I am lucky that I have found my passion for filmmaking early on, but I cant help to think about how far I'll be able to make it, especially as a woman of color. As someone who is interested in the arts, I also feel that there is a common misconception that going to school for the arts in less valuable for the future. This honestly scares me, and makes me question my abilities and what I can provide for the world. This past summer, I was at work when a women approached me, and a conversation about college started. When I told her that I wanted to go to school for film, she immeadialy looked disappointed and told me that I should go to school for business instead. This broke my heart.

Don't write off education too soon. Yes, it may or may NOT make you rich. But, you will change as a person, and learn more about yourself. Just like travel. I'm in my late 30's and going back for 2 bachelors degrees after being a paramedic. You can expand yourself through education. And quite possibly make a living. The truth is though, like many things in life it is what YOU make of it. Wishing you luck on your journey.

I am from India. I despise the education system here, to get into college you have to sit for competitive exams, since we're a country with such a huge population, these exams are extremely competitive and suck the life out of you. These exams demand 10-14 hours of your day solving maths physics and chemistry questions.
I am an artist,i used to paint frequently before i started preparing for a competitive exam, it's sad to say its been about a year since I've picked up a paint brush.
Yes there education system sucks, but i still have hopes , not from the system but from people my age, i am still very excited about going to college in a few months.

First of all, I wanted to say that your editing skill is so AMAZING. When we talk about the college, mostly we think about the degree and gpa. But I think the most important thing is the experience. Of course, there's some experience that you can't find from any but in the class of the college, but there's still tremendously experience outside the classroom. If your job need a degree such as, engineer, doctor etc you have to get a degree. If your job didn't really require all these thing, I think you really didn't have to go to the college. College is a place where they gather people that interesting the same thing. If you need to find a friends who are interesting in same thing as you, College is not a bad choice for it. But If you think about the money to spent on those 4 years, If you can spent on travelling, starting your own shit, that would be awesome too. I'm currently taking a gap year now, I'm looking back at a last year and realized that I learned a lot of things, I'm not gonna lie, it was the most boring year that I've ever had but it was the year that I learned things most too. But I decided to go to college because in my country didn't have outside places much for learning on the things that I interesting to. But I'll really don't care on those gpa and dregree much for sure. The world is SO BIG, there's a lot of knowledge outside of the room that waiting for me to learn about! What a great work Max. This clip is one of my favourite so far. Thank you so much!

hi Max, depsite in the life there's nothing really "sure", cos all is continously moving, really I think to have understood your message. I like your way to shoot on a video your flowing of thoughts, sharing with us and keeping part you your journey called life. I have seen most of your video, starting from my passion of cars and languages but slowly I saw there were a person back to the screen we too much underestimate sometimes, and tryna understand what's your message, I really think we all are made in the same way, but also we develope in such differend mode. I enjoyed this video and part of the speech telling " we all born as artist, difference is keeping this alive". I'm 22 years old, and all these feeling you have and constantly try understand, I already have and still having. What is showable from your videos is your way to take stuff and in the same time a bit of uncertain of future that melt together and make life. My suggest is keep to be true as you are, spontaneous, but also to don't be pressed too much of it, cos only on this way you can keep take the best from yourself. In the case your choice of future will be tryna applying for college, of course remember will not be "the same" of others, because all of us can take the same road but driving it in a drifferent way, that's what make us special. You've got all possibilities to get an higher education and this will be only a good small part of your life.
keep sharing video like that, back to your camera there's always us.
    Wait you in Italy
    cheers

Hi Max! I live in Turkey. I just want to tell my story. I'm going to apply to colleges next year and I'm so excited about it. Since our university entrance exam was very difficult, I decided to go to America. Our education system consists of so many subject details that sometimes I hate school. So I improved my English and I am currently studying the SAT. In my opinion, education is very valuable and important for a person.

I believe there are many flaws in the education system in the UK! it’s way too highly pressurised and too heavily focused on exams and memory, instead of actually learning. they also expect us to learn a ridiculous amount of content making it more of a memory test. I’m hoping to study veterinary medicine at uni this september!

I wish education would no longer be a vague development but a mere talk or a plan. Do you understand. I hope and most importantly apply it right away meticulously, surely. Not only studying subjects at school, but giftedness also plays a role, a value of its own. In short, I just want to be the maximum development education. I just want the education of each country to progress, I just want to stay at the stage of development without development and fear that it will stay the same, slowly even stagnate in the country. location. I want to say more, but here we go. Very good video MAX. You are fighting in the right direction. As the right itch of education.

I can totally relate to what you're saying, Max.
I had to leave high school because my mental health was so messed up that I simply couldn't go on. During this time while I was out of school, I went through a lot; but I also learned loads of things that school definitely wouldn't teach me.
Now I'm heading to college, but the thought of "is this necessary? should i invest my time and energy on something else?" still floats around.
Oof sorry for the long text

just to add: our educational system is kind of rotten. like something that was implemented a long time ago but now it fails to work successfully.

You can’t be a bioengineer or a surgeon from traveling around the world. A lot of the hesitation about pursuing college seems like fear or entitlement.. maybe a fear of being trapped. It’s only four years… you have the rest of your lives to learn how the world works.

    • @MaxReisinger
      @MaxReisinger  2 года назад +5

I agree. Some paths require a college degree (and I'm glad they do, haha). Fear/entitlement is possible- but, I'm framing it more from the perspective of the opportunity I have right now with social media. In 4 years, that could be gone or very different. The opportunity I have now isn't guaranteed forever whereas learning will always be there. Both sides have valid points- I appreciate your perspective, cheers!

  • @vale9801

I think the most important aspect is the “pursing higher education with desire.” We should be eager to learn. However, the system certainly has flaws which prevent us from actually thriving in such intellectual settings. This is where the focus should be. How could we improve this? That is one of the biggest questions for us as the future generation. Education is extremely valuable, and we are witnesses of the caos ignorance can create. The true meaning of education scapes classroom walls, but it also showcases the next steps to build up our future’s landscape. I believe the debate should be centered towards more answers to this inquiry! with or without degree, education as primary source for human development needs to stick around :)

One of your most intriguing and philosophical videos yet, Max, and that's saying something given your previous repertoire. I'm currently a sophomore in high school, and the only thing people really see me as is a "straight A student". I seek the validation of perfect scores quite often, yet I'm always the one to criticize how test-oriented and mentally depriving the US school system can be. I confuse myself with how conflicting I can be, but I think I've found that it's (grades) the only place an introspective person, who's still a product of the system, can find satisfaction. I find myself each night staying up doing countless assignments rather than pursuing little projects and outdoor activities that I find cool, because "school takes priority". As a result, many of us neglect the things that are forced to become side hobbies and as a result never find passion. I think that's why we are so lost heading into higher education and the "real world". Most people expect me to head off to an Ivy or immediately attend college because they see my high GPA and A+'s plastered across my report card, but to me that's all just black ink on paper. Higher education has become another marketing game in the US, and puts emphasis on future professions rather than present learning/exploration. If I do choose to attend college, I hope I can go into it with the lens you've presented in this video rather than becoming another object on the assembly line of life. The fact that your gap year led you to such an opportune and eye-opening conference amazes me and it makes me happy to see that there are people out there who want to see change in the school systems just as much as I do. This video put all my thoughts into coherent words.

It’s interesting because I dropped out and long story short to build a “career” you need a degree (I am back in college). Now, I don’t think this is an educational issue. I think it is an institutional problem where the cycle of elite schools, jobs and money continues.

im in my 2nd semester of my freshman year of college and not a day goes by in which I don't question whether college is the best way to spend my time. It's a weird dichotomy: on one hand I feel so lucky to go to college and have the opportunity to further my education and social network, but on the other hand I feel like I'm limiting myself. I spend everyday going to class, studying, and eating. It's just this never ending cycle. Social connection isn't guarenteed at all, and for me it's been a bit hard making friends. So, anyway, college is weird and hard and confusing man. I don't think 4 years at the same institution, seeing the same people, writing the same types of essays, and taking the same tests is the best way to spend one's time. College just feels like a job tbh. Don't know if I'm living or just existing. But I also don't know how to "live" and not "exist" regardless of location and situation. lol. k bye.
