  • In our current society, phones and social media are often painted as an evil force against our mental health. But, what if that’s not entirely true? The consumption of information and the exchange of ideas, stories, and emotions are all core to our human experience. So, what’s the issue? Our “E-diets” are polluted with hyper-sensationalized and polarizing content, but what if used the food industry as a model to change how we consume information on the internet? And, what if art could be the metaphorical veggies for the mind? Max Reisinger is a student, content creator, and serial entrepreneur. He’s amassed over 25 million views and 500,000 subscribers on RUclips through a series of short films documenting his life with a more vulnerable lens. He is the co-founder of Creator Camp, an event based on bringing together artists, filmmakers, musicians who are making meaningful content on the internet. In addition to this, he’s the co-founder of Circle Park, a creative agency and consultancy that works with top brands like Calm. And, he sits on the creator advisory board of Thatch.co. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I have lived by this for years. I am an artist and I follow mostly artists. And yet the algorithms have changed so my feed isn’t who I follow but people I don’t even know spewing nonsense. I am at my wit’s end and I want to quit it entirely.

  • @naveed-h

The fundamental problem is the business model of these social media platforms. They sell your time and attention. Any attempts from the users of this system to change the fundamentals are not going to work. These platforms need to be regulated.
Also, you can't live without food. But you perfectly can without social media 😊

The issue is that stories monopolize peoples time and space away from actually building their own lives and living. Of course he’s going to say don’t stop using social media because he’s dependent on it he expects support rather than finding a lifestyle that empowers development and independence. Just because he wants to make stories for a living doesn’t mean that’s worthwhile time the species has been listening to stories for thousands of years and no further ahead. They don’t need stories they need their tools back.

I’m a boy fan of Max and I thought that this was a great Ted Talk that he made, and I’d wanted to say that the bigger problem isn’t just that the TikTok generation is consuming more content that’s designed to engage us, on platforms that just keep showing us more and more of what we want. It’s a painful cycle, where we won’t be able to see the true ramifications for years, and by then, it’ll be too late.

But which popular social network represents a fancy, satisfying, yet relatively healthy meal? There is no such network. Twitter, Insta, TikTok...no chance. Maybe RUclips if it dropped Shorts again and didn't force addiction on the users and really allowed you to customise the experience to avoid clickbait.
They earn money by you giving them your time and attention. Your mental health, focus, productivity is not their concern.

Completely agree, this is exactly why TikTok is too toxic to have on your phone. You can't decide what you watch and it will automatically find your weak spot which makes you end up doom-scrolling again and thus, in the end, the insensitivity touched upon in this video. Blame the platform not the content.

I absolutely agree with this, and the rise of new wave youtube. I do believe it is slightly missing out that capitalism is unfortunately what is driving the negative effects of social media and consumption. Advertising and algorithms design to get us to keep scrolling is endemic to the desire for profit. If we are serious about talking about consuming art which is creatively nourishing, thoughtful, and meaningful we must address that this cannot be fully realised under our current economic system

That makes sense on why you have an inquisitive mindset. Your mother is a French history teacher, which is influential and maybe genetics 🧬 too. But I understand, there needs to be a filter with social media. However, I like to balance my social media dosage with entertainment and mind stimulation topics too. We need a break from learning and serious topics sometimes. I love your speech and it’s ok to have an opinion. It’s how we grow. 🌱🌱

It is funny he uses food labels as an example of what we need for social media. But food labels do not work. They never worked. People do not get thinner as populations in countries which have had excellent food labels for long time. Knowledge isn't a problem. Addictive design is. Both in food and in social media apps. The addictive elements would have to be cut out of the app design, and that would lower the profits you make them by wasting hours and hours on their ads in their app.
It is as idealistic as saying "let's choose healthy foods", and it will fail as spectacularly as that advice does.

"Imagine you go to the doctor with a stomach ache and they tell you to NOT eat to solve the problem."
What a brilliant analogy to put this into perspective! Max, if by any chance you may read this, I strongly encourage you to read or watch The Hunger Games by Suanne Collins. Funnily enough, Collins got the idea for the book from channel surfing between footage of the Iraq war and game shows, similar to your own experience with the consumption of cat videos and Ukrainian war death tolls. From this experience, Suzanne created the Hunger Games: a world where children of different communities are pitted against each other in a battle to the death. Worst of all, the event is televised for enjoyment. Brilliant talk, Max! Certainly, food for thought.

I think that the opinion of psychologists about desensitization would do well to remember we had large scale desensitization for military propaganda, racism, sexism, abuse, and other institutions that were rampant before the modern era. The modern person has to be at least somewhat able to handle the mass of tragedy and the human mind invented dissociation ages ago. It's asinine to me now that this is an everyone problem we as a society are up in arms.

But what if arts become a fastfood content? with the only goal to consume & earn always more money with advertisings? This is what social media are doing. They erase the attention of people to spend more time on the platform with more content in a short time. And we know too much good food become as dangerous as bad food. Don't think art is the solution if the support that shows it is corrupt.
