It's Midnight in Amsterdam and I just pressed publish on this video. First off, I hope that you're doing well.
Secondly, this video was never supposed to see the light of day. I was planning to scrap the footage because I felt too sad to film for most of the trip and there wasn't a lot of video to work with. However, Instead of skipping to a more "fun" video like the next one in Argentina, part of me feels obligated to share the emotional context as I was heading into that trip. A gap year isn't just all smiles and traveling around the world- I don't want to perpetuate that image. So, in an effort to document and share an accurate depiction of my life as I'm growing up, this episode hopefully sheds light on the other side of what normally gets kept in private.
    Much love,
    Max

it’s alright max, our whole generation is going through the same crisis. i failed my first year of university, we all need to just take our time. please know you are able to talk with me or any of your friends/family if you feel bad, it’s great that you are able to express all these feelings on this platform instead of bottling up these emotions. we all are having to figure out ourselves during adulthood you aren’t alone and you aren’t a failure. keep being you Max.

Crisis? What about those who were teenagers in 1941 who were then not asked but commanded to take up a rifle and storm the beaches of Normandy? What about those in the 1950’s who were shipped off to Korea or those shipped off in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s to the jungles of Vietnam. Your generation is not going through a crisis other than a crisis of having been placed in a cocoon by your parents generation who thought by sealing you in bubble wrap it both physically and intellectually it would make things ok. It doesn’t. Yours is the most isolated and insulated generation in all of history, and what it proves is that responsibility and requirements are what makes life meaningful and robust. Get out and get to work, and I promise you, you will find that life makes much more sense.

I learned something really important from this video: " I'm not alone ". We are just a bunch of teenagers who trying to live in diffirent countries, all of us have diffirent goals and huge dreams, on the other hand this world just not skipping us. It start teaching us so many things and maybe we dont even know " who are we ? "yet. But everything is temprory, right ? Even this pressure on us !! We need to support eachothers and ourselves. We got this. Also thank you for sharing this video, it feels like a friend of mine just express his feelings, ı just wanted to be there and having a conversation with you.
    Ps: You're doing fine :)

I don’t normally comment on RUclips videos but man, this video gave me so many mixed emotions.
First of all, it takes a lot to share the things that you are struggling with on the internet. Being vulnerable and so personal online isn’t something you see from many creators and you deserve so much credit for this. I’m sure there are hundreds of people that think you are living this amazing life because you drive an awesome car, travel the world, etc. It just goes to show that everyone is fighting a battle that you know nothing about.
You have so much going on in your life right now, even if a lot of it is created in your own head. Stuff you may not even know how to put into words. It’s overwhelming I know, but that’s because you love yourself and you hold yourself to such high standards. You’re just figuring it all out man, and you will. I know it’s tough but try not to be so hard on yourself. You’re doing better than you realise. We’re all doing better than we realise.
One thing is for sure though, you are not a failure. If you’re a failure, the rest of the world is too.
It’s awesome to chase stuff, and to want more out of your life, but if you try to chase perfection you will never be satisfied. It’s so important sometimes to just take a step back and be present in the moment. Not easy when you’re so lost in your thoughts, I know.
You may not be where you want to be in life right now but you’re also not where you used to be.
We’re all in this together just riding the wave that we call life. There will be ups and downs :)
We’re all here with you every step of the way brother.

Hi Max, this video is important for you on so many layers, and so valuable for those who are open to the insights.
Firstly, we need more young men to be open and honest about the ups and down of mental health and even having panic attacks. Your openness and transparency will be an inspiration to so many young men who suffer in so many relatable ways, but haven’t been exposed to the language of feeling sad, anxiety, panic, depression and the various other forms that can impact us mentally.
Secondly, and I am much older, but one of the things that still comes up in my own therapy is that of being a perfectionists. I am actually glad that you haven’t posted your gap year videos each week. I am still struggling with other people’s exceptions as I interpret them to create pressure on myself. Your Gap Year is actually for you, and not for us. Feel free to let us go, so you can complete this journey for yourself and those you want or need to be with. If in the rest of the year we see something, that would be a bonus for us, but not a need or expectation. My perfectionism has caused me much harm over my life.
There are other things I could add, but I think I will finish with a comment about why I disagree with the title of this video. It is not possible to fail a gap year. Even if you did nothing (and you haven’t) and thought that was a waste of a year, downstream there is reflection and learning. My son, in Australian/Commonwealth countries tradition of Gap Year spent his time in the UK. There were major problems, he had to make all sorts of decisions about where an how he was safe. He change schools to work in (which wasn’t the exception) and even though the second one was better, there were still traumatic things he needed to navigate.
Some of the growth and development from a GAP year are immediate, some take some years or even more to realise.
You can’t fail this year. Go, be for and with yourself as your first priority.

Max, Thank you for having the courage to post this video. Yes, you are indeed growing up. All things happen for a reason and you are learning things that can only be learned by experience. I would say that this gap year is going to benefit you for your entire life. Your are learning more about yourself and adult responsibilities so NO! You have NOT failed your gap year. At the end of your gap year I think you will be far ahead of your peers who took the more traditional route and started higher education right after High School. You will be a better student, if that is the path you choose, for the time and energy you have invested in yourself. Don’t be so hard on yourself for not posting as often as you have wanted to. Everyone of us has set goals that we did not meet at least (and probably more than) once. Think of it as a learning experience.
I am looking forward to following your trip to Argentina.

Max, my suggestion is to look closely at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs thinking about not just how you fit into it, but how the world does. You live in unbelievably prosperous times for some like here in the US. But such times are a brief part of history. You may have heard of affluenza, and I would think about how such an affliction is an inevitable manifestation of wealth without purpose. What I would then suggest is thinking about how to perhaps burst your own bubble a bit. You are traveling and “experiencing cultures,” but think about it. What does that mean, and why is it important, and why are you picking certain cultures and not others? Could you be making choices that simply reflect you? So here’s a challenge. Would you consider going to work in a coal mine for a month? Or what about working on a framing crew framing houses for a time. Or maybe working on a farm in a remote area of the south where you might be doing very hard work. I suggest these because I think you will find more meaning in hard physical work than anything you can experience by visiting cultures. Just a thought from decades of experience with young guys just like you.

And to be honest, I've never really been on my own as I'm taking a gap year before, it's hard to get control of myself. But besides that, I also have time to really work on the thing that I truly love. If I didn't take a gap year, I might be stuck with the thing that I didn't want to go for it for my whole life. Just one year and compared it to your whole life. I also learned a lot of things which really important to me from a gap year. So without a gap year, my life would be so fxxx up. I wish everything will goes well for you and Huge respect for this amazing journal clip, Max.

You are so brave to put out your raw feelings, you’re so so brave!
You can just skip to the good part and show people the fun you had, but you chose to make this video by reflecting on your feelings and our your heart out, I know it must be very hard but this means a lot to people of your age, like me.
I’m completing my grade 12 in a month and plan to take a gap year as I haven’t performed to a remarkable extent to get a seat in my dream college, I plan to explore and build my interest in the fields i enjoy.
I just want to say, you putting your feelings means a lot and makes me feel it’s okay for our feelings to waver sometimes too💕🥰

@@outresru7751 I decided to take it because I apply to an engineering in the first place, but then I realized that I didn’t like it, I didn’t want to stuck with it for my whole life. So just one year to figure things out are really worth for me. I found out later that I really love arts, which the things that I try to avoid for my whole life because of the way that society looks at arts. “How are you gonna make money from it” “It’s not secure” bla bla bla. You must have a really strong goal, don’t hesitate or you might lacking the discipline. Because when you taking a gap year, you’re on your own, no one will force you to do things, so you have to get control of yourself. It’ll be damn boring for sure because the past 12 years you used to go to school and have a great time there, but when you’re talking gap year there will be not much friends left as you used to have. The worst part is when you’re on instagram stories and watching your pals have a great time with their new friends. Gap year is really hard for me but I think it’s essential, without it I might didn’t found myself and I might stuck with a thing that I didn’t like for my whole life, it’ll be a f*** nightmare fasho. Gap year is not a waste of time but it’s up to you how did you will take care of it. Good luck

It takes so much to be real on the internet, max. Takes so much to be vulnerable online and in that spectrum, you've already won. This is what a real creator is. Portrayal of the good and the bad, the yin and the yang. Yes,you weren't consistent in posting vids, but that's life. It must have been real hard for you in the past 3 months or so,but hey.. you're still Here. You're still our Max. This video made me admire you even more than before. Thank you for keeping it real.

I took a gap year in 2013, and the most challenging part about it as I can remember is to accept the fact that my friends already have their new lives, but I stayed at home, waiting for my reality which is I don't know yet it will end up good or hmm u know nothing's the same after all. But the storm will pass by anyway, I know it. thx to my parents who supported me back then so that I can have my never-dreamed kinda university life, which I mean that year was awesome. What comes after is better, Max. You have done a great job so far. Just keep goin' and see, you'll look back in 5 years later that what you've been through was just all right. :))

Hey Max , good to see you ,
Don't question yourself or your life too much , like you said you are gathering data , to spread it around you , that data you gathering will make you who you are . Don't search just enjoy , true having a gap year is great and also hard , but it's the way you took , if you didn't you would of had a different experience but not that rich of knowledge .
Anyway , don't question yourself too much , acceptation is the key .
Be safe , and hope to see you soon ✌️

Hey, I love that you share this stuff with us. I mean, i really don't like to see you suffering, but I really like and admire you and it makes me want to know how you're feeling. And I know that when you show yourself happy, you'll probably be happy indeed. Besides you're so smart and has a very positive orientation in life, your reflections are really helpful. And don't worry about the weekly video failure. So much happened in your life, inside you and about you, and in the end I think this year, hard as it has been, will be more important for you and your personality than it would be had it passed smoothly and the videos goal had been fulfilled. As for us your fans, of course we would like to have your "company" on a weekly basis, I know I would. But we can deal with you absence, particularly knowing that it's for good reason. I admire you now even more than I used to before your gap year, I think you're dealing well with your problems. It doesn't mean you are crushing them, that wouldn't be normally possible. But that you are being resilient and growing with them and still being productive and having new ideas (like staying in the houses of fans during the trips, kinda scary I guess, but really nice idea)

You've learnt an art form of creation, and just because you didn't post every week like you intended to, it doesn't mean the experiences didn't happen or that you failed. Learning the art of balance is a skill that takes an entire lifetime to master. You're kicking yourself for not learning that skill, yet you're only 18. You still have so much time. You're doing great things. Keep evaluating your internal emotions and creating, and a path will become apparent.

Max, dawg, just take a breath and live life. What comes, comes, what goes, goes. At the end of the day, it is what it is and sometimes you just can’t do anything about it. So just breath, smile, and just live man, and enjoy it because life is short. I mean look at you, your 18 now already. Sure have a direction and goals and stuff but sometimes just chill and live life man. Don’t stress, and if you are worrying whether or not your growing or not, lemme tell you something, if there’s anything I’ve seen on your channel in the past few months it’s growth. You fully express yourself through these videos and I’m proud of you for it, and guess what, that’s growth right there. So don’t worry man, you’re amazing and you inspire me everyday. I’m not even saying that to make you feel better or anything, I’m just saying that cuz it’s just the truth. You are one of my biggest inspirations and will always be one.

Wow the ending of the video was insane. The way you ended it on the note of feeling alive, but not going into detail about it, just allowing the definition of that “aliveness” to be open to the interpretation of the audience’s perspective. Like i literally sat up and started clapping. Like i should’ve paid to see that. I even said, if he ends it on that note…and you did, and it was just so astounding to me.

The thing about growth is that you can't be happy with who you are at the moment, but instead with the person you are working to become. Once you realize that then you will be more at peace with the person you are now bc you know that version of you is evolving to become a more true version of yourself. Change is slow, growth is inevitable, and it never stops completely. You are already a truthful, compassionate person you will continue to become a more fine tuned you

I personally failed my first year at college…I felt like I didn’t get that time to adjust and create the foundation of my life…I forced myself to go to school because during my first year of my original gap year Covid happened and I was trapped inside. I wish I could change it but after this failure of my first year, I am happy to say that I am finally taking my gap year!!! I am so excited to experience the things I wanted to originally and change into who I want to be…it gives me anxiety being alone and taking a non traditional route but once you hit rock bottom, the ONLY way it up…even if it’s one step forward you are still taking steps!

    Hi Max,
I'm just discovering this video today, and I hope you're doing well (from the following videos, it looks like you are). First of all and for all, there is no failure until you decide to do it. And from what I can see, there are none that you have done.
I'm glad you took a year off. It's an important time for me to realize with enough maturity what the world is like and decide what you want to do... or not.
You mentioned that your New Year's resolutions were the same as last year's, and it's like you haven't made any progress... Guess what, no one is asking you to have resolutions, and no one is asking you to make them in one year. You have your whole life to make them, that's a loooooong time, right? You're 18 years old, you're still in your 70s. Use them.
Look at what you've accomplished in the last few months. Not what you haven't done. Life is not about succeeding at every project you set out to do, but about navigating between projects and stepping out of your comfort zone. Some will fail, some will win. And you will learn from all of those projects, and keep moving forward, at you own pace and time.
Look at the great videos you've made... are they so bad that you failed? Stay on the positive, Max. And keep doing what's important to you. You're an amazing guy, and having doubts is normal, and it helps to move forward, and accept that in retrospect, you already did a great job.
Ca va aller, ne t'inquiète pas. Tu as le temps.

I loved your truly representation of what mean growing, and what it is for you this moment, crying next to a camera show to all of us of much mature you really are, and no, not all moments are fun. Take your time, exploring, discovering, UNDERSTANDING, even if this means share a bit less as quantity, but is quality what we and you like. Take some periods just for your person to take a bit of air, and give yourself some tie, without any thoughts. NO, youre are not failing your gap year, your channel is fine and everything, that's just a moment of the entire process. Glad you shared with us your moment, this mean you really care us. Beautiful, Max. Keep it all up. Feeling like you're doing things wrong or not feeling exactly right is ALL part of the path. It's all part of finding the better way. You're not failing; you're alive. Failure is a part of being alive. Like happiness is as well. Like every emotion. So long as you don't stop trying to figure things out day by day, there's no wrong. Additionally, configuring one's purpose is usually a grueling process. I am very optimistic about your ability to handle said process(whatever form that may take as none of us can know until we look back in hindsight) and about your attitude already preparing you for whatever life is guiding you towards. It's not supposed to be easy... it's supposed to be rewarding. But, part of me tells me you have that knowingness ingrained in you. Keep being Max Reisinger... he's got your back ;)

Since the very beginning we are so ingrained in our mentality that we must complete something by the end of year, no one really teaches you after school that it’s gonna be way more different than what it is to take exams & move to next grade in school. Hence why, we think that every year something must be done and we must move to the next thing, always. We are not adapted to have unchecked boxes at the end of the year but when we see those boxes we feel horrible, angry, loser, terrified of our future and that needs to stopp. This is messing so badly w our mental state.
Someone should have told me that it’s okay if you don’t accomplish anything by the end of the year if you’re enjoying the process. Outcome is not important as it’s gonna pop up one day or the other, what’s important is to have clear idea of what I’m pursuing and where am I heading to and is it something I enjoy or not.
Sometimes unchecked boxes are okay… they are not even that worthy to mess w my peace of mind.
