Max you are right on track, you have made some very good observations about college education today. First let me introduce myself, I'm a 70 year old guy that stumbled on you channel and my career was not the usual/normal one for my generation. I went to college to pursue an accounting career that my father thought was the wise route to go. And I went along because he was footing the bill, that is what my generation did. My real passion was photography, which I did followed in college by working for campus newspaper, yearbook and photographing historic artifacts for the campus museum. Needless to say my grades were not top tier, but what I learn photographically was fantastic. It paved the way for my photographic career which I enjoyed for about 20 years as an evidence photographer in Michigan and later in Colorado. I did eventually get my Bachelors Degree after going to three schools; Michigan State University, Rochester Institute of Technology and finally finishing at University of Michigan. It my sound impressive but my grades were not fantastic, but during my career nobody ever ask me for my GPA or degree. They just looked at what I produced, that along with contacts I made along the way were far more important. So my advice would be follow your passion, but moderate it with your head and common sense.

Appreicate you sharing these stories, Dan!
Totally agree - what you produce/who you know is a larger factor in "getting to where you want to be" rather than grades alone.
Sounds like you've had a wonderful and adventurous life and career!
      Cheers,

Once again, this was absolutely fantastic. It’s really inspiring to see someone my age who’s going out there and doing amazing things!
I wanted to say that as someone who’s been homeschooled/unschooled/worldschooled for my entire life, I definitely relate to what you said about how it feels like people are programmed to simply make it through school, and how it consumes their entire life. It’s sad honestly, and I see it a lot. I really admire how you’re looking at college, and not letting it stop you from achieving your goals, but rather using it as a learning experience and looking at it with a completely different, more self aware lense. You’re truly an inspiration Max.

I agree with you about the education system. Instead of really learning, one is more focused on just trying to pass the next exam and write the next paper, with lots of stress over grades and passing all of the classes, fear that if you fail you won't get the degree and be stuck with overwhelming debt that you can't afford. I managed to survive and graduate with honors but felt lacking in what I actually learned, and not even working in the field that I got a degree in.

as a college kid with four exams in physics and calculus within the span of three days this week, this video was much needed. it's truly amazing what you are doing in the world at this age. like you mentioned, I feel like most of us are just out here trying to get by, but life (and college) is sooo much more than that. it's cool to see somebody breaking the typical college mold, it makes me wonder how I can too.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m a senior in high-school rn and graduation is approaching so quickly. these past 4 years have been so hard on me mentally, mostly because my relationship with education is so damaged. Its like a toxic relationship that you can’t really escape, because that’s just how society is. I am scared that college will be the same way. This video helped me to realize that in the end I am the one in control of my education. Not my teachers or a grade or a status. I honestly have so much to say but i’ll save it for my journal😭. Once again, thank you Max :))

Max, this video brought back lots of memories of my own college experience. As an undergrad I used to say repeatedly that "I wasn't going to let college get in the way of my education." I was in the Chicago area and there were just so many opportunities I didn't want to miss. The Chicago "El" was basically across the street from my dorm and I would make time nearly every week to go downtown to hear the Chicago Symphony or something else that would push my horizons. I basically did the same thing in Grad School and I loved every minute of it. I was lucky to have had some fantastic professors who were very understanding of my desire to branch out beyond the classroom. I didn't really sacrifice getting good grades to allow me to explore other things. I was glad I did! :D

Another really inspiring piece, Max. Love it. College was the absolute worst time in my life because I was so caught up in academics and finding a good job - just like you described. I almost want to say that I wish I could have watched this video 4 years ago, but the truth is that even my bad experience in college helped me learn and changed me for the better. Now, I'm in law school - which SHOULD be an even more rigorous academic experience - but I'm doing a much better job at striking a balance. I'm making friends, traveling, and working on side projects that I never would have considered college. Your point is extremely well taken, and it makes me really happy to imagine someone in my position 4 years ago watching this and actually making a change as a result. Keep it up!

Okay I finally had the time to come back and watch this video.. I feel what you're saying about focusing only on getting from point a to b, and it being an endless cycle.. somehow it was drilled into us to just keep going, to do one thing, in order to be able to do the next thing, so it can lead us to the next, and I'm just honestly so, so tired of that. I'm 24 years old, and I'm already tired. Because all I can see laid out for me is that. But I don't want it to be that really, I don't know how, but I want it to be about my friends and about time we spend together and adventure, and I want that to be my life and my priority, enjoying experiences and living and feeling and creating and I just don't know if it's possible when, really, some days all I can think of is that I need a job, and I need money, I need to fix my CV and I'm constantly, constantly looking for the "next thing" needed. I can't help but think that, since we're all thrown into this world knowing really nothing at the core of it all, it's only fair we get to enjoy it. I grew up thinking I needed to be special in some way relating to success, to do something great, but now... now I just want to have a great time, and I don't want to be special in that way anymore. I just want my time to be special. Yikes sorry for the unwarranted rant, it's been on my mind.

This seems like such a refreshing college experience. It's alot different from what I'm experiencing in electrical engineering 😂. While i agree with most of your points, i think some people just inherently have more "work" to be done. Im only a junior in EE, but I have more work, personal projects, labs, technical clubs, studying, than i can ever hope to achieve in a day, but it's something i love doing. Its just really refreshing seeing other perspectives of the college experience. For now, i'll live vicariously through you 😂

  • @chowchowdog-ux5wz

I really appreciate the way you articulated college experiences. In the past several years, I tried to fit in and were driven exhausted by competing with others in order to get better grades and better-paid jobs later. I'm not brave enough to escape from this route because I have no idea what to do with my life besides the conventional module. But I'm trying to figure out the career to dedicate to. You can't be more true about the purpose of college, which is to explore more about both yourself and this wild world, to gain knowledge either inside or outside class, and find you own way to lead a meaningful life. And great film as always!

As a full-time student who does streaming and my other stuff during the weekends or the week most of the time, School life needs to pause after I graduate. What Max said is true "School doesn't feel like school."
I've always had this in mind since I can see it through the 'interested' in studying. Someone of us steps into school for a degree, to find or get a better income job when sometimes we forget that our mental and physical health also matters. Even in work life or whatever we do, we always feel "busyness" and forget that it is "okay" to take it slow and have a break.

That’s when something clicked for me, and it was like I’ve been a little more awake in my life decisions ever since. And so I wonder if going to high school in France as an American had a similar effect on you.

Yes! Living in France took me out of what I like to call the metaphorical conveyor belt or assembly line that society often constructs for us. It's not neccesiallry and evil or bad thing, but it often prevents us from thinking for ourselves. Traveling and experiencing other systems opens to your eyes to other paths and ways of approaching life! I think you're spot on there

College were for me the best years of my life. Not necessarily the happiest, but the best in terms of opening my mind and forging lifelong friendships. For other people I know, it was a miserable experience. I guess this person at the outset put it best: “College is what you make of it.” All the best!

It struck me when you were talking about the amount of studying you have to do to get good grades. There is a British film called The History Boys and it perfectly sums up the challenge of learning to pass exams against learning for the love of learning. The British element might be challenging but I highly recommend it.

Max…fantastic video…I don’t entirely know how to describe your video style, but I sense a bit of an old-world French flavour towards your videos. I think you’re right about school, where I had recently just graduated from Rutgers University, I’m currently ruminating about my experience there…what did I really learn? Did I learn to think or to conform? What if I didn’t pursue college, how different would my life be? I keep thinking about how John D. Rockafeller helped found the Department of Education, and how this had seemed altruistic at first…this turned out not to be the case though as demonstrated by the quote “I don’t want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers”. Education lets you learn, but not grow which means that just sticking to education purely won’t let you grow as a person. I think you hit it head on when you mentioned how you can learn through alternate methods instead of just learning from school…the world is full of different people, different experiences and different connections to be made.

I like the part you said that it's a mutually beneficial relationship between learning outside and inside of school. I feel excited if I suddenly realize the connection of what I learn from school and outside of it. Now I feel like spending some time walking around where I live, but I think I am confined to the frame of the school system......maybe I should skip the class?😀

Yes! I don't reccomend skipping class unless you really need to, but there are many ways to explore outside of school as well (:

dude , u really get the point. Italian high school (which i experience everyday ) really wants u to be 100% every single day you spend in the class...so students see weekend as an escape to a stressfull reality. in my opinion , this happens 'cause learning is not seen in the way it should be seen : not revising things without getting to know what they mean , but trying to internalize concepts. That' s how i keep on goin; otherwise , everything becomes hell.
    thx for sharing ur experience!

Hey Max, I really enjoyed this video. I am also a freshman in college but feel a similar "stuckness" that you alluded to. I have been reevaluating if my current school is really best for me. I put myself in a place where school is a 24/7 ordeal, and I have made all the things I love inaccessible. While I am appreciative of the opportunity to attend a well-regarded school (University of Rochester), I am ready to take the leap to attend a "worse" school that will allow me to live and learn outside of the confines of my school's campus. After this year I am going to transfer to the University of Vermont where I will be able to hike and cross-country ski, both of which bring me the happiness and fulfillment that I am lacking.

If learning is about to getting knowledge of something that you didn't knew before, yes, it can be from work/life experience, but it can also be from college. Sometimes we are so full that we despise the honeycomb, it is not that is bad learning from other places, but is nice to remember that a honeycomb is still honey; So even if it's less than you usually take from life, apreciating something that is good still, can make you lose less than you would if not remembered that...
