The Big Lebowski is a film in which several interesting plots attempt (and fail) to attach themselves to the main character. The story itself is virtually unimportant, as the tale seems content to stand on the attitudes of the characters, rather than on any hero's journey.
I’m surprised that you don’t recognize any of the actors, cause it’s absolutely packed with acting royalty, from top to bottom. Pretty much every role was played by a famous, highly regarded actor.
Trivia: The reason Walter keeps telling Donny to "shut the fuck up!" is because Steve Buscemi's character in Fargo (another Coen brothers movie) wouldn't stop talking.
it was about the 7th time I rewatched I noticed Jackie Treehorn's thugs (the rug peeers) swap shirts between the first and second time they visit the Dude. Why? I dunno. But it's another easter egg.
This was a Coen Brothers movie. They make very quirky movies. You should watch some of their other movies such as "Oh Brother Where Art Thou", or "Fargo", or "Raising Arizona."
Fun bit of trivia: The clothing the Dude wears in the movie is just shit from Jeff Bridges' real closet. Apparently one of the Coens (I forget which) saw him in that kind of clothing when he came in at some point and decided they wouldn't be able to improve on that with a costumer and just ask Jeff to wear what he'd usually wear to the set, though obviously with what was in use temporarily there for continuity and reshoots and stuff.
Can't wait to see the jellies again, LOL. They crack me up. And I just love that when the production team for the film were trying to come up with Lebowski's wardrobe, they actually went to Jeff Bridges' house and pulled those things out of his closet.
What I find funny When Mr. Lewboski is by the fire place giving his monologue the dude leaves and the music is still being played faintly in the back meaning Mr.Lebowski added the music for dramatic affect lol
Some people (myself included) like to listen to relaxing "background" music in their home -- instead of having the TV or radio on. Believe it or not. 😉
"The Dude Abides." "That Rug Really Tied The Room Together." "All The Dude Wanted Was His Rug Back. I'm Not Greedy. It Really....Tied The Room Together."
Extremely weird sidenote: I'm a pretentious hobby bartender; there's this really great bar in Chicago called "the Aviary", and in their recipe book they have this drink called "Another Caucasian, Gary". The drink is an elaborate variation on a white Russian, and the last step in the recipe is just "to really tie the drink together". Basically: I love it when I see Lebowski references everywhere :)
This is one of my all time favorites. It has inspired multiple festivals and even spawned a religion. This movie has so many layers that it should be viewed multiple times. It’s a comedy on the surface but underneath is a deeper more philosophical look at life. The world is insane and unpredictable and all a Dude can do is abide.
The Coen's concept of the movie was a gentle hippy guy (based on a friend of theirs) who was thrown into a Raymond Chandler-esque film noir private detective mystery. That's why the plot is so dense. It's a lot to take in on a single viewing. You did great. +1 subscriber!
I love it! Especially Centane aghast and mouth agape whenever Walter is allowed to make a major decision . . about anything! Also, she doesn’t know who Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, and Steve Buscemi are??? She calls them “new faces?” Actually though, It could be considered a compliment, these actors, especially Bridges, often disappear into their roles.
What? I can't wait. This is with LotR Movies surely the one i watched the most. At least 30 times or more, not counting the reactions to it. I hope you enjoyed it as i am always. Really a film, you have to watch a few times.
your reaction was pretty much exactly the same as mine when i saw this the first time. I just thought it was really bizarre but with some really funny parts here and there. it wasn't until I watched it again years later that I appreciated it fully. this is one of those movies that gets better and better the more times you watch it
I like how Walter always tells Donnie to shut up. 😂 It's a nod to the fact that Steve Buscemi's character in Fargo just will not shut up. Not a spoiler btw.
The video producer reading the magazine at Maude's place at 24:44 is David Thewlis who later played Professor Lupin in the Harry Potter movies. Always fun to watch someone see the Dude for the first time. :)
I love your movie reactions! I’ve been watching for a long time now, and I think the hardest you made me laugh was at the end of green mile when you said, “I felt so cute at the start of this video” I think that you should watch three very important films: Annie hall, magnolia, and Brazil. Right up your alley for humor and emotional depth. Keep it up!
One of the funniest movies of all-time, I love it. Speaking of rabbits, you should watch "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"; it's funny and also one of the most elegantly written movies of all-time. Its sense of fun and silliness reminds me of "Back to the Future"; its top-to-bottom perfection reminds me of "The Princess Bride".
One of the funniest films of all time in my opinion. Makes me think of my niece though. Only five years younger than me so more like a little sister. Saw this in the theater with her when we lived near each other in Seattle and hung out regularly. We laughed so hard. Unfortunately she went NC with our family 20+ years ago. Also I used to work graveyard and on Friday night/Saturday morning we had an hour+ of down time after our one hour lunch. Enough time to watch a movie from 2-3 am in the break room. This was probably the one that went over the best along with Old School.
@@pavanb6412 Doubtful. I don't think about her often. She failed to come to either of my parent's funerals. I mostly feel bad for my sister, as my niece is her only child by birth. Thanks, though.
when he nailed the board to the floor in front of his door it was an attempt to lock the door with the chair. sadly he forgot that his OWN door opened out so his improvised lock didnt work for shit. first time i seen that scene i cracked up so much. surprised you didnt get the joke
And the guys that opened the door didn’t even have the decency to trip over the brace, so that at least The Dude got something out of the effort. Well, I guess he and Maude both got something out of it, after he tripped over it. So there’s that.
No one ever picks up on the Dude calling the ferret (a weasel) a marmot (a rodent). This sets up the whole "park ranger" discussion at the bowling alley. I always thought these were two of the best gags in the movie. A lot of women don't really get this flick. I watched it with an ex-lady friend once and the only thing she laughed at was the Dude dropping the roach on his junk. Paraquat is a broad-spectrum herbicide (kills all plants) that was used to aerial spray dope fields back in the '60s. If you ingest any it turns your lungs into paper bags and the only cure is a transplant. Some growers sold their dope after it had been sprayed, with predictable results.
I can’t believe you noticed that we never actually get to see The Dude bowl. It’s the best trivia fact about this movie, and I didn’t notice for years.
awesome reaction! i found out that the more i watch the movie, the more i appreciate things about it. the casting is flawless and that generates so many incredibly great moments and quotes. yes, i like the movie.
There has been a lot of speculation that Donnie is just a figment of Walter's imagination, and that the Dude just plays along with Walter's delusion for the sake of their friendship. Donnie may have been someone that Walter served with in the Army who was killed in Vietnam. It's hard to catch any scene where the Dude is directly talking to Donnie.
You may want to rewatch the mortuary scene. I think it could be plausibly argued that the mortuary visit was all in Walter's head, and that the Dude was just humoring him. Even the Dude's anger over being covered with the supposed ashes of Donnie was more like someone who knew the ashes really came from a barbecue pit than actual human remains.@@0okamino
There's also the part in the closing scene where Gary says says "Sorry to hear about Donny." It would have made sense for him to say that to Walter if he didn't actually exist, but not so much to the Dude...
Yes, you make a good point. But taking this line of thought to the extreme, maybe Gary was telling the Dude that he was sorry that Walter has lost his imaginary friend. I can only think of one scene where the Dude comes close to directly addressing Donny, and that is when Donny is walking away from the bowling alley and the Dude yells out "goodbye" to him. And even then, I think it could be construed that the Dude was just humoring Walter's delusion.@@Blutteufel

This film is basically a quote fest occasionally interrupted by bowling and guns. It actually didn't do well at the box office, which makes me love it all the more. "You're out of your element Donny!"
"Imagine writing checks instead of just paying normally." "He's a millionaire that's why he's writing checks..." FML, This Zoomer is a goldmine already.
It's actually different for people! Right hand origin is from Eastern Orthodox Churches, so if you're religious it's quite normal on right hand! Almost all of Europe has "adopted" that belief, so The Dude could be religious 👀🤍
But other than the Cowboy character, did you enjoy the other actors’ performances? I think the actors who portrayed The Dude, Walter, Donnie, Maude, Jesus, and Brandt were all tremendous! 📹💙😍
The board The Dude nailed to the floor wasn't meant to be a trap. It was just meant to brace the chair used in an earlier scene against the door to prevent it from opening. In reality, it would have worked. Doors swing into a room (at least in the USA. I can't speak for anyone else) for two reasons: First, swinging outwards would impede the flow of traffic, causing a fire hazard and countless injuries from being smacked by doors. Second, the hinges are on the inside, preventing someone from breaking in by just pulling the pins out and taking the door off the hinges.
Really great watch! She really wasn’t too bad. It was her first movie job. No budget. She said for car scenes she was holding the mic between her knees. And look who she working with! 😆 That and that dope, but weird song in the bar I loved. Ha!
Good news is that Jeff Bridges has announced there is a sequel on the way!! Sam Elliott is the cowboy, and also the narrator of the film! He is the dot over the I in this movie! Oh and Walter LOVES Donnie! These three are best buds... They just have different roles in the chemistry of the relationship. You say you don't know any of the cast? Well NOW you do! That is how it works sweetie.
Of course you don't have much to say after a first time viewing. It's The Big Lebowski dude. It was designed to break your brain a little each time you watch it. CHEERS! 💚
Imagine being the kid playing Larry. Kids at school asking him to do a "Larry" while they hurl Walter's insults at him. I wonder if his career took off ;-)
I'm surprised you didn't know any of these actors. Most of them are huge A list actors or famous character actors. The cowboy at the bar was Sam Elliott, a great actor and one of the coolest dudes ever
I saw an interview with Jimmie Dale Gilmore (who plays Smokey, the bowler on the receiving end of Walter's bowling rage) a while back, and he was asked if his toe was over the line or not. He laughed and said he's truly the only person who knows, as from the angle it was shot, even Joel and Ethan Coen couldn't see where his foot was. He then grinned and said he'd never tell a soul. I also find it funny that the narrator (who by Sam Elliott's own admission has no idea what he's even doing there) says things worked out pretty good for the Dude and Walter. Umm, HOW? LOL. The Dude didn't get his rug back, his friend died, his car was destroyed, he still has no way of paying his rent, and everything in his house was trashed... repeatedly.
Throughout the movie you watch Donnie bowl, in the first shot he gets a strike, and whoops. The next strike he rubs his shoulder/arm, common sign of a heart attack. The last time he bowls, he doesn't score a strike and looks confused. :(

This film is basically a quote fest occasionally interrupted by bowling and guns. It actually didn't do well at the box office, which makes me love it all the more. "You're out of your element Donny!"
"Imagine writing checks instead of just paying normally."
"He's a millionaire that's why he's writing checks..."
FML, This Zoomer is a goldmine already.
The last time I wrote a check was two or three years before this movie came out.
The Big Lebowski, O'Brother Where art thou, and the Man who stare at Goats are my favorite comedy pics.
25:08 Fun fact: The weird guy with the funny laugh is the same actor who plays Professor Lupin in the Harry Potter movies
The Dude shouts " I need my Johnson! " " What do you need that for, Dude? " - Theodore Donald Karabatsos
"You see a wedding ring on my finger ?" says Dude, holding up his RIGHT HAND ...
It's actually different for people! Right hand origin is from Eastern Orthodox Churches, so if you're religious it's quite normal on right hand! Almost all of Europe has "adopted" that belief, so The Dude could be religious 👀🤍
Here we go! Love seeing this reviewed!
We all love the Dude. The Dude abides
Fun one! 😄 Yeah, just laugh along and enjoy it.
Roflmao...your facial expressions during the reaction were absolutely priceless. Great reaction!
Such a strange and funny movie, wonderful reaction 😄
One of the best comedies ever made.
But other than the Cowboy character, did you enjoy the other actors’ performances? I think the actors who portrayed The Dude, Walter, Donnie, Maude, Jesus, and Brandt were all tremendous! 📹💙😍
The Jesus " Happy Feet " dance is something wonderful.
12:21 ...."He's a sex offender".... Yo, when Jesus said let the children come to me, that's not what he meant....
Great Reaction! Another good Cohen Bros. movie is The Hudsucker Proxy. It has Paul Newman, and Tim Robin's in it.
It's worth checking out almost every film that the Coen brothers have made-- almost all of them are cult classics. Great reaction. Thank you.
This is an extremely quotable film.
Umm, HOW? LOL. The Dude didn't get his rug back, his friend died, his car was destroyed, he still has no way of paying his rent, and everything in his house was trashed... repeatedly.
And proud we are of all of them...
Throughout the movie you watch Donnie bowl, in the first shot he gets a strike, and whoops. The next strike he rubs his shoulder/arm, common sign of a heart attack. The last time he bowls, he doesn't score a strike and looks confused. :(
Donnie, you’re out of your element 🤘🤘
This movie and Kingpin is ultimate bowling comedy
I love how no one ever mentions the Dude driving down the street in broad daylight smoking a joint and drinking a beer! 😂😂
my favorite theory is that Donny isn't real. It doesn't quite hold up; but, Walter talks to him and the Dude barely acknowledges him.
Your reactions and personality always make my day!
David Thewlis ("Remus Lupin") is ridiculous in this, so funny.
It's always funny when young reactors get freaked out by someone writing a check in a movie.
Fun Fact: Internet Adult Entertainment companies are responsible for the advances in streaming video and live conference software and technology. Back in the 90's it was listed in PC magazine and other technology publications.
and the VCR.. they also helped polaroid corp a lot in the early years.. no one wanted to take 'those kinds of photos' to the local drugstore
the dude abides, man 🤠
When I first saw this, and Donny's ashes blew all over The Dude, I laughed until I cried.
Just watched it for who knows which time the other days... truly a classic! And one of my favorites from the Coen brothers.
Thank you! I enjoyed watching your reaction. Love the Coen bros. My favorites are Miller's Crossing and Hudsucker Proxy! Check em ou!
Great video cut & edit, and all important scenes are there, great, great ,job.👌
Take it easy man, there's a beverage here
IDK if you'll read this, but I never watch reaction videos twice, but I did here; Your expressions are so good!!
It used to be very common to write checks at the grocery store.
Its a Coen Brothers movie. You should expect the unexpected.
