Um, maybe because it wasn't THAT great? When people babble about the Oscars, do you actually know anything about acting? Not that John Goodman isn't a great actor, but this was nothing special, jesus christ. When Gene Hackman doesn't get nominated for The Conversation, THAT'S when you act surprised, not when it's the dopey "Big Lebowski", jesus christ almighty you're hilarious. People and their hilarious Oscar "outrage". 😅 And always by people with the worst taste, and who know the least about movies and acting and basically anything other than being a lumpen couch potato with a remote control. "The Big Lebowski" was a DISAPPOINTMENT after "Fargo", cult of Lebowski or no cult of Lebowski. This was the year of Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line; "Lebowski" wasn't even a BLIP on the radar that year. It's so hilarious that you'd think a movie like "Lebowski" would be considered for an Oscar. "Fargo"? Different story. That one has got Oscar written all over it (and sure enough, it was nominated for a bunch, and won some, quite rightly) . You can't tell the difference, huh? Hilarious.
@@jeremiahfrench94 Also agree. I’ve always felt that the ‘cash machine’ line flew unnoticed under most folks’ radar, just judging from the invariably muted reactions from virtually all the different audiences I’ve happened to watch it with. To be fair, it *is* one of those movie quotes that you could totally innocently drop, fully contextually, into any conversation whilst out on the town, and nobody would bat an eyelid, whilst you enjoy a crude little in-joke moment all to one’s self. You know, just if that happens to be the kind of thing that one enjoys doing…
Two bits of trivia: 1) Jeff Bridges has pointed to this as his favorite role, even proclaiming "I am The Dude." 2) The song over the end of the credits is "Dead Flowers" by Townes Van Zandt. It's a Stones cover, owned by Allen Klein, who gave it to them to use for free after "I HATE THE FUCKIN' EAGLES!" line.
My favorite little detail might just be that Walter gets dressed up to attend the landlord's recital, like he's going to a Broadway show. If nothing else, he commits to whatever he is doing at any time.
Good call, the only thing coming to mind was Dumb and Dumber but that scene is later in the movie instead of the beginning and Mary has already seen Dumb and Dumber so I knew it wasn't that one.
I love how, through the whole movie, Walter yells no matter where he is....except in the theatre where he actually tries to remember to be quiet. A low key nod of respect to the art
One of those movies that either you click with or you don’t… and thankfully, it seems to click with lots of people. My favorite detail in the whole movie is Philip Seymour Hoffman’s portrayal of Brandt. He is about the only new person The Dude meets who actually calls him The Dude or Dude. Virtually everyone else calls him some variation of his “real” name (Jeff, Jeffrey, Mr Lebowski, etc), but Brandt with his proper speech uses The Dude’s chosen moniker. The juxtaposition is hilarious.
I usually don't watch full movie reactions, but The Big Lebowski is so close to my heart and your reaction was great :) I'll never get tired of this movie
When Donny is dying you can see how much Walter cares for him, and you can hear it in his voice. As for the dialogue, every word is from the script-every "um", "uh", stutter, all from the script! And I think the diarrhea scene is from Dumb and Dumber. Glad you liked this, I've been a huge fan for 20 years!
For me this is one of those movies where I couldn't see what the big deal was when I first saw it. But with every consecutive viewing I laughed more and more until I finally realised that, yeah, it IS an absolute comedy gem. I'm glad that you were one of those with whom it clicked immediately.
Walter always acts and sounds crazy, but if you notice he always had his friends back. He actually cared about them. Especially Donny. Yeah, he always ripped on him but at the ending fight scene you see his attitude change by keeping Donny calm, saying there's nothing to worry about, and holding him back staying out of the situation.
I’ve seen this movie more times than I can remember and it gets funnier everytime. So many small little details that you notice on multiple watches. In the beginning, the goons broke into the dudes place asking “where’s the fu#$ing money Lebowski?” At the end, the dude does the same thing to the Big Lebowski. The dialog is brilliant. The ever evolving situation is crazier by the minute and the cast is phenomenal! Also, a quick note, the reason Walter keeps telling Donny to shut the f#&@ up, is an inside joke with the Cohen brothers. Steve’s character in Fargo never shut up so they thought it would be hilarious to tell him to shut up all the time in this film. Comedic masterpiece!
What I love about Coen brother's films is the fact that they are so dense, and that lends itself well to multiple rewatches. Initially, I thought Walter was really unlikable, but on 2nd viewing, knowing what I know about the story, he became my favourite character.
"His laugh! So awkward." RIP to Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Though he's only in TBL for a few scenes, he's fantastic. His face when Bunny starts going off is so good, and his horrified laugh 🤣🤣🤣 Also, he always calls The Dude Dude 👍 (and I like to think he was in the dark about Lebowski's scheme)
I never understood why The Coens are so surprised by the cult following of this movie, they don't even seem to rank it in their top half of their own movies. To me it is near perfect, the timing and editing especially, just progresses perfectly.
So lovely seeing the next generation see this film. I saw this on the big screen when it first came out and it was my favourite film for like 2 years after. Sometimes a film comes out and it feels like they made it just for you. Got the same feeling from Scott Pilgrim vs The World.
Great reaction. Love the Coen Bros. All of their movies seem to be about ordinary people in extraordinary situations. Since you saw "Fargo," you saw Steve Buscemi's character who was an compulsive talker, and the inside joke is that this time he's always being told to shut up. Watching you laugh through this was a treat. Well done.
My favorite RUclips reaction to The Big Lebowski yet!! 👏 Mary got all the humor and laughed at all the appropriate times for a first time viewer. Thank you for the entertainment and keep it up!! 🙏🙂
I have watched this reaction for over 20 to I don't know how many times. One of my favorite movies! But watching you laugh and enjoy this movie affected me in an awesome way! Your laugh is really a joy to hear. Thank you for your channel!
If you love Steve Buscemi's acting and want a reason to love him more - he was a fireman in NY before he became an actor. When 9/12 happened he went to a fire station in Manhatten and volunteered for weeks, doing whatever he could to help out. He's a real good man.
A little history. The Korean War ended up being the Americans and the Chinese sending in a large number soldiers to fight and keep the other side from taking over the entire Korean Peninsula.
Slater from DAZED & CONFUSED would like to have a word with you. He doesn't know what that word is but it definitely includes "man" in there somewhere.
@@magicbrownie1357 I respect your opinion, but a lot of the comedy is in the body language IMO. A really complex and layered screenplay too (should have won Adapted Screenplay IMO).
He's a total asshole, as The Dude points out, but, he's also right about almost everything. His plans of action are just completely wrong or disproportionate. It's amazing.
Great reaction to this cult film! This is one of my absolute favorite comedies. It delivers on so many levels and the story is just incredibly creative and fun. The backstory to the plot is even more entertaining when you know some of the film noir classics referenced here by the Cohen brothers, particularly many of Raymond Chandler's novels with some confusing plot twists.
I love how Walter when he's in his element, like war or at least a fight, is suddenly very caring for Donny. Reassuring little pats, nothing to be afraid of, trying to calm him down. Just 3 complete nutters who are best friends.
Moved states in the US, I was 10. Family went to this movie. I dunno if moving states sounds like much but this movie is great and has a special place on my heart.
Fun fact: The Dude writes a check for Half n Half at the grocery store and the date on the check is September 11th. This is while George Bush is on the TV saying that "this aggression will not stand against Iraq."
I too noticed and appreciated that Brandt called The Dude Dude. Small details do so much! He admired Lebowsky but actually liked The Dude. It's also a power-move to not expand Buscemi's character, I think.
Yeah, well that’s your opinion man!. All joking aside!,they are Jeff’s clothes but the coans went through his wardrobe and suggested what he should wear.
I've been looking forward to this for a while. I own three different versions of this on DVD, I've been to three Lebowski Fests (winning 2nd place in the bowling contest at one and 3rd place in the costume contest at another), my old bowling team called ourselves the "Urban Achievers," and I just bought a new Lebowski shirt a couple weeks ago. While I don't watch the movie every month (or week, or day!) like I used to, I still love this movie. So glad you enjoyed it!
You also saw John Goodman in "O Brother" as Big Dan Teague. Great reaction to a great movie - I have a fond memory of dressing as The Dude for Hallowe'en one year (in my mum's beige house gown and a wig) and having "The Dude abides!" shouted at me while walking around town. Since the Coen brothers are really doing it for you, I'd like to suggest either "Burn After Reading" or even better "Barton Fink" - the latter has John Turturro in the starring role, who played Jesus here and Pete in "O Brother" (and also has John Goodman in another big 'n' shouty role).
I think the only time I've ever watched this movie I've been sober, and have loved it. It's even funnier with a little drinkie drink in me, and your reactions are f&*king priceless! I haven't laughed this hard in a while.
I love this movie. There used to be, around 2014, a store called The Little Lebowski, in Greenwich Village selling movie memorabilia. The owner wore a bathrobe. 😂 I used to take friends there when they came to NY to visit.
So glad you liked this! Like many others in the comments, I'm going to recommend Raising Arizona, another Coen Bros dark comedy. Def a weird yet awkwardly funny flick. (PS sorry about the Matildas 😢 everyone in the States was pulling for them. But it was a heck of a run!)
Great reaction. For another excellent Coen brothers comedy, try ‘The Hudsucker Proxy’. It’s a quirky story and the cast is fantastic, including one of the last roles by Paul Newman. For whatever reasons the movie didn’t register as powerfully with the public as most of their others, but it’s still great. As far as I’m concerned, it deserves more exposure, and reactions will help do that, because it has all the usual Coen brothers magic.
I remember slipping out of work with my coworkers to see this movie in the theater. Great choice! For the film with the diarrhea scene you were trying to recall, was it "Trainspotting"? Thank you for the reaction.
When you're sitting in the audience still sort of rocked that Donny died (and also not really sure why you care so much, but you do), and you're trying to decide if you are amused or mad at the fact his friend's go get a coffee container to transport him........then Walter tosses the ashes and the theater was screaming.
Hey Mary Cherry, great video! I am a big fan of this movie and only stumbled upon your channel because of my special love for the movie. As someone who has watched this movie a million times, I have remembered my first time watching this movie. I wish I could go back to my first viewing. Great video
@@davidz3879my guess would be: 1. Labyrinthine plot that is indecipherable by a mainstream audience 2. “Adult” themes and scenes 3. Just too unusual for mass consumption For many, the Coen Brothers are an acquired taste. I feel lucky that I acquired the taste over 35 years ago!
The Big Lebowski is like this complex mystery story DESPERATELY trying to happen around a protagonist that just can't be bothered. I'm here for it every time.
Plus John Goodman and many more. Arizona was the 1st Coen Brothers movie I saw in the theatre. People actually walked out, not “getting it.” Amazing. 🤷♀️
I saw Raising Arizona (1987) as an kid with my dad and found it hilarious. Of course, i didn't know who The Coen Brothers were back then. Over 10 years later, i learned who and how great these sibling auteurs were. This was an incredible piece of work. Not your average caper and then some. One of Jeff Bridges' most iconic films and roles. As "The dude", it sort of matches his off screen personality and also he's surrounded by a great cast. Most wouldn't believed that this was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Huge honor for any cult classic and it is much deserved. There is a spinoff, "The Jesus Rolls" (2020). It's also the remake of a French film Going Places (1974), John Turturro reprises his role as Jesus Quintana and is writer/director of it
I found it hilarious that when the director and production team were trying to figure out what Lebowski would routinely wear, they decided to raid Jeff Bridges' closet, LOL. And whenever you see Lebowski's jellies, they really belong to Jeff Bridges. I think he still has them.
I love the movie theory thatof Donny, as a Vietnam war 'veteran', died during the conflict, with his frequent(only he really talks with him) interactions with Walter being a figment of his own imagination, devising the image of Donny as a way of dealing with his own PTSD. It brings even more color to the character when you think that only we, the viewer, can see Donny. It becomes a little convoluted when it comes to the ashes, and brings the reality back to its fold, but its interesting to think about when you rewatch the movie. Donny being a ghost.
Fun fact Jeff's wife and kids were in studio for the acid trip bowling dance scene where he's floating down the lane when he turns over his wife told one of the last girls to put this bushy wig under her panties 😂😂 that's why he smiles huge in that scene
11:19 The frequency with which I use this quote and gif cannot be overstated. 28:21 This one too, on occasion. 20:52 One of the reasons this movie is a Classic is the narration and appearance of The Great Sam Elliott. 25:33 Gotta love the soundtrack here, Santana - Oye Como Va. A classic. 27:28 Another classic, Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In). He was a GIANT Country Star, but this one was from earlier in his career when he was trying to make a go of Rock music. History will decide if the pivot was correct. 28:45 Yeah, cops in the US get away with an inordinate amount of absolutely heinous sh!t, especially against minorities.
This isn't Vietnam but between this hilarious movie and your hilarious reaction I'm falling facedown on the ground laughing. You are definitely not a amateur lol. Awesome hair. Gorgeous face. Cool shirt. And the blanket on your bed really ties the room together lol.
So glad you enjoyed this. Two other offbeat, funny, character-driven, overlooked Coen Brothers films to check out are "Burn After Reading" (starring Francis McDormand, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and J.K. Simmons) and the underrated, slapstick "The Ladykillers" (starring Tom Hanks and a very funny J.K. Simmons).
One of the reasons "The Lady Killers" rates so low is because it is an Americanised remake of a British black and white film. When the Brothers stick to their strengths the results are amazing.
@@trevorgoddard2278 Yes, the original is considered a classic comedy but is not nearly as colorful or funny as the Coen Brothers' version. And the music is great too, It's a splendid slapstick comedy and features standout performances, particularly by Irma P. Hall as the elderly lady targeted by the absurd group of thieves.
@@walterpanovs You are probably right but those of us who grew up with the original and have watched it 3 or 4 times can't help but to compare it and complain about the differences. It is quite possible that people who have studied Homer's oddessy will complain about "Oh Brother Where Art Thou".
The Cowboys pronounces Los Angeles closer to the Spanish pronunciation. The usual pronunciation is shifted towards English. The old Perry Mason black and white series is set in LA, and the actors say the city like the Cowboy. Yes, that is Professor Lupin, on his way from the set of Veronika Decides to Die. Walter is right. About the toe at least. A plastic bag? Well........ Irrelevant trivia: The detoed woman is Aimee Mann, a real life singer who appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There she watches a vampire dusted and comments 'Man, I hate playing vampire towns.'
So glad to see this, just a couple days ago I was checking to see if you had done this movie in past and maybe missed it. This movie is very rewatchable

Slater from DAZED & CONFUSED would like to have a word with you. He doesn't know what that word is but it definitely includes "man" in there somewhere.
@@axr7149 I don't remember laughing once in that entire film.
@@magicbrownie1357 I respect your opinion, but a lot of the comedy is in the body language IMO. A really complex and layered screenplay too (should have won Adapted Screenplay IMO).
Fun fact the nihilist that gets hit with the bowling ball is Flea the bassist from Red Hot Chill Peppers.
Damn he sunk low. I guess his Japanese boss eventually found out.
Nice
Also Aimee Mann (another musician) is the girlfriend who lost her toe.
@@danieldunlap4077*NICE.*
An early Cohen Brothers film which hooked me, and many others, is Raising Arizona (1987). I think you'll enjoy it as well.
Say what you will about Walter. You definitely want him on your side in a scrap.
Yeah but no.
Cause if he wasn't there, there wouldn't be a scrap to start with.
He's a total asshole, as The Dude points out, but, he's also right about almost everything. His plans of action are just completely wrong or disproportionate. It's amazing.
@@huyxiun2085 don't get out much huh?... 😂
@@jonnybgoode7742 Not out is a superb placeto be only bested by in a heated pool.
Especially against nihilists.
Also the Spanish version of Hotel California has been on my playlist since Spotify was created lol. Timeless
I've seen this hundreds of times and actually own it on VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, and the Special Edition Blu-Ray. This is also my most quotable movie.
My absolute favorite movie! Thanks for reacting Mary, glad you enjoyed it!
7:20 "That's not a pomeranian" and the "marmot" was a ferret - misidentified animals is apparently a very subtle running gag...
Fun fact, those are Jeff's personal clothes. They didn't give him wardrobe people. He showed up wearing that stuff and they just went with it.
Yet hot Julianne Moore's character is attracted to him!
Even the Jellies!
Yeah, well that’s your opinion man!. All joking aside!,they are Jeff’s clothes but the coans went through his wardrobe and suggested what he should wear.
@@davidz3879No, she's not. She's just desperate for a kid and he isn't gonna want anything to do with it.
True, apparently that's how the actor dresses normally.
41:12 "That rug that fit so well with the rest of the room..." She said this to prove it's her first time watching.
Mary - "He shouldn't be drink-driving." Me - Laughing so hard I almost stop breathing.
She actually missed my favorite part of that scene is where the car hits the dumpster. That entire scene makes me laugh uncontrollably.
I think the only time I've ever watched this movie I've been sober, and have loved it. It's even funnier with a little drinkie drink in me, and your reactions are f&*king priceless! I haven't laughed this hard in a while.
1:07 "i haven't looked into the plot."
wonderful. there is no plot. 😎
There is a plot, but the Dude is only peripherally involved 😅
I love this movie. There used to be, around 2014, a store called The Little Lebowski, in Greenwich Village selling movie memorabilia. The owner wore a bathrobe. 😂 I used to take friends there when they came to NY to visit.
So glad you liked this! Like many others in the comments, I'm going to recommend Raising Arizona, another Coen Bros dark comedy. Def a weird yet awkwardly funny flick. (PS sorry about the Matildas 😢 everyone in the States was pulling for them. But it was a heck of a run!)
So many quotes, I use "You''re not wrong, you're just an asshole" all the time xD
They did more movies, "you know, for the kids"
Absolutely! Hudsucker Proxy is fantastic. Paul Newman has long been one of my favorite actors. Tim Robbins is hilarious.
Perfect Office reference (Scott's tots). Love it.
I remember slipping out of work with my coworkers to see this movie in the theater. Great choice! For the film with the diarrhea scene you were trying to recall, was it "Trainspotting"?
Thank you for the reaction.
Thats an awesome sweater Mary, goes so well with your skin tone + hair color ! 🥰
The spreading ashes scene had me rolling on the floor 😂😂😂
When you're sitting in the audience still sort of rocked that Donny died (and also not really sure why you care so much, but you do), and you're trying to decide if you are amused or mad at the fact his friend's go get a coffee container to transport him........then Walter tosses the ashes and the theater was screaming.
@@msdarby515 all facts 😂
Hey Mary Cherry, great video! I am a big fan of this movie and only stumbled upon your channel because of my special love for the movie. As someone who has watched this movie a million times, I have remembered my first time watching this movie. I wish I could go back to my first viewing. Great video
The big Lebowski is such a masterpiece and it never gets old for the dude 😎🥃😂💯
It's the best film of its year & one of the best films of all time. Why has it never had mainstream popularity or won important awards?
@@davidz3879my guess would be:
1. Labyrinthine plot that is indecipherable by a mainstream audience
2. “Adult” themes and scenes
3. Just too unusual for mass consumption
For many, the Coen Brothers are an acquired taste. I feel lucky that I acquired the taste over 35 years ago!
The Big Lebowski is like this complex mystery story DESPERATELY trying to happen around a protagonist that just can't be bothered. I'm here for it every time.
L.A. on every day of the week...probably.
I recommend Raising Arizona if you haven't seen it. Coen Brothers plus Nicholas Cage! Great movie!
Plus John Goodman and many more. Arizona was the 1st Coen Brothers movie I saw in the theatre. People actually walked out, not “getting it.” Amazing. 🤷♀️
@@Divamarja_CA They might have just been unable to cope with the soundtrack.
One of the most quoted movies of all time.
Most wouldn't believed that this was selected for preservation in
the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
Huge honor for any cult classic and it is much deserved.
There is a spinoff, "The Jesus Rolls" (2020).
It's also the remake of a French film Going Places (1974),
John Turturro reprises his role as Jesus Quintana and is writer/director of it
This is an amazing review! I felt like I'm sitting next to you watching on the cinema, thanks for sharing!
I found it hilarious that when the director and production team were trying to figure out what Lebowski would routinely wear, they decided to raid Jeff Bridges' closet, LOL. And whenever you see Lebowski's jellies, they really belong to Jeff Bridges. I think he still has them.
Apparently his daughters binned them while he was out working...
@@Bulletproofeyeballs No way. LOL! I don't blame them.
A lot of words from someone called Silent Bob. 😉
"What was a Chinese man doing in Korea?"
Fighting on behalf of North Korea lmao
Love most people don't recognize flea from the red hit chili peppers is in it. So many stars!!
Simmons).
I totally agree that Ladykillers is so underrated!
also Hail, Caesar! is a very good one.
Brown alert: Ladykillers has a small IBS subplot
Jeff Bridges is such an underrated actor. I love this film! NGL, you had me at "diarrhea scene" in your intro. I'm like WHAAAT? 😂😂😂
Walter Sobchak is one of the most truly insane characters in movie history
OVER THE LINE!!
I need a Goodman/Oldman-off!
First time I've ever been this early for a Mary Cherry vid!
So glad to see this, just a couple days ago I was checking to see if you had done this movie in past and maybe missed it. This movie is very rewatchable
