-Pee Wee's didn't start off as *kid friendly.* The original stage performance was aimed at an adult audience.
-Toho sued the studio, for the unlicensed use of their characters.
-The big guy who chases Pee Wee is former wrestler Silo Sam. He stood 7' 8" tall.

(Without mentioning to the seller that it was stolen from them originally.) They met in a public place to confirm that it was indeed the stolen bike, the partner "test rode" the bike, and rode off stealing his own bike back. The seller / thief couldn't report the bike as stolen from him because it was not his in the first place and the original owner was the one who took it back!

22:36 the tough lady in the biker bar is Cassandra Peterson, better known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. She and Paul Reubens met at the famous Groundlings Theater in Los Angeles in the 1970s and had been close friends until his death. Imagine if Pee-Wee and Elvira made a movie together. One of life's biggest what-ifs.

First saw his pee wee character on an HBO special, had some adult jokes in it but only an adult would get it so I would say it is
kid friendly. Paul when you ask anyone he has met or worked with was very well liked, look up Conan Obrien about him. This is
an absolute classic and my friends and I quoted it many times.

Haha My younger brother (turning 9 at the time) wanted to see this for his birthday in theatres, so the rest of the family begrudgingly went thinking 'what kind of crap are we going to see?'....driving home after watching the film we all thought it was so stupid.....then we all started talking about ridiculous/stupid different parts of the film, and laughed at how ridiculous they were....by the time we got home, we all decided it was a hilarious film, and how much we surprisingly really liked it! Great childhood memory!

I used to stop at The Wheel In: pretty cool place. Sadly, it was demolished around 2010. However, the dinosaurs are still there, and from what I understand, the T-Rex was painted to look like it was dressed like PeeWee, after he passed away.
And, of course, the music was composed by the great Danny Elfman, of Oingo Boingo fane.

There's one Pee Wee Herman appearance that few people seem to remember.
He sings Surfin Bird ("the bird is the word") in Back to the Beach with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. It was a callback and spoof of their "Beach" movies of the 60s.
Nowadays that song is probably better known for Peter's version on the Family Guy.

It was a very early movie for Tim Burton to direct. Paul Reubens said in a public appearance years later that they had someone else in mind to direct. He saw Tim’s unique visual style and wanted him. He characterized the reaction from the others involved as not understanding why visual style would be so important for a comedy film.
Danny Elfman did the music for this and would continue to do other Burton movies.
This Pee Wee character was someone he developed in the Groundlings improvisational group. He created an HBO tv special for the character which was a parody/satire of children’s shows, but with adult innuendo. This carried over into his tv series, Pee Wee’s Playhouse.

When I first saw this (on cable TV shortly after its release), I didn't know it was a Tim Burton film. The Large Marge segment totally has his touch now that I look at it in retrospect. The first time I was aware of Tim Burton and his trademark style was the 1989 Batman film he did with Michael Keaton. His second film in the series, Batman Returns (1992) was even better in my opinion. Edward Scissorhands (1990) was the first time I saw a Tim Burton / Johnny Depp collaboration and that was a brilliant, visual contrast between suburbia and "the fringes" of society.

    Greetings Mary Cherry.
Actually, by the time this film came out, Peewee Herman (Paul Reubens) was already known for about 10 yrs. Paul had a comedy tour doing this character. Thusly, people already knew what to expect (for the most part) when it came to the film. He got started with the LA Comedy troupe, The Groundlings. The late Phil Hartman helped him develop more the character of 'PeeWee" since he was also a member of the same troupe.
Dottie (aka Elizabeth Daily) can be seen in "Better Off Dead" (a John Cusack film) as the singer at the school dance. She was also seen in a few shows and done voice over work.
Glad that you can see the film for what it was and understood the characters within. It was NOT supposed to be an award-winning film. It was just supposed to be a B-class family oriented, fun and quirky comedy-adventure film. It was written by Reubens and talently directed by Burton.
My first Tim Burton film was "Batman" which was his 3rd directed film. Then it was "Edward Scissorhands" followed by "Beettlejuice" and then this one. The collaboration with PR took a film that cost about 8 million (in mi-80's money) and took it to 5X in gross earnings to slightly over $40 million.
The spoiled child actor (Jason Hervey) would grow up to play Wayne Arnald, the older brother of Kevin Arnold in the much-acclaimed tv series, "The Wonder Years". He is also known for some other small roles in these films: "Back to School", "Meatballs 2", "Back to the Future", "Police Academy 2", and cult classic, "Monster Squad". He has had more success on television.
