You missed the joke in the hot tub. He said he got a John Deere letter instead of a Dear John letter. John Deere makes tractors and lawn equipment. Subtle humor :)
@@ckelcro When Sonic goes; "I'm cold, I'm wet... there's a fish on my head!". Schwartz said that in the same tone Carrey does in this, and has said in interviews he did it as tribute.
The gag where Lloyd saw the old newspaper on the wall and shouted 'We landed on the moon!!" was improvised by Jim Carrey. It wasn't in the script but he saw the prop in the background and made it into a gag.
Fun fact, the ending was them getting on the bus, Jim felt that it wasn't what Lloyd what would have done so he improvised as usual and well the rest is history.
I thought he was great in "Something Wild", but no so much in this one. I thought Jim Carrey had the best lines and carried the entire film. Jeff Daniels was a decent sidekick, though.
Jim Carrey's chipped tooth is actually real. His tooth got chipped in a school yard fight when he was a child and covered it with a cap ever since. But the night before filming began, he removed the cap because he felt the chipped tooth would add to his character.
One of my favorite movies growing up. My friends and I still quote this on a regular basis. Also I was embarrassed that it took me until this year to realize that if Mary had married Lloyd, she'd be Mary Christmas. :P
Harry: "I work with dogs, I groom them, primp them, I've even bred them." Mary: "Oh wow, any unusual breeding patterns?" Harry: "No, mainly just doggy style." Lmao This is hands down my favorite comedy movie, I always enjoy it even watching it multiple times.
If you’ve never seen them, both of Jim Carrey’s Ace Ventura movies are quite hilarious & shot Jim into superstar status. His movie The Truman Show is also fantastic
The Mask was I believe his big break, he went from being known to just a handful of Americans due to being in the Wayans' brothers sketch comedy show 'In Living Color' to being known around the world, but I agree that Ace Ventura shot him to super stardom. One fantastic movie he was in while still relatively unknown was the 1988 surreal musical comedy Earth Girls Are Easy with Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum where he plays a furry alien called Wiploc.
Frankly, the end of the movie is their smartest moment. They knew there was no way it was possible that a bus of bikini clad women just happened to drive by and offer them that deal. They sent that organ stealing cult of women down the road to that town and got out of there.
And a shout out to Lauren Holly, who gets NO credit for playing the perfect straight man (no typo) to Jim Carrey's and Jeff Daniels' antics. She's a big part of why many of the gags worked so well.
Since you've already seen There's Something About Mary, the two Farrelly Brothers movies I recommend watching are Kingpin (1996) and Me, Myself and Irene (2000).
I like when Harry is telling Lloyd how his girl broke up with him and he said “she said some crap about me not listening to her idk I wasn’t paying attention” 😂
Similar movie, made by Farrelly brothers, is titled "Kingpin." One of my fav movies. It has so many subtle jokes and music soundtrack is awesome and well thought of.
My cousin has picture framed on the back of his toilet. It is Jeff Daniels holding the sides legs straight out. Makes me laugh every time. One thing i love is both the over the top, but also the subtle dry and clever jokes. One of my favorites, is the very begining when Lloyd says in response to how was his day, Eh, fell of the jet way again.
Saw this in a packed theatre, years ago with a bunch of friends. The audience was laughing for the entire movie. Good times. Fun fact: The gala scene in Aspen was filmed at the Stanley Hotel, which was the inspiration for Stephen King's "The Shining."
Apparently, it was also where cast and crew stayed while filming, but Carrey allegedly ran out of his room, called for a cab and went to a different hotel (he wouldn't step into the Stanley Hotel except for when they were shooting)
My all time favourite comedy film. Saw it in theaters (age 11), and still quote it to this day. Every time I watch this cry from laughter, despite knowing exactly what is coming. When it came out on VHS, I cut lawns and did yard work so I got save money to buy it. I watched it every day for a loooong time. Glad you enjoyed it! "WE LANDED ON THE MOON!!"
I remember laughing super duper hard at Harry nailing Mary in the face with that snowball as a 6-year-old. I still laugh just as hard as I did then as a 30 something-year-old man. It's something about it being just so unnecessarily aggressive that just makes me belly laugh every time I see it.
This movie is so damn funny. I saw this in a sold out theater way back when and listening to an entire theater laugh to the point of tears is something everyone should experience at least once in their life. It was so much fun.
The way their stupidity makes them escape potentially life threatening situations is very similar to how inspector cleaseau always gets out of situations because of his stupidity and clumsiness
If you want to watch another Farrelly bothers film, my favorite of theirs is *Kingpin* which stars Bill Murray and Woody Harelson. Similar sort of comedy, maybe a bit smarter or funnier.
I've known a few Lloyds in my lifetime. I think one message that you could get from this movie is that sometimes we are all a little stupid and make mistakes, but it's okay. Laugh it off and move on!
Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind!! It's such an amazing concept from not only a story/plot perspective but also the way the filmmaked constructed how a lot of the movie was shot. I’m so glad you watched the theatrical version over the unrated version. The pacing is a lot better and the jokes and situations are more clever because they’re not as crass. They ended up doing more with less.
