There no borders control if you're traveling either by car, train or plane. Only countries that require passport is Ireland and the UK. Even Switzerland it's not an EU member and it's in this agreement.

Came here to post this. You can travel between Schengen countries, which is most of Europe these days. But back in 2004 they shouldn't have been able to enter Slovakia without passports or go from Slovakia to Germany. Slovakia only joined Schengen in 2007. But Germany to Italy, sure.

"Youth Hostels" exist all over the world, including Australia but normally need a membership. Some are just like normal hostels. In Britain at least they are a little different and are usually associated with youth groups like Scouts, Guides, etc and are located in areas known for outdoor activities like hiking, camping and so on. Like normal hostels they often have have facilities like kitchens and you can book the entire building for exclusive use if your group is large enough

"Youth Hostels" exist all over the world, including Australia but normally need a membership. Some are just like normal hostels. In Britain at least they are a little different and are usually associated with youth groups like Scouts, Guides, etc and are located in areas known for outdoor activities like hiking, camping and so on. Like normal hostels they often have have facilities like kitchens and you can book the entire building for exclusive use if your group is large enough

In Germany, the word “Jugendherberge” is very common and translates 1:1 as youth hostel. In the Netherlands, where the scene with the “youth hostel” took place, if I remember correctly, there is a very similar word for it (“Jeugdherberg”), but I don't know if it's as common. 🤓😊

I remember taking the train from Amsterdam to Brussels in 2005 and no one checked our passport.
