I prime my Custodes in black for that reason. Makes the gold more darker and rich. Loved this vid Val! You should do this more often, would live to see one for the marines, dread and land raider.
Greetings brother, Captain Alouisan from Germany here. I still use the anicent instructions from the White Dwarf 2012: Very interesting scheme. Averland sunset (Base) Yriel Yellow Layer Seraphim Sepia Shade Yriel Yellow Layer All applied with a brush because a son of thorn must be able to bear the pain 😅 I'm a big fan and look forward to your more videos. For Dorn and the glorious seventh - we are the last wall ✊
Colour Forge is coming to NA this month, preorders are live for this exact spray and Two Thin Coats has a yellow glaze that is an identical match to Lamenter’s Yellow. The Valrak yellow is achievable in the States now!
'And making it into a defender of the first...' Yes, I like where this is going. 'Wall!...' Sadness. Really nice tutorial. Looking forward to more of them. Also good intro. All in all great job. Thumbs up. Bonus. No scam in this video.
Valrak is the world's most notorious Fister! ✊ A lot of people were asking for your yellow technique, weren't they... I hope you do more tutorial type stuff. I think your minis look fistacular! 💛
Thanks for this buddy. Was not sure what yellow to use. Just purchased my first Warhammer set bastion strike force imperial fist. Been painting sigmar for the last 6 months so I'm excited to finally dive into 40k.
You’ve inspired me to do my age of darkness boxset as imperial fists - but would be good to see a series of these videos aimed towards the Horus hersey.
I use black primer on my imperial fist army too, and I actually like how the yellow comes out. Everybody in the know tells me I should use gray or white, but I'm obstinate.
It’s a great tutorial. For panel lining I would give it a blast of gloss varnish and thin the wash down a bit. Not that anyones technique is wrong, it would just speed it up
Tip from me: cover the non yellow areas(eg tank treads) in masking tape or blu tac. Keeps the foundation colour off those area. Saves having to repaint the black later.
Your video is fantastic. Clear instructions and a cracking guide to achieve these results and the end result speaks for its self. Would really enjoy seeing more tutorials like this. Keep up the great work.
For painting the treads on most SM tanks, the best thing to do is to spray them silver BEFORE gluing them on. That way you save having to go in with a brush and spending ages getting into all the little nooks and crannies.
Ik you say it’s nothing crazy but I honestly think your shade of yellow is perfect since starting my imperial fist army I can’t find a shade of yellow I like
Simple and effective. Looks top tier and the video was easy to follow a long. Some painting videos have to many steps and way to many techniques and the result is just as good here. Please do more.
Great to see this kind of content from you Val. Have you ever tried using oils for panel lining? They are really simple to use and can speed things up massively. As a bonus you can always just remove them if you're not a fan or you need to tidy up over spill.
Had a crack with the new Imperial Fists contrast today, so bloody easy I'm going for a 7th legion heresy army, even easier when I get it through the airbrush. Done in 1 coat. Also think it's a substitute for Lamenters Yellow, I cannot understate how good this paint is. Targor Rageshade or Bezerker Bloodshade (both good, I think it's down to taste, I prefer the purple tone of Rageshade) also really make that armour look good. If you want to stick with Agrax, the OG is better than ever in the new formulation. I've switched to Vallejo through an airbrush but all hail the mighty Halfords matte black! I started my test model from black and a base coat of mournfang brown. Always start with black.
Great job and so thankful for a video that finally doesn’t call for 12 different paints from 3 different brands. What PSI did you set your airbrush to?
I know you are going for certain look, but a couple extra steps would IMHO really help. 1- using white ink in the air brush to highlight the panels before applying the yellow. 2- gloss varnish and oil wash will really make the panel lining crisper and can start the weathering process.
Amazing! That yellow looks so good! 😍 I know you said it’s the same method with infantry and smaller models, but would you consider doing a video on how you do this with a brush? 🤔☺️
Fantastic tutorial and absolute gorgeous paint job. I think you’ve converted me towards Imperial Fists! Just a quick question, after completing your averland sunset and yellow glazing. How would you go about repainting the base coat if any mistakes occur during the later stages of painting in other details?
Valrak, can you teach me how to paint a model proper yellow? And then border that yellow out with the occasional angular black stripes...? Jokes aside, that's a damn fine tank. Dorn would be proud.
I had heard that GW's clear air paints were effectively the old glazes... Unfortunately they appear to have discontinued all but two of them, and they yellow is no longer on their web store.
Just seen your Imperial Fists army video and wanted to find out how you paint them. One question @Chapter Master Valrak - do you thin your primer before spraying it? Would you mind sharing what pressure / needle size you use please?
Are there no highlights in the yellow? I am terrible at highlighting despite practice, and this looks amazing. I’d love to be able to do an Imperial Fist yellow without the need to highlight!
I always use black undercoat, it helps with the dark areas or “don’t need to paint” areas. If you use white, you have to paint eeeeevvvvrrrryyytttthhhing… unless, you have white shadows… 🤷♂️ great vid thanks!
I love these tutorial videos, your painting style is awesome. I was wondering how long the recess shading takes you and how long in general it takes from start to finish?
Big E: So, my son, what color would you like your legion to wear? Rogal Dorn: Yellow, like all the construction servitors and machines are painted with.
I’m curious to see how the new Imperial Fists contrast compares to the glazed Averland Sunset or Gold Yellow Vallejo? The final yellow here looks very good. Just curious if there is a one color that closely match’s that is still in production
I have a whole Imperial Fists force ready to paint, as a more novice painter who wants to get a whole battle-ready army quick, I’m thinking of picking up the new White Scar primer and Imperial Fist yellow contrast
@@brandonh6004 I've tried it today and it's good, but! 1) it doesn't shade like you'd expect from contrast paint. 2) over white it's basically Yriel Yellow 3) it's way better airbrushed on, but fine brushed on if you take your time.
Got a question for any Contrast paint users. Because I have very little experience with contrast paints. But I got the Age of Darkness box and a Kratos with the intention of painting them Imperial Fist colours. This tutorial looks great, and easy. So I'm happy to do this method on my tanks. But for ease and to save time on my troops, I was planning on maybe trying the new Imperial Fist Yellow contrasts. But What I don't know is, how good are contrast paints on larger models like tanks? If its crap on tanks, I don't want to change my painting style from my tanks to my troops. Would rather stay consistent over the whole army. So if as I suspect, the contrasts aren't as good on large flat surfaces, I think I may do this method on all of my Imperial Guard. If contrasts are fine on tanks, I may do it that way. Anyone used contrast on tanks who can recommend it or not?
You can use it on tanks but you've really got to take your time. Imperial Fists isn't like Iyanden Yellow, if it pools it doesn't turn orange but it can still pool. Honestly I think it's worth getting an airbrush, a cheap one will make using the contrast a doddle across the whole army.
Painting my heresy fists. What if I can’t get Averland or Sunset Yellow because I’m in the US? Do you have a vid on the IF Contrast? I have a good amount of that
actually that legal with the lightning bolts means that that tank is a unification wars vetern :) but thanks for the tutorial, have you tried the new Imperial fists contrast yet BTW?
Yo Valarak, not sure you’ll respond to this. But do you think it’s a good idea to priming and imperial Fists army with Vallejo Sun Yellow. Love your content!
I will be joining you with fists for HH valrak. I was planning on doing fists for 40k when I came back but turns out my cousin was already doing them so I went other ways. But for HH he is doing ultras so I will be doing fists when I do HH! In some ways even better as I can have dorn
While I don’t think that Iron Warriors are supposed to look like this this is actually an amazing video. Thanks Val!!
Thats an odd looking iron warriors tank
😂😂😂
Good goooooddd lol
It just needs a bit more love, (not from the emperors)
I know right?
Odd choice to do paint it in a pure “warning-stripe-yellow”!
Right
I like this content quite a lot, hopefully it’s part of a larger painting/modelling tutorial series
I prime my Custodes in black for that reason. Makes the gold more darker and rich.
Loved this vid Val! You should do this more often, would live to see one for the marines, dread and land raider.
They say that you should base coat metallic colours black. I don't know why, but apparently it helps.

Actually seeing the yellow against the black turn out like it did for that base coat was amazing. Using a spray as well is mad good as well
I've been looking for a decent simple tutorial for yellow for years. This is the best one I've seen so far. great job

You’ve inspired me to do my age of darkness boxset as imperial fists - but would be good to see a series of these videos aimed towards the Horus hersey.
I imagined my Imperial Fist Kratos EXACTLY with this loadout, 1x big gun, 4 heavy bolters! Great work Valrak!
This is perfect for doing the hazard stripes on my marines.
That's exactly the perfect Imperial Fists colour scheme. Not too banana man yellow & not too mustard yellow. 👌🏻
This is how I do mine too.
Firstly i need to build my 2 boxes of AoS and my Kratos tank, then i can painting. Thank you lord Val, for your knowledge. Helpfull as always:)

Plastic wrap is a good alternative; it's won't lift any paint off or leave any sticky residue.

Looks almost ‘cell shaded’ after the glazes. Interesting technique - looks cool

Outstanding work Val.
Always love your videos and especially your tutorials dude !
Glaze! I remember when you asked for us to send you Lamenters Yellow 😂
I wish I still had mine
I would recommend priming with Wraithbone spray paint for a better base coat.
Nare, black is hardcore mode, we Fists like a challenge, doing it Wraithbone is far too easy, makes us like Iron Warriors then.
I second those Vallejo items. Very good.
Glorious Yellow. Dorn would approve.

Can you link us your compressor, hose, airbrush?
Looking forward to the How to paint Iron Warriors series :)
Dude you should try Tamiya brown panel liner ink instead of agrax. It’s a game changer seriously in terms of speed and look. Just varnish before hand
Get the tamiya enamel panel liner mate. Will make panel lining a breeze (as the name suggests).
I had heard that GW's clear air paints were effectively the old glazes... Unfortunately they appear to have discontinued all but two of them, and they yellow is no longer on their web store.
