First off, You tube is preventing me from leaving comments on the "3 minute board games needs your help video" which is super frustrating. Thank you to everyone who has helped the channel so far. Secondly, Moon was a real disappointment to me as i've enjoyed the previous 2 games in this series. But the decision on how to handle drafting her is just the worst fit for this style of game. Either draft all the cards and then play them later like its a wonderful world, or draft and reveal together like 7 wonders. The draft, play your turn, then hold your cards until every player has played a turn, then pass the cards feels absolutely glacial.

I saw this comment then found and watched your other video. Clicking the link for an explanation as to why comments are turned off there gave little in the way of explanation except for:
"Sometimes we may turn off comments on content, even if that content doesn't violate our guidelines. We do this to protect vulnerable creators or audiences."
My conclusion is that RUclips saw the vulnerability you displayed in that video and turned off comments to protect you. Any other explanation I thought of was either significantly more sinister or nonsensical.

This could have been perfect for me! I love all things moon-related (look at my name), I really like drafting games, and engine building is quickly becoming one of my most favourite things ever. I also really like how the rovers are placed on your opponents' cards, and they get to keep the rover. It makes you pay attention to what other people are building and they get a nice bonus for it. But one thing I really like about closed drafting is the simultaneous play. Drafting and playing the cards you draft immediately sounds interesting on paper, but then you also have rovers and bonus actions and reputation cards, and the cards in this game look way more involved than something like It's A Wonderful World.
Speaking of, I second that recommendation for It's A Wonderful World. I got to play it for the first time last week and oh my goodness it is so good. I need to play more engine building games.

Thanks for the review J, very much appreciated, as is your honesty. To me, Moon feels more like Terraforming Mars than it does 7 Wonders, so the non-simultaneous actions don't bother me too much. I appreciate it might be a barrier to some though.

Cheers matey. Yep, broke my hard a little to diss the game, but you gotta do what you gotta do. And Moon comes after we've just played Shipwrights redux as well, which my test group really liked, so the change of pace just killed it for them and my other group. I think the ideas of rovers on other peoples bases and the expedition cards are clever though. And yeah, its just the pacing, it felt awkward to draft that way.

Dang, I've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of this game and you're the second reviewer to comment on how slow the drafting is. 7 wonders is one of my favorite games so I'm hoping i can look past that.
At least hoping its better than villagers. It really hasn't clicked for me at 2 players, the decision space doesnt feel really interesting or deep.

I much preferred villagers, its nice and simple and fast.

I did the dev work on Moon so bear that in mind but the game does play really well with two. The length can vary but during demoing a group of four finished a game in just over an hour and we’d regularly finish 3 & 4 player games in 90 mins on TTS.
You can do a lot of planning during other players turns and two of the card types (yellow and blue) are super easy to parse. Two players was my favourite way to play although I enjoyed solo and 3&4 too.
In my experience the drafting speeds up after the mid point of each era when players have seen all the cards out there.
Simultaneous drafting wouldn’t work in Moon as you’d lose the expedition leaders and rovers which add a lot to the experience. I think you’ll find more decision space in Moon than Villagers. It’s certainly the most complex of the three!

I see what was being attempted with rovers and the expedition cards, as i mention in the vid. I like the ambition there. But it came at the cost of game flow. And the test groups i played it with played shipwrights of the north sea redux only a few weeks ago, so the memory of that game, and its pacing was fresh in their minds.
Not one of my testers wanted to play it again either. Which is quite uncommon.

The playtime is my big concern as well. I have a lot of card drafting games (including IAWW) and one of their best features is the simultaneous play.
How would you compare Moon to Shipwrights Redux?

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  11 месяцев назад +1

Similar complexity, but shipwrights just flows so much better
