To be fair, I believe a "full steroids allowed" ruleset, where the only medicinal restriction is "make constant exams to be sure that the athlete is health" WOULD be a good idea.
Specially since the data aquired would be more or less public (released like a "report for the XX year's results in Y event" for individual anonimity), allowing for spread of the information.
The problem is that probably we would need for a new specific set of rules, since that would be a new world of possible injuries, complications and choice of medicaments. So it would be better to start with more chill sports (maybe Tennis or something like that, since it has a little pause every now and then and no direct contact between the players)

That might cause more problems with local authorities and getting fight venues booked though. I think there's already some trouble in certain places because the sport's rules are considered too dangerous. If the industry is seen to be encouraging drug use.... Plus, some countries are WAY stricter about possession laws, which could lead to more situations like Brittany Griner with foreign athletes being arrested and charged OR a disparity between fighters of different nationalities. Fighters from more permissive countries can obtain the substances and medical monitoring needed to use them safely, while fighters in more restrictive countries can't.

There's one thing I'd add to the life time ban. A big fat bill of returned winning sums. USADA freezes blood samples for future testings. So for every win they can retrospectively declare a NC because of steroids, make the athlete repay every dollar they made that night. A life time ban prevents them from continuing with an unfair advantage, a fine like that additionally can take away everything they wrongfully earned. If Dillashaw had gotten a life time ban in 2019, he'd still have retired fairly wealthy, so cheating would still have paid off. The risk of a lifetime ban plus taking away most of an athlete's money would make cheating a risk of losing their career, good name and money. Considering how many athletes do this full time and have to rely on the earned money later in life, this could do wonders to prevent cheating.

The other issue is (let’s be honest) most of these professional athletes in combat and contact sports like boxing, mma, football etc. are already on PEDs. If you promote a lifetime ban and were actually honest about wanting to catch them, most of the athletes would be banned for life. Let’s not pretend most of these guys aren’t already on steroids. Secondly why would any sport be actually serious about lifetime bans? Their athletes would be noticeably weaker, less athletic, less agile, less explosive, slower and worse by every metric. The quality of unenhanced athletes would go down dramatically and would directly effect the ratings and profits as consumers watching notice the decline of its product. Drug testing agencies like USADA are simply there to promote plausible deniability that most athletes aren’t on PEDs so that their sport is deemed acceptable by society and the public. If we were being honest we like our athletes enhanced and pushing the limits of their sport to the extreme (we just don’t want to admit the ugly truth and what it takes for these athletes to get there).

This has been well known in the bodybuilding community for decades. The standard for anyone wanting to compete at high level has always been to dope heavily and train hard for years and then scale back for a while and enter the scene. I watched this cycle from the outside for years because my gym was owned by famous body builders....there were all these people working out with them after hours who were much larger and lifting much heavier but who had never been in competition or on display publicly at all...those were the next generation, people free to juice to extreme to build. Then they scale back and lose some but nowhere near all the gains and appear in competition. It's pretty disgusting and also profoundly harmful to the atheletes who are driven to destroy their health and shorten their lives in this way.

I love it when you put in the effort to make a well researched videos like this! It’s *always* an educational treat! I can’t put into words how much I agree with the lifetime ban solution! Odds of it ever happening are probably rough but it’s definitely a start to dealing with the steroid problem! Especially with so much hard evidence supporting that side of the argument
So I’m genuinely curious! From one nerd to another is there any chance of you ever doing a video on whether or not a fighter having a random genetic mutation like *Myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy* be a blessing or a curse??? If you ever get to read this I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this!

    • @ArmchairViolence
      @ArmchairViolence  Год назад +6

I've actually already looked this up (because I'm a nerd), and it likely wouldn't help much. While people with that condition have much more muscle mass, the muscle is actually weaker pound-for-pound. I would guess this has something to do with poor muscle recruitment due to their nervous system having never undergone exercise.
In a sport that has weight classes, having muscle that is weaker pound-for-pound would likely be a disadvantage. Plus, you have to worry about the cardiovascular requirements to provide all that muscle with oxygen. Overall, I doubt it would help much, and it might actually be a huge hindrance.
This is a good question, and I can't believe I actually knew the answer off the top of my head. 😂 What luck!

    • @maxanderson3733

@@ArmchairViolence that is so wild but fascinating. Most entries talking about that condition are always bringing up some sort of greater than average physical strength with no health downsides! Tho I have to admit that stamina demand is easily one of the most obvious downsides. I wasn’t expecting to hear that these muscles will be all week or pound for pound. Where did you discover this this incredibly ironic weakness?

    • @ArmchairViolence
      @ArmchairViolence  Год назад +5

@@maxanderson3733 I did some research into genetically engineered designer babies, and looked at what traits might be desirable. Muscular hypertrophy was an obvious thing to examine, but I determined that, while there really aren't any side effects for the average person, an elite athlete could actually be inconvenienced by it.
However, there are some caveats to this. It's likely that they are weaker pound-for-pound because having never earned the muscle by lifting weights means that their nervous system has never been exercised and they have terrible motor unit recruitment. If someone with the condition ALSO religiously lifts weights, I have no idea what would happen. The condition is very rare, and I never saw any case studies of someone with the condition attempting to become a great athlete. Would exercise make their muscles ENORMOUS, or would it just improve their motor unit recruitment? I have no idea.
If you can find the answer to these questions, I would certainly be interested in the result!

Someone should gather info about athletes' results before and after their suspension for PEDs usage, so that we could see whether their performance drops, raises, or maintains the same.
Of course, we'd have to assume their results were due to PEDs (specially the experience factor), if favorable, or disregard PEDs' benefits, in case their performance drops or stays the same, so I guess we'd have some [insert technical bias' name] here. But the problem, specially if the control athlete raised or maintained his performance after the suspension, is that the experience gained for more training sessions due to PEDs use is practically impossible to distinguish from the experience one would naturally get along his career progression (we can assume that any athlete would naturally be more experienced as his career progresses).
We'd also have to assume that an athlete facing suspension for PEDs use wasn't using them prior to their being caught, so that it'd be a "one-time offense".
I now see that this information I requested would be pretty much pointless, regardless of the results, because we can't control many important variables, and the results' interpretations all could lead to fallacies.
I decided to still comment this so that others may not waste mental energy unnecessarily (also because of the sunk cost fallacy lol)
Maybe the ethical solution (complementing the life-time ban) would be creating a promotion or organization company that arranged fights without any sort of testing whatsoever, ie, with free PEDs usage, so that any athlete in it would be using without consequences. It's like giving trans women their own category, instead of trying to fit them within the women's.

  • @katokianimation

If you think about it the commision at least coherent with their alredy exsisting shitty gudelines if they let them compite after one year of being at the female hormon level.

This may explain the Casey Viator "Colorado Experiment" Arthur Jones, the creator of Nautilus equipment & training staged in the 1970s, to prove Nautilus "one set to failure on each piece of equipment" was superior to standard free weight multiple set strength/bodybuilding routines. Casey Viator was already a very experienced bodybuilder, who even though he was coming off of a prolonged layoff, juicing was certainly part of his pre-layoff regimen. That's even aside from the accusations Viator juiced like crazy during the 30 day experiment, the fact Viator was a long term roid user simply invalidates the Colorado Experiment claims as far as they applies to non-juicing, novice lifters.

Im honestly wondering if our cultural views on performance enhancers might actually be preventing us from making use of something that could be extending the quality of life for the elderly.

There's one more thing that should at least be discussed. We solely focus on the athletes when they get caught, but realistically it's not just them who cheat. Usually the whole team is involved. To stick with Dillashaw as an example, nobody can tell me that a combat sports og like Duane Ludwig did not realize TJ using. The teams know! Most gyms have a "guy" who can set you up with the stuff.
So don't just punish the athletes, but the entire team. Prohibit coaches whose athletes got caught from any awards like coach of the year and ban them from cornering for a couple of years for every one of their athletes who get caught. Doping is such a systemic issue that it can't be solved with single measures. You have to punish everyone involved.
But to actually do this, two things need to happen:
    1. All promotions worldwide have to agree on this. If only the UFC would enforce these rules, Bellator and One would just swallow their entire roster.
    2. You'd have to declare these rules a few years in advance. Right now they'd lead to the sport dying immediately. Every major gym would get banned in a couple of months. So clean up the sport for the future. Every caught cheater from 2030 on will lead to a life time ban for the athlete, a permanent disqualification for the coach and team for any awards and a 2 year ban of the coaches cornering. That way they could start right now to clean up house, kick out the fixers and make sure their new prospects stay clean. It would lead to a lot of sudden early retirements in 2030, but this could actually do something to clean up the sport.

If the sport really tried to get rid of doping, it should make a clean cut and yes, that would probably mean that there wouldn't be any events for a while. I personally prefer that over clean athletes getting their bodies irreparably damaged by cheaters on a systemic level.

My point is why care most sports have steroids rampant in them for years almost your and my entire life unnoticeable so why stop now.
What your advocating for is going to get rid of every sport what I am advocating for is just let them do it and stop stigmatizing what has happened is sport for years upon years anyway.
By the way so you know you do realize half of most sports hall of famers did juice at some point just saying.

      1. Of course 99% of all professional athletes use steroids. Everyone involved knows. But (!)
      2. It's still illegal and publically frowned upon. Ignoring this issue is a time bomb. Again, look at professional cycling. They got exposed and now nobody cares about it anymore.
There's two solutions to the problem. Either
      A) act on what already shut be the norm and get rid of any doping with an iron fist
      B) legalize and normalize doping.
But just ignoring it, is doomed to fail and leads to innocent athletes getting hurt, because there is a handful of athletes who don't cheat. And everytime they face up against someone with chemical help, they're at a physical disadvantage against someone trying to severely hurt them. Ignoring that boils down to abuse!

@@jc-kj8yc It's been happening for years why care now? As a fighter myself all it really does is give more metabolic potential the damage most fighters really sustain is in the form of poor or over training, consistently hard sparing, lack of proper stops by refs, and alcohol/drug abuse outside of the sport that degrades their performance.
Steroids is the lowest tier of the issues most fighters face. Now is it morally right 🤷‍♂️ but to ban people is impractical. I think your second option makes the most sense so we can at least regulate and control the usage to an extent with medical teams and doctors.

There's so many sus fighters in the UFC. Usman, Romero (formerly UFC anyway), Chandler, etc. As a natural lifter, I know how hard it is to put on lean mass, once the newbie gains end, you're gaining like 1-2 lbs a year and that's with diligent and consistent work. You mean to tell me these guys are doing 6-8 hour sessions, working as hard as they can and aren't losing their gains? They're expending so much energy and yet remain so lean and bulky, it's just BS overall, and a lot of them don't pass the smell test. The Diaz bros are some of the only clean ones in the sport. Most of the Brazilian roster has been getting away with it for some time, too. Paulo Costa is openly joking around about his "secret juice," but the More Plates More Dates video on his "progress" is highly indicative of someone who's been using PEDs.

Sure Life time ban seems harsh but it is fair and should be the case with the door opening to the Range of Steroid Sports. If you can think of it, there should be a steroid version, Powerlifting, Sprinting, MMA ect Badmington even because those that get caught are going to be glad not to feel that they can no longer be competitive in their passion just because they would "cheat" to win"... so yeah we can open a door on a whole new arena maybe get the 100M under 9.27 maybe find a key to having Hysterical strength on tap all the while keeping the integrity of the Pure blood games. Should we as a community be encouraging/allowing them to take it though? Fighters are not going to self-regulate or advocate for their own health and safety; that mindset is fairly antithetical to a champion mindset. Plus, the industry might start running into more resistance from local authorities and trouble booking fight locations if it's seen to be allowing/encouraging drug use.

This is essentially the answer. The Olympics does this, all pro boxing does it, pro MMA does it as well.. The main problem would be maintaining the health of the fighter when they take too much, and the obvious answer to that is that taking steroids is unhealthy to begin with, so you'd end up with similar if not the same commissions. Otherwise your top fighters would die before they reach 40, essentially destroying the organization
