    Hey mate. Just wanted you to know that I just did this on my 2002 Disco 2 TD5 and it made a huge difference! It's a totally different truck! The ECUs sputtered a bit when I first started and tried it then they sorted themselves out. She's got crazy acceleration now compare to what it was. And the MAF was working! Thanks so much for this tip! I also shortened the waste gate arm a couple threads so it runs a little more boost.

    My Disco 2 actually pulls pretty hard (I did shorten the waste-gate actuator rod back from 11 to 9 threads showing), so I guess the MAF is functioning as designed... I might connect the two wires with a quick connector between them for when my MAF does give up... When towing I could bypass the MAF to get more torque... like you I'm not looking to spend big dollars on the old dog... mine is a 2000 model manual as well... cheers for the tip : )

    Dino mate ! You are brilliant ! I am going to try that in few days as I am no expert on vehicles.
    Last night I bought Disco 2 2002 SE 2.5L Td5 4sp auto with 220k on it. It has Max torque =315Nm
    I own a 2016 Kia Sportage Platinum 2L diesel also. It has Max torque = 400Nm
    I was wondering what makes the Kia's pickup so fast compared to Disco 2 and what could be done to increase the pickup of Disco 2.
    Your simple solution is one big change to the pickup of td5.

    • @dinosshed
      @dinosshed  5 лет назад +1

      Hey mate, glad to see you’re interested in getting your hands dirty on a disco👍 The biggest reasons for the difference in performance between the two is nearly 20 years of development as the Td5 was developed in the 90’s, vehicle weight, transmission gearing and the fact that the Td5 is softly tuned. It’s easy to push them out past the 200hp mark with an ecu chip/flash which also comes with a huge torque increase.
      If you’re running taller/bigger tyres than standard this will also have a large affect on acceleration. If you do you’ll need to lower the final drive ratio to offset them. This Maf mod or hack will make a big difference ‘if’ your existing Mad is not working properly, often pick up drivability lower in the rev range and off boost.

    Did this mod over a year ago now as my maff was dead and car would barely move till 2000rpm even when 4wding you couldn't bump or try hitting a hill with more speed by using 2nd low as she would just stall unless you were well above the 2000rpm
    Now I just idle up everything in first low as the big increase on power also tents to smoke a little and get the odd puff of un burnt fuel so mates tell me but she had 360k on her now and still going strong with 18 psi boost to add

    I did it too. It's still no cannonball, but I've got a better response from zero, that's for sure, much less lag. And good I did it: I just realized that I had quiet a bit of oil or other fluid on the ECU and in the lower plug, no idea how that got there.

    • @dinosshed
      @dinosshed  Год назад

      It just sorts out that nasty lag between idle and turbo kicking in. The oil is tracking down the wiring loom that enters the engine to control the injectors. The cable acts like a hose and the oil flows down into the ecu plug.

    • @dinosshed

      Hey mate, should be a white coloured wite trace. Currently watching my hot neighbour give my missus a lap dance, bit difficult to concentrate. The colour code runs from the tps connected to the throttle back to the ecu. It will vary in voltage depending on where you have the throttle position. At idle it will be under a volt and run up to 4 volts at 3/4 to full. Actually drops off to mid three's between 3/4 and full.

  • @simonjohnson4302
    @simonjohnson4302 5 лет назад

    If it's a 10P engine, this won't work as the MAF is only used for EGR calculations and not for IQ calcs. As for the throttle pedal mod... you may as well just leave the MAF disconnected (if it's a 15P engine) as it will run off the MAP and IAT sensors instead to calculate it's air flow (just like the 10P engines do).

    • @dinosshed
      @dinosshed  5 лет назад

      Mine is a 10p and with the Maf disconnected it was no different as the sensor wasn’t working at all. Literally wouldn’t get out of its own way prior to making boost, now it’s much better since providing the ecu with the same signal as the tps. I have heard this before about the 10p vs 15p but I’ve found a totally different result playing out. The forums that state the Maf sensor makes no difference to fueling often mention to replace it if the engine runs sluggish off the mark which is contradictory. Ask someone else who’s done it or try it yourself.

    • @dinosshed
      @dinosshed  5 лет назад +4

      Basically you’re disconnecting the Mass Air flow sensor (Maf) from the circuit. You then connect the Maf sensor wire to the throttle position sensor (tps) circuit. When you press the accelerator pedal down the engines computer (ecu) sees the same signal voltage at both the Maf and Tps but the signal is only coming from the throttle position sensor, tricking the ecu into thinking it’s seeing the voltage from the Maf. It puts more fuel into the engine and makes more power down low in the rev range as a result.

    • @dinosshed
      @dinosshed  11 месяцев назад +1

      Hey mate, there's probably no real gain performance wise if your maf is in good shape. It will provide a bit more initial take-off from idle but no gain after that. It tends to operate more like a mechanical injection system. A huge benefit is the ability to make your own intake/air filter system without the need to incorporate a new maf sensor. Also handy if you blow an intercooler pipe off, you'll still be able to accelerate to a safe spot. Hope this helps :)

    • @dinosshed
      @dinosshed  5 лет назад +1

      You fucked it! Nah mate, if your Maf is good before you may not notice a ‘massive’ gain. Mine was screwed and could barely get it to move when not boosted. Still should give you a noticeable gain in the off boost rev range, mine chicks out diesel smoke with the bypass and didn’t before.

    do you think this would effect the Exhaust gas temps looking at doing a few mods to my td5 but first thing im going to do is get an egt gauge

    • @dinosshed
      @dinosshed  5 лет назад +1

      Anytime you labour an engine in a tall gear you’ll increase the egt. This engine is ok to 550/600c before damaging it. My egt has increased by 20-30 if I push it, still well under the maximum.

    @camd7452 3 года назад

    • @dinosshed
      @dinosshed  3 года назад

      This one still gets 9l/100 with mods that would hurt economy. If everything else was stock it'd get 8l/100 easily. Just remember to disconnect the Maf once you bypass it.

    • @dinosshed

      Mine improved because my Maf sensor wasn’t working at all. It’s 8/9 litres per 100km. The benefits are much better response from idle to 2,500 rpm and the fact you’ll never need to buy a new Maf.

    What color is the tps

    • @dinosshed
      @dinosshed  7 месяцев назад

      It will depend if you have a two or three track tps. One of them will range down as you depress the accelerator and the other ranges up. Best to trace the wire colour that is at your throttle pedal and locate it on your ecu. Use a multimeter to verify the signal, it will range from roughly 0.8 volts with ignition on, engine off, pedal at rest, to around 4.0 volts with accelerator depressed.

    • @dinosshed

      Mine doesn't chuck a code, just check the air flow readings and you'll see them increase with throttle. At least that's what happens with the dozen or so that I've done. The other way to confirm it works is to disconnect one of the boost pipes and see if you can drive it. If it's not done correctly it will be a complete slug to take off.
