I'm going mad with my ford focus ecoboost 1.6 150HP. Since 4 years It emits blue smoke when it is started cold. it always whistled slightly at load (boost from turbo) timing belt was changed last year. since yesterday its howling very loud after a throttle above 15% and has NO boost only vacuum from minus to max zero. its very difficult to find some good mechanics to get a proper diagnose here :(
The wastegate can’t be replaced, ford doesn’t sell the actuator separately. It comes with the turbo. People always talk about the wastegate but that actually refers to the actual flapper inside the exhaust housing. The wastegate actuator is what moves the flapper itself.
If you just want to go the cheap and reliable way to make power. Bigger intercooler, better air filter not air box air box the factory is very good, upgraded fuel system and tune. That should wake it up a bit. And high flow spd downpipes if you want.
I have a P0299 on my 2.7l 139k. Occurs only on moderate climbs under moderate load. On/Off cycle resets it. I replaced blow off valve, turbo boost solenoid, cleaned MAF sensors. No luck! My turbo wastegate arm rattles and is worn with play in the linkage(passenger side). Is this causing my problem and something I can fix with adjustment?
I don’t really think the loose wastegate arm is causing any issues. The flapper inside the turbo itself is under a lot of pressure when the turbos are in boost so I don’t think that can cause the problem. I’ve seen people replace turbos and still get the P0299 code. I would check your wastegate actuator lines to see if there’s leaks, also check that the actuator itself moves freely with a vacuum pump like I have in this video. You can also replace the wastegate solenoid, (not sure if that’s what you were talking about when you said turbo boost solenoid)
@@BoostKingMatt Good Morning! I am getting a crash-course in this same situation with my daughter's truck. I think that Jack may be referring to the Blow Off Valve; up front on the bottom-left corner of the cooler. We just replaced that on Sunday (didn't help). We will be putting in a new MAP sensor, and waste gate solenoid this afternoon. *not the way I wanted to learn about this turbo system* 🤔
@@BoostKingMatt Welp! Found the culprit! So, since both parts were affordable (especially with my employee discount at O'Reilly's), we bought a MAP sensor and a waste gate actuator. My gut told me that the MAP sensor wouldn't be needed. But my daughter said to throw it in too. She's a really good mechanic; still learning though. With both parts in, the truck did not want to stay running! The Snap-On scanner is yelling about the MAP sensor, so I put the original one in. Cleared the codes and it fired up just fine ... Phew! Road test time ... Normal driving for several minutes, with a couple of light demands on the turbo; so far, so good! Then I get out on the highway; moderate demand on the turbo and that was good. Okay ... Time to act like I am passing someone! Ran like a champ! Thank you for such an awesome video/lesson! Once I figure out how, I will drop a few coins of the realm your way! 🙂🙂
@patrickcohan8902 that’s good to here! I am glad to be of help. Just to be sure, I’d check your truck’s battery, sometimes sensors can act up or codes can be caused by the battery having lower voltage than it should.
So can you help me. Replaced my drivers turbo on my 2015 due to the rattle at 130k miles. The noise is back now at 158k miles. Truck runs great but the rattle sucks. Should I check vacuum and adjust? Could that take the rattle out? Ty 2.7 all stock
@@JayDoo7 I don’t think adjusting it will cause it to be quiet. It’s a normal thing that all of us Ecoboost guys deal with. It doesn’t affect performance.
@@BoostKingMatt It started rattling at around 60k miles, I am at 90k now. They changed in actuators in 2017 from mechanical to electronic.. My thermostat just went the other day lol
@@BoostKingMatt yes he's a 2.7 and it spools and blows off in park stock. Thought it could be leaking past the waste gate slightly. No drivability problems so I won't worry too much.
Thanks!
You’re welcome, and thank you as well!
Only video on RUclips explaining exactly what I need to know. Thanks!
Excellent explanation on setting the waste-gates.
The best guys who show where exactly the problems are. Greetings from Germany.

@hansiman9262 hmm yeah sounds like it might need a proper look through
Thanks for the comment. Currently in the throws of trying to adjust my OEM 2011 turbo. This walk through helped a lot.
Thank you bout to be fixing my turbo (replacing wastegate possibly) this is very good to know for my troubleshooting check

I would like to do this on my bone stock 2.7, but I’m worried the engine will run too lean and throw a rod out the side of the block.
It probably would without proper mods

My turbo actuator rattles on cold start and ford wants me to replace it with a bring new turbo.. any recommendations?

Any updates on a fix?@@Monkeymike68918
Mine just started at 100k
Do you know if 2nd gen 2.7 is the same? Got the very light throttle rattle going on. Sounds like trailer chains dragging
I'm on full e85 also. Turbo doesn't spool in neutral, my dad's stock '21 does
That rattle is wastegate flapper inside, nothing to worry about though. I have it too, and I have brand new hot side.
