  • Bed Bath & Beyond became a massive homegoods retailer with a decentralized structure and a focus on keeping customers happy. In popular imagination, Bed Bath & Beyond is best known for its generous coupon policy. But critics say the once ubiquitous chain ignored the threat from newer, nimbler online rivals like Amazon.

      Exporting jobs and cash is what we're now good at. Small- medium brick n mortar stores can't compete with Walmart's cheap Chinese goods or dodgy labor practices. Now Amazon's upped the ante by offering 24 HR preferred shipping. Free ? - sure, but that's costing something to deliver that prompt a service. Overnight gratification- perfect marketing for millennials,shut-ins, those who don't have time to shop .. Amazon is a major threat to all brick n mortar stores/ players/franchise's. When UPS, and USPS ,and FedeX ( and more ) are delivering Amazon packages , they're definitely already a major player, eating into thier ' turf'- and profits.

      @TravelerPat right, but those people are declining in number. When the reason to shop a store is to cruise the bargain bins, I'd rather be going to rummage/ estate sales, auctions...many of which advertise/ sell online...and don't have the " turnkey costs" of brick n mortar stores...see the trend ?

    I received a Bed Bath & Beyond gift certificate years ago for Christmas. It was June before I had a chance to use it, and they said it had expired days earlier. I called my nephew, he emailed me a copy of the receipt, it showed on the receipt that it was less than six months old, so I went back with a copy of the receipt, and they wouldn’t budge. I know it’s a minor thing, but I haven’t purchased from them yet because of that. Great store, but IMHO their customer service was sadly lacking.

    • @Erin-Thor
      @Erin-Thor 5 лет назад +6

      Victoria - I’m not quite sure it was horrible, my nephew was young and the dollar amount was low, it was a case where the thought counted more than anything. That they decided to not honor it was a minor thing I know, but I used to spend on average roughly a grand a year give or take at their stores. That $40 gift certificate cost them way more than than they will ever know, I will never go back. Ever.

    • @Erin-Thor
      @Erin-Thor 5 лет назад +5

      Victoria - I don’t blame my nephew one bit. He is wonderful and now has two kids. And trust me, I am not shy. I did ask to see the manager who dutifully tried it or checked it again (swiped it) and responded very drolly "Sorry, it’s no good." I showed him the receipt and he just shrugged and looked at me like I was wasting his time. I had a cart full of stuff, my coffee machine had died and a dozen other things were in the cart. What surprised me was how little he or the clerk cared when I calmly said no, when asked how I would like to pay for this, as I walked off. Stores are just people. Looking at their sales chart and when this happened I can only imagine that they thought they were trying to do the right thing. They were probably under pressure to increase profits and sales, and that was their motivation for their decision. I’m just one customer, I won’t be missed, LOL!

    I used to work there. Absolutely horrible place. People don’t shop without coupons and being able to use multiple coupons in one purchase hurt us soo much. Customers would always mention how they refused to shop there without coupons. Not to mention our average customers are people that are 40 plus years old. Also before I left we had a terrible return policy. You wanted to return a 400 dollar Dyson vacuum that was a year old? Sure go ahead! No questions asked at all! Forgot a coupon at home? Don’t worry the manger will just manually put it on! Plus we don’t even advertise by any other way but word of mouth and email. Have you ever seen a commercial for bb&b? Of course not! Plus the way we kept everything in stock was horrible. The video mentions how management at stores Oder the products and that is correct. My store would end up ordering so many products that sold horribly and this happened so much that we sacrificed a section in the store that was once for kitchen ware to then be changed into a clearance room. The stock room was also a disorganized clutter. Nothing was organized. It was just put into boxes and you had to hope of someone asked for that product that you would have to remember where you put it in the first place. Oh and did I mention that we are underpaid as well. 9.00 dollars an hours to put up with a ancient computer system,changing heavy fixtures and moving 60 plus pound products up and down dangerous un-Maintenanced ladders. In my time there I had 3 co workers fall from ladders backseat of how loose the handles were and how loose the bolts were. They also kept us in the dark when it came to how the company was doing or if hours were gonna get cut. Hours got cut so bad at my location that 10 employees quit. How bad were the hours? People who needed to pay bills had 4 hours a week. Full timers had the minimum of hours and Managers were unaffected. Another thing that I hated is that the management heavily picked favorites. The manger that made the schedule would only pick the people whom he knew could get everything done without asking for help during his shift so that he could sit up stairs all day. One day we called him down to help us on the registers because we were getting slammed. To my shock the guy didn’t even know how to use a register because he had been sitting upstairs for so long. Sometimes I would come into work at 1:00 to 10:00 and I wouldn’t see a single manger till we left. They tell us that we can do well as a store if we focus on customer service but no matter how many good google reviews we got that didn’t help. We struggled to make 8k a day. We went WEEKS before we actually made a day. If anyone has any questions please do ask.

    Owning a home at today's elevated and manipulated prices in the housing market is out of reach for the younger generation. So they don't have any reason to fill a non-existent house with items from Bed Bath and Beyond. The trend will only get worse only until these "markets" return to fair value, but that looks increasingly unlikely as the FED and other central banks are hell bent on maintaining assets at these levels and even taking them higher. They'll sacrifice the dollar in doing so.
    We'll end up renting cages in multi-occupied apartment rooms just like in Hong Kong, and shop at Hamsters R' Us.

  • @JaysonKing69

    Bed, Bath & Beyond needs to significantly lower their prices to draw in more customers but in order for that to be financially feasible, BB&B needs to establish direct partnerships with manufacturers to offer exclusive products not available anywhere else... No easy feat. Another issue is, especially in light of the ongoing pandemic, is to focus on e-commerce, mainly free shipping incentives with low minimums, exclusive sales for members on high-end and desirable items and offer curbside pickup as well with an exclusive coupon for an in-store purchase only on a future visit. The selection/variety that BB&B provides in-store is unapparelled but it does get overwhelming at times too especially when you're just looking for something specific. It's also very difficult to purchase only one item there if you're browsing. You'll quickly find other items that you didn't even know existed or that you didn't even think you needed but ends up being surprisingly useful. That's a huge win for both BB&B and the customer. But what brought the customer in the first place? Probably one of those 20% off a single-item coupons which immediately hampers most customer's willingness to purchase more than one item right off the bat. Perhaps a membership program that offers exclusive and consistent discounts for frequent/loyal shoppers would be a good implementation. And maybe offer 20% off unconditionally for cardmembers with the BB&B credit card. Many are willing to spend more if they don't feel the pain of having to fork over they're cash right away. There are ways out of this before BB&B goes further downhill. It's just going to take a lot of clever ingenuity.

    Heres the short answer everything inside Bed Bath and Beyond is overpriced. You can find the same items in a discount rack department store like DD's Disocunt or Ross or Marshalls at a much lower price. I bought shower curtains, a shampoo rack and clothes bin for under 30 dollars total this easily would have costed over 50 at Bed Bath and Beyond. Me saving 20 bucks means I get to eat lobster tonight instead of bean tortillas.

    As I watch this video my doorbell rang. It was UPS with an Amazon package containing an IHome clock i ordered yesterday. I tried to buy this at BB&B but they wanted $99.99 plus tax. Now I could have saved 20% with one of the half dozen coupons laying on my kitchen counter but that would have only brought it down to about $80.00 plus tax. I purchased the same exact item from Amazon for $69.99 which was the price most other retailer are charging for it. It's sad to see America's retailers going under but when you see this type of price discrepancy you can understand why it's happening. I seldom go into a BB&B anymore unless it's an emergency and I need the item right now. They have beautiful stores, well stocked and very clean BUT and there's always a "BUT", they are vastly overpriced.

      Most things on amazon are priced below what a company buys them for. Amazon doesn’t make a huge profit from sales. This is why normal retailers can’t compete with amazon.
