If you look at guides and look at builds everyone wants everything engineered to hell. It doesn't matter what guide you follow: it's not simple and it's not easy.

    AFMUs are not merely very lightweight, they're literally zero mass, like fuel scoops. Also while it's nice to have two so they can repair each other, they don't malfunction like most other modules, and if they do hit 0%, a Reboot & Repair can bring one back to life, so don't feel too bad if you'd rather drop one of them for something else.
    Instead of the 2A Power Distributor, go for the 3D - it's 0.5t lighter, and its engine recharge rate is higher, so you'll boost more frequently, while saving ~0.1MW.
    0.5t is also how much a 1D repair limpet controller costs. Stuff in a cargo rack and one of those instead of that docking computer and now hull damage need not accumulate.

    • @SpiritOfSmoker
      @SpiritOfSmoker 4 года назад +4

      Actually you can go with 1D power distributor, you only lose the ability to boost, but you can only boost in normal space and you are going to be in supercruise almost all the time during the expedition. And you can even downgrade powerplant to 2D if you turn off your shields while in space, you will need them only when landing, then you can turn off fuel scoop.
      This two downgrades will give you additional 0.22 l.y. of jump range.
      The most usefull downgrade i can think of would be downgrading fuel tank to 4C, this alone give you additional 1.61 l.y. jump range, while still be able to jump 3 times on a single tank, giving exactly 36 l.y. of jump range total. (instead of 34.17)

    • @limitationsapply
      @limitationsapply 4 года назад +13

      @@SpiritOfSmoker Boost is important when you need it. You'll rue the day you traded it for 0.14 LY as you plummet towards the ground on that unexpectedly high-G world late at night. Will you even *notice* 0.14 LY?
      Dropping from a 2A to a 2D power plant gains you a whopping 0.03LY, which is entirely lost in the noise - the fullness of your reserve tank has more than double the effect. Meanwhile you've nearly doubled your base heat load and made power management a lot more fiddly. False economy IMO.
      Also not a fan of cutting down on fuel tanks, primarily because it cuts down on the effectiveness of neutron boosting. Probably also makes general routing less effective because the plotter has to direct you to fuel stars more frequently.
      None of your points are wrong, but think twice before you make major trade-offs for fractions of a percent in one metric.

    • @SpiritOfSmoker

      @@limitationsapply tbh i do not have much experience in long-range exploration, (my max distance from sol is only 5k l.y.) and i haven't landed on a high g planet yet. So maybe ill learn it some time in a hard way xD
      but for now all my exploration and trading ships are equipped with 1d power dist.
      about power plant, i have never overheated in my asp, and additional need in turning modules on/off makes me fell more engaged with my ship, so i think it's not for all.
      thanks for great critics of my trade-offs, ill consider changing some of this when i finally do some real long-range exploration.

    • @limitationsapply
      @limitationsapply 4 года назад +10

      @@SpiritOfSmoker A quote I read recently seems appropriate: "Right up until you need it, resilience looks like waste".
      The longer you're out there, the more likely you are to encounter a once-in-a-blue-moon situation where you need boost, or a decent shield, or whatever else. Also the longer you're out there, the greater the cost of losing your ship.
      Some people get a kick out of living on the edge like that, others like to spend a few percent of their jump range on reducing the risk. Nothing wrong with either approach, just be sure you take the right one for you and your journey.

    Actually you don't need a 6A fuel scoop. I am very confident in my fuel scooping and never overheat during scooping. Also my exploration trips take months so no hurry, it's about the journey not refuelling faster. So better use the 6 slot for what really matters to each explorer. Speaking of exploration philosophy why is everyone so stoked on max jumb range? Why can't you just enjoy the game with as many stops instead of as few ones? In my opinion the purist curious explorer needs exploration tools not necessarily a faster ship but definitely a reliable long haul vessel that can travel the void with no major issues along the galaxy.

  • @crimsyn76

    I think the heat sinks are important. I get what you're saying, that if you know what you're doing, they're not necessary, but they can be a lifesaver, literally. I'm currently just roaming the galaxy at random, and I had no heatsinks at all. I picked some up on a whim in Colonia, and headed to Sag A. I've been to the black hole at Maia, but Sag A is a different beast. I got a little too close trying to get to the tourist beacon, and my heat started rising. I immediately tried to turn around and fly away, but I wasn't going anywhere, lol, and the heat was still rising.
    Thanks to the whim and picking up heatsinks, I was able to deploy the sinks, find a new star in my FOV, and charge the frameshift drive and jump away. Without the sinks, I would have been done for!

    Great advice and timely. I learned how to make enough for a hauler hunting pirates with the police in my sidewinder, followed road to riches in hauler, then got an asp explorer after four days of road to riches, I used it to mine for two weeks then bought a python and mined a week with it. Got pirated by a player and didn't even get pissed, because I learned and it makes the game more challenging. I also learned how to reboot to repair thrusters. I don't understand why one would pirate but to each their own.. I appreciate the boredom, excitement gained through hard work it takes to experience this title...I am tired of mining for now and I want to go as far as I can for one month, nothing else, just go as far as I can, So I have gone back my ASP and have been trying to get it sorted for longest possible jumps. I have one 500Mil, but i don't have to get the next big ship right now... I agree with your build and was pretty close. Thanks for the video. I would really appreciate an opportunity to fly with you if possible some time, I have only played a few weeks, but have earned every ship myself. I do it all the time when I want to FSS scan a system and refuel at the same time.

    I laughed really hard tonight. PVEing with a friend that swears only idiots would ever take a supercruise assist modual... A, I like smoke breaks on my way to where I'm going and B, when we both got our cockpits shot open 2v4ing, and won the fight, who do you think made it to station with time to spare, and who do ya think suffocated in supercruise repeatedly missing the station due to a total lack of forward hud? :P
    IMO unless you are pvping there is no real argument against the assist mods, sure, I can supercruise and dock, but my boss's car can be summoned with the push of a button from down the block in 2021, why would I NOT trust the autopilot in my 3300s space boat? Docking computer frees up time to check your star map, check your msgs, maybe que up some more youtube vids, nothin wrong with that. I get why in a pvp situation you likely wanna ditch it for something that can help in a fight, but even then, I have won more than a few fights with two slots wasted on assist mods and still come out on top, its not like they lock your FAO button or anything.

    I recently installed the the lowest grade of guardian powerplant and power distributor I could fit in my phantom explorer. The fsd range stayed about the same, but gained a lot of power, and way faster boost charge for my thrusters. And able to fit 4 lightweight modded size 2 rail guns and still average a 65 lyr a jump. Yeah, don't need the rails, but I got rofl stomped by an federal assault ship flying NPC on my way back from 3 hrs of exploration near guardian ruins. Not sure why he came after me, no scan or nothing, was just mapping a sector when i got interdicted (i tried to scan a private data thing, maybe that sent him after me?). > afmu rated b has more charges than a, which will let you stay out that much longer..
      No, it has more ammo, but they're less efficient per shot. A 5A repairs 187.6 units of integrity, a 5B repairs only 167.9 units. Note you can synthesize AFMU ammo from materials you can harvest in the SRV, so both can in principle keep you going indefinitely.
      The benefits of the B's are they're cheaper, have more integrity (of limited interest unless you overheat a lot and only carry one), and use less power (not a big concern when they're off most of the time). But they repair less, and I believe they repair more slowly.
