F-350 7.3L gas checking in. The engine braking on my truck surprised me. Much better than I expected. I’m sure it’s not as good as what you can get out of a big diesel.
Same rear axle, 11,300 gvwr with a lighter engine so payload 3,787 on a very similar Lariat.
I do hate that tailgate weight and I never use the step. I have a flip down step on the corner that I use all the time. I’d like that payload back with a plain tailgate. Or that GM tailgate that makes it easy to reach the hitch.

It’s difficult to pick a truck that has everything you need. I had a 2018 ram mega cab 2500 Cummins. It drove great plenty of room, main concern was the payload and bed space. The long bed helps me at the ranch, loading cargo for trips in the rv, loading cargo for the ranch. Rams crew cab lacks space for car seats in opinion. I researched every truck test drove every one ton. Exhaust brake in ram hands down the best. Optional air bag. Ford had a better ride”does make it squat a little more”, to me better mpg when test driving them. Chevy had a rougher ride Between the three. What each manufacturer lacks in, the competition surpasses it. At the end I chose the brand of my grandfathers last truck Ford.

I made the same move, went from an 18 Megacab cummins to a 22 F350 Tremor and it is twice the truck with a much better ride. I have towed with both cummins and power stroke. Cummins hands down even with the Aisin. The HO combo is absolute beast, and you need an F450 to even compare. I love the way Ford looks, both interior and exterior, but I tow a few tractors (CAT 914G), and the Ram 3500 handles it like it's pulling a jet ski. Now, a GMC or Ford might beat Ram in a race up hill, but going down grade, especially with heavy loads, the Ram wins by far. It's very important to be able to have control of your load, rather than just having the ability to pull it. My buddy who writes insurance premiums for hot shot drivers, told me that 80% of the trucks are Ram Cummins and the rest are Ford; none are GMC. There's a reason for that! If you're just towing small loads occasionally, then it doesn't really matter which model you go with. They're all nice. If you're going to be hauling heavy loads often, Ram 3500 is best. Hands down. Including single cab, SRWs.

I would agree that the exhaust brake on the Ford trucks are not as good as the Cummins exhaust brake, but I also think that it may work for some of us but not all of us. As an example, workplaytv has an F-450 which he has towed close to if not over 30k going down a grade and it seemed to work for him. You also have ti give it some credit as it was shown on TFL Truck that the Powerstroke exhaust brake did perform better than the Duramax exhaust brake on the Ike Gauntlet whilst towing a full load.

  • @plaraiii

I will start by saying I love the way the Fords exterior looks over the Ram. However I use my truck for towing also. So having 4000+ Lbs of payload capacity on my Ram 3500SRW is a must. While the fuel mileage does suffer a little with the 6 speed Aisin, when in tow/haul mode the transmission is will down shift paired with the exhaust brake will bring you to a stop in a hurry while towing which for me is a must for towing heavy loads.

I like the linear smoothness of a V/8 and a 10 speed under load and pulling a hill, and did I mention Quiet!Had trucks and cars with built transmissions that would chirp rubber between gears, tough on drive train, thats why they derate them when they up shift, shifting smoothly and positive is where it's at ,just ask ATS,Sun Coast, John Woods ,or Brians Truck shop.Yes exhaust brake could be better .A lot of bashing on the Ford, just keep your Dodge [Ram] and hope you live in a warm climate, if you live in the Rust Belt and have a 5 or 6 yr note on it will have wholes in it before it's payed for.

The exhaust break honestly was the deal breaker for me. It is hands down awesome! Been down plenty of grades with my old set up at 35 mph because any faster and I was completely out of control which is a horrible feeling. So I may not be the fastest up the grades but I feel as though I am in substantially more control going to down hill. That was more important to me than being the fastest up the hill.

Exhaust breaks don’t work that well on level ground. An exhaust brake is a butterfly valves that closes in the hot side of the turbo causing back pressure which slows the vehicle. So the turbo has to be able to spoil up to be effective. You are thinking about a compression break which opens the exhaust valves at TDC using engine compression to slow the the truck

  • @JonnyMitchell57

For interior room, nothing beats a Ford. I’m one of those weirdos who actually wants a bench seat and not a giant console.
The middle seat is actually usable. My 5’1 wife banged her knees on the Ram dash, but fits just fine in my Ford. The ceiling-mounted console also felt lower than the upfitter switches in my Ford.
I pull a travel trailer with weight distribution, so, squat isn’t a big issue for me. I can’t comment on that.
Automatic engine braking + cruise control is the best combo for me, at least towing around the Gulf Coast. I can’t comment on going up into mountains.
Totally agree about Sync vs U-Connect. Even now, Sync feels a full generation behind. Ford just cannot get their heads around Sync. I guess that’s why they’re moving to a new, Android Automotive-based system. (That’s the in-dash system, not the phone-based Android Auto. Google’s product naming is clear as mud.)
As for the rest of the dash, I have dials, not screens, and it works fine. I wish Ford would introduce a remote D-pad for operating the center-dash screen. I got spoiled by my Acura, and now I really don’t like making long reaches to jab at a screen on a bumpy road.
Also agree about that heavy tailgate. I’d like both down- and up-assist.

So just an FYI for you. I decided not to go diesel just because of all the added cost. Ford also offers the optional bed step like Ram on the side for additional $350 Aprox. Yes Chevy, GMC, have it in the bumpers with the optional $1500 for the tail gate one. I can only imagine how heavy that is!!!

I have a 2020 F250 diesel with the high capacity towing package (essentially a 1 ton rear end on the 3/4 ton).
I’ll add to your dislike list: when not in tow/haul mode the 10 speed skips gears. It will go 1-3-5-6-7-8-9-10, or 1-2-4-6-7-8-9-10. The 3-5. (And sometime 4-6) shift has issues when the transmission is “cold”. Could be a firmware thing but it really bugs me.
Uncomfortable seats. We drove from Texas to Montana then back again. That drive back was a killer on my back and right knee. Wow.
I totally agree with the lack of bed steps. GM has that figured out. Ram and Ford should follow.
About the “exhaust brake” on the Ford. It does work, but not near as good as the Ram. I tow only 10000# and the brake really does help with slowing or maintaining speed on downgrades…..until you hit 7% or more. And I do agree it does not really help braking at all. It is better than nothing at all.
I also agree with the lack of usb and other electrical outlets. When you are loaded with 6 people (3 of them teenagers) all with phones and/or gaming things…..it’s a fight to plug in.
I do disagree with one thing. I love the 10 speed. I would take the 10 speed over. 6 speed any day. I love the versatility. I have a 3.31 rear end and with the 10 speed I can have low end pulling power and low rpm’s on the highway.

I looked at a f350 srw platinum the other day and it had a payload of 3970ish lbs compared to my Ram 3500 srw of some where around 3640. I'm not sure what the gvwr on the f350 was but that extra 300lbs would be nice. Love the Ford but I just got back from a trip and the ram exhaust brake is amazing while in the colorado mountains. I think with calibration, the ram with more gears will still be able to keep the exhaust brake strong.

Hey man everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Personally I'm not a fan of the look of a RAM dually, I love the look of my 22 F450. We towed our 5th wheel for the first time this weekend with the F450 and noticed our engine brake was much more prevalent on this F450 over the 19 F350 was, it held us to 30mph down a very steep, long hill in maybe 6th or 7th gear. As far as all the gadgets, I'm old so to me they're more of a distraction, as long as I can get clear incoming phone calls and plays radio stations I'm good ,lol I cant compare the comfort of any other but I can say with certainty that I spend anywhere from 8 to sometimes over 24 hours (plowing snow) in the seat and it doesnt bother me. I guess Im just a Ford fan but as long as any of them get you down the road safely thats all that matters. One more note, I've seen payloads on SRW F350's over 4k (check out Big Truck Big RV's channel) my 19 F350 was a diesel, CC short bed and the payload was 3640lbs

First the capacity and squat would be a lot better if you ditch the Tremor package. That package lowers all towing capabilities. And second don’t use the engine break auto. Just turn it on. The auto is for stopping the truck from speeding up going down hill but will not engage on level ground. As long as the truck is slowing it won’t engage unless you press the brake.

Good video. I towed a lot from Columbus Ohio to Crystal River Florida 960 miles and back and never needed an Exhaust brake on my 2012 F-450. I would then tow from Columbus Ohio to Ebdnsburgh Pennsylvania. Steep inclines on Rt 70 thru West Virginia and with a F-450 still did not need an exchaust brake. Everywhere I towed it was a non-event and easy towing IMHO. Maybe out west going over those high passes the Ram exhaust brake would be needed.

Just my experience, I personally own a 22 Ram 2500 but I drive a 19 F-350 cab & chassis 6.7 6spd 4:10 gear ratio with a PJ 25k trailer for work here in southwest PA. The trailer is 6800lbs empty and haul various equipment and material. My heaviest piece weighs in at just over 17k. Putting me really close to being maxed out on gross. The truck does well but I control the shift points by manually working thru the gears. The same load behind the Ram 3500 drw with 4:10 will literally slowly pull away from the Ford and that trailer is 1000lbs heavier at 7800lbs. Now granted the Ford is defined but I was still surprised. The Ford exhaust brake is weaker but I can counter it with the trans at a higher rpm's. I just know what I'm working with! Now explain to me why Ram in this day and age still have crappy brakes? That's my #1 complaint and #2 is putting the shift points on the steering wheel and a turn knob for the gear selection 🤦‍♂️. But truthfully I would drive any of these new trucks but I've always have been able to get the Ram cheaper in my area.

The exhaust brake is the only legitimate complaint. The rest is nitpicking and preference. I don’t think ford can fix the exhaust brake because of the gearing. I went from an f-250 to an f-450 and the exhaust brake is massively better and the only real difference in my drivetrain is a 4.30 gear ratio.
