Man what a great comparison! This is what a lot of people are interested in. But don’t forget the XLT had the fifth wheel prep package and pro power on board in addition to the high output engine. If you made all those things equal the price spread is going to be quite a bit different. Also the fifth wheel prep and the pro power inverter setup are two very heavy options. And don’t forget the additional upgrades to the HO, cooling etc. that’s why the payload is lower on the XLT.
I just got a 23 350 lariat. When I was ordering I did an apples to apples comparison and was only $4000 more to get the lariat. It seemed like a no brainer to me.
@bobvance- To be fair did build the XLT with the options I was looking for and the base Lariat had a lot of those already. That was also in October 22 to get a 23. The pricing has changed since. Not really sure about the difference in price between a 250 and 350. I still think the Lariat is a no brainer though.
@@Boguardisthe XLT Premium package brings it within $4k with the same options on both trucks. The Lariat includes a lot of the add ons for the XLT so yeah I believe it.
Thank you for the excellent comparison of the the two trims plus add-ons. I just bought a ‘23 XLT Super Cab 6 3/4 box on a special order. It only took six weeks to build and deliver. I don’t care for a whole lot a gadgets so I tend to trim level down. For instance, I like analog gauges as opposed to the LCD screen. On that same note I prefer the smaller 8” center screen to the 12”. I can see the smaller one just as well with less distraction. I like cloth bench seats without the center console. I just like the floor board open between the seats and don’t care for the bulky through console. There are some gadgets I do like but if I can’t order them outside of a huge expensive package then I go with out them or look for a reasonable after market product. I am installing SiriusXM much cheaper than I would have had to pay for the entertainment package it was included in. I tried to order the spray in bed liner but the dealer said the order bank wouldn’t take it. Easy-peasy…I just went to Line-X the week after delivery and had it done better to include a package deal with Bak-Flip tonneau. I also had them do the running boards which match the blacked out OEM rims and side badges I purchased while waiting for the truck. So, it’s like having the appearance package on the sides but with chrome up front and out back. I mean, I believe “to each is own”. Make it what you like because after all it’s your hard earned money.
WTF is up with those setups. The Lariat wins every time in this one. Even with less bolted to it the XLT is 60-70 lbs lower on payload. This is why pickup optioning is so confusing and inscrutable. The idea of an XLT in the $80k range is absurd to me, and here's the proof. Scratch the HO engine; it's not necessary for anything south of 26k lbs. But the 4289 lbs payload on the Lariat is A LOT; it's basically what my 11,500 GVWR 2017 would have if it was rated for 12,400 GVWR. GM's 3500 SRWs have high payloads, too. Guh. It sucks wanting something so much but not even needing it. ;)
I think you make a very fair point and absolutely if your speccing a truck with a lot of options consider the next trim level up and does that represent good value for you. That being said there are builds where the next trim level up adds cost but not a lot in terms of value. In that case the extra couple of thousand for the next trim up isn’t a good bargain.
One of the most important options to me is the Adaptive Cruise Control. That is only available on a Lariat with the Ultimate package and higher trims. Other than that must have feature, I'd get an XLT. My 21 6.7 dually has so much torque, I can't imagine needing more (the high output).
Sorry, but the price of these trucks are just insane. But then $20,000 of every ford truck goes to subsidies the money loosing EV’s and another $30,000 goes I paying employee, their pensions, lifetime medical, and the massively wasteful union work rules that destroy worker productivity. That leaves $10,000 for the dealership and then$10,000-$20000 profit to Ford.
Adaptive cruise control is one of those things that will spoil you. If you've never had it you won't miss it and will consider it another unnecessary gimmick or expense. But after having it it's hard to go back to a vehicle that doesn't have it. I made three round trips from Florida to Maine this year and when in heavy traffic it's so nice to be able to have the vehicle keep pace with traffic, especially in stop and go traffic jams. I also find myself setting it if I'm going to be a little distracted for a second, like setting the gps or whatever else might take a little attention away, even in town. Just a little added safety if someone slams on brakes or pulls out in front of you.
@@bret9741 perhaps workers should get 15$ an hour and work 7 days a week while slaving away to make sure ford can make a profit? why don't you send ford a large check since you're so worried about them?
One hidden upgrade of Lariat and plus trims, the front row side windows are Acoustic Laminated.🤑 One question for you JB, do you feel the 23 super duty’s steering input are heavier than the previous gen particularly the higher trims? Ford doesn’t offer Adaptive Steering on the 23 MY because of chip shortage I guess.
Hey dude you know your stuff and I enjoyed watching your video I learned a lot! I think the same style comparison on an XL vs XLT would be helpful as well. Thanks!
I just bought a 23 F350 powerstroke 4x4 short bed, crew cab with the STX package and the same 20” wheels that are on this Lariat and my MSRP was $70,900. Has 360 camera package and I feel this is the best equipped truck for the money.
STX definitely a great price point and a lot of functionality. 360 cameras just make sense to be standard in these. XLT is actually quite a bit better. Been building them online and for within a couple thousand dollars, you can get a fully spec'd XLT premium with console and bigger screen when compared to STX. the full LCD gauges and larger screen on XLT premium really make the truck experience POP. only 2-3k difference in price. Seems like completely different truck when you sit in it.
@@factionfx I do wish I got the bigger center screen for trailer viewing but I absolutely hate the digital gauges offered in this truck. To get an XLT with premium pack you also have to get sport appearance pack too. So to get an XLT with those two alone makes the MSRP $77,060 so that’s $7k more than mine to get digital dash, a bigger center screen, B&O stereo, running boards, slider back glass and remote start. Not worth the difference for those items on a work truck.
I have a 2023 F250 Lariat super duty and if it was up to ME I would have ordered a XLT. The wife HAD to have leather! Ordered mine in October 22 and received in April 23 and it was just under $80K. The sticker was just over $80K, but the dealer honored the original quote. ALSO, I ordered a regular Lariat and did not get the Ultimate package. The regular Lariat has the vinyl door cards and dash. Also has two tone seats which are not quite as nice as the Ultimate package. I bet Ford does away with either the XLT or Lariat one day. The last FORD XLT with leather was in 2014 I believe (my friend has one).
So I would tend to agree with you mostly on this however I want to point out everyone has a budget. Maybe that budget is firmly 82,000. Maybe it’s a lot less. But regardless being able to spec the XLT (or an LT Chevy) with the options they are allowing now is a good way to keep people on budget. Because a loaded LT or XLT will always be 3-5k less than a loaded LTZ or Lariat. In this case that’s the difference in getting the new HO Powerstroke. So just keep that in mind. Everyone has a budget whether it’s 50k or 100k.
Here in Canada, the difference between a Lariat and an XLT With the same engine 6.7 reg power stroke is 6000$ . This with the same or equivalent equipment, the sports package is costlier here too because you can order the XLT luxury package and it automatically comes with the 4100$ sports package no matter what. So Ford wants you to buy a Lariat vs. an XLT. Good point great video
I understand your point; but in my case I had a 2001 XLT then a Lariat in 2004, back to a XLT in 2015. I ordered my 2021 F350 XLT. There were items on the Lariat that I didn't use or did not want; such as the leather seats, 20" wheels (tires are a lot more $$$ at replacement time) power adjustable pedals, up-fitter switches and a couple of other minor items. Net/net for me was about $5k savings. But I do agree, it makes more sense in the long run to order a Lariat vs a loaded up XLT with the same options.
Yeah, I caught myself doing this with a Chevy 3500 LT. Grabbed almsot every option available and it was only a few grand cheaper than an almost fully loaded LTZ, but the LTZ had more stuff that you can't get on the LT at all (like power extending mirrors, the Bose sound system, ventilated front seats, etc.). Only reason I didn't move up to the High Country from there is I prefer the interior coloring of the LTZ and want either the Z71 Sport Package, or the all-chrome front, and don't like that the High Country gets a painted bumper but a chrome grill.
The XLT had the HO engine, gooseneck prep, and Aux switches.. the Lariat had leather, heated/cooled seats, power pedals, Spray in bed liner etc. add the HO engine, aux switched and gooseneck prep, you’d be about $4k more on the Lariat. As he said, I’d prefer the lariat extras for not much more than a full spec’d XLT.
Do a comparison on XL and XLT. I spent just over $20,000 less on my XL diesel. Full tow bed and snow prep from factory. I will forscan to turn on a few things like manual regeneration and more.
It’s funny how the difference between the half tons xlt and heavy duties.. I just got 23 f150 xlt and it’s very well equipped both power seats in the front dual zone climate the list goes on.
I just returned from Brandon Ford in Brandon, FL. The word from the manager here is that a 2023 can no longer be ordered and Monday 17 July 2023 the 2024 Super Duty will be available to order. They have a 15k markup on their Super Duty Trucks
Would be great if you can do a video comparing the HO to the standard diesel towing heavy load zero to 60 and quarter mile. And also seeing what gear they are in under a steep grade.
I bought a 2020 F30 XLT in March 2020 and it cost me $80k CAD (about 60kUSD at the time). It has the XLT premium package, console, heated seats, panoramic roof, 360 camera, fifth wheel prep, long bed FX4 package. I wanted leather so I put custom catskinz in it for $2k CAD that match the platinum leather seats (much nicer leather than the lariats come with in that year). I then went ahead and bought aftermarket LED headlights for $2500CAD. I had chrome bumpers so I painted them for around $1200CAD. The asking price for a lariat was 91kCAD+tax at the time. In my opinion I came out with a Lariat sport for $6k+tax less than buying a lariat. Is the dual climate control worth it?
It's definitely worth noting that if you want an XLT in a dually configuration, you cannot get the XLT premium package, or the XLT sport package which really strips down the truck. Idk why Ford decided to leave those packages out in the dually but I dislike it. I can maybe understand the XLT appearance package not being available for the dually but at least give us the XLT premium package. C'mon FORD!
When i build two of the same truck and select the same options its a 13k difference between lariat and xlt. What am i missing or is this no longer relevant?
On those two trucks the Seats alone are worth the extra 1000.00 bucks, not just the Leather but both are power! Now even if you added the 2500.00 for the upgrade engine still a much better value. Now can you really feel the 25 horsepower and Torque difference??
I thought the same but interest rates won’t be going down for a while so I just pulled the trigger and ordered one still got till spring before it arrives so hopefully they do go down but I’m not holding my breath
Agreed... interest rates thru the roof and all super overpriced no matter the manufacturer no one wants to stand behind their warrantees fuel prices thru the roof I think I'll buy a horse🤣🤣🤣
Xlt is the best in my opinion. Not too much nonsense. Personally i have a 2018 f150 xlt, without the tow package. The interior is a dream for me. Nice cloth seats, no infotainment. The way a truck should be. Shame infotainment is standard now i just dont like having a clunky computer screen in my vehicles that doesnt always work properly. Nonetheless the xlt is the better deal. Plenty luxurious for my taste. Cozy seats.
Can you all imagine the repair cost? When the warranty is up $$$$$$$ Big bucks ! So you spend this type of money? For a warranty that last 100k miles ! Then your SOL You could buy an older used truck with 100k miles for half the price! Something to consider
I’ve had a paid off 2018 F250 for a minute and was thinking about selling for a new truck. When I went to price out a new Ford, I changed my mine. People are justifying the huge price increase pre vs post plandemic, ignorant. GM seems to be a little more level headed when you compare features/trims, so if I decide to get something it will be GM this time. Ford is too proud of their “upgrades”. These so called upgrades are standard on Tacomas….haha Push start LED lighting Lane assist Climate control And I’m sure more..
The demand was created by spoiled Americans being told you can’t have it during a lockdown. That made folks lose their mind. How dare you tell an American no?! Now we are paying like 30-40% more for purchase price. Thanks! Most buying heavy duty trucks in Texas use them as daily drivers to their desk job. I paid $53k (after $8k rebate) for a fully loaded out 2018 XLT in early 2019 new with 1.9 apr. The only thing I don’t have is AC seats, climate control or lane assist. What I do have… Heated seats Large infotainment screen Power folding mirrors Captain seats with electric Power rear glass Tow package and fifth wheel prep Sprayed liner Fender liners Put 20” platinum takeoffs for $800 Morimoto LEDs all the way around. Sitting at 60k miles
Ford finally added Adaptive Cruise on lower trims with the Tow Technology Package with Job 2 trucks. Job 1 (early 2023 builds) no adaptive cruise was available on XLT trims with the Super Duty.
Nice review. Useful. Do you think the Lariat leather seats are as comfortable, including on long highway drives, as those on the Platinum, or maybe the Tremor or Raptor? I also prefer the leather to the cloth.
JB Team, I have a question that I have not seen addressed in your videos. I am wondering why I should choose the 3.55 rear end over the 3.31 for 5th wheel towing with a 6.7L HO. I have seen some people say the transmission compensates enough to make the 3.31 functional while getting better fuel economy. Thoughts?
My Ford salesperson told me that not only do certain options slow down the build, but also the higher trim levels will slow things down considerably. I was wondering on the gas long bed, does it come with the larger tank as well?
Great video. Good information to know. Someone told me that the 23‘s come with electric parking brakes and with electric parking breaks you get four wheel braking. Whats you knowledge on this? And maybe it might be something you could cover in a future video on Ford electric brakes. That’ll be real nice for loading / unloading vehicles / construction equipment onto and off of trailers. Thx JB
Curious why Ford got rid of adjustable pedals on the '23 models? My 2020 has them and makes it a lot easier for my wife to drive my truck. She's only 5' 4".😂
the trims do get nicer but I just dont see 10,20 or 30k nicer....IDK....at some point you can just buy another truck....and I have a High country but after owning it I just dont see that much more involved for the money absolutely correct though if your going to spec out a lower trim to the hilt just go next trim up.....you will make it up in resale alone....lower trims optioned to the max get slammed on trade in
Ram Bighorn 3500 high spec with HO and air suspension 88K with only 3680 payload. 2500 AT4 is the way to go boys vs any Ram. I'm not sure how they sell them. Biggest problem with Ford is the low production makes it impossible to make any deal under msrp.
I went to gm and built an at4 for 110k cad that was their best offer so I went to ford and ordered a platinum which msrp was 120k and they matched gms price at 110k so no brainer for me to order a platinum than an at4 for the same price
I agree. I don't know why people do that (get an XLT and add a TON of options, which sometimes makes it more expensive than a Lariat). Even if you dont want leather seats, you could just put nice seat covers on leather and still better off with Lariat.
That XLT is better than the Lariat in almost every other way other than the seats. Better engine, better options, WAY more options. The XLT is just the better deal. It all depends on what you want. Similarly optioned, the lariat would probably be almost at 100k, and what do you get, laminated windows and leather seats? No thanks. I will take the lower trim truck all day .
lariat ultimate is the sweet spot for me... can't ever come up with a reason to spend the crazy money they want for platinums and up.. just don't see it

Ford gave up on its customers IMHO. I’ve been to Ford dealers lately and extremely disappointed in the quality to price. Folks keep buying them though, so Ford must be thinking, “let’s do less, so we can get more profit”. Toyota is about to smash American midsize trucks and if they come back with FJ cruiser, that crap they call a bronco will be killed. Let’s put a moped engine in the long awaited Bronco. 😂😂 And when they realize it sucks, let’s release a raptor version that extremely overpriced…yea yea
I've been all about painted bumpers for a while but I'm starting to not like them. Have to PPF them immediately and then be careful what car washes you go through or what cleaning products you use. And the chrome looks bigger/meaner.

Do they build a super duty with the same motor as the vehicle doing the burnout? Cause that thing is sounding pretty darn good!!!! 😊😊
Lariat for me- need to look pretty going to lumber yards with lighted vanity mirror
Great Information !!
Which trim level f-250 has the keyfob power tailgate open/close & the step tht comes out of the tailgate?
On those two trucks the Seats alone are worth the extra 1000.00 bucks, not just the Leather but both are power! Now even if you added the 2500.00 for the upgrade engine still a much better value. Now can you really feel the 25 horsepower and Torque difference??
One other exception is the regular cab only comes in the xlt.
I'm actaully in the market, but interest rates are so horrible I decided to wait.
Cozy seats.
I would say that the reason that one has less payload was because it was the HO powerstroke. That adds a little more weight!
More likely the 5th wheel prep and pro power onboard generator were bigger factors. Good video, and interesting to see the comparison.
Can you all imagine the repair cost? When the warranty is up $$$$$$$ Big bucks ! So you spend this type of money? For a warranty that last 100k miles ! Then your SOL
You could buy an older used truck with 100k miles for half the price! Something to consider
Why would you want front parking sensors?
I’ve had a paid off 2018 F250 for a minute and was thinking about selling for a new truck.
When I went to price out a new Ford, I changed my mine.
People are justifying the huge price increase pre vs post plandemic, ignorant.
GM seems to be a little more level headed when you compare features/trims, so if I decide to get something it will be GM this time.
Ford is too proud of their “upgrades”. These so called upgrades are standard on Tacomas….haha
Push start
LED lighting
Lane assist
Climate control
And I’m sure more..
What I do have…
Heated seats
Large infotainment screen
Power folding mirrors
Captain seats with electric
Power rear glass
Tow package and fifth wheel prep
Sprayed liner
Fender liners
Put 20” platinum takeoffs for $800
Morimoto LEDs all the way around.
Sitting at 60k miles
can't get adaptive cruise on XLT
I have it on my F150, which is a 2021 XLT. Maybe it is different on Super Duty?
Ford finally added Adaptive Cruise on lower trims with the Tow Technology Package with Job 2 trucks. Job 1 (early 2023 builds) no adaptive cruise was available on XLT trims with the Super Duty.
Nice review. Useful. Do you think the Lariat leather seats are as comfortable, including on long highway drives, as those on the Platinum, or maybe the Tremor or Raptor? I also prefer the leather to the cloth.
Thank you for this
80k plus! Good God! 🤦♂️😂
The Lariat is a no brainer in this case.
Rumor is you can’t even order the higher trim levels of the F250 & F350 right now. Maybe that explains the juiced up lower trim levels?
JB Team, I have a question that I have not seen addressed in your videos. I am wondering why I should choose the 3.55 rear end over the 3.31 for 5th wheel towing with a 6.7L HO. I have seen some people say the transmission compensates enough to make the 3.31 functional while getting better fuel economy. Thoughts?
I have a 2017 with 3.55 gears. It’s more than capable for pulling 5th wheels. I transport rvs with it.
A base xl f350 4x4 with the Power stroke! That's the way to go if you're looking for a work pig! All that fancy technology will break at some point
My Ford salesperson told me that not only do certain options slow down the build, but also the higher trim levels will slow things down considerably.
I was wondering on the gas long bed, does it come with the larger tank as well?
Yes the long bed gas truck comes with the larger fuel tank as well
Great video. Thx JB
Leather seats are a deal breaker
Curious why Ford got rid of adjustable pedals on the '23 models? My 2020 has them and makes it a lot easier for my wife to drive my truck. She's only 5' 4".😂
If that was actually the out the door price I would buy it tomorrow
the trims do get nicer but I just dont see 10,20 or 30k nicer....IDK....at some point you can just buy another truck....and I have a High country but after owning it I just dont see that much more involved for the money
absolutely correct though if your going to spec out a lower trim to the hilt just go next trim up.....you will make it up in resale alone....lower trims optioned to the max get slammed on trade in
Ram Bighorn 3500 high spec with HO and air suspension 88K with only 3680 payload. 2500 AT4 is the way to go boys vs any Ram. I'm not sure how they sell them. Biggest problem with Ford is the low production makes it impossible to make any deal under msrp.
One word, Cummins.
I’m in a Ford now and thinking about GM.
Not a fan of Ram, had a 2014 mega cab.
Remember it’s not dodge/ram any more it’s a fiat the only thing that saved Chrysler/dodge was Cummins which makes the most expensive profit
@@victorvillafranco8772 Right….. cause Fiat had no influence on all of Chryslers interior designs that people came to love…….
I bought a 2023 f250 crew cab with the high output powerstroke with 430 gears and it's the fastest truck in my city
You sure about that? 4.30 gears are only available with the diesel on the F450. Lowest gears on a F250 diesel are 3.55.
Most people that do this don’t want leather.
Take xlt kids and save that $10+k you can’t get better after market upgrades cheaper
$85,000 for a pickup truck??? Can't believe people will pay that. Probably double what it should be. Guess I've been around too long!
lariat ultimate is the sweet spot for me... can't ever come up with a reason to spend the crazy money they want for platinums and up.. just don't see it
The Ford interiors are just cheap as hell looking. I ordered a HO 6.7 Lariat but didn't take it due to the interior.
Gmc and chevy are now the most refined and elegant interiors…quite the switch up lol
@@Joeybago12gree, especially the High Country, AT4, and Denali. Beats Ram, and I own a 1500 Limited.
Edit: hell, even the LTZ/SLT are pretty close to my Limited for way less money (than the HD Ram Limited).
They are nice and the AT4 is very nice with the tan / beige trim.
The bad part is.... have ya seen the video of the 2500 Shifter.... right in the way of the new updated screens on GM/Chevy. I'm sure they'll fix that next refresh.
I wouldn't want either ford or Gmc cheap optioned truck, start with atleast high country or king ranch to get nice vehicle
And when they realize it sucks, let’s release a raptor version that extremely overpriced…yea yea
Cloth seats for me or else.
100K work truck when you do taxes, tag and title is ridiculous
Ford needs to make that side step in the box optional.....because it sucks!
Ford has by far the worst taillights! Ugh come on!
They are crap! I bought a 2023 F-250 the transmission needs to be replaced. Back ordered! Buyer beware! Haven’t had my truck for 8 weeks
i hate painted bumpers
Thanks for showing the payload as that is important if you want a 5th wheel.
I wish the xlt let you get the premium package with chrome. They make you add the sport package with it.
See, it's all subjective. My 2017 Lariat has chrome all over but I really think I would've taken the painted sport option instead (I bought it used).
I've been all about painted bumpers for a while but I'm starting to not like them. Have to PPF them immediately and then be careful what car washes you go through or what cleaning products you use. And the chrome looks bigger/meaner.
@@SliderFury1 And painted bumpers scratch easier off-road. Chrome is tougher.
HO and 5th wheel on SRW. Tells you everything you need to know about whoever spec’d that truck. 🤦♂️
Hands down ugliest SD truck
I clicked off after you rebaited us at the beginning im not gonna sit through 16min
