I am in the same boat. Just got one for free. It started right up with new battery so at least it seems to run good. But basically nothing else works. So this video will be nice. My mom is getting old and this mower will be perfect for her little lawn in town.
I rescued one of these from the curbside many years ago. It was pretty much complete, but had the wrong (too small) blade, and the shift cables were gone. I was able to get the right blade, and splurged on a side-discharge adapter, as I don't bag. The biggest challenge was the shift cables. I refused to pay $65 !! for a new pair, and wasn't able to rig an aftermarket one. So, for about $20 in hardware, I engineered a mechanical shifter shaft & F-N-R lever that sticks out of the fender opening, just ahead of the left rear wheel. My yard has some tight spaces to mow, just right for the Yard Bug!
That's awesome you created a part to make it work and gave it a few more years of service.. great job.. I loved that little guy. I donated it to someone that could use it but I miss it
@Josh Alliston check that the cable is not rusted and frozen .. that's the biggest issue with those. 2 cables .. one for forward and 1 for reverse.. if they are frozen nothing will move.. if not sure just Uninstaller them and move lever on gear box by hand
@@MunkyWrench Yeah. I checked online, and found that the shift-cables were a chronic problem with these machines. Then, after wasting time, and about $12, trying to rig a universal cable, completely eliminating those cables was the only way to go.
@@sunbeam8866 I used uni cables and just ran them out the side of the machine.. pulled one when I wanted forward.. pulled the other for neutral and Rev.. wasn't spending $60 on cables

I was wondering if you know where the starter relay is on the bug. I just purchased one that will only start if you jump off the starter won't start by the key. i also have to replace the drive belt.
Just caught your video on YT did not know you existed until now and subbed. Glad we were not one of the channels you checked but our video was on a Bug and we just replaced an idler pulley but Jake did put up a parts diagram showing both drive belts on our unit were 5/8 x 36.25 inches i believe. An interesting note for your viewers many of the variable speed pulleys call for 5L or 5/8" belts but you may find many that can only use the what we call 2/3rds 5/8 belt. We are Eliminator Performance.

Yes those cables rust quick when outside.. u have to disconnect both drive cables and free them up or replace.. and u can swing the gearbox into neutral by hand while your under there.. they are between rear wheel and frame.. hard to get to
Is there a way to alter this mower so we don't have to use the grass catcher? It's so small that every two short rows of mowing, a person has to empty the grass catcher. I would like it to throw the grass so I don't have to stop.
They originally made a plug that was put in the opening of the deck to make it a mulcher. U won't find one these days but u can buy a thin sheet of steel at your local hardware store. Cut it and rivet it over the deck hoke and your all set
Can you explain how the go pedal cable is hooked up on the yard bug my pedal is hard to push like one of the wires in the cable iis hooked up wrong or is seized up, thanx
That's very possible.. the cables get rusty and seized all the time.. also there's a axel that goes through the center of the pedals. I pulled it out cause mine was rusty.. took a wire wheel on grinder and polished the axle as well as the inside sleeves with a drill and small wheel.. then greased and put back together cause mine barely moved
@@MunkyWrench when I looked underneath the yard bug I found the upper drive belt had moved to the lower drive belt position on the variable speed pulley this happened when I was cutting grass and the pedal got loose and pliable. But then the machine stopped.. The pulleys are all tight so why would this happen? A new belt maybe??
@kenkeenan1388 I believe it only hooks up to one idler pulley .. it's been over a year since I did that one but the pedal should only move the idler pulley that puts pressure on the drive belt
Hey wouldnt happen to know off hand what size the tires are eh lol my yardbug is at work i cut the grass there on the side my tires are cracked really bad surprised their holding air lol anyways im trying to order tires and i forgot the paper i wrote the tire sizes down on at work lol i cant remember the sizes seeing that they cost an arm and a leg for those tiny tires i dont wanna take a chance and order the wrong ones lol i cant find the sizes anywhere ive been looking at photos and videos to see if i can read the size off the tires haha not having any luck il get em monday at work if i cant find the size here online
I bought the same thing for $80 a few weeks ago. Tis a fine little mower, but mine does not go in reverse under its own power. I can push it in neutral or reverse, but no engagement with the shifter. I can see the linkage move at the transmission but nothing happens. Any ideas? Like you I'm not spending any additional money on it. Right now I just swing my leg off the machine and push it as far as I need.
When u put the gear in reverse with your fingers is it actually going in reverse. These lil guys get dirty sometimes and don't shift all the way into reverse. Mine didn't til I removed the cabled and got full motion
