Just to help you out. Your pressure was way to high and your fan was too narrow. All of this resulted in too heavy of coats and your paint did not flash off evenly. Hence your runs. Pretty freaking cool paint job! Hope this helps.

@greezyzgurage bringing up memories for me. Grew up in a wood shop, wasn't good at trim work but was excellent at paints/stains/glazes/distressing and prep so pops kept me on that side of the shop. Love to dance 🕺 Mixing chems and maintaining pressurized equipment led me to be a chemical engineer. Pop always said to "get a degree so ya won't have to work like this the rest your life" so I did....but I'm certain I'd be happier and wealthier had I kept dancing in the paint room
That crinkle happens when the outer layer has dried but the paint underneath is still wet. Basically not waiting long enough between coats, especially when doing heavy coats. It is possible to shoot it all in 1 day but you would need to use indirect heat or if you were in a cleaner and warmer environment you can use a fan to blow across the item to dry it a bit faster. If you are using water based paints the air to not be uniform, not blowing in 1 direction. To help with getting a slick and we look it is best to let the base coat sit for a day or 2 then wet sand very gently with 800-1200 grit. It helps knock down the highs a little bit. Letting the primer dray over night and then using a ~400 grit scuff pad to scuff up the primer, don't use much pressure as you are only wanting to scuff the surface and not go through the primer to the metal. Given the colder temperatures you have to be careful storing your paints and flashing, drying, and curing times will be longer. I am by no means a seasoned painter, I taking courses at our local Community College for body work, and having a blast. I have made virtually every screw up at some point, good news I learned how to fix it, bad news I had to spend time fixing it. rofl

The crinkling is because there was too much material applied, that’s why you see it in the creases where it pooled on the speed shape. Ideally 2-3 light primer coats, let sit 8 hours. 1 light (tack) base coat followed by 1 or 2 medium / full base coats, Let that sit 8 hours. Then your pearls. Then 1 light (tack) clear coat, followed by 2 heavy (wet) clear coats. I like to give the clear 30 minutes to flash off. No need to sand / scuff in between unless things sit for more than 24 hours. I say it turned out extremely well and about the only problem you didn’t encounter that I normally do is the freshly painted piece falling onto the ground! Otherwise keep up the fine work 👍 you learn far more from a mistake than a perfect job!
Thanks, I definitely thought the sag was from too much material. I thought i heard if it flashes too long the next coat won't stick so I tried to not wait too long. Next time I'll make sure to go lighter on the coats and give it more time between. I still have a feeling the krinkle is from temperature as I was working with reducer for 55-65* on the intercoat and clear.
I think it looks killer for doin it outside. I think you would have a lot less trouble if you start with just a urethane base instead of the oil base rustoleum. And have an even better end result. Keep up the good work!
Agree , but if you do it right a hardener mixed in the Rustoleum still makes for a killer base , especially if you are looking for long term rust control . I’m spraying an old Duster at the moment with Rustoleum Sunrise Red and mixing some decent hardener in with it . I would swear that the end product I have on the firewall and inner fenders I have right now is as hard as some of the old Imron aircraft paint I used to spray that is toxic AF .
Dude that looks fantastic. I have a similar " paint booth" here in South Florida. Bugs, tree bits, on and off rain along with huge humidity swings makes for a challenging paint session. It really does look beautiful. Thank you for sharing your process.
used color shift on a project several months ago and was easy to remove over spray and after a little trial and error it came out pretty good . i used color shift pink to green rustoleum and over red and kona brown . didnt shift as well since it was just trim and emblem but awesome stuff.
Some pearls don't spray as well over certain colors usually need a black, white or color matching. However some can also be sprayed over various colors just depends what the manufacturer recommends

Thank you! Yeah the acetone is for fastest dry times possible since weather can be quite cold and inconsistent up here. Mineral spirits is another slower drying alternative which is why we use it for gun cleaning. We sprayed the tube fenders and rockers last fall in nearly freezing temperatures with good results.
The "krinkling" could happen from using two different materials or systems. Never worry about orange peal in any coat, apply several more coats of clear and learn to color sand. And adjust pressure and the gun. But well done!
Thank you! That's why we have wanted to try it out as it seemed like it was rasta themed. Admittedly in some light it is a bit earth toned instead of in your face, a bit more rainbow trout I think. But that aspect is growing on us a bit over time too.

Seriously though , don’t use the pressure gauge off of the compressor for your gun pressure , no matter which gun I use ( and I work with 50.00 to 900.00 guns , using the cheaper stuff on a more usual basis) get yourself a really good pressure regulator for the gun . I rarely go above 28psi on my HVLP or my LVLP setups. Looks good though ! Interesting color shifts .
We had a regulator on the gun but because of pressure drop in the line once spraying had it set to 50 which admittedly was too much. The gun is rated to 43 so we were kinda shooting for that but obviously will get better results tuning it in for each material or just lowering it across the board closer to 30. It's actually called neo chrome. But very cool you got this look from rustolium I'm a very firm believer in rustolium I painted my drift truck 9 yrs ago and it just this yr needed a touch up. Full satin black with light silver flake. Looks shinny but not
The company that made the products call it hyper shift or super shift pearl and or flake. I think it is also referred to as interference pearls. But either way we like to play with them on our basic hardware store paint. it opens a world of possibilities not available before. That's impressive your truck has held up for 9 years with rustoleum. Is it kept outside?
Organic Vapor Cartridge Respirator does not work for Urethane coatings that contain isocaynate. Positive Pressure should be used. You do not want to become sensitized. Stay safe.

I'm thinking about trying the finish 1 next time, but I notice they have different speed/ temp ranges and I would like to get whatever is most comparable to the Majic stuff. Also hoping I can still just use a 4:3:1 mixing ratio like I do with the majic. You definitely get 2 times the material for the same cost going with the finish 1. Curious if you have any insight?
@@forum8fox - heavens yes 👍 I use Medium for everything here in Syracuse, NY. Typically the room is around 70•F when I paint but it cools down when I turn the fans on. I’ve never had an issue. If it’s cooler, just give it a bit longer to flash between coats. I wait 30 minutes anyhow between coats which is far excessive. But I don’t follow many rules to begin with! Make sure your first coat is a light tack coat, then a medium wet coat, then a full wet coat. I often will let it cure overnight and spray clear coat on top. SpeedoKote is a good product for the money, But SPI Universal is my favorite 🤑 A clear coat will prevent the UV rays from chalking the enamel paint after 2-3 years.
@@forum8fox - mixing ratios are the same and absolutely do not stress about getting anything “exact,” a little more or less has no effect. I honestly typically don’t measure the hardener, I do use “Mountain” brand mixing cups but you can use any empty bottle, don’t get paralysis of the analysis. Enamel Paint is quite forgiving, the real issues are caused by poor (dirty/ lazy) prep work OR too heavy on the initial coat.
Nvmnd I think I figured it out. You were saying to much the pearl with the color blender/reducer 1:1. I don't know why I thought it was going into the clear. Glad I didn't do that though.

I think it looks pretty good considering you painted it about the worst atmosphere for painting, Back in the day we used to get by with painting outdoors and you would never know it but that was in the day of lacquer paints that dried quickly and had to be sanded between coats and clear coated and buffed anyway,
Thanks, we certainly don't expect perfection but it's nice to be able to get a little more creative with it and superior durability than rattle can. We expect some damage from the trail so don't worry about sanding between coats and buffing. The finish is miles ahead of rattle can to us as it is. But hopefully we learn and get better as we plan to spray some entire vehicles in the near future.
Your wrinkling is likely from a reaction between the rustoleum and topcoats. Rustoleum is oil based, quit using that if youre going to topcoat, and just get some regular black base...
Rustoleum as base with a 2k over the top is tricky. I've done it with no issues, and also had issues. I have a buddy with a youtube channel that does it all the time with no issue.(moore motorsports garage) his newest car is rust oleum with spraymax 2k clear over it.
@@sinformant I don't doubt that some people have success, likely relates to how much solvent is left. Its just a lot of work, and prep to mess with that stuff, when there isn't that huge of a price difference in most cases. People originally started using rustoleum because it was cheap, versus buying some single stage. When you start into two stage, then its really all the other stuff that starts getting expensive, a can of plain base isnt all that much compared to the price of a can of rustoleum. Already have to buy hardener, and reducer, etc with all this topcoats. I don't get it really.
we looked into tamco base and it was more expensive, and you would still need reducer and all the top coat unless you like opaque paint. there is also convenience to getting the rustoleum at numerous local hardware stores. which can also be helpful for touch up on a rig that see's the rocks. We have done other paint jobs like this and not had a reaction like the others shown in the video (rockers, tube fenders, bumper, frame stiffners, skid plate etc. so it's hard to say if that's what's the cause or if it's temperature. as i said on the speed shape one side (shaded) was perfect. though I appreciate your comment and it will be food for thought.

Thanks, the Jeep has been a bit beat over the years between the rocks and someone t boning/ totaling their car on it. If you watched our recent wheeling video you are correct about the trail collateral damage to the paint. though I left the bumper at home curing on that trip.
Kills me how some people think they can get quality paint jobs with $30 Amazon paint guns. They are freaking garbage. Invest in a good gun. I use a Satajet 2000 digital 1.3 nozzle that I've had since 2000 and it still works like new to this day. It was my clear gun back then but I use it for base now. I use the Satajet 5000 1.3 nozzle now for clear and that thing s amazing. I spray my clear around 20-22 psi and my clear comes out like glass. Seriously though, invest in a good gun. Even something like the DeVILBISS Startingline 2 gun spray gun kit which you can get for around $275. You'll be surprised how different they spray and how much they'll improve your work. Also, turn that air pressure down man. Sounds like your spraying @ like double the pressure you should be spraying at and open up the spray pattern a bit.
Thanks for the insight, we will definitely keep that in mind! considering how new we are to paint it was hard to justify spending that kind of money on a gun. We have since painted our first entire vehicle and had pretty good results with the cheap amazon gun. We definitely turned the psi down as per everyone's suggestions. Once we get more practice and our skills exceed the guns ability we will probably get some nicer guns.

Yes, It was painting like an airless, I've never seen a cup gun in that high of a application/pressure rate. (primer coat)

Baudette technique work on an old steel wheels for a trailer
I use Acme Finish 1 hardener instead of the Majic brand. I don’t use Japan dryer when I’m also using hardener.

The pressure on that gun sounds like its on kill mode.. like way over 35psig

We expect some damage from the trail so don't worry about sanding between coats and buffing. The finish is miles ahead of rattle can to us as it is. But hopefully we learn and get better as we plan to spray some entire vehicles in the near future.

Your wrinkling is likely from a reaction between the rustoleum and topcoats. Rustoleum is oil based, quit using that if youre going to topcoat, and just get some regular black base...
Rustoleum as base with a 2k over the top is tricky. I've done it with no issues, and also had issues. I have a buddy with a youtube channel that does it all the time with no issue.(moore motorsports garage) his newest car is rust oleum with spraymax 2k clear over it.
@@sinformant I don't doubt that some people have success, likely relates to how much solvent is left. Its just a lot of work, and prep to mess with that stuff, when there isn't that huge of a price difference in most cases. People originally started using rustoleum because it was cheap, versus buying some single stage. When you start into two stage, then its really all the other stuff that starts getting expensive, a can of plain base isnt all that much compared to the price of a can of rustoleum. Already have to buy hardener, and reducer, etc with all this topcoats. I don't get it really.
we looked into tamco base and it was more expensive, and you would still need reducer and all the top coat unless you like opaque paint. there is also convenience to getting the rustoleum at numerous local hardware stores. which can also be helpful for touch up on a rig that see's the rocks. We have done other paint jobs like this and not had a reaction like the others shown in the video (rockers, tube fenders, bumper, frame stiffners, skid plate etc. so it's hard to say if that's what's the cause or if it's temperature. as i said on the speed shape one side (shaded) was perfect. though I appreciate your comment and it will be food for thought.

Thanks, the Jeep has been a bit beat over the years between the rocks and someone t boning/ totaling their car on it. If you watched our recent wheeling video you are correct about the trail collateral damage to the paint. though I left the bumper at home curing on that trip.
Kills me how some people think they can get quality paint jobs with $30 Amazon paint guns. They are freaking garbage. Invest in a good gun. I use a Satajet 2000 digital 1.3 nozzle that I've had since 2000 and it still works like new to this day. It was my clear gun back then but I use it for base now. I use the Satajet 5000 1.3 nozzle now for clear and that thing s amazing. I spray my clear around 20-22 psi and my clear comes out like glass. Seriously though, invest in a good gun. Even something like the DeVILBISS Startingline 2 gun spray gun kit which you can get for around $275. You'll be surprised how different they spray and how much they'll improve your work. Also, turn that air pressure down man. Sounds like your spraying @ like double the pressure you should be spraying at and open up the spray pattern a bit.
Thanks for the insight, we will definitely keep that in mind! considering how new we are to paint it was hard to justify spending that kind of money on a gun. We have since painted our first entire vehicle and had pretty good results with the cheap amazon gun. We definitely turned the psi down as per everyone's suggestions. Once we get more practice and our skills exceed the guns ability we will probably get some nicer guns.
