Thanks for sharing. My issue with the factory silencer is the look, not the sound even it if could be nicer. It's a big piece which hides the wheel, and it's sad. And Euro5 (I'm located in Belgium, don't know for US) is not an excuse when I compare with e.g. Ducati Diavel. Looks like they just don't care. What I would like is a two silencers, one on each side "under" seat, in fact on each side near the top.
Thanx Ricky. Appreciate all the time & money put into this. Have the R1250RS ( standard pipe) and been considering upgrade. This gave me a lot to reconsider on whole subject 👍👍
That has been most helpful! I think your speculation that a big silencer is needed to allow for a sizeble length of convoluted interior tubing is probably right. Like you, I shall either keep the original (satin chrome) monster or save up for the Akro. You have just saved me wasting my money (again). Many thanks 😁
Thank you for sharing your experience Rikky! I suspect you'll be happy with the Akrapovic can once you shell out for it. Watching your saga makes me appreciate a lot that my R1200R came fitted with it from the start.
Don't be too hard on yourself. A bunch of us are just not able to leave a bike alone and I'm also guilty of that. Bought myself a Yamaha MT09SP; it's an SP I said so I won't need to change anything. Changed the brakes, the handlebar, the seat, levers but at least left the exhaust alone, in the first few months! Just can't help myself!
I ended up buying a used Akra from ebay... I have to admit it's probably the best option for the bike even though I'm not a fan of the looks... a video is on the way!

Well for someone on a limited budget you’ve sure spent a lot of money Mr T. Hi TT thanks for the info 😊 So as you may have seen now, I have caved in and bought an Akra!! Came up on ebay for £500 and as you know there about £1000 new so I couldn't resist! That really interesting what you've said about Pro Race, I did not know that they had worked with a BMW dealer to develop their products. Since I have the Akra now I don't really need their services at the moment but I will keep them in mind 😊
Oem Chrome canon is fine imho. Suits the bike and is designed to allow proper fuelling and perform well. Akra or remus both make more power. What you paid overall would have bought either! K&N and end pipe would give you what you need without any remap since the cat is the major gas flow restriction. Decat headers and end pipe would need a reflash or your bike will run too lean and that would prove costly as some owners have found out the hard way. Other exhausts to consider include gpr furore, blue flame and scorpion.
Hi Paul, well we will have to disagree over the chrome cannon - I'm definitely not a fan! I certainly thought I was saving myself a lot of money at the beginning of this sorry saga 😂 I'm happy with the set up for now... I don't think a decat will be for me as I don't believe I will be able to keep the bike quiet enough with a end can alone if the cat is removed (noise levels being a subjective thing obviously). If I keep the bike long term I'll consider more mods on the intake/exhaust side of things. Thanks for your thoughts!
@@RikkyTang I see the attraction of a louder can but I found with one of my bikes, it got on my nerves after many hundreds of miles into a tour, where the drone coincided with the cruising speed and just put me off wanting another loud pipe. Thx for explaining your adventures. I enjoyed Luckily I bought the Akra. I slightly hesitated about a Jekyll & Hide, but expect it to be too loud for me. (And I hate the idea of having to switch the exhaust all the time during a ride)

You're right Mal I am having fun doing this stuff and trying to personalise the bike... one step forward and two steps back! 😁😂 Yes buying a new silencer should be about both aesthetics and sound otherwise what's the point! I think changing modern exhausts is going to keep getting more difficult right up to the point where we are all riding electric bikes and it won't matter then! I might put a lolly stick in the wheel after that 🤣🤣
I had one of the last gs 1200s ,it wasn’t quite loud enough but I didn’t fancy spending a lot on a new end can. I saw a youtube vid where this guy took the oe end can off and drilled holes in the baffles from the exhaust pipe end………so I did the same ! The exhaust note was a bit louder and lower sounding and the bike didn’t seem to lose any performance. It did need a very long drill bit to reach the baffles but otherwise it was an easy job. Maybe try it on your 1250 ?
Thanks for your comment! After reading it I had started thinking about trying to drill the OEM silencers... if I messed it it's easy to find replacements on ebay for less than £100! Or just install a Bluetooth microphone near the exhaust and send the sound to a set of earbuds you are wearing. IDK. I want to change out my chrome cannon also, and seems based on your several videos I need to go with the Akrop. But mostly out of stock in US.
Ricky, I have a 23’ R1250R and don’t care for the rear chrome “tuba” exhaust either. Looking at the SC-1 Project exhaust. Size seems to be better as well as sound. Did you look into an SC Project exhaust for your bike?
I'm afraid that you are mistaken - catalytic converters contain precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium. This would cost a lot more than the price I paid if it had those metals in it! It's just a Db killer/baffle made out of steel, that's all.
