How NOT to Improve the EXHAUST on a BMW 1250GS and 1200GS

  • A lot of riders consider the exhaust sound of the BMW R1250GS and the R1200GS to be a little....boring. Apart from spending a lot of money on aftermarket motorcycle exhausts, is there another way?

Recently rode an R9T with a full AKRA system. Sounded OK to me.
Same day rode a bone stocck 2014 R1200GS, factory system is OK too.
I would get rid of the factory can just for the weight savings and nothing else. Loud systems get old quick on long runs at highway speeds.
I have a 2003 SV1000N with D&D "mufflers" BUT there's no such thing as muffling going on when ALL you can see is a straight pipe perforated core from start to end. Sounds awesome tho. 🤘🏻😈

"Dave's not here man ?" Another..and even better video using the 3 camera technique..(there's 3 GPs on my Scout).
BMW, along with Sena, may have Dunning-Kruger Syndrome in its customer comments dept..that would answer your rhetorical question of "why.."
A hack/trick is to cut a couple of slots in the pipe ends and tighten with a hose (spiral screw w/slotted band) clamp.
In the video, I believe I saw, (definitly saw after review) when your Cap Mount GP looked down the pipe (@ the 6:26 timestamp) after removing the boat anchor, the illuminated floor (?) I'll review later after I put pants on. Oh the conundrum of pants v. video views IS perplexing. The Sport Can sounded fantastic the second I heard it ! Good editing, and only your first try at it, as well. Stay well..we're all in this together.

I know I might be a little late to throw in my idea here but... as almost 2 years have past since you uploaded this video.
Instead of upgrading the muffler... Have you thought of removing the CAT and junction box under the bike and have a Y pipe made up? BUT remember to keep the existing 'Flapper" valve in your configuration.
Not sure what this will do on the Beemer but it makes the Ducati Multistrada sound awesome while keeping the original looks and at a very minimal cost.
    Have a great day.

Yoshimura cans have a deep throb, very much to my liking. But I have an Akra, because that came with the bike I bought. Contrary to the common belief, these after-market cans are not used to make the exhaust note louder, but deeper. More throaty, more “masculine”. Original cans sound like popcorn machines more than not

Tradionally if you change muffler for sound gain you will loose a little bottom end torque plus chew a bit more fuel. This cannot be avoided as you are changing air flow balance & definately the standard computer will not compensate.
But overall a little more sound may be worth it.

  • @MrAndrew1953
    @MrAndrew1953 4 года назад

I would swap the Go Pro for a Fez(little round brim less hat). I think that would look a lot better. I just don't think that exhaust muffler has a very long term future, loses too much back pressure, performance. Hang the expense and get a decent muffler for A BMW. I put a Yoshimura copy on a GS1000 once. Not a good idea in the long run.

Aside from the added noise, the one downside I can see is that your shorter “sporty” exhaust will be impinging on the inside of your panniers and will possibly mark - or even scorch them. One thing - 52 cm is about 21 inches or about the length of your forearm. I think you meant 52 mm. Good grief - are you an American?
By the way - why doesn’t Dave help with the cameras? He seems like a rather lazy bugger in many respects.

30 some bikes ago, I thought every motorcycle needed a loud pipe. Hell, I even put a Vance and Hines slip-on on my Audi 5000 in college 😂. My experience with attention getting exhausts have led me toward more quiet bikes. Especially the 1250GS when my wife is on the back... and wheelies on the CRF450L are nearly silent as far as the neighbors are concerned. The S1000RR is my loud bike and Ive got an Akropovic on that bike. Boy was it salty$$$ too 😖. Have you looked at any of the pipes on ebay? Ive seen some fairly priced offerings like one from Delkevic for $300 USD.
