  • What I really think about this bike. Now that I have 100,000 miles on my BMW R1200GS, I figured it was time for a long term review of this motorcycle. I definitely feel like I have had a good amount of time to get to know this bike, all the quirks, and the features and characteristics I love and even a little insight into the maintenance involved in putting this many miles on a motorcycle.
I am hoping to put many more miles on this bike before retiring it, many many more! Here's to another hundred thousand!

Hi Tim, I was contemplating selling my 2015 R1200GS this morning. I have had it from new but have only managed to do 51 thousand miles on it. Due to the virus I have been hit very hard financially so bike maintenance has been sketchy to say the least, but still the GS chugs on. Even though I clean my bike regularly the engine paint was lifting within 2 years and it has carried on doing so.
So this morning I was feeling a bit down which is very unusual for me, when I came across your year old video and saw the light. I have loved this bike all these years and it just fits me somehow and with my financial situation improving why the hell would I want to sell her. I am booking her into the shop today for a major service, she deserves it. Thanks Tim for bringing me to my senses.

Tim - I have the '19 1250 GSA and that bike is a dream - the engine is incredibly smooth, clutch like butter, quick shifter much improved, etc., etc. You're dead on about the feeling you get when riding it. It's addicting and confidence inspiring. Go anywhere, do anything. It does it all very well. I think they improved the seat since the '15, cuz I don't feel the pain like you do. Also the Puig windscreen is the best after market one to get. Taller, but has the same styling as the OEM. Great review, thank you!

What gasket are you replacing when you check your valves ?? I'm a BMW tech and have been for many years. With main dealers too. There is no gasket that needs to be replaced. I have literally checked THOUSANDS of valves on these bikes and had the covers off even more often. If your dealer is selling you a new cover gasket with every valve check, then they are HAVING YOUR PANTS DOWN. These gaskets last twenty years easily. Even BMW don't tell you to change the gasket. I'd be asking for some money back and shaming the dealer.

If you cut the thumb off a heavy duty kitchen type rubber glove, about 30mm of it using a box cutter and straight edge. Then stretch it over the Keyless Ride switch it covers the whole switch body and fits like a glove (haha). It’s flexible and protects the switch from the sun and the elements. It’s cheaper than a new Keyless Ride switch👍🏻

"I'm starting to get used to it", referring to center stand interference while standing on the pegs.....AFTER 100,000 MILES! LOL!! I recently took my 2009 R1200R to the dealer for lack of power and surging in the engine and a failed ABS. They wanted $3,500 to fix it. Nope! I paid them $460 to give me that bad news, brought it back home and went online. I got the engine running as it should with a new camshaft position sensor and (literally) a few light taps on the ABS Module's motor to free up a sticky brush and it, too, is working fine. Not counting the $460 the dealer's service department got from me I spent just under $300 and that included an OBDLink and MotoScan app to handle my own diagnosis in the future. With service support like this, I will NOT be buying another BMW!

    • @nokoolaid
      @nokoolaid 4 года назад

Module Masters in Idaho I think does the ABS rebuild for 250 or something like that. There is the GS911 scan tool. The problem with Motoscan is that it's android only. I might try it with BlueStacks on my Mac to see if it works though. I do all my own maintenance and repairs on my 2009 RT. Bought it new in 2010. Fuel strip went twice, replaced under extended repair notice by BMW. There is a new recall on the fuel pumps that may apply to you.

Great review Tim. Sometimes things prevent total honesty, but the GS was one of the best bikes I’ve owned. Weight distribution, smooth throttle/ power distribution and just plain nimbleness of the bike are the main reasons. I did switch the stock seat with the tall seat right when I got it but experience the same lack of comfort. I have tried an air hawk but just could never get comfortable with it. (Like the sheep skin though) Tried a friends custom made Sargent for a ride, it felt good but was a short ride. Maybe one of your other followers has more experience on one. The rox anti-vibe risers were a great add, I put them on all my adv bikes. The only other thing I did, that I would swear by, is spend some big $ on upgrading the entire suspension. (Shocks and forks) that was the single best really noticeable improvement I’ve made. I’ll have to look into the clutch, thanks for the tip.
Be well and safe travels my friend! ~B

If you try an Air Hawk seat pad, just a small puff of air is all you need for comfort. It doesn't deflate on it's own either. Worked for me but the manufacturers put a bright red stripe down the middle of the seat. I have taken a black permanent marker to it and works like a charm (nothing on my bike is red and I don't want to draw attention away from the bike and onto a seat pad).

Try a Cool cover mesh cover (from UK) on your seat. I spent a week in August with one of these on my bike, and it made my ~430 mile daily mileage very manageable. Very breathable cover, but it doesn't detach you from what the bike is doing like an Air Hawk does.

I've got a 2007 Honda CBR 150 with over 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometers) on it in Thailand. Still runs well, though the carb needs to be re-built. I change oil at 4000 kilometers and use Motul or Shell synthetic. Here in Thailand, it's not uncommon to put this amount of mileage on small motorcycles. It's needed multiple chains, tires, batteries but those are maintenance items. The clutch is the original and the engine has never been opened.

Love the review man! One thing I'd like to point out is that you usually don't need to replace the valve cover gaskets every time the covers are pulled off. I know you mentioned that's a job you don't do yourself (which I totally get and appreciate). They're pretty beefy gaskets which is probably why they're expensive, but I know BMW mechanics that generally only replace them when necessary. Hopefully that's helpful in some way. Love your videos.

      I approve!
I work at the factory and in general you can say only parts that get permanently compressed/deformed or abraded (just like sealed & encapsulated screws) need to be changed.
The valve cover gasket is a rubber sealed copper kinda gasket and only needs to be changed when its damaged. And this goes for about everything on any bike ^^

Regarding the key-less FOB loosing connection with the bike. I had the same problem on a long trip, after changing the battery with a generic brand new one, from The Source, before leaving. When I got back home, I found and switched the the old battery back in. Even though it was almost empty it stayed connected perfectly up until the dealership replaced it during a maintenance check with a new one of the same. Basically you need to use the same model battery that came with the FOB (Panasonic I think) and you will be fine.

I feel the same overall about the bike. I had the same bike you have and made the up grade for the 1250 about a month ago. I love the new engine, feels a little more well balanced, torquy and in fact it is more powerful, but the 1200 was ok too. Now with the panniers and a passenger, it behaves easily than the 1200. And see that I use to enjoy a lot my 1200. The seat still is a pane. By your experienced opinion I am thinking about changing for a more comfortable one. Thanks for sharing, it is quite useful to count with long using experienced riders opinions. And thanks for the numbers. Costs are always a point to pay atention.👍🏻

Like the other comments, I agree, best review I've seen👍👍 glad it's not just me that thinks the seat is awful, it's so frustrating that it's so uncomfortable, I use a cheap Chinese air hawk copy that is as good as my genuine air hawk but was only 18 British pounds off ebay👍

I'm looking for a used one, but the cost of replacing clutch is frightening and many don't have a maintenance log, so it's a bit like playing Russian roulette. I wish I could afford a new one, but it's not an option at the moment.

Every bike has a separate shift timing profile and it takes me real time (not just hours) to internalize it so that I shift silently and jerklessly up and down without thinking so much about it. It’s like playing a song you’ve learned. A lot of the skill is now in your hands.

Absolutely on point. Great review. You touch on things that most people don't discuss in detail, including sales guys at dealerships. GS's are balanced, great at many things and terrains, reliable, expensive to fix if you break something (but we don't get into this game unless we can afford it lol.), but they don't break easily, and absolutely a joy to ride anywhere. I realize I'm just stating the obvious especially to any other GS rider, but for the newbies or folks thinking about a GS. As NIKE says" Just Do It"

Hey Tim nice review, I also ride a 1200GS but the previous version with no water cooling and dry clutch so interesting to hear your review. I have not wanted to spend $600+ on an after market sit so I use the arihawk cushion for long rides. It is cheap and a game changer as you can adjust the air and always make it feel different so pressure is never on the same spot. Also helps with the air flow. Take care

ABS is there when you're not always on your game., I 've got it, it's never been intrusive. Tire pressure monitoring ( when it stays working) is God's gift to mankind., I worked in a tire shop years ago, & the lack of proper inflation was like leaving a few bolts out on an aircraft wing. Checking valve clearance is easy & cheap, adjusting it ( the usually tight ones) requires a lot more work , & usually a bunch of different size shims you're unlikely to have with you. ,So I agree with you there ,although you may want to try checking them yourself to see if they need adjusting.I've seen ridiculous instructions dutifully followed by on line videos, when really all you have to do is have the cam lobe directly opposite from the surface it presses down on.My bike instructions involve removing the front wheel , peering through tiny access holes to look at timing marks just so you can adjust some valves simultaneously., Then taking out spark plugs (instead of just loosening), all absurd when you can just leave everything assembled & line up the cams by very slowly turning the engine to let the compression leak out the loosened spark plugs & then reuse the gasket (if it's undamaged)which is most of the time! ."KEY FOBS NOBODY WANTS" ., BUT COMPLAINTS GO UNHEARD TO THE DEALER BECAUSE THEY ALWAYS BREAK YEARS LATER !! & most cost a fortune to buy & program.

The next time you have to replace the clutch, leave the friction plates to soak in engine oil overnight to give them time to impregnate the oil. Doing this will prevent premature wear or even failure of the friction plates if you put them in dry. :)

When you take a road trip, ya gotta form a bond with your bike, especially when you travel by yourself. I have a 97 Softail that I take on some pretty long road trips. No music no gizmos, just me and the bike. I talk to (her also) and she has taken care of me in some pretty bad places. Now a friend of mine are planning a bucket list trip to NWT Canada and Alaska. I need a new HER for that trip and found a used 2011 R1200GS, still oil cooled and 16000 miles. Ive looked at several 2020 and 2021 Beemers, Africa Twins and Trumpet Tiger 900(really like the Tiger). But I saw the 2011 on the floor and she looked like she was in need of a home. She doesn't have all the gizmos and gadgets on the newer bikes which is what I like also. At 16000 miles, it sounds like that Boxer engine is just getting broken in, so Im pretty confident she will make a 15000 mile trip ok. Thanks for the review.

EVERYBODY - Here is the deal with BMW seats (and all OEM seats no doubt). A long time ago a BMW rep told me that BMW gave up on trying to make stock seats acceptable to all. Too much variation in what people want/need so they concentrate on appearance and basics... height for example. They let the aftermarket deal with individual requirements. I believe its true... best stock seats I've owned : Ducati ST4 and Buell Ulysses... worst: Yamaha FJR and BMW K100RS.... other folks have had no problem with them.

Great review! Only a bmw boxer will deliver this type of satisfaction. My new Japanese bike is in the shop due something I did wrong. Rather minor but waiting on a part. I just rented a ratty old '07 R1200rt that has 80k on it. However, routine maintenance has been performed reasonably often. I don't care, I'm not going to go without during peak riding season in the northwest. She's ugly yellow, police addition.....but she'll do.

Thanks for the Review of the Bike. I love the GS Bikes. I’m trading my Harley for one on 05-16-22 and can’t wait. I won’t be able to do the long Tours due a Bad Back. But at least I will enjoy the Ride. To me I think the way the Bike looks just can’t be beat by any other Bike. I really enjoy your Videos and they make me feel like on the Bike riding through the Mountains also. I plan on packing my Metal Detector just to check around and see what I can find out in the middle of no where. You just never know what you will find and it will give me something to do on Breaks from Riding. Anyway, Thsnks again for the Videos.👍

Thanks Tim! I live in Medellin Colombia and have been thinking about getting one. All the affluent Colombians have one and they have huge riding groups. I want to start blending in here after 5 yrs and finally realizing I want to make this my personal HQ. I have a few concerns 1) here we ride crazy around the city splitting lanes , going the wrong way on one way streets, even riding on side walks everything goes here). 2) I have a Yamaha Bolt i got bcz its loud and I want people to know Im there. I can snake through traffic with it no problem bcz handle bars give me an idea of where I can go safely. The boxer engine on this will I be able to use handle bars as guide to snake around? 3) I'm 5'10 and just hit my 60s I need to have my feet on the ground in the city. Does it lower enough for a person my size? You have sold me on the bike!!! :) I used to have old honda magna with direct drive w/o chain and loved it. Thanks!!! These questions are for any owners of this bike thanks in advance!!!

Hi Tim, I dont see any highway pegs, you mentioned the crash bars allowing you to change position, do you just rest your legs over the engine heads/crash bars? Im very interested in the 1250 GS but am concerned about not being able to stretch my legs. Im 6'3" and have always relied on highway pegs for touring. Love your channel btw, you're so laid back and real.

I just turned 100,000-miles on my 2012 GS Rallye and will recommend for you the Wunderlick front seat for comfort with the design offering long times in the saddle without iron butt. Surprised you have that many miles on tires because I need to change my Michelin tires on the rear at no more than 5,000-miles, and front can get 7,000-miles. I too changed my clutch, only one time though. I changed my pads twice and needed to change the front rotors as well because they were miked and indicated a need to change. Nothing else has caused a problem...The bike is a keeper...
