  • Living with the BMW R1250RS - In Depth Review: With it's brilliant R1250 "Shiftcam" engine, the new for 2019 BMW R1250RS is the bike that many say would suit most owners more than the GS. Having now lived with the machine for a couple of weeks I've had a good chance to take a look at the bike in all sorts of conditions and assess that thought. In this video I look at riding the bike in different situations, the likely costs of ownership and the lessons I've learned with the bike, both good and bad. This video is for you if you want to know what the bike is like to live with......

I am transported to a higher realm when I’m sailing or riding my motorcycle. I’m 75. The older boy across the street had a motorcycle. I hero-worshipped him. I couldn’t wait to grow up to ride motorcycles! I hope I can ride them until I no longer want to and I cannot imagine that.

    I used to own the 1200RS and have recently taken the 1250 for a test ride. There are a few things it still needs...Rear hugger .. change the position of the satnav as it's going to get blocked if you have a tank bag fitted. And bar risers, on long distances I used to get shoulder ache. Apart from those things it's an excellent bike.

    I would keep this bike in my bedroom, to wake every morning and savor its quality. If only the wife shared my appreciation of the engineering excellence. So when I move to a house with a 5-car garage, this machine will be my special weekend tourer, alongside my everyday GS and probably a 600cc Superscoot for shopping. Sadly, these dreams are as likely to come true as I will win the Lotto this weekend. But if I did, I would just have to have this magnificent dream machine. At least I got an armchair ride today, thanks Andy.

    Mr. Flyer-A fine review of this beautifully blue painted bike! I compare it to my '81 R100RS and find some changes: mine has no electronic devices of any kind (no TV screen, ABS, electrical suspension, fuel injection) and fewer horses. But it does have the best fairing ever, much more lightness, an oil dipstick, a complete toolkit, and two (2) exhaust pipes as is proper for twin cylinder machines. In 38 years BMW has improved some things but left other good features behind, and it would be fun to see you review one of the older airhead BMW motorcycles.

    • @tibork3845
      @tibork3845 2 года назад

      Ha! Those '81s have the cool Mad Max fairings. Lovely. I have a '94 and I also just don't like the look of the new RS, it's just too sporty. A sports touring bike should look more of a touring bike rather than a large crutch rocket and I heard that same comment in other reviews as well. I am also holding onto mine and hoping they'll have a better look for the next gen, or just might end up getting an RT - even though I don't want a full touring bike.
      Thanks for the in-depth review Mr. Flyer!

    For interest, I'm 5'10'' and rode the previous model RS. Great bike but had switch to GS due to the cramped leg tuck, overweight on hands due to slight pitch forward and buffeting on helmet due to insufficient wind protection. Just too old to be "tucked up " on longer rides these days. Spot on review Sir!

    I really enjoyed testing this bike when looking to trade our '16 plate FJR. The only issue was for us as we tour a lot is the lack of space both the luggage and its physical size for two up riding. It was for us the only BMW choice as it's relatively light and not a GS. We ended up with a GS1250 Exclusive as it had the size which for a tall person like me needs for riding distance.

    I had a 1250RS for half a day and whilst it's not sports bike cramped I did rediscover some old aches and pains after a few hours. Also found the pillion to be more 'perched' than my outgoing R1200GS. On the whole though a nice bike which handles well and stays where you put it on the road. After much deliberation I still prefer the GS so traded the 1200 for an R1250GS Rallye TE. Nice video though. Keep up the good work.

    I think you could up your reviews in terms of cost of ownership and add to your monthly calculation depreciation cost when you buy new. It would include the information about the price itself and regarding how much the bikes of different producers loose value over time. It is easy to find depreciation curve for specific bikes in the net and it would add a lot of value to the viewers because they could see the real cost that has to be incurred in order to own and ride such a bike. Thanks for your work by the way, you are very good in how detailed those reviews are :) All the best!

    A good review. I have just completed my first 1k miles on my R1250RS and I agree with all of your points. I had the R1200RS prior to this and the latest model is a huge step up in my opinion. One negative for me is the price of the 'running-in' service. As one has just made a sizeable investment a few weeks before, it seems a bit of a cheek to charge so much so soon. The R1250RS is a brilliant bike and, bearing in mind I am 6'3", I find it very comfortable but get a bit of 'bum ache' after a couple of hours. However, this is easily relieved by a quick stop and walk about. The engine and gearbox are brilliant..

    You can buy an enhanced rear mudguard at any BMW UK/AUS dealer.
    Quick and easy bolt-on OEM replacement for the piece that sits behind the number plate arm.
    Not so pretty, but as it's much wider it keeps all the mud of the back of your pillion and your top-box.
    Forget the huggers, they do very little.

    Surprised you didn't get much turbulent air off the screen as it doesn't look much different from the previous R1200RS. I ended up fitting a MRA Vario screen, that made a big difference. A rear (Puig) hugger also helps with rear crud fling. Should be standard on a sports tourer tbh. I always worried about BMW painted front engine case being directly in the firing line from stones and debris so fitted the excellent MachineArt Avant Guard (looks factory). The Akra sounds great. Just some ownership tips if you get one in you future.

      After having the R1200rs which I too installed a MRA Vario screen. I now have the R1250rs I have on order a new MRA screen, because I to found too much buffeting and helmet noise with the factory screen.

    I’ve had my 2016 1200-RS for the last 2 years & covered 14,500 miles, it’s never missed a beat - great all-rounder!!
    It is quite cramped though, easily fixed by getting the higher sports seat. Then you’ll need the bar risers to take the extra weight off your wrists...
    Also that standard fitted screen is totally useless on long trips/tours, I have two aftermarket screens to chose from of different heights, a tinted (more sporty looking) Puig - & a clear high/wide Givi screen.
    I have fitted a LeoVince exhaust to mine, but find it just too noisy for touring on, thankfully it’s a very easy/quick swap back to the standard exhaust, & visa versa!
    I’m toying with changing it (eventually) for the 1250rs, then swapping all my extras on to that... I won’t take mine to any BMW main dealer for servicing, with those stupidly high prices!
    I’ve found myself a “back street” BMW specialist who only charges £40 per hour (as opposed to £90 per hour) labour, much better mechanic too imo. 👍🏻

      How'd you find the windscreen being a little taller than TMF?
      And also the range and handling (aka Twisties)?
      I've been really interested in one of these, as I'd quite like a sports tourer, however for the premium, I'm not sure how much better it is than a Tracer 900GT?

      Sintjin Ansley - The build quality and fit and finish and overall feel of the BMW is far beyond that of Yamaha. Go ride the BMW and you will see what I mean.

    • @JLOSTAFF1
      @JLOSTAFF1 4 года назад +1

      @@sintjinansley6107 Although I'm taller than TMF I prefer the screen in the lower position. It's much quieter than in the higher position but of course you get more wind blast which actually I like - in the summer it keeps you cool and in the winter you get enough draft to stop your visor steaming up. This won't suit everybody which in some ways is why other people doing road tests can't really help you. Range is 230 miles approx. Great on bends, the suspension is Rolls Royce quality. Better quality overall in my opinion than Japenese bikes. My other bike is a Honda CB1000R 2008-17 model so I'm not biased towards BMW totally.

    Andy love the channel, especially your honest reviews. I am getting back into riding after a ten year break, mainly due to an accident, which in your opinion would be the better bike for commuting and the odd long distance tour, the BMW R1250Rs orR1250RT? Solo tours as no longer have baggage on Pillion, no disrespect to Mrs Flyer or other couples. Keep up good work, i miss your fashion reviews at the end of the test rides.

    Hi TMF, good review and if I had the money I think I would have to add the R1250RS, R1000S, S1000XR all to my garage, they always have me in conflict. I have the R1200GS, and a Triumph Street Triple 765RS (the wife’s machine 😉) nearly bought a S1000R, but decided it would be better to wait till after we close on our house, don’t want to upset the Mortgage company... LOL It would be nice to get one of each at least for a weekend test ride to decide which would make a nice addition to the 2 wheeled fleet.. Ha Ha ha, think I will have the BMW and Triumph Logo’s painted on the garage floor in the new house, (how is the garage expansion coming along?)

    Nice review and I would love to own one. I test rode the previous 1200 model and was also impressed, but likely would add handlebar risers for touring comfort. Also, not sure how this machine would be two-up? Agree that the chrome silencer looks bad.

      Very nice theoretically. In practice it doesn't work at all. The tyrepumps at gas stations are almost allways worn out and won't push the valve in enough to fill the tyre. I've owned an 1915 R1200R and now own a 2017 R1200R and have to fill the tyres at work, where a have a better nozzle.

    Thanks TMF for a nice review. I'm looking to buy a 21-22 R 1250 RS Exclusive used and found your review quite useful. The quiet exhaust issue your raise is a plus for me. Some residual concerns not addressed are the rear mudguard, which appears to promotes a tail tidy but hardly practical. Also, not sure how much proetecion is offered to the rest of the components. Likewise, the front mudguard may be too short in arc to provide full engine protection in this type of design. None of these issues were discussed in your review, but important for daily and touring riders alike. You also don't discuss slow full lock cornering such as low radius u-turns under engine power with feet on the pegs. A 240+kg bike can be a challenge under these circumstances.

    I was about to buy one of these then looked in to the new Honda Gold Wing DCT at the NEC today. Not the lardy "Touring" version but the basic model. Trouble is it's almost £8k more. Gulp. Agreed about the chrome exhaust, it really is horrible but you can spec it with the brilliant Acropovic and its transforms the characher of the bike. Don't bother with the standard or chrome ones. Great review as always.

    Great video TMF! Question for you, RS vs Superduke GT. I’m in a 2013 GS and looking more for sports touring. What’s your thoughts on those two? Both bikes look awesome and have their pro’s and con’s. I love the sound of the twin and lean towards the KTM for range as well. Can’t believe the RS only holds 18lts!?!? Hopefully due to ride both in the coming weeks if we’re allowed out. Your thoughts?
